The penultimate week in Link Up's Series 6 brings us back to Ontario with one of the most legendary breweries in the province - Wellington Brewery! Karyn joined Tiff and Cee to chat about their pioneering work with Queen of Craft and creating more gender equality in craft beer, the demographic changes they've seen over the years as a result of their efforts, how they try to make craft beer more accessible and approachable to more people, and where she sees beer going from here. They cracked open Welly's Link Up American Pale Ale, at 5.4% it rocks Sorachi Ace, Sasquatch, Topaz and Amarillo in the boil, and it's hazy, tropical, crushable and citrusy. Cheers!   About the Link Up season: We're back with a brand new season of BAOS Podcast, and this one is something very special and very close to us. We'll be focusing this entire season on Link Up, a non-profit started by the good folks behind Microbrasserie 5e Baron in Aylmer, QC and Tiffany and Cee here at BAOS and High Season Co. Our aim with this program is to help BIPOC from underrepresented communities learn about and enter the craft beer industry in essentially any area they wish - from a brewing apprentice to taking the Cicerone course for front-of-house opportunities, from hop farming to the yeast lab, from beer media to design and photography, we're here to help diversify an industry that is in dire need of it. For almost 40 years, Guelph's Wellington Brewery has kept Ontarians fuelled with fine English-style beer, and it was well overdue to have the legends on the pod. Karyn and Wilma joined Cee and Nate to chat about Welly's humble beginnings in the early '80s, how they've pivoted and grown over the years, the changes they've seen in the scene in their time at Welly, their exciting move into Sparkling Hop Water, their cask brews, how their Helles Lager marked a new era for the brewery, their early move into haze with Upside, and how their Queen of Craft festival has grown. We crushed a wicked lineup of Welly beers - Boot Lite, Helles Lager, Upside NEIPA, Sunshine, Special Pale Ale and Imperial Stout. This was a fantastic one, cheers! A large international company threatened a small Wellington Brewery with legal action over the marketing of a charity beer.  Abandonded Brewery in Porirua created a energy drink infused beer for Wellington's Rare Beer competition - a charity event raising money for rare disorders.  But on the morning of the event, Monster Energy warned the company to pull it's marketing or lawyers would get involved. The brewery had taken the iconic Monster 'M' and altered it and mashed it into their branding of the 5 kegs of limited edition beer.  Charlotte Cook spoke to the head brewer Charlotte Feehan about the controversy.  Monster Energy has been approached for comment.

Historically, women played a pretty big role in the brewing of beer. Starting in ancient times, brewing was fairly female-dominated, but that changed in western culture around the same time the brewing process became industrialized 150 years ago. In 2022, women are trying to reclaim their place atop the brewing world thanks to the proliferation of craft breweries, and one local woman is helping to lead the way. If you've ever seen a beer commercial, they make it pretty obvious that women are not the intended audience for the product. It's silly because obviously women like beer, and it doesn't make much sense to cut off half the prospective audience for your product. Of course, making room for women in brewing is one thing, making them feel comfortable in a predominately male atmosphere is another. Nine years ago, Karyn Boscariol launched the first ever Queen of Craft, and its purpose was twofold: To acquaint beer-curious women with the art and craft of making and tasting beer, and to raise money for charity, specifically Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis who've received over $50,000 from the event. So, on the brink of the returning to a face-to-face Queen of Craft, we're going to ask the Queen herself to tell us all about the secret to her success. On this week's podcast, Boscariol will tell us about the origins of Queen of Craft, and how she got interested in beer. She will also talk about how the Queen of Craft events change every year (at least with one exception), and how it's changed forever now that Queen of Craft is going back to in-person events. And finally, she discuss the importance of the fundraising Queen of Craft does, and whether or not there's such a thing as too much craft beer. So let's talk about creating more Queens of the Craft on this week's Guelph Politicast! The first Queen of Craft event for 2022 is this coming Saturday at 10C Shared Space, and it will continue for the next four Saturdays. You can see the schedule and find links to tickets at the Wellington Brewery website. You can also follow Queen of Craft on Facebook. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Find more episodes of the Politicast here, or download them on your favourite podcast app at Apple, Stitcher, Google, TuneIn and Spotify . In the first of two podcasts this month, featuring Wellington brewery, Mirella chats over the phone with brewer Marvin Dyck. Marvin delves into the Wellington Imperial Stout, detailing some of its ingredients and explaining how it's made as well as why it's the most complex beer in the Wellington Brewery portfolio. The pair then chat about Wellington's Boot Chuck IPA, which was released as a seasonal this year. Marvin mentions the annual boot toss event at Wellington brewery, which inspired the name of this IPA. Mirella then inquires about the style of this beer, and learns that this particular IPA is a hybrid. Marvin and Mirella then turn their attention to cask-conditioned ale and how its popularity has fluctuated over the years. Marvin talks about why he likes making cask-conditioned ale and then shares some of his other favourite projects.
