In this show, we are tying into our September retrospective of David Ayer's crime movies with his found footage police procedural End of Watch. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us debate Ayer's use of the found footage aesthetic, how it plays fast and loose with its own rules and whether it adds or detracts from the experience. We also talk about this movie standing out from a crowd of police procedurals by virtue of its raw authenticity and the filmmaker's desire to tip his had to the uniformed servicemen and women guarding the thin blue line, how the organic chemistry between its leads bolsters the film's realism and how the idea of gangsters in minivans recording themselves might be one of the film's most contentious concepts. In this episode of the Tactical Living Podcast, hosted by Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton, we delve into the powerful concept of stress loops and the long-term impact unresolved stress can have on your body and mind. Research shows that one stressful event can trigger the production of stress hormones in your body for up to six hours afterward—and many of us experience far more than just one stressful event in a day. In today's society, we are taught to suppress our emotions and hold it all together, but doing so creates what we call ""emotional constipation."" In this episode, we discuss the dangers of not completing the stress cycle and offer practical ways to process your stress in a healthy way. Understanding the Stress Loop: When we experience stress, our body is wired to feel it to completion. But in today's world, where any emotion outside of ""neutral"" or ""happy"" is often deemed inappropriate, we bury our stress and move on without resolving it. We'll explain what a stress loop is and why it's essential to close it for your overall health. The Consequences of Unresolved Stress: From emotional to physical constipation, we'll explore how bottling up stress can lead to both mental and physical health issues. The longer the stress remains unresolved, the more it impacts your body, potentially leading to burnout, chronic fatigue, and even illness. How Stress Manifests in the Body (Amazon Affiliate): We'll discuss how unresolved stress can leave your body stuck in a constant state of fight or flight. When the stress loop isn't closed, your body continues to pump out stress hormones, leading to long-term anxiety, tension, and even digestive problems. Why Animals Close the Loop and Humans Don't: In the wild, animals instinctively shake after escaping a predator, which helps them complete the stress loop. Humans, however, often suppress these instincts due to societal pressures. We'll explore why this is harmful and how we can learn from nature's stress management techniques. Five Practical Ways to Close the Stress Loop: Movement: Physical movement is one of the most effective ways to process stress. Whether it's a workout, yoga, or simply shaking out your body, moving helps release pent-up tension. Deep Breathing: Controlled breathing techniques can help signal to your nervous system that it's safe to relax, allowing you to complete the stress response. Express Your Emotions: Don't be afraid to scream into a pillow, cry, or vent to someone you trust. Allowing yourself to feel the emotion fully is crucial to processing it. Mindfulness Practices: Meditation, visualization, or progressive muscle relaxation can help calm your nervous system and complete the stress loop. Creative Expression: Sometimes writing, drawing, or engaging in a hobby can help you express and release emotions that are stuck, allowing you to resolve stress in a healthy way. Join us as we explore how unresolved stress affects your body and mind, and provide you with actionable strategies to help you close your stress loops. Whether you're dealing with the daily demands of life as a first responder or simply trying to manage everyday stress, this episode is packed with valuable insights to help you find relief and balance. Stephen King is no stranger to murderous cars. From Christine and From a Buick 8 to the malevolent Goblin truck haunting the roads of Maximum Overdrive, the master of horror knows his way around gory gear shifts, sinister steering wheels, and dangerous drivers. In 2014, he released Mr. Mercedes, a crime novel pitting Bill Hodges, a retired detective, against Brady Hartsfield, a criminal mastermind disguised as the ice cream man. Both survive the novel's explosive conclusion, though Brady is left in a vegetative state. After a brief detour into the world of rare publications with the 2015 sequel Finders Keepers, King catches up with the disabled criminal and his newfound psychic powers. End of Watch sees Hodges once again match wits with his old nemesis aided by partners Holly and Jerome. Hosts Randall Colburn, Jenn Adams, Rachel Reeves, and Ashley Casseday hop back into the blood-soaked Mercedes to conclude their coverage of this confounding trilogy. They'll discuss King's swerve into supernatural territory while puzzling over the story's bizarre tech. Does this 2016 novel elevate the trilogy as a whole? How does King handle the story's suicide themes? Does Jerome have any flaws and what's up with all the Zs? The Losers reach the end of the road as they say goodbye to one of King's most autobiographical characters In case you missed it, they recently covered Mr. Mercedes and Finders Keepers within the last few months. Every day, men and women in law enforcement across this country leave their homes and families to answer the call of service to a greater mission. Tragically, this call to service can require a heavy sacrifice. This sacrifice is not only made up by the dangers that come with violent situations, but the cumulative stress from the burden of the badge. Caleb Cook and the End of Watch Foundation want to make sure that their sacrifice does not go unnoticed and that they have the support they need. Cook and the EOWF are gearing up for their annual memorial ruck event. During 2023, there were 138 Law Enforcement Officers all over the country who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Their lives. With the mission to honor those Officers, they will carry one pound of weight for every officer over a continuous 42-hour period representing the officer's final 10-42 call. Today, we meet Caleb, hear his story and learn more about their work to honor their fallen brothers and sisters and support their families through: Honor: They honor the fallen with meaningful actions in the event and messaging. Support: They support the families of the fallen, officers injured in the line of duty, and assist where they can when struggling with mental health. Educate: Spread awareness to the public about other unknown aspects of law enforcement that may be misunderstood. They also lean in on strong core values to build better officers, units, friends and family members. Learn more about EOWF at https://www.eowf.org.

We go rough and tumble this week on Movies Merica with a retro review of the gritty cop drama End Of Watch. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as LAPD cops, Brian and Mike, who patrol one of the worst, if not the worst, crime-ridden parts of L.A. This film shows the seedy world they have to protect and serve the citizens of, all while not getting killed by any number of criminal scum. Gyllenhaal's character, Brian, takes up filming his, and Mike's, exploits in this world with his personal camera so we get a unique take on the cop drama. Also with this distinctive perspective, it shows the brotherly bond between Brian and Mike as they bust each others chops when they're not busting perpetrators. Alongside the rough edges and brutal violence of their job, End Of Watch also presents Brian and Mike's personal lives and who they're trying to protect and stay alive for. End Of Watch doesn't hold back on the darkness of the job while at the same time infusing the movie with humor to help you make it through. Is this movie worth your time?
