Watch along at https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRkso3AeKZUk2kT_iXfXP8PCb6iaufS48&si=7nKxhyHpiA2z0QQm Episode 10: "Tales from the Cryptkeeper" The popular cult horror comic books from the 1950s are adapted in this cartoon anthology series. Tales from the Cryptkeeper is an animated horror children's television series made by Canadian studio Nelvana. The series was broadcast on ABC in the United States, and on ITV in the United Kingdom. It is based on the 1950s EC Comics series Tales from the Crypt and the live action television series of the same name, which aired concurrently on HBO. Intended for children, Tales from the Cryptkeeper is significantly milder than its live-action counterpart, and all blood, gore, profanity and sexual content are completely removed to be more appropriate for the target audience. Most episodes take place within the fictional city of Gravenhurst, California. The series details the Cryptkeeper telling more kid-friendly horror stories to the viewers, each with a teachable lesson. The second season has the Cryptkeeper at constant odds with rivals, and fellow EC Comics horror hosts, the Vault-Keeper and the Old Witch, who continually try to steal the show from him as they didn't have one of their own, only to have their plans backfire. The Cryptkeeper can be found in different locales than his mansion, as he tries to elude his foes. The third and final season aired in 1999. Unlike the first two seasons, it, under New Tales from the Cryptkeeper, aired on Teletoon in Canada and on CBS in the United States. This season sees the Cryptkeeper taking a more active role, usually by setting up situations to teach frightening lessons to kids with severe character flaws. Show notes Two Toronto community leaders have gone public about a legal fight involving one of Canada's oldest Zionist organizations, which also runs Camp Shalom, a 75-year-old Jewish summer camp in Ontario. David Matlow, a CJN columnist who also lectures widely about Theodore Herzl, has taken the little-known Toronto Zionist Council to court over allegedly restricting who can be a member, claiming the organization only allows Jews who hold right-wing political views on Israel and Zionism. His legal case also alleges years of financial mismanagement by the organization's former (and one current) directors, negatively impacting the TZC's neglected Toronto headquarters at 788 Marlee Avenue, and Camp Shalom, in Gravenhurst, Ont. The lawsuit has been before the courts since August 2022. But while it continues, Matlow's not-so-quiet pressure campaign has already resulted in a partial victory: the replacement of nearly all the longtime TZC directors at the centre of his allegations. Guidy Mamman, a Toronto immigration lawyer, was named the new president of the TZC board, and says he's vowing to set things right. He wants to help Camp Shalom grow, fix the office building on Marlee, investigate any financial wrongdoing and even try to retrieve any allegedly missing money.  On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we bring you the full fascinating back story with plaintiff David Matlow and with new TZC president, Guidy Mammon. What we talked about: Read our first part of the investigation into the squalid conditions of The Toronto Zionist Council's headquarters at 788 Marlee Ave., in The CJN. As Canadian Jewish kids begin settling into their cabins and tents at overnight camp this month, they'll find some of the camps are offering something extra: mental health support teams. Whether an on-site emotional support dog or a nighttime ritual of journaling positive achievements, camps are adding mental health components including 24-hour support professionals. They're called “camper care directors” or “spiritual coordinators”. With training and degrees in social work and child psychology, they make sure the campers (and also camp counsellors) have the emotional support they need to deal with anxiety, bullying, eating disorders, severe homesickness and other mental health challenges that arise while they spend weeks away from the familiarity of parents and home. On this episode of The CJN Daily, we speak with Toronto social worker Lynda Fishman, the camper care team lead for Camp Shalom, in Gravenhurst, Ont., about why parents shouldn't grab their car keys if they feel worried by their kids' first letter home. Welcome to one of the most squalid Jewish-owned office buildings in Canada: 788 Marlee Ave. in midtown Toronto. Over the years, it's been home to countless Zionist organizations and Jewish charities—including Mazon Canada, Canadian Young Judaea, Sar-El Canada, Camp Shalom, Machane Lev summer camp, the Association for Soldiers of Israel, Canadian Friends of Yad Sarah, and more. Some tenants have been complaining for years about the conditions, including a rat infestation; mould on lobby ceilings; extensive water damage from a leaky roof and broken skylights; elevators that haven't been inspected since at least 2020; bathrooms with no lights and broken sinks; and a toilet with human feces that wasn't cleaned in eight months. The city has cited the building several times for garbage violations and uncut grass. The conditions have become so bad that at least one tenant moved out permanently in May. Others choose not to work in their offices much, except to drop off the rent. On top of it all, there are two lawsuits filed in the Ontario courts against the longtime owners of the building, the Toronto Zionist Council. Among the lengthly list of allegations in the court documents are accusations of wilful negligence, misappropriation of money (particularly by one of the directors, Paul Rotenberg, to the tune of at least $70,000), forgery, deliberate misconduct and allowing the once-proud symbol of the Zionist movement in Canada to fall into “appalling” conditions. The TZC also owns a 75-year-old summer camp in Gravenhurst, Ont., called Camp Shalom, which is also discussed in the court documents, amidst questions wondering where the money to upgrade the camp has gone. The CJN will be publishing several reports as part of this exclusive investigation. To start, on today's episode of The CJN Daily, we take you inside 788 Marlee Ave. You'll hear from Mazon's Izzy Waxman; Jessie Lash, the owner of a catering business; and Roni Perez, who served on the board of the ground-floor synagogue known as The Marlee Shul. What we talked about Take a video tour of 788 Marlee Ave. on The CJN's YouTube channel Toronto Zionist Council director Paul Rotenberg has spoken out often in favour of expanding Jewish settlements in the West Bank, including in 2016 in The CJN Read why the Canada Revenue Agency revoked charitable status of the Toronto Zionist Council's charity, the Zionist Organization of Canada Charitable Fund, in 1995, for funnelling money illegally to settlements in the West Bank A new charity has been set up with a similar name by the same directors of the Toronto Zionist Council, now called the Ontario Jewish Education Association, in Toronto, since July 24, 2020. Episode #42 - Deep diving into some fascinating waters with Virginia Barry to talk about sorority and sisterhood, the importance of safety on the water, and her competitive spirit.  From The Village of Wentworth Heights in Hamilton, our first debutante on the green bench and a life-long member of a worldwide sorority, Beta Sigma Phi. Joining Beta Sigma Phi at the age of 18 in 1952, she loves the sisterhood where she learned about formal table settings, formal greetings, banquets, volunteering and more. Her Toronto Chapter (Beta Omicron) worked with Sick Kids Hospital. She used to go for weekend retreats with her sorority sisters. She named the annual ball, The Yellow Rose Ball. A yellow rose is special, it is what you gift someone who is special in your life. A Debutante is an upper-class young woman making her first appearance in fashionable society.  Learning dances such as the Waltz, Foxtrot, Quick Step and more prior to attended the ball at the Royal York in Toronto.  She is very proud. A swimming champ Virginia retired in 1991 from work, and decided to take up swimming at the local pool. There she saw a man who was always swimming lengths, Virginia decided that she would keep up with him. She was counting on this stranger to keep her going… it worked! In 1997, while in Florida she joined a swim team called the Silver Streaks. They were competitive and she ended up at the Huntsman Senior Games – it is like the Olympics for Seniors. There were 4,000 participants and she won a gold and six bronze medals.  "Competition in swimming, badminton, tennis, volleyball and canoeing was for my own enjoyment." - Virginia Barry "The best kind of sport is when you are competing against yourself for your personal best." -Erin Davis Basic Canoe Skills can be found at Paddle Canada, a community of trusted leaders whose aim is to connect Canadians to nature through canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding with certified Paddle Canada instructors. https://www.paddlecanada.com/ Virginia gave her father's canoe to the museum, it is on display in Gravenhurst. On the Red Current River in Missouri, she was tossed out of the canoe in the rapids. The near-death experience did not stop her from getting in a canoe again. "I've had a lot of wise seniors in my life, and it continues. How blessed I am." - Erin Davis   Subscribe, rate, and review our podcast on any network and share your thoughts on social media using the #ElderWisdom tag to help others find us. ----more---- The Green Bench is a symbol of elder wisdom. Physically or virtually, the bench invites us all to sit alongside a senior, share a conversation, or give and offer advice. It challenges the stigma seniors face; the ageism still so prevalent in society. It reminds us of the wealth of wisdom our elders offer and in doing so, helps restore them to a place of reverence. Small town, big mystery. Gloria Ferris writes in several genres, but today we're talking about her Cornwall and Redfern mysteries, specifically book #3 in the series, Skull Garden. Small towns in Ontario are some of my favorite places in the world. I grew up visiting my paternal grandparents outside Gravenhurst, and now have an uncle who lives in the exact area near Lake Huron that Gloria is writing about in these books. So it was very easy for me to picture the landscape and architecture as Gloria read from her book, which was a delight. In the introduction, I also mention a class I took recently on using the Enneagram to create characters. I loved the class and it made me reflect that there is always something new to learn about writing, which I love. Sometimes it can be intimidating, but mostly I love learning and hopefully improving my craft. Today's show is supported by my patrons at Patreon. Thank you! When you become a patron for as little as $1 a month you receive a short mystery story each and every month. And the rewards for those who love mystery stories go up from there! So, she turned to fiction writing and is now the award-winning author of the humorous Cornwall & Redfern mysteries; a co-written Suspense series; and a YA urban fantasy series. Occasionally, she writes a short story just for the heck of it. Gloria lives in southwestern Ontario and is a member of the International Thriller Writers and the Alliance of Independent Authors. Excerpt from Skull Garden CHAPTER ONE  I eased the Savage to the edge of the pavement and cut the engine. Chesley swung a lanky leg over my head and hopped off the back seat. While he checked his teeth for bugs, I spread a hand-drawn map across the seat. “It should be around here somewhere,” I told him.  Consulting the compass duct-taped to my dash, I faced north and pointed to a gentle incline covered with a century’s worth of pine growth. “It might be on the other side of that hill.” Hunting for a graveyard abandoned over a hundred years ago is no easy task, especially if the township records suck. Chesley hung my spare helmet over a handlebar and tucked his chin-length hair behind his ears. “The cemetery could be inside the thicket. The undergrowth’s had plenty of time to cover the gravesites.” The June afternoon heated up, and I stripped off my helmet and jacket. “I hope not. I want to take photos of any inscriptions, count up the headstones, and call it done.” “How did Glory talk you into this? Seems odd she’d care about old burials.” “She thinks she's my boss. She assumed I’d do it on a volunteer basis.” I snorted. “As if. So, she offered me minimum wage. I refused, but made a fatal mistake. I said I’d need the rate the town was giving summer students. After an epic tantrum, she gave in and pointed me towards the municipal archives for maps.” We crossed the road and ploughed through an expanse of waist-high grass. If the cemetery was inside the gloomy stand of trees, Chesley might come in handy, to serve as bear bait. I shoved him into the lead. As interim mayor of Lockport, a town of 7,000 hardy souls on the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario, Glory Yates was on a crazy power trip. Who cared if there were burial grounds being overtaken by time in the wilds of the township? Dust to dust, right? Apparently not. She wanted them located, inventoried,

The Roy Green Show Podcast - Canada has taken the lead in refugee settlement for the first time in 72 years, according to new data compiled by a researcher at the University of Calgary. In 2018, Canada received more planned refugees than any other country. Is it fair that Canada is shouldering so much of the worldwide refugee resettlement burden? We've been hearing about them for weeks now – the Yellow Vest protesters. Who are they? We know the movement started in France in response to fuel tax hikes, but what message is behind the movement that has established itself in Canada? Roy speaks with Mark Friesen, a Yellow Vest organizer from Saskatchewan, to get an idea of what the movement in Canada is all about. Mark is also an organizer of the truck convoy that is planning to travel from Alberta to Ottawa to protest numerous policies of the Trudeau government. And then, Roy is joined by a University of Western Ontario professor who says northern countries are under pressure from the United Nations Agenda on Social Development, which includes the Compact on Migration. Professor Salim Mansur wrote a column in the American Thinker entitled ‘Justin Trudeau's Canada Embraces a World Without Borders'. Lyle and Carol Brons are the parents of the Humboldt Broncos' athletic therapist Dayna Brons, who lost her life in the horrific bus crash last April. They join Roy to weigh in on the five days of sentencing hearings for Jaskarit Singh Sidhu that are scheduled to begin tomorrow. Singh Sidhu has pleaded guilty to all criminal charges related to the deaths and injuries on the Broncos team bus, which was struck by the massive semi-truck he was driving. We often discuss the perpetrators of crime in Canada, but what about the victims? Roy is joined by a pair of guests to discuss what victims of crime face when dealing with the justice system and how it both works and doesn't work. When Joe Wamback's son Jonathan was 15 years old, he was horribly beaten by a gang in a park directly across from the family home in Newmarket, Ontario. Since then, Joe and his wife Lozanne have devoted their lives to working with and for victims of crime. In 2012, Joe walked across Canada to raise awareness of crime and victims. He's appeared before parliament and the Senate, and has organized events across Canada for crime victims. Scott Newark is a friend of the show and a frequent guest with years of experience dealing with the Canadian justice system. He's a former Alberta crown prosecutor, former executive director of the Ontario Office for Victims of Crime and former senior policy advisor to a federal Minister for Public Safety. Roy, Joe and Scott are later joined by Jessie Melo, the daughter of Canadian boxer Eddie "The Hurricane" Melo who was murdered in a contract killing by Charles Gagne. Melo's killer is currently serving a life sentence with no eligibility for parole for 12 years at the Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst, Ontario. Gagne, with numerous armed robberies on his record has received a 60-day work pass with no supervision required.  Jessie Melo is furious about the work pass development, both with how secretively it's been handled and that the prosecutor in Gagne's murder trial is now Gagne's chief booster. Pinch punch - the first of the month... Last Friday was the start of September, and John and Luke were joined in tQHQ by Barry The Barber and Todd The Dog. Abandoning their usual tack of bringing you the best in new music, they picked a selection of ABCs (anthems, bangers, classics) which remind them of the history of the site. During the show John also had his haircut (but thankfully not like Phil Oakey) by Barry The Barber and the music came from Hey Colossus, Blacknecks, Erasure, LCD Soundsystem, The Ex, Gazelle Twin, Destroyer, NOMEANSNO, Kelala, Turbonegro, The Chromatics, Double S & Wiley, some madness to do with rollercoasters that Seb chose, Ibibio Sound Machine, Gravenhurst and of course The Fall. This show was just one of many on (what will hopefully be) the inaugural Quietus Day Of Radio. Thanks to everyone who was part of this 12 hour epic - especially Seb and Iain... we spent the whole period celebrating the best in underground, DIY and global music. We were also joined by Saul of Fat White Family, Nadine Shah, Steve Davis and Kavus Torabi and the Last Skeptic, it's no surprise we ended up trending on Twitter. And that's before we get to the mind expanding exploration of Japanese psych and foghorns by Jennifer Lucy-Allan; a trip round the extreme metal fringes of India with Pavan & Pravin Mukhi (aka Foreign Beggars); Ruth Barnes (The Other Woman) and Piney Gir playing indie, folk and exotica; the heroic and inimitable Lone Taxidermist, not to mention appearances from all the Quietus staffers. So even though it was the site's ninth birthday on Friday you might be forgiven for wondering why our celebratory mood has been tempered with anxiety - like Edvard Munch's The Scream in a party hat. This is because we're currently unlikely to make our tenth birthday - or even the end of the year - without some financial assistance from you, dear reader - and apologies if you've already read this once this week but it really bears repeating - we're facing closure. I have to say that I think it's absolutely crazy given we are Europe's biggest, fully independent music and culture website, reaching an annual audience of millions all over the globe, with a constant supply of high quality articles and content by some of the best writers in the game, and yet again this month we'll be having a whip round, reaching down the back of the sofa, taking the hammer to the piggy bank, emptying the penny jar and selling the prized vinyl on Discogs, just so we can make the rent. Because online magazines tend to be overly reliant on banner advertising (something we're working on a solution to behind the scenes) and we're not venture capital/ rich parent/ tax loss funded, we are being absolutely hammered by the recent catastrophic 90% drop off in online ad spend - not to mention the all-too-predictable chicanery by monolithic money hoovering digital monopolies such as Google and Facebook, which has amounted to an arsenic cherry on the cyanide birthday cake this year. If it helps you to visualise the problem, imagine an egg that a seven year old has painted the face of Jarvis Cocker onto. Now that you have conjured this image into being, picture a cyberman on shore leave pissed up at last orders. Now picture the cyberman - with a semi on and a heart full of hatred - punching the Jarvis egg with all of his terrible might. Do you see the problem? Now, undoubtedly, there will be some among you who cry: "Why should we care? What good are music magazines in this day and age when everything's already online?" This is a completely fair point, to which I have a simple response: "Have you found any music via the Quietus over the last 12 months?"
