For this episode, I welcome Bill Wooditch. After spending a year at a dead-end job with a foreclosed future, Bill Wooditch created his renowned “Always Forward” mindset and forged his way from the impoverished backwoods of western Pennsylvania to create a multi-million-dollar company, which he continues to lead today. As a professional speaker, Bill uses his experiences to inspire individuals to pursue personal development and professional success. He is the author of Always Forward and Fail More, a Wall Street Journal bestseller. The hard-won lessons he shares in his books and keynotes are designed to shorten the distance between where you are now and where you are determined to go in the future.   We open this episode with Bill sharing his background story. Bill grew up in western Pennsylvania, having to march to a certain drum all the time because his father was a Pennsylvania state policeman. Ironically, Bill was a rebel from a very young age and didn’t deal well with authority. His rebellious nature got him a job in a factory and while his friends went to school, he had to stay home and go to work. Bill shares how living this life, feeling like there is no future in front of him, scared him to death. This is when his parents decided to give him one more chance and send him to school.   Bill then talks about his experiences during his college years, and how the biggest lesson he learned was how to connect with people. Bill believes that college is still important today for the right industry, for engineers and scientists, but he doesn’t believe that it is the only way to become successful. This was a tough mind shift for him because he was a huge believer in college experience because it worked for him.    Together we then dive into discussing the good and the bad that Bill learned during his career that served him in moving forward. He explains how doing things the “corporate way” never came naturally to him, and he discovered the magic formula the hard way, by failing. He found that the true formula was to simply connect with people. Bill is a firm believer that putting people in a box and trying to make them conform to the “rules'' is not beneficial for anyone. His philosophy is that only a great leader can hire exceptional people and allow them to be great.   We also discussed what Bill’s company does and how he discovered his niche. He shares how his regional insurance brokerage firm The Wooditch Group is a holding company for a couple of companies that transact property and casualty insurance-related business. This platform allowed Bill to follow one of his other passions, which is public speaking. Eventually, all of this led to him writing his books, in which he poured his essence into, Always Forward and Fail More. Today, he doesn’t spend that much time on the corporate insurance side because he has an amazing team behind him, so he is able to focus on having high-end conversations with successful people.   Eventually, Bill explains the difference between large and small goals. According to Bill, it is important to have huge aspirations in life, but you have to have small goals in between because accomplishing those small goals will give you the boost that you need in order to keep moving forward and eventually accomplishing your large goals. Otherwise, you will just have a fantasy that will eventually disappoint you and set you back. Bill shares that the difference between inspiration and motivation is that motivation will go away after a while.   Lastly, we discuss the importance of first giving value. Bill believes that in order to differentiate yourself from the masses you have to think in terms of value. You need to keep in mind that the arbiter of the value is the client. This, as he called it, “servant mentality” attracted his customers and made him stand out. He built his entire business on giving value first.    Don’t miss this episode of the Just Start Real Estate Podcast with Bill Wooditch! This was an incredibly fun conversation, but it’s also filled with great value, important messages, and amazing lessons, so make sure you tune in! Notable Quotes:   “I was a rebel without a clue.” Bill Wooditch   “I hated the most important thing that we have to do to make success real and that is work.” Bill Wooditch   “We all need a little fear in our lives to be able to move forward, and I had a big dose of fear: doing the same things for 8 hours a day, with no future in front of me.” Bill Wooditch   “When I was growing up, there was no discussion - you are going to go to college, that's what you do, otherwise you're a loser, high school education is not enough. I just don't think it's the case anymore for a lot of folks.” Mike Simmons   “I found the magic formula the hard way, by failing. The magic formula was just to connect with people.” Bill Wooditch   “You are not going to win every heart, you are not going to influence every mind. Why don’t you just meet them as people? ” Bill Wooditch   “People who were born to communicate, people who were born to connect, born to have that really dynamic interaction with people, if you hide them away you're just weakening them. Like Superman with kryptonite.” Mike Simmons   “Great people will be great, you just have to get out of their way a little bit.” Mike Simmons   “It is not about controlling. It is about inspiring, cultivating, and working together as a team.” Bill Wooditch   “If you don't have a lot of activity in sales, you have nothing.” Bill Wooditch   “So many people are stymied and paralyzed by the anxiety of doing something wrong. Just do it.” Bill Wooditch   “It’s great to have huge aspirations, but you have to have mini-goals in between them.” Bill Wooditch   “The customer is king and it was always that way. We just kind of forgot about that royal throne.” Bill Wooditch   “You have to keep your soul.” Bill Wooditch   “People are not stupid, they can smell a liar.” Mike Simmons  Links: Bill’s Website Bill on LinkedIn Bill on Facebook Bill on Twitter Bill on Instagram Bill on YouTube Always Forward! The journey to 100 episodes has been more than an honor. I've interviewed amazing people from all walks of life and from all over the globe. I've had amazing podcasts, and some not so great ones (let's keep it real). This episode is special. It's dedicated to everyone who's taken time out of their lives to listen to my podcast, be a part of my journey, or share their lives and perspectives with me on my podcast.  I'm truly fortunate to have been able to have my siblings and mother join me for this podcast episode. Without them, I would not be where I am today. My younger sisters journey as a black woman thriving through grad school, then moving to another part of the country on her own as a phenomenal black woman is one I was very excited to share. We also dive into what's it like growing up with an expat as a sibling and the impact it has on family.    100 episodes in, and so many more to go. Always Forward. I love it when ideas come together. I keep a list of what I believe. I collect principles and hard-fought lessons. One of those beliefs is “Love the Plateau.” I got the idea from George Leonard. His little book on Mastery is a treasure. It's about the work, the practice. Growth comes in surprise burst surrounded by long stretches of seemingly flat gains. The flat periods are needed to build the base for growth. You must love the plateau to reach mastery. I stumbled upon the lesson again but in a very different context. I teach at a Jesuit university, and they offered us a chance to make a spiritual exercise with some guidance from a priest. The priest sends us a short video with some hints, lessons, and ideas on how best to approach the exercises. He cautioned against the temptation to measure progress. He said progress is a temptation. If I focus on progress, I'll be disappointed or at least focused on the wrong thing. The exercises are about an adventure to get to know God. The exercises are not about progression through the book. How similar to “love the plateau”? The key is to never give up, to keep going. Progress can be a weight too great to carry. I can feel like I'm not far enough along, or it's hopeless because I have so far to go. I remember my 5thgraders listening to my 8th grader play violin, and they sighed because she was so good. They forgot she was worse than them when she was in 5thgrade. The key was daily practice, not progress. I believe this is why diets are so hard to follow, and New Year's resolutions are nearly worthless. We are all about the progress. We forget the path. Stay on the path and keep going. I recently heard a saint's moto was Siempre Adelante, meaning Always Forward. I love it. Change dieting to one meal, one decision. Change New Year's resolutions to a new path, ignore progress, and always forward. I get to add “progress is a temptation” to my list of beliefs. And I get to use it every day while I'm on the 100 Day Challenge. What's good! We are back here on Agent Talk and today I have a few touching points. This past weekend I took some time away from the computer, from my phone, from the world in a sense to allow myself a period of refresh and to hone in to what God has been saying. Life as a whole can be overwhelming, so to be able to sit back, quiet the outside world, and be still for a few days was FRUITFUL. I believe that being able to clear some space periodically for God to speak to you without the noise of the world is something that has been invaluable for me, no doubt. With that said, it's Monday. It's a new week with new opportunities, new obstacles, new greatness! The last few weeks have been HEAVY and my encouragement to anybody listening is to do everything in YOUR power on an individual level to tap in today to the great works that lie ahead of you. For me, one of those things that I know has been laid out my path is the Always Forward Foundation. My mom has always raised me to believe that those who have succeeded in any sort of manner are called to lend a helping hand to those that follow. 3 Invaluable Lessons from Alex Barthet It's extremely important to hire a lawyer that specializes in construction law. Have your "Core 4" and build relationships with them so you see the trends in the industry. You are going to need a lawyer on your team at some point, so find one now, and get to know them. You won't regret it.   This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with Alex Barthet, Principal at the Barthet Firm. He joins us to share his universal legal expertise.  Join us as we dive into his journey into law through engineering and how to pick the right construction lawyer.   Alex’s Journey to Becoming a Legal Expert (02:11) Starting in Mechanical Engineering with an interest in construction and designing cars, but got near the end, and abruptly changed directions and went to work full time at his father's law firm and went to law school while working.   Mistakes We Make When Picking The Right Lawyer (05:05) Hiring a lawyer based on who you know or price, and not specialty. Not hiring someone that is board certified in their specialty. Not finding someone that fits into the team.   How to Select the Best Attorney for a Specific Issue (07:46) Find someone that's a specialist in the field. Search for the good and the bad on Google, and read reviews. Ask who specifically would be working on your project, and meet them.   Managing Expectations (10:27) Cost: make sure everyone is upfront with cost expectations. Develop small interim budgets to manage any surprises. The legal system takes lots of time – be patient with the process.   Examples of the Good and the Bad (15:31) Clients that think they can beat the odds, typically have worse results than those who work with an experienced lawyer. A client that hired a lawyer that was a solo practitioner that did a little bit of everything. The lawyer did not have specialist experience in construction and the client lost $350,000. Most successful clients create their own dream team with a Construction Lawyer, a Construction Insurance Company, a Bonding Agent and a Construction CPA – the "Core 4."  Clients should socialize (i.e., lunch or drinks) to keep their ear to the ground.   Alex’s “Magic Juice” for Being a Great Leader (22:17) Listening to a variety of great podcasts. Learning from the "best of the best." Being Humble and Showing Gratitude to your team.   All About Alex’s Podcast: “The Lien Zone” (24:44) Started by using videos that we created. 4,500 Listeners per month Quick bullet points on a variety of legal issues. Often, the mundane things tend to cause the most trouble.   The Very Best Advice Alex Has Ever Gotten (27:14) Always Forward. It doesn't have to be the best, but make sure there is incremental progress.   Resources for Listeners The Lien Zone Podcast with Alex Barthet Alex’s Recommendations: “The Labor Illusion: How Operational Transparency Increases Perceived Value”   Contact Alex Contact Alex by Email Contact Alex on LinkedIn The Lien Zone on Instagram   Alex’s Parting Advice (37:57) If you have a lawyer that you know, like, and trust, invite him/her out to lunch. Get to know them better.  If you don't have a lawyer, find one, and put that person on your team. You will need them at some point.   Please subscribe to Construction Dream Team for the latest episodes on our website, iTunes or Stitcher! We would LOVE a 5-star rating to help us show up in the search engines so more of Construction Nation can listen to industry leaders and experts on their computers, phones, or tablets!   Remember…Construction Dream Team drops every Monday morning at 4 am PST. Please join us next week when Sue will interview another industry leader or expert so you can learn how to create your Construction Dream Team!

He works with Fortune 500 companies like AIG, Old Republic, Zurich, and Bank of America to improve their sales and leadership. He appeared regularly on Steve Harvey’s “Act like a Success” show and has also appeared on CNBC, Fox, and CBS. He has written for Inc., New York Daily News, and the American Management Association. I am absolutely thrilled to be speaking with Bill Wooditch on the What’s Next! Podcast!  THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to succeed and learn how to use their indispensable failures to get there faster!  TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE…..It’s the serious student of success that treats failure as the indispensable teacher. Unless you’re able to first move through the pains of rejection and the fear of the attempt, you will not be able to move forward to create the lifestyle you dream of. The key here is to be dispassionate about failure and check your irrational fears and it is important to check your ego and the fear of losing prestige, because this too can paralyze your progress. Bill shares some wisdom and some strategy for addressing fear, failure, and the pursuit of success!  WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… It’s a pleasure to have someone on the What’s Next! Podcast who talks about this fear of failure and having the courage and fortitude to lean into the kind of discomfort that leads to success!    Running time: 32:21   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani on social: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn   Find Bill on social:  Twitter  Instagram  LinkedIn    Bill’s Website:  Official Website    Bill’s Books:  Fail More  Always Forward
