Ready for a journey into the incredible? We're diving into the world of jaw-dropping world records - think heaviest vehicle ever pulled over 100 feet and humongous hamburgers. But there's more: we'll also introduce you to Larry Ramos-Gomez and Gabriel Danny Gomez, two extraordinary brothers from Mexico battling congenial generalized hypertrichosis, a rare medical condition. And since no journey is complete without wisdom, we're not just stopping at world records - we're also weaving in a deep dive into the Bible. In this exploration, we put the spotlight on the resilient Hannah from 1 Samuel 2, embracing her life lessons to fortify our own faith. We're reminded to acknowledge the Lord as the source of our strength, an idea powerfully symbolized by a horn in the Bible. And, oh, we're also navigating the tricky terrain of challenging biblical tales. We delve into the unsavory actions of Eli's sons, cautioning against the perils of greed and violence. Yet, even from such stories, we draw out the silver lining - God's unique knack to transform our mistakes into pathways of glory. But that's not all. We also dare to ask a question that most shy away from - Are we unknowingly putting our children before God? As parents, it's easy for our love for our children to eclipse our devotion to God. But here's the reassuring bit - even when we falter, God has a way of using our missteps for his glory. So join us in this episode and let's unravel these fascinating stories and lessons, one record, one biblical tale at a time. What wisdom can we receive from developing deep connections with an octopus and other life forms in the marine world? What if the subtle science and mysteries of nature could be discovered in our own backyard? And what life lessons could we draw from tracking wild animals?Listen to Craig Foster's deeply intimate friendship with an octopus in the wild, and how it can connect the human heart with the natural world, in an exclusive conversation with Prof. Hitendra Wadhwa, on Intersections Podcast. Underwater explorer Craig Foster dives nearly every day in the near-shore waters of South Africa and it's here that he befriended an octopus, a relationship captured in the documentary “My Octopus Teacher.” He's coauthor of the 2021 book “Underwater Wild” and joined us for a memorable Living on Earth Book Club event to talk about his encounters with cuttlefish, sharks, and Cape clawless otters, and the power of connecting with wild nature. Also, as the autism rate continues to rise among children, scientists and clinicians are connecting the dots between autism, genetics, folic acid deficiency, and chemicals like the endocrine disrupting plastic additives called phthalates. And bald eagles were nearly driven to extinction in the 20th century but are now making a big comeback. These majestic creatures are becoming so common that people are spotting them in the most unexpected places, even the heart of Manhattan. -- Support for Living on Earth comes from the I Am Bio podcast, with powerful stories of biotech breakthroughs, the people they help, and the global problems they solve. Joining me for this episode is paranormal researcher and investigator Morgan Knudsen. Morgan is the founder of the award-winning Entity Seeker Paranormal Research and teachings, which developed a number of educational programs to help people better understand and appreciate supernatural phenomena, the best known being Teaching the Living, which was also developed into a book based on the program. Morgan's latest book is The Gift of Instinct: Paranormal Lessons for an Extraordinary World, in which she shares some practical ideas on how the paranormal can teach people about who we really are and the instinct that calls us to a greater connection with what we call spirit. In the interview I begin by talking about how her interest in the paranormal started off, and developed into a career researching and investigating this field. We talked about some of the places she has investigated in Canada, and the legacy of the arrival of Europeans settlers in the country, which had a drastic effect on the indigenous cultures who lived there, both literally and spiritually, which led us to talk about the Wendigo phenomena. Later on our conversation leads to us talking about the mysterious Van Meter Visitor, a bizarre cryptid reported to terrorise an town in Iowa in the early 20th Century. LISTENER DISCRETION ADVISED: Our conversation does include the details of a gruesome murder associated with the Wendigo, which you may wish to avoid if you are not a fan of that sort of subject matter. And in their last trip beyond the headlines of the year, Peter Dykstra and Steve Curwood remember environmentally influential people who passed away during 2021. They also talk about an opportunity for Maysfield, Kentucky when the town rebuilds following horrific tornado damage. And the two wonder why the Biden Administration does not make more of the fact that their plans for electric vehicle investments are designed in part to protect consumers from volatile gas prices. Season 1. Episode 41. The word “futsu” in Japanese means regular or ordinary. In the sake industry, Futsushu is the word we use to refer to NON-premium sake. That is regular, ordinary or what some might call “table” sake. However, Futsushu is not one size fits all. What makes ordinary sake ordinary? Often it comes down to the rules and regulations for how premium sake is defined in Japan. With the exception of distilled alcohol, no additives are allowed in premium sake. Rules for so-called regular sake are not as strict – we are talking about the additions of acids, sugar or flavorings – none of these make the cut for premium sake. There are however some sakes that qualify for premium grades that are sold as table sake. So, once size does not fit all when it comes to the extraordinary world of regular sake!

This episode, I talk to one of the hardest working and most delightful storytellers around, Sheila Arnold. Based out of Hampton, VA, Ms. Sheila, as she is fondly known, has been performing full-time since 2003. She is an incredible storyteller, but that is just one of the many, many hats she wears. She is also an inspirational and motivational speaker, historical consultant bringing characters of historical importance to life, Consultant of Truth and Reconciliation for the Storytelling Association of California, and co-founder of Artists Standing Strong Together, now a 501c whose mission is: Connecting Artists to Resources. We talked about her work as a woman of color in the Black Lives Matter movement and how she has deepened her friendship with her two best friends, who just happen to be white. Ms Sheila is not only humble, but deeply generous with her time and knowledge, with great dollops of bravery thrown in too. She told a funny story about flashing an intimate body part on Zoom and ended with a lovely and moving story about her son.
Part 1 of 2. The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors: The Extraordinary World War II Story of the U.S. Navy's Finest Hour by James D. Hornfischer “This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can.”With these words, Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Copeland addressed the crew of the destroyer escort USS Samuel B. Roberts on the morning of October 25, 1944, off the Philippine Island of Samar. On the horizon loomed the mightiest ships of the Japanese navy, a massive fleet that represented the last hope of a staggering empire. All that stood between it and Douglas MacArthur’ s vulnerable invasion force were the Roberts and the other small ships of a tiny American flotilla poised to charge into history. In the tradition of the #1 New York Times bestseller Flags of Our Fathers, James D. Hornfischer paints an unprecedented portrait of the Battle of Samar, a naval engagement unlike any other in U.S. history—and captures with unforgettable intensity the men, the strategies, and the sacrifices that turned certain defeat into a legendary victory.Praise for The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors“One of the finest WWII naval action narratives in recent years, this book follows in the footsteps of Flags of Our Fathers. . . . Exalting American sailors and pilots as they richly deserve. . . . Reads like a very good action novel.”—Publishers Weekly“Reads as fresh as tomorrow's headlines. . . . Hornfischer's captivating narrative uses previously classified documents to reconstruct the epic battle and eyewitness accounts to bring the officers and sailors to life.”—Texas Monthly“Hornfischer is a powerful stylist whose explanations are clear as well as memorable. . . . A dire survival-at-sea saga.”—Denver Post“In The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, James Hornfischer drops you right into the middle of this raging battle, with 5-inch guns blazing, torpedoes detonating and Navy fliers dive-bombing. . . . The overall story of the battle is one of American guts, glory and heroic sacrifice.”—Omaha World Herald

After 2011's Winnie the Pooh, traditionally animated films in the United States virtually stopped being made, at least on a theatrical level. But just because the US gave up on them, doesn't mean the rest of the world did. And I don't just mean Japan! A French, Belgian, Canadian co-production, April and the Extraordinary World is a fascinating film - but is it a good one? And more than that, how does it hold up five years later? Today’s guest is the next in our Music and Mental Health series! He first crashed onto the scene when he founded the British punk rock band Doctors of Madness in 1975, known for being the forerunners of the punk movement. Back then known as ‘Kid’ Strange they toured the world, being supported by bands including The Sex Pistols, The Jam and Joy Division to name just a few and later touring Japan and appearing at festivals such as Glastonbury and Bestival. Not one to be tied down to just one creative outlet, he has also appeared in numerous movies including Tim Burton’s 1989 film Batman, Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York and most recently the last episode of Harry Potter. As a multi-hyphenate creative he has also gone onto contribute to publications such at GQ, The Sunday Telegraph, Tatler and The Independent as well as curating many ambitious and successful events and shows including the immersive multi disciplinary operatic collaboration with composer Gavin Bryars called “Language is a virus from outer space” based on the life and work of American writer William S Burroughs. It is no wonder that he has also become increasingly involved with education along his journey and he now devotes a lot of his time to working with young music students in the UK., Hong Kong, Sweden and the USA. In 2012 he was awarded a prestigious Fellowship of The Higher Eduction Academy Award of which there are only 350 in the country. And I can assure you, that is only the very tip of a huge career that spans decades, the list of talents and creative projects is endless, from writing programmes for Radio 4 and running his live chat show A Mighty Big, to curating theatre shows and exhibitions featuring artists such as Kate Tempest, Gavin Turk and Richard Wilson. You thought we were stupid, but we watched a French cartoon so now you know we're smart and gonna live forever! One of us watched April and the Extraordinary World, one of us watched Avril et le Monde truqué, and one of us watched both! So our talking about it is gonna be out of this monde! All this plus Simpsons references and Dylan spent the whole episode in a comedy club bathroom I guess.

Comic book legend Jacques Tardi's graphic novel provides the inspiration for this loose big screen adaptation from France, from screenwriters Franck Ekinci (who-codirects with Christian Desmares) and Benjamin Legrand, with graphic design work on the film by Tardi himself. It's a steampunk alternate world where Earth's has progressed little scientifically since the Industrial Revolution, primarily because scientists have been outlawed, and they've begun disappearing en masse. Most of the film is set in that alternate Paris in 1941, under the rule of Napoleon V, where much of the power supplied to the world comes from pre-fossil fuels like coal, charcoal and wood from the rapidly dwindling forests of the world. April is an inventive orphaned woman with a smart-alecky talking cat named Darwin. She lost her scientist parents at a young age when it was discovered that they had possibly invented something called the Ultimate Serum, a chemical cocktail that makes its imbiber rejuvenated, cured of disease, and virtually immortal -- something that could tip the global war for resources in France's favor should they be able to create their own invincible super-soldiers. April is being closely monitored from several interested parties in case she happens to stumble on the potent concoction, or invent it on her own, with the tenacious French policeman, Gaspard Pizoni, on orders to observe her every move. April makes that discovery, but finds an even larger one emerges that threatens to shift the balance of world power in an entirely unexpected direction.
