On this episode of This vs. That, we explore the important distinction between practical theology and prideful theology with guest Wendy Alsup, author and math professor. We discuss how true theology should lead to humility and practical life changes, while examining why theological discussions sometimes become prideful and condescending. Through personal stories and biblical wisdom, we unpack how genuine knowledge of God naturally results in humility and transformed lives. Together, we consider ways to foster meaningful theological discussions that build up the church rather than create division, and explore how our understanding of God directly shapes our daily actions and emotions.---We're really excited to tell you about Anchored Virtual's new podcast, Consult the Counselor. Wendy Alsup and Amber discuss her time as deacon of women's theology at Mars Hill Church, how and why she was able to continue clinging to Jesus in the midst of suffering, and what a good Jesus hermeneutic has to do with it. Questions Discussed During Clinging to God When Your Church Falls Apart: You served as a Deacon in charge of Women's Theology and Training at Mars Hill in Seattle. Share your experience of stepping into that role and the ways you were able to serve women during that season With the success of The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill podcast, many now have a more robust view of power struggles and abuse in the church. Were you able to continue teaching and serving women practical theology on a weekly basis, while behind the scenes the staff was “blowing up”? Expound on that a bit. You eventually left. What was that process like for you both emotionally and spiritually? What I love about your story is you didn't walk away from God or the Bible despite being deeply wounded by God's people. At one point you said, “A lot of people had problems with Mark Driscoll and just wrote off the Bible: ‘Well, if that's what the Bible teacher says, obviously, there's something wrong with the Bible.' But I believed in the Bible a long time before I ever got to know Mark Driscoll, and I'm going to believe in it now. So I don't think the problem's with the Bible.” Talk to us about what you think made a difference in your clinging to God and His Word vs. friends, colleagues, strangers who walk away. I think having written books like, Practical Theology for Women and The Gospel-Centered Woman helped to ground you in truth of God's character and what He says about His people, but not everyone has the foundation. Speak directly to the wounded soul, particularly the one who's been wounded by those in a position of spiritual authority. In “I Forgive You,” you weave some of your own personal journey of forgiveness in with the story of Joseph and how we witness him forgive. What hope do we find in Joseph's story? How can we apply some of those same principles to the people we need to forgive? SHOW NOTES cont. When forgiveness feels impossible! “I forgive you.” Simple words, and liberating ones – but hard, too. You may think the betrayal you have experienced is in the realm of the unforgivable. Wendy Alsup understands. She experienced severe church conflict while serving in the women's ministry at Mars Hill Church, followed by an unwanted divorce. The losses of betrayal eventually forced her to move from her home in Seattle, leaving behind deep friendships and everything familiar to her two sons. Her understanding of forgiveness did not come easily for her so she does not sugarcoat the struggles she experienced. In this special Help & Hope Podcast, Wendy joins us for our summer Beyond the Book – Ask the Author series. Invited guests submitted questions for Wendy, and her answers reveal deep wisdom and understanding for those struggling with the concept of forgiveness. Some of the questions Wendy answers: · How do you get past the astonishment, hurt, and dislike for a person you cared for, had a relationship with, and enjoyed when they have repeatedly turned against you? · How do you "move on" in forgiveness when you still have to interact with people who hurt you? · After you left Mars Hill, lots of your friends stayed. Did you pursue them to tell them your story, your reasons for leaving in an attempt to get them to leave, too? How do you let go of the need to protect your reputation or do you? · When someone asks you to forgive them for an offense, does it mean that you will never bring up the offense again? · Through conflict our church leadership mishandled, a lot of friends and I lost our strong church family – none of us feels as though we will ever find such a loving community again. How do you venture back into church life when you feel so cynical? · How does understanding ambiguous loss help us better understand our own grief over broken relationships, especially when we are powerless to effect any change in the circumstances? · And many more. Many people have experienced betrayal, someone violating your trust perhaps by lying, cheating, some kind of abuse, putting their own interests ahead of yours when they promised otherwise. In this conversation with Sharon Betters, Wendy Alsup shares the impact of betrayal from her own life, not only through an unwanted divorce but also in her church life. Pride month just wrapped up. Favorite children's shows are featuring LGBTQ content. School curricula, corporate policies, and legislation are swiftly changing. Many parents wonder how to navigate conversations about all of this with their children of all ages. Of course conversations with our kids begin with conversations with ourselves. We have to ask what we really believe, on what we base our convictions, and how to pass the truth on to our children. On this episode of All Things we talk through some foundational reminders about the character and goodness of our God, his design and mercy in creation, his trustworthiness as our Maker and Savior, and his good, beautiful, and true words, which hold out life to you and me and to our children. As culture quickly changes, our God does not. We can anchor ourselves to him and share his words of life with others. He is not anxious, nor do we need be. He is sovereign and kind and able to minister to us and through us, as well as our children, and all those we love and work with and live with. In this cultural moment it's easy to feel embarrassed, awkward, or apologetic for a Biblical sexual ethic. But the warm and hard words of Jesus have been a light in the dark forever and that's not changing now. Christian, as you hold out grace and truth, you hold out life. Speak life to your kids, to yourself, and to those in your sphere. Sometimes one of the hardest places in suffering is the isolation and loneliness of pain. In this conversation with Sharon Betters, Wendy Alsup shares how suffering came in wave after wave, leaving her breathless and lonely. In one particularly dark and painful period after intense surgery for cancer, Wendy discovered she was not truly alone. Though her pain was not alleviated, she found comfort and strength in experiencing intimacy with the Lord Who walks with us in suffering. Wendy describes how the Lord is our companion in suffering, even when we must walk alone.

Time to go Beyond the Blog if you will with Pastor Derek Brown. Recently he posted some good stuff online: Pastor, Beware of Subtle Self-Promotion has some big ideas that aren't limited just to pastors. He also weighed in on God's leading. He poses a good question: When God Closes a Door, Does He Open a Window?  Plus, yesterday we were talking about how this season is impacting the local church. But there's a lot more to this. Some ministries are closing their doors.  The discipleship ministry Wendy Alsup works with recently shut down. They were no longer able to pay the barebones staff that had been treading water until churches could host them again. Wendy joins us to share some insights the Lord led her to through in the life of Jeremiah. Don't miss the application God wants to apply to your challenge this morning!

But today, that reply feels disingenuous at best, considering the global pandemic, the racial reckoning across our nation, and the general polarization in society. Saying we are doing just fine, even when we're not, lines up with our country's indefatigable spirit. We are a nation of overcomers and go-getters—people who suck it up and keep moving ahead.

Wendy is burdened for women to appreciate and know the Bible. So beyond talking lizards and women, she's here to help us understand: What do we do with the tough passages of scripture - passages where women are taken advantage of, oppressed, killed? There are loads of untidy and discouraging accounts of injustice in the Bible hard to handle and difficult to find the message in the mess. There's much a pastor can learn from Wendy's book to better engage his congregation with compassion and understanding. So let's talk lizards and ladies!

There’s a verse in the Bible that says “do not be anxious about anything.” um, excuse me, have you ever lived in my shoes? Sometimes we think our anxieties about life are just a byproduct of living, sometimes we deal with them or cover them up, but somedays they ultimately defeat us. Today we are looking at what the Bible says about anxiety and uncover the root of why our hearts are really anxious. This is part 1 of a two part series.  Biblical Worship Music for Your Kids! Anxiety - A Faith Misplaced Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Anxiety is often diagnosed as a thinking problem. If we just changed our thought patterns then we could manage our anxieties - as if the problem is rooted in manifesting positivity.  But From a biblical worldview anxiety is a faith issue. It’s rooted in our belief system. We are anxious when we put our faith in something other than God. When we put our trust in other things, anxiety will fill our hearts.  We need faith in a right view of God and His promises - not just in what we think about God.  Wendy Alsup in her book “Practical Theology for Women” says, “many of us come to God with unbiblical notions of who He is and what He does. We’ve let our culture and upbringing, rather than the Bible itself, determine the character traits we attribute to God." Authentic faith comes from an understanding of God’s true nature and promises found in Scripture alone. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Hope in Repentance and Belief The hope in being honest about a lack of faith is that we can repent of that sin and turn back to God and His Truth. When we repent for not trusting God, God forgives us and restores us and blesses us.  Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. How Complementarian Churches Can Support Female Leadership

Quick to Listen

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2016 33:03

Where can complementarian women go to find female teachers? For many, the answer lies outside of the local church. Because of theological beliefs, most complementarian churches don’t let women preach. Many also struggle to elevate women’s voices within their own congregations, indirectly encouraging women to look outside the church—at times to blogs, social media, and Christian publishing—for leadership. (Read CT’s previous coverage.) Part of the reason for the lack of voices stems from a historic distrust of female leadership, argues Wendy Alsup, who formerly led women’s ministries at Mars Hill Church in Seattle. “I think more and more people who identify as complementarian are putting away suspicions that women want to remove men from their places of leadership but it’s taken work to get to that place where their gifts are welcome,” she said. But women’s ministry can thrive in complementarian settings. A pastor and church elder board which seeks to affirm women’s voices is characterized by a “celebratory attitude” that values “every member of the body of a Christ,” says Elizabeth Inrig, who previously led women’s ministries for the Evangelical Free Church of America Inrig and Alsup joined Morgan and Richard on Quick to Listen to discuss the practical ways that complementarian churches can be intentional about including women’s voices, the roles of pastors wives, and how male participation at church affects female involvement.
