In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela return with a chaotic blend of conspiracy, nostalgia, and dark comedy. They open by digging into Nazi fugitives hiding in Argentina, the mystery of the Ark of the Covenant, and bizarre CIA psychic experiments. Indiana Jones gets fact-checked, ancient relics are questioned, and things spiral from there. Pop culture takes hits with jabs at Jamie Lee Curtis, Ozempic knockoffs like Lean, and "The Passion of the Christ" getting compared to "Shrek 2." That kicks off a full-blown Mel Gibson breakdown, covering everything from "Payback" to "Blood Father," "What Women Want," and "Conspiracy Theory." Then it's Nicolas Cage's turn: "Pig," "Face/Off," "Con Air," and his legendary spending habits. A deep dive into "Mask" leads to savage takes on Eric Stoltz's prosthetics, Rocky Dennis, and Laura Dern's skull. The crew debates "Lethal Weapon" rankings, mourns spoof comedies, praises Bruce Dern's Tarantino roles in "The Hateful Eight" and "Django Unchained," and shouts out forgotten gems like "The 'Burbs" and "Nebraska." It wraps with Meghan Markle's billion-dollar podcast, Elton John's AA opener, and the glory of "Walk Hard" and "Popstar." This episode of "Normal World" features comedian Kris Fried. Part of the fascinating refusal to roll over and die from Mr Mel Gibson. This entirely generic bad gangster hunts the lead/his family action drama falls slightly short of the excellent Get the Gringo but is still worth it.
It’s time for what’s become our weekly break in quarantine, where we get together and try to remember how to have a conversation while squabbling over an action movie. If you’ve been following along, April is all about re-assessing the 2010s period of Mel Gibson’s career—the period where he wasn’t well liked—which we’ve dubbed ‘The Resurrection of Mel Gibson.’ This week we’re happy to be talking about BLOOD FATHER (2016), which is a movie where Mel grows out his grey hair, sticks on a bunch of temporary tattoos, and growls a lot while killing drug cartel punks and scowling disapprovingly at his estranged daughter (there’s always an estranged daughter).
It’s another episode of What’s New to Netflix Instant!? and just because we’re still under lockdown that doesn’t stop us from covering all of the recent titles that are streaming on Netflix in April 2020. Afterwards we find out if Spenser Confidential lives up to the hype or if its just another generic Mark Wahlberg action flick when we talk about (you guessed it) Spenser Confidential from 2020. Next, Mel Gibson tries to protect his daughter from a blood-thirsty drug cartel in Blood Father from 2016. And finally, Brad Pitt goes after the thugs that stole a bunch of money during a poker game, which doesn’t end well for Ray Liotta, in Killing Them Softly from 2012. All of this plus killer klowns, mullets, minions, cannabis cooking shows, anime with bad animation, overhyped best picture winners, and absolutely no Tiger Kings. got a suggestion for the show?: whatsnewtonetflixinstant@gmail.com

This week Andrew and Stephen are joined by YouTube soft drinks reviewer and Mystery Men enthusiast Saul Delmore Philbin Bowman to discuss a living legend in the character actor world: William H. Macy. Known best for his work in the 1990s as Jerry Lundegaard in Fargo, Little Bill in Boogie Nights and Quiz Kid Donnie Smith in Magnolia, Macy has been working since the early 70s in theatre, film and TV. Discussed in this episode are his roles in the pre-Marvel superhero team-up Mystery Men, the Las Vegas crime-drama The Cooler and his barely there appearances in Air Force One and as the best buddy to Mel Gibson in Blood Father. Throughout his career Macy has put his sad sack persona to great effect wringing both tears and laughter from audiences and moustache aficionados alike. With at least one actor worse than those in Independence Day: Resurgence, Blood Father makes a return to the simple yet badass action flick. The reviewers at NBRR&M dive deep into the father of bloods, and break down this flick piece by piece! Also, a brand new "Gem-Of-The-For-Now."

I'm not sure if the spoiler discussion and ending of this podcast got destroyed because Dylan didn't watch the movie, or because of some haunting, but either way, there is no proper spoiler discussion which is a huge bummer. But, Christopher Cross and Dylan Schwan did manage to record most of our discussion on Blair Witch, the new film from Adam Wingard. Dylan didn't see the movie so he mostly moderates discussion on the film and asks some hard-hitting questions about some of the decisions made in the film. There's plenty to discuss but as for spoilers, we've unfortunately lost those. However, we also got to talk about Baz Luhrmann's The Get Down which Dylan saw in its entirety thanks to Chris making him. Then Chris saw a documentary called Killswitch, which focuses on internet censorship. He also watched the new Mel Gibson movie, Blood Father, which has him playing a recovering alcoholic that is filled with so much anger. Dylan gives the news and Chris provides the blu-ray rundown (which Dylan has written here), meaning we've got some stuff to talk about. Next week though, we will both watch The Magnificent Seven and get back to you all on how great Ethan Hawke is in it.
Brian and Colin discuss the viral marketing of The Blair Witch Project and it's legacy on today's marketing. Both fellas have a "Media Hot Take" this week and the duo ends with a review of the Mel Gibson vehicle Blood Father. LaF returns with a double review on episode 175. Richard Lusk and Ryan are reviewing the box office hit Don't Breathe and Mel Gibson's return to the silver screen in Blood Father. The fellas discuss both films, try to figure out whether a crazy Mel Gibson beats a blind Stephen Lang, and let you know which film you need to see. Have you seen Don't Breathe or Blood Father. Send in your review by emailing the show at theLaFpodcast@gmail.com, tweeting @theLaFpodcast, or message to Facebook.com/theLaFpodcast. The best comments will get read on a future show.
Tyler and David discuss what they've been watching, including Abortion: Stories Women Tell, Southside with You, Ben-Hur, Kicks, Dawn of the Dead, Kubo and the Two Strings, The Light Between Oceans, The Witch, Come What May, Elevator to the Gallows, Complete Unknown, Neruda, The Boy Who Cried Werewolf, Blood Father, Don't Breathe, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Werewolf of London, The Tenth Man, The Nutty Professor, Sausage Party, The Ladies Man, Fire at Sea, Florence Foster Jenkins, A Taste of Honey, It's Such a Beautiful Day, Hell or High Water, The Night Of and South Park.
Blood Father casts a weathered Mel Gibson as a former alcoholic tattoo artist ex-con divorcee named John Link, who's spent the last few years mostly off the grid in a trailer park in California's Coachella Valley (shot in New Mexico). He has been anxiously searching for his 17-year-old daughter, Lydia, who ran away at 14. She re-enters his life soon enough, desperately looking for money to make her getaway when she ends up shooting her ne'er-do-well boyfriend, Jonah, during an armed heist, causing others in his criminal organization tied to the drug cartels from Mexico to come after her. Fatherly instincts, and a resurgence of dormant survival skills picked up from his days as a not-so-nice-guy, kick in when the bad guys come around.

Lastly, Fig and Lock express their disappointment in No Man's Sky (55:00).

Robert DeNiro is back in the boxing ring but this time as a trainer in "Hands of Stone." So Neil Rosen, Bill MCCuddy, Bill Bregoli and guest Jack Rico put on their gloves to see how this Roberto Duran biopic measures up. Then it's off the the chariot races with the new "Ben Hur." And if that's not enough we look at "Blood Father" starring Mel Gibson as well as the ensemble film "The Intervention" and the indie "Sea of Trees." As always, we don't pull any punches.
This week Adam and Matt are back to talk two VASTLY different movie- the Disney remake of Pete's Dragon and on the opposite side of the scale we talk the movie that LOOKS like it's for kids but is totally not- Sausage Party. We also talk Florence Foster Jenkins and Blood Father.
Hey, it's Will and Tim! They are from Mattoon, Illinois, but only originally. Holy cow there were a LOT of noteworthy releases this past weekend: Six, in fact. There are only two, actually, that both Grierson and Leitch have seen, so they discuss "Pete's Dragon" and "Sausage Party." Grierson goes solo on Meryl Streep's "Florence Foster Jenkins," Jeff Bridges' "Hell or High Water" and Mel Gibson's "Blood Father," and Leitch does the same on baseball movie "Spaceman" but insists on pronouncing it like they do on "30 Rock." Then, in the Reboot section, they discuss a little-known indie from an unheralded upstart filmmaker when they dig into Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window." That's a lot of movies to cram into one podcast, and they fly through them. We hope there's still enough meat on the bones to make it worth your while. Movie Timestamps: 4:13 "Pete's Dragon" 17:23 "Sausage Party" 27:55 "Florence Foster Jenkins" 34:40 "Hell or High Water" 39:44 "Blood Father" 48:06 "Spaceman" 55:20 "Rear Window" Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Also, Grierson once killed a drifter. This probably isn't the best place to talk about this, but it feels good now that we've said it out loud. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
