Chances are that nothing from the Poohniverse will be in our favorite movies of any year. But that will not stop us from talking about it every chance we get. Blood and Honey may have burned us so badly we have not even considered watching another entry, but maybe the combined powers of the twisted versions of Peter Pan, Tigger, and Mary Poppins will be enough to save the burgeoning franchise.Until Dawn is the flip side. It is a creative video game that brings audiences into its world better than some of the horror movies it is influenced by. The only surprise is that it took this long to turn it into a movie. Early test screenings have been positive. Unless you ever played the video game. There were a lot of great genre releases in 2024. The Substance has rightfully received the lion's share of attention. Along with the fantastic performances from Moore and Margaret Qualley, it has a great story and fantastic gore. It is not just one of the best horror movies of the year; it can stand up to anything that can out during the year. Independent horror had a record setting year. Late Night With the Devil became the biggest release in the history of IFC. It is a unique take on found footage and has some of the most memorable moments of the year. Thanks in part to its clever marketing campaign, Longlegs became a surprise box office hit. We talk about why it still resonates with us and what it means to genre cinema in general. Some of the best horror films of the year flew under the radar. Stopmotion featured some of the best storytelling of the year, Realm of Satan is a unique look at Satanists, and Falling Stars is a modern folk horror tale that is relatable and creepy. We have a lot to talk about on this week's show. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. John is joined by his partner and Puck Superfriend Dylan Byers to look back on the year that was on the Byers beat. John and Dylan shake their heads and let the brickbats fly at the sight of a procession of mega-rich entertainment and tech CEOs bowing and scraping before Donald Trump. They also dig into Dylan's year-end lists of the media industry's most significant macro trends, its three biggest winners and three sorriest losers; and theorize on why 2024 saw a resurgence in the commercial fortunes and cultural sway of the podcast game. We had a long talk about the Terrfier franchise and Art the Clown last week. Based on the surprising box office receipts from this past weekend, it would seem we are in the minority. When did that ever change our opinions? Plus, everybody dies. And that's fucked up.Has there ever been an internet challenge that isn't stupid? Ghost Game offers up possibly the dumbest one yet. Those who do the challenge are tasked to break into a house and live with the inhabitant without getting caught. Bad idea for a prank; great premise for a horror movie.Along with a great premise, Ghost Game boasts a near perfect setting. It takes place in a home that looks just like you think a haunted house should. The grounded story gives a different feel to what is otherwise a very traditional horror story. It operates on many levels. It is a shame that the writing is unable to keep up. The characters lack motivation and much of the plot feels directionless. We do not expect much from any haunted house movie; we just want to have a good time. For everything it does right, Ghost Game does even more wrong.Falling Stars is a modern folk horror tale about witches. Putting the story in the isolated American southwest is a wise decision. There is a sense of loneliness and fear that goes beyond the supernatural. Paradoxically, the idea of togetherness is a very strong theme. The film is a patient one that builds tension through strong storytelling. The performances are fantastic and there is great chemistry between the three leads. It is a slow burn, but it is something to put on your radar. Falling Stars tells a beautiful and frightening story that works for any time of year. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Between 1943 and 1961, in the early years of Shannon international airport, over 200 hundred lives were lost and countless others changed forever in a series of fatal air crashes. Peter McGarry has extensively researched these crashes for his book, Falling Stars: Lost stories from the Shannon airport crashes. Peter joined Pat in studio this morning.

Dublin-based artist Naoise Roo released her second album Emotionally Magnificent on October 27 and brings the curtain down on the project with 'The Last Headline Show Ever Probably' at the Workman's Club on Friday, February 2, featuring special guests Paddy Hanna and Clara Tracey and support from Danny Carroll. On this episode, Naoise talks about some of the reasons why the project is coming to an end and we talk through Emotionally Magnificent track by track. Buy the album: https://naoiseroo.bandcamp.com/merch/emotionally-magnificent-vinyl-special-edition Sign up to the TPOE newsletter (free): https://tpoe.substack.com/ --- Naoise Roo's Instagram message about 'The Last Headline Show Ever Probably': Years ago, I remember seeing an update on Simple Kid's website that included a picture of him and the words "Simple Kid is working out what he wants to do with the rest of his life" or some similar sentiment. I've thought about that a lot over the years. I think its time to explore some other things. There is never a time that seems easy to stop; it always feels like sustainable creative success is just around the corner, that you are waiting on a bus to speed you towards a new destination. However, those of us who have been in this game a long time are often faced with the realisation that the destination doesn't really exist — or when it does, no one knows how long it will last. I think I'd like to switch gears and take a paddleboat somewhere, nowhere in particular. I don't really care about success in the traditional sense. I do, however, care about peace, and trying to be the best version of my creative self. Over the last few years, I have realised that the aspects of this work I value the most involve being in the studio, being with people I love and trust, and making something magic. I am far more suited to this cocoon, rather than the emerging butterfly stage of this vocation. Experiencing major losses last year reminded me how emotionally exhausting this industry can be. Being solo is lonely, even though it obviously takes a village to make things happen and I've been privileged to have support across many things. I could conceivably have a hiatus and not make such a boundary, but truthfully I think I want to create space in my life for other things, ideas, projects and also just to be. I've loved making this music and playing this music. I am so intensely grateful that people have written about my music, shared it with other people or have supported me by coming to the shows and buying records and merch. I am also endlessly grateful to all the people I made music with. It would mean a lot if yall would come on Feb 2nd and we see this thing out in style in Workmans. --- From the press release: Released via North Carolina label Schoolkids Records, Emotionally Magnificent is offered as the culmination of a chapter of a journey that takes in both Lilith and Naoise Roo's 2020 Sick Girlfriend EP, whose four tracks are incorporated here. Combined, it honours the full, sprawling majesty of Naoise Roo as a singular artist. Rather than some throwaway snapshot, released as a mere means to an end, Emotionally Magnificent is a slow focus triumph of reflection and resolve. “The Sick Girlfriend EP had a lot to do with my mental health and how I felt about navigating the music industry,” says Naoise Roo. “‘Falling Stars,' for example, is about watching all these talented people around me hitting the wall and leaving music because it's just too hard to keep going. ‘Sick Girlfriend' itself is basically about the trope of the manic pixie dream girl and how that's exploited, sexualized or slandered.”

In today's episode, we read where the sun and moon were darkened, and the world is plunged into turmoil. We read of a falling star that is an angel, and he unlocks the bottomless pit. This unleashes smoke into the air, and then there are beings described as locusts that come out of the pit. These aren't your ordinary locusts! We merge from this into talking about some of the Islamic beliefs of the Muslims, and Ishmaelites. In our Q&A segment, we answer the question: Should the book of Ecclesiastes be in our Bibles? It sure seems like Solomon is very negative, and we know that he had women problems.Hang on today, for things get very interesting!
In the history of science, many individuals are honoured by having technical terms named after them. To modern sensibilities, this is sometimes regrettable. Poet Dr Sam Illingworth looks at the challenges of scientific terms named after people we perhaps wouldn't celebrate today. Who gets to choose them anyway? It's one thing to quietly change the name of a scientific prize, a research facility or a lecture theatre. But how would you rename an element or a famous equation? With a book, a record or a painting we can choose to leave them on the shelf if we so wish, but some scientific names seem as hard-wearing as concrete... Photo: The Pillars of Creation as captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope/JWST Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI Written and presented by Sam Illingworth Produced by Alex Mansfield With contributions from: Dr Emma Chapman, University of Nottingham author of "First Light" Sam Kean, historian of science and author of "The Disappearing Spoon" and "The Icepick Surgeon". Prof Natalie Bann, University of Victoria, British Columbia Derek Robertson, artist, co-author of "Bho Bheul An Eòin / From The Bird's Mouth" Derek's exhibition of the project is at the Scottish Poetry Library, Edinburgh until Dec 31st 2022.

Episode 233: During the harsh winter of 1941, as World War II raged elsewhere, closer to home, a tragedy occurred on the remote, ice-covered island archipelago in Hudson Bay called the Belcher Islands. After witnessing a dramatic meteor shower, a tribal group of Inuit people believed the world was ending. Inspired by a copy of the New Testament Bible translated into Inuit syllabics by Anglican missionaries, 27-year-old Charlie Ouyerack, self-professed shaman of the tribe, claimed he was the second coming of Jesus Christ. Charlie determined his friend, Peter Sala, a skilled hunter and navigator, to be God. Their cult, Charlie, Peter, Peter's sister Mina and their followers, labelled any deniers as satanic heretics, eventually leading to the brutal murders of nine people within the group.
