Not only has the scandal over Trump officials discussing military plans in a group chat on an insecure commercial platform made the Trump administration look like fools to Americans paying attention, but overseas allies are drawing conclusions about the risk of sharing intelligence with America when its top officials are so careless with sensitive data. Alexander Ward, national security reporter for the Wall Street Journal, talks with Rachel Maddow about his reporting that it was actually an Israeli intelligence asset that was exposed by the sloppiness of the Trump officials' group chat.

The 2024 film ‘Salem's Lot' is an adaptation of Stephen King's novel about a writer who returns to his hometown to find it under attack by vampires:  Plot Ben Mears, a writer who spent part of his childhood in Jerusalem's Lot, Maine, returns to his hometown after 25 years to write a book about the Marsten House. He discovers that an ancient evil has come to town and is turning the residents into vampires. Ben vows to stop the plague of undead and save the town.  Characters The main vampire is Kurt Barlow, a bald-headed coffin-dweller played by Alexander Ward. Ben's assistant, Richard Straker, played by Pilou Asbæk, acquires the Marsten House, a Victorian-style murder mansion.  Tone Some say the film is filled with jump scares and deaths, with characters being bitten, shot, and hit by a car. Others say the film doesn't get under your skin enough and doesn't have time to develop the characters.  Release The film was announced in 2019, shot in 2021, and with additional photography in 2022.  https://mostlysuperheroes.com/season-5-blogcast/salems-lot-2024-film ©2024 Carrogan Ventures, LLC

Kamala Harris did not have an extensive foreign policy track record before becoming Vice President. And as Vice President, she did not assume much of a foreign policy portfolio during the Biden Administration. So what could we expect from a Kamala Harris foreign policy? How might it be the same as or different from Joe Biden's foreign policy? And if Harris becomes President, who might assume senior foreign policy roles, such as Secretary of State and National Security Advisor? Joining me to discuss these questions and more is Alexander Ward, a national security reporter who starts at the Wall Street Journal next week and author of The Internationalists: The Fight to Restore American Foreign Policy After Trump, a vital book that tells the story of the first two years of the Biden Administration's foreign policy. We kick off by discussing what role, if any, Harris played in the two major events that Alexander Ward details in his book: the American withdrawal from Afghanistan and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. We then discuss what sort of foreign policy vision can be deduced from Kamala Harris' time as Vice President and Senator from California.

How has foreign policy changed since the presidency of Donald Trump? For decades, the U.S. aimed to create a more interconnected and globalized international landscape that would lift all boats, creating a more democratic world and a safer United States. But all of that changed in 2016. Donald Trump's presidency shook the very foundations of what the U.S. traditionally tried to achieve abroad. Like all good lefties, I cut my teeth in progressive politics learning all about the horrors of America's massive military industrial complex. In one of my very first college classes ever at the local community college, a passionate instructor who spent his spare time organizing peace marches against the Iraq War made sure each of his students left his class well-versed in America's overinvestment in defense spending and underinvestment in well, everything else.20 years ago I had zero appreciation for the reasons why America had amassed such tremendous military might. Like everyone else, I found America's disproportioned military budget to be one of our country's greatest sins. It was only 18 years later, after I undertook my exhaustive study of world history that I came to fully understand the antecedents that led American presidents of both parties to leave something called isolationism behind and lead America into creating by far the world's most powerful military. Instead, administration by administration, America fully embraced the concept of internationalism by building and continually reinforcing a military apparatus larger than the next ten countries combined. One large enough to “police” the entire world. So, before before you dig into this incredible conversation with Politico national security reporter Alexander Ward about his new book The Internationalists: The Fight to Restore American Foreign Policy After Trump I want to be sure you have a solid working definition of both these concepts: Isolationism: a policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries.Interventionism: Interventionism is characterized by the use or threat of force or coercion to alter a political or cultural situation nominally outside the intervenor's moral or political jurisdiction. In short, in the early 20th century, isolationism became the dominant attitude among Americans who came to believe U.S. involvement in World War I was unnecessary, a product of messing in affairs isolationists believed had no impact on Americans and killed thousands of American men. The use of the word ‘believed' here is intentional because as appeasement (isolationism) failed to stop Hitler's aggressive plans to occupy and rule Europe it became obvious how war and turmoil abroad impacts Americans. Then the surprise attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor put a finer point on it: America ignores the rest of the world at its own peril. The rest, as they say, is history. Ulusal Güvenlik Bakanı Itamar Ben Gvir İsrail'in en aşırı ilhakçılarından biri.

What were the main arguments in the leaded Dobbs decision, and where did these ideas come from? What function has the Federalist Society served in the conservative takeover of the Supreme Court? Also discussed in this episode: the relationship between radical, violent anti-abortion groups and the broader anti-abortion legal movement, the narrower victories the right won against abortion rights along the way, and what might come next from an emboldened conservative movement with the Supreme Court on their side.Sources:Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward, "Supreme Court Has Voted to Overturn Abortion Rights, Draft Opinion Shows," Politico, May 5, 20225-4 Podcast, "Dobbs v. On May 2, 2022, the website Poltico posted a story attributed to Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward sharing a leaked first draft of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) majority opinion on Dobbs vs Jackson Women's Health Organization addressing the constitutionality of a Mississippi law restricting abortion after the 15th week of pregnancy. The majority opinion draft, authored by Associate Justice Samuel Alito, overturned Roe v Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v Casey (1992), releasing the stranglehold the judicial branch has held over abortion and sending the issues to the individual states to settle the abortion laws within their borders through local democratic efforts and elections. Chief Justice John Roberts almost immediately verified the document's authenticity announcing the breach in secrecy which generally surround the deliberations of the Supreme Court would be met by an internal investigation. The draft and the decision were real. The outcry from both sides of the issue was immediate and intense. Most of the loudest objections to the draft center on emotional appeals and anecdotal testimonies about women who need abortions and will be forced to compromise their safety and freedom to carry an unwanted child to term. The idea that Roe v Wade will be overturned produced a wave of fear, anger, and anti-religious vitriol. How could 50 years of legal precedent defending Roe suddenly be swept aside? This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversion with JOURNAL author Jay Watts about the leaked SCOTUS opinion in Dobbs vs Jackson Women's Health Organization and about his online-exclusive article, “The Leaked Draft: Is this the Fall of Roe v. We look at some salient points from the leaked draft opinion in the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. The draft argues that the decisions of Roe vs. Wade and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey "must be overruled." Many pro-abortion activists are crying foul that this is judicial activism and an attack on a "fundamental right" to an abortion. When we see the arguments and the rules in both Roe and Casey detailed in the draft, they clearly are themselves judicial activism. There simply is no federal "right" to an abortion recognized by the Constitution as a compact among the states. If this draft passes, it does not ban abortions, despite the protests. It simply argues that the Supreme Court has no jurisdiction in the matter and that abortion is an issue for the states and their voters to decide by legislation. First is the article that broke the story: “Supreme Court Has Voted to Overturn Abortion Rights, Draft Opinion Shows” by Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward at Politico. An article titled “The Roe Leak Spotlights America's Crisis of Credibility” by Russell Moore in Christianity Today calls into question how Americans are to find trust in our governing institutions and the way matters are handled. And finally, it's worth reading “Roe v. Wade: Faith Leaders React to Leaked SCOTUS Opinion” by Emily McFarlan Miller at Religion News Service to see the reaction from faith leaders around the U.S. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog to read more insights from Dr. White on all matters of Church and culture.

It's been quite the week for the Supreme Court, releasing a decision in a case we were watching and responding to the unprecedented leak of a draft opinion in a case that captured the attention of the entire country. In this episode, Holly and Amanda break down Monday's ruling in Shurtleff v. Boston – about a city flying a Christian flag – and the recent decision in Ramirez v. Collier – concerning religion in the execution chamber. They also react to the big Supreme Court news this week: the leak of a draft opinion for Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization, the case challenging a Mississippi law that restricts abortion. Amanda and Holly share their reactions to what's happening at the Court and preview what's to come.    SHOW NOTES Segment 1: The leaked Dobbs draft opinion and a decision in Shurtleff v. Boston (segments starts at 00:55, the discussion of Shurtleff begins at 8:16) Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward of Politico broke the story with the leaked draft opinion: Supreme Court has voted to overturn abortion rights, draft opinion shows Amanda and Holly discussed Shurtleff v. Boston on two previous episodes this season: They previewed the oral arguments in episode 8 and reviewed the arguments – and made predictions – in episode 10. Read the Supreme Court's opinion in the case, written by Justice Stephen Breyer, and the concurring opinions at this link.   Segment 2: Say “yes” unless you have a really good reason to say “no” (starting at 23:41)  The Supreme Court issued its decision in Ramirez vs. Collier on March 24. Amanda and Holly discussed the case in episode 2 and episode 4. Read the Supreme Court's decision, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, the concurring opinions and Justice Clarence Thomas's dissent at this link. “RLUIPA” is shorthand for the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, which became law in 2000. The new filing from a district attorney in Ramirez v. Collier is discussed in this New York Times article by Ruth Graham: Days After Setting an Execution Date, a Texas Prosecutor Reverses Course   Segment 3: A rich holiday season (starting at 38:45) Amanda and Holly mentioned this article by Adelle Banks in Religion News Service: Second gentleman Doug Emhoff touts ‘critical' interfaith collaboration As always, you can contact Amanda and Holly by writing to RespectingReligion@BJConline.org. The news is monumental in every sense: a historic legal development, an unprecedented violation of Court protocol, and a decision that will have stunning consequences for women all across the country.  The Politico reporting by Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward includes a link to the draft opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito back in February. It's a draft opinion that decisively reverses Roe v. Wade and the legal precedent it set nearly 50 years ago.  We spoke with Prof. Melissa Murray of NYU School of Law and cohost of the legal podcast Strict Scrutiny and OB/GYN, abortion provider, and founder of Pegasus Health Justice Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi about their reaction to these recent developments and what this leaked opinion indicates for the future of reproductive rights.

In his own words: “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision, including the one on which the defenders of Roe and Casey now chiefly rely — the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.” Thus begins Justice Samuel Alito's February draft opinion that would end the constitutional right to an abortion in America, obtained exclusively by POLITICO's Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward. We knew this was coming. Ever since last December's oral arguments in the Mississippi abortion case, it seemed likely that there was a majority on the court to overrule Roe and Casey. But while not a surprise, it was still shocking to see Alito's words in black and white. The draft opinion, if it holds, would be the culmination of half a century of legal conservatives organizing around the idea that Roe was wrongly decided and needed to be reversed.
