Eric has been a guest on the podcast on episode RSR122 to talk about his start in music and writing the song “One Of Us” for Joane Osborne on his kitchen table. So please go check out that episode too. Also, make sure to catch his video series Under The Hood where Eric breaks down all his music and writing methods. Email in 2021 “...Being stuck in Stockholm with limited resources (a 2012 MacBook Pro, Apollo Twin, one Gefell mic, a couple of electric guitars, a mandola, a keyboard controller, and a short scale Gretsch bass that my son bought when was twelve) afforded me the time and motivation to make my first solo album in almost twenty years. Drums were cut by my drummer in Philadelphia (challenging considering his total lack of engineering experience, but I made it work), and by my other drummer in Slovenia (recorded by a producer/engineer genius in an amazing studio). I mixed it myself on a pair of Yamaha HS5s, with a lot of input from some legendary mixers (including our pal John Fields), mastered by my guy in Slovenia. My guest today is Geoff Daking who grew up playing in local bands before attending American University which he ultimately left to join the NY based Mercury artist Blues Magoos to play the drums in 1966 (I was born in 1967).  Between ‘66 and '69, they recorded four albums, two of which were platinum, and a top-five single, “We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet”. The peak of their career was in 1967 when they toured four months with Herman's Hermits and The Who (the Hermits were the headliners). During that time he became fascinated with recording and engineered some of the Magoos last albums. In the summer of 1969, Geoff went back to Woodstock where he played in bands with Tim Harden, Dave Sanborn, Paul Butterfield and Buzzy Feiton.  In 1970, Geoff became a staff engineer at Sound Ideas in NYC, then SoundMixers NYC, and later as an independent engineer. And In 1982. he opened his own studio, Nimbus Nine, which grew to four rooms, one API, one Neve, one Trident, and one ProTools. Since 1970, Geoff has designed and built more than 20 recording studios for music, film and commercial production. including the all analog “BIG Blue” in Katonah NY for the recording of Joan Osborne's premier album, “Relish” and Tuxedo Park for Cyndi Lauper's “Sisters of Avalon”. His most recent studio is the multi-million dollar music production facility in Saint Petersburg Florida, Big3 Entertainment. In 1993 Geoff started manufacturing his own line of audio equipment. The first product was a combination mic-pre/eq. This all-discrete Class “A” unit was based on the legendary Trident A Range circuits by Barry Porter. Next was the FET Compressor. In 2000, production began for full-size Class A recording consoles in frame sizes from 16 to 80 inputs.  Thanks so much to William Wittman for making our introduction! Red Rockers were all set to be the "American Clash." They may have started as the go-to punk band in their native New Orleans, but when they wrote the 1983 hit "China" for their second album, not only did their style change, but MTV played them incessantly, recognition soon followed, and original fans screamed "sell outs!" Unfortunately, the switch to a more commercial sound only led to moderate commercial success. Other than the still beautiful "China" they never quite got off the ground. When it ended, bassist Darren Hill didn't really find success again until he began playing with, and then managing, Paul Westerberg. From there, his roster of clients grew to include luminaries like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, New York Dolls, Dropkick Murphys, and the late Roky Erickson. Darren tells fascinating stories about all of these great people like what makes Paul tick, why was Roky special, working with former guest William Wittman on Red Rockers' final album Schizophrenic Circus (and why it has one of the worst covers ever), and the pop culture store he runs in Providence, RI. So many great stories here and you know we just scratched the surface. Enjoy!    http://www.emporiumofpopularculture.com/

William Wittman is another producer/engineer/mixer whose name may not sound familiar, but who no doubt has worked on scores of songs you know and love. His first major work was on Cyndi Lauper's monumental She's So Unusual. Included on those sessions were the guys from The Hooters, which lead to WW doing their breakthrough Nervous Night. The same team went on to help craft Joan Osborne's smash Relish. From there, the hits just kept coming with albums by The Outfield, The Fixx and Scandal. He's also worked artists like the A's, Graham Parker  Mick Jagger and Pat Benatar. In the 90s he played in his own band Too Much Joy, which also paved the way for him to continue as a professional musician. Today you can find him slapping the bass in Cyndi's band as well as serving as her musical director.  And finally, a young William once passed up an opportunity to hobnob with rock's ultimate royalty because he was so dedicated to finishing a job, well...that and...he really had to pee.

This week, we're back in New York City with William Wittman — a Grammy Award winning independent Producer & Engineer whose credits include the multi–platinum debuts from Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, the Hooters, and The Outfield. As a musician, he has appeared on nationally televised shows including The Late Show with David Letterman, the Rosie O’Donnell Show, CBS Late Late Show, Ellen Degeneres, the NBC Christmas Tree Lighting Special, and New Year’s Eve in Times Square. William has also played and sang with many of the artists he has recorded and was a member of alternative rock band Too Much Joy (Giant/Discovery/Sire Records). He now plays bass guitar in the Cyndi Lauper Band, recording and touring internationally while also working as the Musical Director.
