Effervescent club cuts from one of Southeast Asia's rising DJ stars. In Indonesia, the term santai (relaxed) is more than just an adjective—it's a lifestyle, one endearingly embodied by DITA. The Bandung-born, Bali-rooted DJ's breezy attitude to life is reflected in dreamy, blissful euphoria. DITA's RA Podcast is a window into both her disposition and sound, blending wiggly breakbeat into tweaking acid, Detroit house into Spanish electro, Balearic to '90s house and some grittier club fare, too. Her sets are rooted in a feel-good philosophy that allows her to freely play with energy and mood. Don't just take our word for it: DJ Harvey is a major fan and hand-picked DITA to be a resident at his new club Klymax, nestled within the world-renowned Potato Head Bali, where DITA is also Head of Music. With gigs at everywhere from Panorama Bar (the first Indonesian woman to play) to Rainbow Disco Club and Dekmantel under her belt, the world is now taking notice of DITA's killer groove. A breakout 2025 surely beckons. @dita-putri-widyanti @headstream Read more at ra.co/podcast/959

With just a few weeks of summer left, we have the perfect wine to ensure that you do not squander those last few precious days. Afterall, there are some wines that just scream summer, and Vinho Verde is at the top of the list. Hailing from Portugal, Vinho Verde is a light, crisp, easy drinking, crowd pleasing little spritzer. Yes, spritzer because it is often also effervescent. Vinho Verde is also pretty easy to find in your local store, and very reasonably priced! This episode is also the perfect example of how we love to create content that our listeners care about - and we are starting this series on Portuguese wines based on a recommendation from our faithful listeners! And Portuguese wines are worthy of their own set of episodes because, despite being a smallish country in terms of population, Portugal way out-punches its weight class in terms of wine production. If you are a wine fan and are looking to expand your wine knowledge, learning about Portuguese wines is a must. And we make it fun! Luke has a background in the beverage industry, having previously founded a kombucha brand in the UK. He is passionate about reducing CO2 emissions and single-use plastic packaging in the beverage industry.Summary:Luke Montgomery-Smith, co-founder of Plink, joins Adam Peek on the People of Packaging Podcast to discuss the journey of starting a business during the pandemic and the innovative packaging solutions they have developed for their effervescent tablets. Plink offers a sustainable alternative to traditional bottled drinks, with 99% less packaging and 98% fewer CO2 emissions. Luke shares the challenges they faced in finding packaging that met their sustainability goals and the importance of creating a differentiated brand experience. He also highlights the rise of reusable water bottles and the need for more free-access water points.Key Takeaways:* Plink offers effervescent tablets as a sustainable alternative to traditional bottled drinks, with 99% less packaging and 98% fewer CO2 emissions.* Effervescent tablets are highly volatile and require packaging with high barrier properties to water vapor and oxygen transmission.* Plink faced challenges in finding contract manufacturers willing to move away from plastic tubes, which are commonly used for effervescent tablets.* The packaging industry is still a few years away from finding non-plastic alternatives with the necessary barrier properties for effervescent tablets.* Plink's packaging is made of aluminum foil with a plastic liner, which is currently recyclable in Europe but not in the US.Quotes:* "It's a bath bomb you can drink. It's called Plink. It's radically low carbon because there's no water. It's sold by subscription." - Adam Peek* "Not all water tastes the same. Some water has different chlorine levels or different ways to make the water cleaner. But because water is quite a plain flavor, it doesn't take much to mask that." - Luke Montgomery-Smith* "We were trying to create a new beverage moment with an existing technology." - Luke Montgomery-Smith* "The packaging is an essential part of the product. It's about brand messaging and appeal." - Luke Montgomery-Smith This is a public episode. For two decades, Sébastien Tutenges has conducted research in bars, nightclubs, festivals, drug dens, nightlife resorts, and underground dance parties in a quest to answer a fundamental question: Why do people across cultures gather regularly to intoxicate themselves? Vivid and at times deeply personal, Intoxication: An Ethnography of Effervescent Revelry (Rutgers UP, 2022) offers new insights into a wide variety of intoxicating experiences, from the intimate feeling of connection among concertgoers to the adrenaline-fueled rush of a fight, to the thrill of jumping off a balcony into a swimming pool. Tutenges shows what it means and feels to move beyond the ordinary into altered states in which the transgressive, spectacular, and unexpected take place. He argues that the primary aim of group intoxication is the religious experience that Émile Durkheim calls collective effervescence, the essence of which is a sense of connecting with other people and being part of a larger whole. This experience is empowering and emboldening and may lead to crime and deviance, but it is at the same time vital to our humanity because it strengthens social bonds and solidarity. The book fills important gaps in Durkheim's social theory and contributes to current debates in micro-sociology as well as cultural criminology and cultural sociology. Here, for the first time, readers will discover a detailed account of collective effervescence in contemporary society that includes: an explanation of what collective effervescence is; a description of the conditions that generate collective effervescence; a typology of the varieties of collective effervescence; a discussion of how collective effervescence manifests in the realm of nightlife, politics, sports, and religion; and an analysis of how commercial forces amplify and capitalize on the universal human need for intoxication. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is a Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of The Social Construction of a Cultural Spectacle: Floatzilla (Lexington Books, 2023) and Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington Books, 2022). His general area of study is about the construction of identity and place. He is currently conducting research for his next project that looks at nightlife and the emotional labor that is performed by bouncers at bars and nightclubs. To learn more about Michael O. Together, they run riot through the streets of Cork city, trying to maintain a bohemian existence while the threat of the financial crash looms before them. When Rachel falls in love with her married professor, Dr. Fred Byrne, James helps her devise a reading at their local bookstore, with the goal that she might seduce him afterwards. This week's installment of Badass Records Podcast is Episode #51, and I'm pleased as punch to announce that my guest is the one, the only -- Eva Saviano.I know we touched on it in our conversation, but -- to be sure -- I wanted to peek in a few spots to make sure I had her professional title correct, and while I didn't find conviction within my search, I did find one of the best bios I've ever seen in my life, so I'll share how she has described her self and add a few details after:"Uncommonly frank and, frankly, uncommon. A sucker for the written word from a very young age, an owner of The Word Lover's Dictionary, a grammar and punctuation cowgirl, enthusiastic copy editor, bold copy writer, occasional blogger, careful proofreader, and all-around word nerd.I lead with a friendly attitude, a sense of humor, meticulous attention to detail, snappy style, and pen in hand. Effervescent. Ebullient. Energetic."I've known this gal for the better part of 20 years. I read that little passage, and all I have to say is, Can confirm. In addition, Eva is a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and a friend. She's a girlfriend, an empath, a tenderhearted loyalist, and the quickest dang wit this side of The Everglades. She's also someone you should yield to in rollerskating traffic, but that's a story for a different episode.I'm grateful that she took a chunk of an evening over her holiday visit to sit down with me and bullshit about life and music. It's possible that the list of her favorite music is endless, but we -- nevertheless -- talked about a few of her favorite records, and they are these:Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill (1995)Dilate (1996), Ani DiFrancoWeezer's Pinkerton (1996)When the Pawn Hits... (1999), Fiona AppleNeko Case's The Worse Things Get... (2013)There's a reason I keep doing these with next to no traction and very little merch' sales (Note: Swag for sale!), and it's because I love it. Putting something together like each of these 51 episodes is fun and challenging, and well -- ya' can't beat the company, really. This episode is my new favorite. Seriously. Such a hoot. Many a laugh. And just plain good conversation. So, I hope you'll check it out. Peace and love to you and yours. Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are clips I poached from a song called, "Right Down the Line," which comes from Gerry Rafferty's City by City (1978), c/o Parlophone Records, LTD. I can't tell you that City by City is a badass record because I've only listened to this track (about 467 times) and "Baker Street," but it is one of the badassest songs ever recorded.

If you wish your neighborhood brought more opportunities for delight and connection close to home, you will love our conversation with guest, Blaine Merker. His work with one of the most important Urban Design companies in the world is aiming at unique, inspiring “street cultures” in the future for us all. Blaine has some amazing stories of how our streets are being transformed from places for our cars, to places for people! If ever the future felt bright, this episode will fill you with a sense of possibility. Turns out, through most of the last century, cities have been designed, not for people, but for cars! Sounds depressingly obvious and also like awakening to a better way. And it is! I suspect most of us have never considered how much wasted space we have created in our world when it comes to 10 lanes of traffic, parking lots that go on for endless acres, and neighborhood streets choked cars? Think about cities like Chicago, where nothing but a sliver of the Lake Michigan shore is accessible to people because Lake Shore Drive, and its 10 lanes of traffic stand between the city and the water. O.N.E The Duo is a mother/daughter duo — Tekitha (mother) and Prana Supreme (daughter) — and their story is rooted in Hip-Hop royalty. Tekitha is the female lead on the Wu-Tang Clan albums, and Prana is the daughter of RZA, the founder and de facto leader of Wu-Tang Clan. Together they are pioneers, becoming the first artists to journey from Hip-Hop to Country. From a backdrop of diverse experience, influence, and their immersive Nashville journey, O.N.E The Duo has created a musical style that's all their own. “O.N.E” stands for Observant, Noetic, and Effervescent — there's intentionally no period after the "E" because effervescence goes on and on... onetheduo.comIG: @onetheduoSpotify: O.N.E The DuoNEW album Follow Your Heart: https://orcd.co/followyourheart Keep in touch with Michael online: https://michaelfranti.com The Stay Human podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts: https://stayhumanpodcast.com PODCAST EPISODE CREDITS:Executive Producers: Michael Franti and Activist Artists Management Producer: Angie Griffith for BPOSITIIVArtist Manager: Caitlin Stone for Activist Artists ManagementManagement Coordinator: Bryce Matthews for Activist Artists ManagementSocial Media Manager: Kaitlyn Parmenter for Alchemy Artist ServicesPresenting Sponsor: PactInstrumental from: “Crazy For You” by Michael Franti Editing by: Roger Gowdy for Page Turners Studio

Raised in a traditional Middle Eastern family, author and podcaster George Azar ("My Gay Church Days") knew that he was attracted to men even before puberty hit. But when his older brother came out in middle school and was summarily put into therapy, George receded even further into the closet. He became a Young Republican in order to gain his father's approval, and was subsequently drawn to Christianity, which promised a "remedy" for his homosexuality. George excelled so much in the way of the Church that he became a pastor, all the while being told - and believing - that his queerness was a gateway to (you guessed it!) pedophilia and bestiality. His journey towards self-acceptance included seeing a "conversion therapy specialist," and eventually doing his own deep dive on what the Bible *actually* says about homosexuality. Despite everything he's been through, George is absolutely EFFERVESCENT, and he shares his story with an incredible amount of grace and humor!Follow George everywhere at @mygaychurchdays, and check out https://www.mygaychurchdays.com/ for all the info on George's book, podcast, and more!
