Do you ever look back at the movies of your childhood and see similarities with how you saw relationships? Movies have always being an expression of society's beliefs and influenced the creation of the future. It's clear more than ever how our misconceptions today have roots in the TV and FILM of the past as research shows. We welcome actor and comedian Malcolm Barrett to discuss the film SPLASH and how it's tropes mirror a lot of the relational issues we see today. IT is is anything INCENDIARY ! Malcolm Barrett, a native of New York City, studied at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He recently worked on several NY based television series including "Law & Order" and "The Sopranos", "As the World Turns" and "The Beat". His feature film credits include "King of the Jungle," "Swimfan," and most recently, "The Rhythm of the Saints," shown at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. Barrett received his Equity membership at the age of 16 when he appeared in the McCarter Theatre production of "The Stonemason." Kathrine Barnes Co-Stars in the New BET+ Series, 'Average Joe', which premiered last night following the BET Awards. The BET Awards aired on almost every single Paramount Global owned cable station, including Nickelodeon, which was quite confusing, but what wasn't confusing is that Barnes had such an impact on the BET executives that her character was extended to 7 or the 10 episodes during the first season. Barnes has been seen on such TV shows like, 'Queer As Folk', 'Candy' and the Sundance film, 'The Glorias', as well as, 'Moonshot: Faceless After Dark and Walden.' She has also appeared on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Christmas Special, 'Adult Swim Yule Log.' A mega Julie Andrews fan, Barnes was only slightly impressed that I knew of Andrews' film, 'SOB', which shed her Mary Poppins image in the early 1980s. However, she did talk about her architect sister and where she would throw a, "Don't you know who I am?" celebrity style tantrum once she is more readily recognized. Barnes is also a Co-founder & Producing Partner at Vernal & Sere Theatre, she recently partnered with the Luis Buñuel Film Institute to mount the world-premiere stage adaptation of Buñuel's 1962 surrealist masterpiece, The Exterminating Angel, in which she played Silvia, the Duchess of Avila. In the series 'Average Joe',Barnes co-stars with leading man, Deon Cole, Tammy Townsend, Cynthia McWilliams, Malcolm Barrett and many others. Kathrine plays the recurring role (7-8 episodes out of 10) of 'Arina' which is nicknamed, "The Chameleon," a former KGB assassin and enforcer for the Russian mob who is dragged out of retirement and back into the world of fighting for her life in Pasha Lychnikoff's world. 'Average Joe', which premiered on BET's new streaming service BET+ last night following the BET Awards. 'Average Joe' will stream once a week for the next 10 weeks on Sunday nights. Joe chats with actress, artist and author Rachel True about her time working alongside some of Hollywood's biggest actors, directors and writers and her path to being a published author. Part 2 of our special in-depth episode with amazing and prolific actor Julie Ann Emery continues with fun and insightful discussions on her work in PREACHER, FARGO, PREACHER, CATCH-22 and her lifelong fandom of all things STAR WARS. This part begins with Julie Ann talking about her complex character Joanna in I HATE KIDS, the feature film comedy co-written by our own Frank Dietz and project partner Todd Traina. This discussion extends with personal insights into how Julie Ann finds relatable aspects in all her character roles, possibly based in tragic life elements or the comedy of character juxtaposition. Julie Ann addresses the impact of character partnership in light of the final season of PREACHER, and how well she paired with her series co-star Malcolm Barrett. Julie Ann also tells the tale of how she took an unusual approach in casting for the Hulu series CATCH-22, and how her against-the-odds approach eventually inspired director/co-star George Clooney to cast her as Marion Scheisskopf. Our STAR WARS talk with Julie Ann continues as she and the Geeks discuss the closure of the Skywalker saga episode films and streaming STAR WARS series -- all before they happened. Then we dive into some deep cuts in the Extended Universe novels and define what a Star Wars story means to us as fellow franchise fans. As we Damn Dirty Geeks hope you'll enjoy the second part of this fun, entertaining talk with Julie Ann Emery, this will also be our final regular podcast episode. As creator Frank Dietz announces at the top of this show, the Damn Dirty Geeks are suspending our podcast adventures for the best of reasons, as each of the Geeks have become very busy and prolific in our own careers and projects -- often still including each other when available! So from all the Damn Dirty Geeks along with our many friends and podcast guests, we thank you -- our listening audience -- for your support and participation over the past four years of Geekdom. New DDG ventures may appear in the future, so we welcome you to continue following us on social media for announcements of new projects, appearances and events. For now, we'll say good night, Geeks... Good night, Geeks!

This month’s dead pilot is over ten years in the making. It’s called The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud and was written by Jeff Greenstein (Will & Grace, Parenthood, Desperate Housewives). The story centers around Penelope Cloud, a woman who who has been struggling for 15 years to deliver the follow-up to her celebrated first novel. In that time, she's become dependent on a cocktail of anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications to get through the day. The story begins when Penelope, desperate to unblock herself, decides to go off all her meds at once and rejoin her life, already in progress. Andrew sat down with Jeff to talk about the ups and downs of developing this project for over ten years. From shooting a pilot for CBS starring Marisa Tomei, to writing six episodes of it for Amazon that were ultimately passed on after a heated back and forth. Jeff also talks about his experience staffing on shows like Friends, Desperate Housewives, and Will & Grace, and his path into becoming a sought-after television director. It was a colorful and at times emotional conversation about a pilot that was really put through the ringer. Enjoy! The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud stars Michaela Watkins as Penelope Cloud, Jon Cryer as Dr. Birkin/Passenger/Student, Mary McCormack as Eva, Daniel David Stewart as Ivy, Malcolm Barrett as Claude, Nichole Bloom as Geogia/Counselor, Felicia Day as Kendall, Navid Neghaban as Dr. Hakim, Kelsy Sandoval as Adoración, and Andrew Reich with stage directions. As part of our "Best of LA" series, we sat down at Art's Deli in Studio City with actor Malcolm Barrett who is best known for playing the role of scientist and time traveler Rufus Carlin in Timeless on NBC. We talked about how huge a change it has been to Malcolm's life starring on a TV show on NBC, as well as his work on the highly acclaimed TV show Better Off Ted and his role in the film Dear White People. But the thing we talked about the most was his theater company and his love for producing and acting in new works on stage. It is not very often that you run into an young actor that is actually working on the craft of stage acting while starring on a hit show. Malcolm is incredibly humble and will no doubt be a huge star in the past, present, and future... it's time for THE NIGHT TIME SHOW
