You strode up to this field, through lush meadow, for a better view over Arley station. And now you're here. It's a perfect Shropshire August day. Blue sky. Light breezes. Hot sun on your back. Nearly time you think looking up into the sky, far right, for any sign of smoke. The whole station's in view from up here. Here beneath the tall whispering trees, and basking grass crickets. There's the empty waiting tracks, lined by high overgrown hedgerows. And a man down there. Hammer. Nails. Fence beside the gravelled track, being sporadically mended. Such a country scene. With such balmy country sounds. Benevolent. Timeless. There, watched by the circling buzzard. Chased away by rooks. And when it first came from over the horizon, it announced its imminent arrival with a blast on the whistle. Mile wide, its sound waves travelled. Through the cutting it then proceeded. To emerge like a resplendent surprise from under the old stone bridge. A heavily rolling, clanking, iron mass of hissing pressure, that gently squealed to a halt in the waiting station. As it waited for its passengers to board, it pressed against its wood block brakes, radiating heat. And a slowly building, smouldering hiss. And the whole valley seemed to brace itself for what it knew was about to come. The bridge and the sloping fields. The trees. The road. The buildings and even the sky. All braced themselves, to be turned inside out. Turned into a steam train dream. A steam locomotive, to give it it's proper title, does not so much depart a station, as leave it in its wake. Its iron furnace contains such pressure, that when its valves expose its pistons to pump the girders that turn the giant wheels, it's not just the air that's kneaded like a dough, but the whole world around it. It's a palpable sense of power that so surpasses anything you can have imagined, that all you can do is grin. Whilst fixed to the spot. In enchanted admiration. * We took this sound photograph of a steam train passing through Arley station last month. We recorded in high definition sound. After the train left, we left the box recording alone, to take in the soft rural wind in the trees, the crickets in the grass, the man mending the trackside fence, and all the other sounds of ordinary everyday life going on in this Shropshire valley.

2023.06.10 – 0891 – Studio Embarrassment EmbarrassmentAs a voice-over, you have perfected a cast of characters while alone in your home studio and then you get your big break: a director wants you for a big-budget part! You sit in the big-city studio, the microphone facing the control room and through the glass you see directors and producers, engineers and executives, script-writers and sales managers, assistants and interns… they're talking but you can't hear them… and you feel like a goldfish in a bowl. It's understandable that embarrassment means you struggle to find the thunderous voice of Thor for an interactive game, ‘Silly Billy the Steam Train' for the kids' cartoon, or that of the wicked witch for the theme park animatronics, that you had produced at home… alone. He's another example of embarrassment, rather than nerves.Terry (not his real name) had bad teeth, they were stained from years of drinking coffee on overnight radio shifts, (and red wine at weekends). He also had rather more fillings than he'd have liked, the result of too many sweets and chocolates to help him ‘power-through' the night. Terry was self-conscious of his physical looks and so was careful about opening his mouth when he spoke so he didn't show his yellowing teeth, flecked with silver amalgam. And that caused him to mumble, and trip over his words. An easily-solved physical issue (teeth whitening and tooth-coloured fillings), would mean he'd be more confident in opening his mouth when he spoke and develop a richer, clearer voice. "As the steam locomotive approached at 145 bpm, fulled by burning combustible materials to heat water to the point it becomes gaseous, the conductor and crew sounded the whistle as a long-distance warning. I processed the original “Steam Train Ride” field-recording using a pedal made in Knoxville TN called the Microcosm, delaying the whistle to closer resemble the sound of an impending death. I constructed my sounds speedily to escape being hit by the approaching train, creating the work in just under 5 hours." Composition by Brandon Locher. I also talk about toilet twinning, the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, and Howarth's 1940s weekend. With plenty to talk about, I still find time to digress to talk about Michael Portillo's career, with the excuse that someone did message me about his TV shows. I end with some personal updates; job going well, flat hunting continuing. Sadly, I do have news regarding my friend's 17 year old cat, Alfred Chocolate Yumyum. Don't forget to subscribe to the show, and get in touch if you have anything to share, suggest or say! Transcript of Podcast **Please note Transcriptions are Automatically Generated so may not be perfect 0:00 Hello it is Friday the third of December This is episode 29 and welcome back to the podcast 0:18 Hello hello hello and good morning good afternoon and good evening to wherever and whenever you are. Welcome back to the show we should hear and it is great to see or to have all of your ears for the next 10 or 15 minutes or so. If you're new here welcome if you been here before, welcome back and you may or may not know what this podcast is all about. It is trying to share with you all the trips we take in some great parts of the UK that you can visit and you may have heard of and you want to know a bit more about or perhaps places that you've never even heard of that sound interesting to you. I seem to be getting my tongue in a twist today so bear with me but we are going to crack on or what I'm doing for the rest of 2021 as our travellers kind of slow down a little bit and things are happening at weekends and Christmas is coming and all sorts of things like that we may not be getting to some places that we want to go to but that will that will change but we have been to a lot of places the podcast was down for a few months and I'm just catching up on our previous travels that we've done through the year. You may have caught last week's show when we visited Marwell zoo and Activity Centre The Isle of Wight and lonely safari park well today I am going to briefly take you to a falconry display on a steam train in Swanage. Some fun that we had in Weymouth. We also went camping to Bewley motorhome museum where the caravan and motorhome club did a pop up campsite and we also went to concierge camping and depending on how long I ramble on for, we may save a couple of these for next week's podcast because there is only a couple of things I have to talk about next week. So we may defer one of those but let's see how we get on. So we've recently been to Chichester was our wedding anniversary last week and we celebrated our 10 year anniversary in a beautiful town or city is it I'm not sure of Chichester, there's a cathedral there. So it could be a city where there what there was there is some nice bars and coffee shops and a couple of restaurants we went to there for two nights we were Max free. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in last week's podcast. But I will cover that in more detail perhaps over the next week or two. So let me just crack on with a quick catch up of where we've been in the summer of 2021. So we started off this, this show if you like with a trip to X Ray Now X ray Gardens, which you're going to hear about again soon in a couple of weeks. Because we did I also went to a Halloween event now because really cool. There's a video over on my YouTube channel about that day it was really good fun. But this time we went there when we're friends of X ray members, which means we get to go we pay an annual fee and we can go as many times as we want while it's open and closed for a couple of months in a winter. But it's great there's a steam train there the if your friends have expiry members, you can go
The Ceres Rail Company's iconic steam train has resumed its travels between Cape Town and Elgin after being halted since March last year, at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, the steam train had been operating every weekend, taking people on somewhat of a journey back in time on a steam locomotive from Cape Town into the Elgin valley. The steam train is back in action after 20 months, departing from Dockrail Road in Cape Town, all the way to the Elgin Railway Market. The trip takes about four hours, making its way up the winding mountainside along Sir Lowry's Pass before heading into Grabouw and the valley below. The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) announced Friday (Oct. 15) the well-received Summer Formosa steam train rides will take place on Oct. 30, Nov. 13, and Nov. 27, all on Saturdays. The excursions will feature an express powered by locomotive DT668, dubbed the “king of steam locomotives.” Train buffs are invited to explore the beauty of east Taiwan taking the rail service, running from Yuli in Hualien all the way to Taitung. It will stop at Fuli, a Hualien township known for its premium rice, and scenic spots tucked away in the country's fields and mountains, according to the TRA. The NT$1,500 (US$54) ticket per trip comes with a limited-edition set of DT668 locomotive towels, launched to coincide with the quintuple stimulus voucher scheme. Tickets for the shuttle trains at the departure and terminal stations can also be booked. Tickets for the cruise-style rail travel excursions will be available from 10 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 20). In this episode, you will be able to experience the sound of an actual steam train journey from the late 1930s to early 1940s — first hand — as if you are actually there. This is possible by collecting vintage 1930s and 1940s field recordings of actual steam train sounds and mixing them with other vintage period recordings — all to give you a historically authentic sound experience of a real 1930s era journey by steam train. For the most immersive experience, I highly encourage you to listen to this with headphones. If you close your eyes you can imagine yourself really there.

Experiences You Should Have Podcast Show Notes: Interview with Mary Stange on Taking a Train Through the Scottish Highlands with her Family Mary Stange from Bambinos Without Borders blog shared one of her favorite experiences on Experiences You Should Have Podcast, which was seeing Scotland by train in the Scottish Highlands with her 2-year-old son and husband. This particular train trip was only 2 hours from start to finish and it was a magical experience. Scotland has always been a bucket list place for Mary, and she got to see this magical place even with a toddler! The landscape was completely magical, green, mountainous, with rivers and cliffs. Everywhere you turned, it felt like a storybook and every detail felt like it was living and breathing. It was so captivating. The spirit of Scotland was breathed in the rich landscape and this was very magical place for Mary. Scotland has always been described as majestic Scotland, and now she knows why. Traveling to Scotland with a Toddler Mary's family train trip through the Scottish highlands was about 2 hours start to finish and it included lunch! They took the Strathspey Railway for their adventure. They started in Aviemore, then went to Boat of Garten, then to Broomhill and then back to Aviemore. This Scotland steam train tour through the highlands is definitely a family-friendly trip. Mary's son was on the train as a 2-year-old and still talks about it 2 years later. He remembers the engine, watching the engineer shoveling coal into the firebox, and he remembers the experience of being on a train and climbing inside of it. I mean, a train trip is a 2-year-old's dream come true, and can also same the same for almost any age. The 2-hour steam train trip was perfect for having a toddler on board, but if Mary and her family return to Scotland, they'd like to do a longer steam train trip. Seeing Scotland by train should definitely be on your list because it takes you back to a very historic time and you can see the impact they had on the industrial revolution and you can go anywhere in Scotland and find a steam train to take you back to the romantic nature of railway travel. Cost of a Traditional Sunday Luncheon Scotland Train Tour The cost of this particular Scottish highlands steam train lunch trip (lunch included) was 43 pounds per adult and 21.50 per child. The food on the train was very nice. They tried to put a fancy Sunday luncheon. They served tomato soup, roasted veggies, smoked salmon, potatoes, puddings, desserts, meat, coffee, and tea. They also served haggis, a Scottish dish that is composed of minced sheep and other organs. If Haggis is your thing, check out this haggis recipe that got some pretty good reviews on The Spruce Eats! If you want to see the full Sunday lunch menu for the Strathspey Railway, you can view the menu online here. Best Time to go to Scotland: Mary and her family went in September, but it did rain a lot. The rain was more like a pacific northwest drizzle, not enough The best months to visit are actually May and June. What Types of Clothes Should You Pack for a Trip to Scotland? Raincoat Layers - you never know when the sun will come out What other Toddler / Family Friendly Things You Should Do While You're in Scotland? Definitely check out some distilleries. Turns out you can bring kids to many different distilleries, check out Mary’s blog post on Bambino's Without Borders on kid-friendly Scotland distilleries. If you have kids, you should definitely check out the playground at the Ballindalloch Castle. When you vacation with kids, many times you are sightseeing between playgrounds. They are so many hidden towns, islands, and small places in Scotland and The Isle of Skye is on Mary’s list to check out next time. On this week's episode of the Unnatural Selection Podcast we discuss: Adam's steam train adventure. Labor retains their seats in Super Saturday. Lets be partisan about it. Fairfax to be absorbed by Channel 9. Only great things are going to happen. Putin's gift of a soccer ball to Trump. Donald Trump's Hollywood star destroyed with a pick axe. Peter Thiel and the Gawker Media saga. Did Russia do it? Jeff Sessions is totally fine with locking up Hillary. Rod Rosenstein gets articles of impeachment filed. Penalty rate cuts create devastating political headlines. The Unnatural Selection podcast is produced by Jorge Tsipos, Adam Direen and Tom Heath. Harry Frost was the engineer on the last steam train to pull into Brattleboro. Here's the story...
Songs for a New World is not a typical piece of American musical theatre. There is no book or “story”, per se, with a standard beginning, middle and end. There are no characters to follow from Act I to Act II. There are no lavish production numbers and set and costuming are minimal. “Songs…” is exactly what it says it is – a collection of stories told through song. They are by composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Honeymoon in Vegas) and were apparently written over several years for several different projects while he performed in New York City nightclubs and piano bars. Brown has linked the 16 songs in the piece by the barest of threads. As Brown himself says, “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.” It’s about the choices we all make in life. The production is a labor of love for producer Lucas Sherman, best known to the local theatre community for his work as musical director and pianist on numerous projects for a variety of companies. Sherman retains that role in this production as well as taking the reins of stage direction and performer. Joining Mr. Sherman for vocal duty are Robert Finney, Daniela Innocenti-Beem and Kat Ray. Mr. Sherman also retains piano-playing duty and is joined by Abe Newman on bass, Quinten Cohen on drums, and Erica Bergeron on percussion. The songs are written and performed in a variety of styles ranging from pop and rock to gospel and jazz. Half are solos, the rest are duets or ensemble numbers. Some are comedic, some are dramatic, some are inspiring, some are downbeat. Regardless of tone or design, they all have the feel of musical theatre, so much so that you almost wish there were entire shows written around some of them. For such a variety of style and themes, a versatile cast is required and Sherman provides one (including himself.) While experience does tell, each performer is given his or her own moment to shine. For Finney, it’s telling the story of a youth overcoming the hardships in life and pressing on in “The Steam Train.” Kat Ray’s moment came with “Just One Step” the darkly comedic tale of a woman’s futile attempt to get the attention of her husband from the ledge of their high-rise apartment building. Sherman acquits himself quite nicely with his earnest delivery of “She Cries”. Dani Beem, clearly the most experienced performer and most comfortable in a musical revue-type show, showed her versatility with her regret-filled woman looking back at what money couldn’t buy in “Stars and the Moon” and as a frustrated Mrs. Claus in the show-stopping “Surabaya Santa”. Beem also nicely duets with Sherman in “I’d Give It All for You”, a song about lovers reuniting after realizing they can’t be apart. The aforementioned musicians provide these performers with excellent accompaniment which is no small feat due to the variety of styles at play. Being it’s really more of a staged concert than a full-fledged musical production and it’s staged in the Spreckels’ small Condiotti space, errors or missed notes would not be easily masked. No such concerns with these talented musicians. The musicians were just as much a pleasure to listen to as the singers. Songs for A New World is a difficult show to review as it is actually 16 different shows in one. Rather than subject you to 16 mini reviews I’ll just say that, like in most shows, some songs hit better than others – both in form and delivery – but that collectively it’s a very appealing night of song and theatre. Because of its unfamiliarity, it’s the type of show that demands an audience’s attention. As with any good storytelling, there are rewards to be had from careful listening. You may not know the songs, but you’ll be glad you heard them. Songs… can be heard Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons through May 7. For more information, go to spreckelsonline.com

Do it! I'm not saying you should join me on one of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. I'm not saying you should join another tour group. But travel. Go. Right now. Mark Twain wrote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." Traveling will change your life for the better forever. Stop waiting for the "right moment". Start planning now. If you enjoy my music, then join me on a Celtic Invasion of another Celtic country. Rocks of Rodel by Kiss The Mistress Kiss The Mistress was formed 18 months ago and in that time has moved from folk club floor spots to main act bookings. Their debut CD About Time, released on the 20th March 2009 is already receiving rave reviews and their CD launch at the famous Cambridge Folk Club a fantastic night, attended and enjoyed greatly by an appreciative audience who had traveled from across the Eastern region to attend. Beltane: Its History and Modern Celebration by Rowan Moonstone You'll find the original article for this question and answer session on Sacred Texts. Banks of Newfoundland by Bote Bote is a group of 4, sometimes 5, musicians who are striving to bring the maritime sea shanty scene to the southern USA where it is relatively unheard of. We play anything from original numbers about the ocean, love, heartache, or just plain good times, to the traditional folk tunes of the Celtic nations that focus primarily on the salt sea. We have a set list of over 30 songs we play live and selected the best 15 songs for our first album. Whether you're a Celtic music fan or not there is still something for your ears in Work and Worry. Whether it's the funky acoustic pop "All Day Long" or the Bob Dyaln-esque "Whiskey in the Jar", to the harder rocking "Drunken Sailor" or "Star of the County Down", there is more than just irish pub music to be heard here. You can find out more about Bote on their Contributor Page. Ivor and the White Adder by Andy Guthrie We are incredibly privileged to have Andy as a Contributor to the show. He tells stories that are alive in his family today and that have come down through the ages. He says: The old Legends are a passion and a Joy, and the writings of Fiona Macleod are inspiration, in all I do. I have been a Head gardener of 31 years for large house, and sill working, I see the years come and go from spring to winner, and love it all. I retell the old stories. You can read more about Andy on his Myspace page or on our Contributor Page. The Celtic World Revisited by Cindy Spear This poem was inspired by the journey of the Celts. Of course, the place for me of greatest interest is Ireland where many Celts landed. I have included a photo I took in N. Ireland of a very mystical place where there were circles of stones and other interesting rock formations. Published in The New Brunswick Reader July 1, ’95. Read on CBC Radio with Iona’s "The Search" January 9, ’96. Copyright - ’95 - Cindy Spear To find out more about Cindy Spear go to her website or visit her Contributor Page. Lovern from 'The Fox' by Arlene Radasky The Fox is a historical novel that contains adventure, ancient Celtic beliefs, sacrifice, love of family, ancient and modern culture, and divorce. Have you ever wondered who your ancestors were? How did they live? How did they die? Most of us do. Genealogy is a huge business. Curiosity about our bloodlines, our past, makes us want to go back as far as possible. But, genealogy can only go back as far as there are written records. What if you had a chance to find a connection to ancient roots? To someone who lived two thousand years ago? Proof you could touch and hold in your hand Aine Macrea has that chance. She is the archaeologist who is on the search for a vision. Jahna has come to her and lead her to discoveries. In The Fox, you will follow the lives of Jahna and Lovern, two people who lived in what is now Scotland, during the time of the invading Romans. The Romans threatened Jahna and Lovern, their clan and most importantly, the life of their child. They struggled to find a way to stop the coming invasion and in doing so, left traces of their lives. Aine is working to rebuild her career and is led by instinct, or a vision (or is it a ghost?) to a hilltop in Scotland. Follow their stories in her podcast novel The Fox, you can also buy this book at Amazon. Find out more about Arlene on her Contributor Page. Jack in the Green by Todd Alan For me in this life, music is something I have learned to do. I have such strong feelings about the earth and our environment that I am using one thing I know to help spread the word about our need to re-balance our connection to our planet earth. My hope is that hearing this music might inspire some people to become more active in healing ourselves and our planet. Earth Changes was years in the making. I have been singing about for our Mother Earth since the mid- eighties. After a decade of touring and performing, I have spent most of my last 10 years building and helping form a nature-based landed intentional community on 620 acres in Southern Ohio called Wisteria. Here, I have connected deeper to my family and the land. In the last few years as the consciousness about global warming has risen, I felt inspired to create music again. Recently, I finished my new CD entitled Earth Changes. I mainly want this music to inspire people. I am giving away songs (free downloads) and CDs to help raise awareness. I am hoping that this music will help spread the word about the dangers of Global Warming and the need to protect our precious planet. To find out more about Todd Alan go to his website or visit his Contributor Page. Listener Feedback Liz, Dave, Paulette We are lucky to have received all audio feedback for this episode. Green and Grey by Damh the Bard Damh is a modern-day Bard whose spirituality, and love of folk tradition, is expressed through his music, storytelling and poetry. Drawing on the Bardic traditions his performances are both entertaining and educational, weaving a tapestry of myth, peace, and anthems that speak directly to the heart, but never without a good splash of humour. You can find Damh's music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD here. Promo - Form Letter Rejection Theater Paulette Jaxton Form Letter Rejection Theatre, with Paulette Jaxton, is described as a monthly audio anthology of previously unpublished short speculative fiction. The show has four episodes available now and Gary's favourite story is Divine Fire - which is a work of fantasy. In it a young woman must choose between the expedient path she has chosen for her own survival and a more dangerous one she has long since left behind. Promo - The Geek Witch Podcast Tahlea Moonwater The Geek Witch Podcast Tahlea Moonwater is a 21 year old Wiccan who has identified as Pagan for 9-10 years, and been actively studying and practising Wicca for 5-6 years. Tahlea identifies her personal path as “Solitary Eclectic Wicca”. She indulges in the study of Wicca and Witchcraft, as well as other Occult topics. (I brani musicali in sottofondo sono "Steam Train", "Aunt Louise", "Soon Enough", "Old Man Rocking Chair" e "Talkin Back", di John Williams, e sono distribuiti sotto licenze Creative Commons)
Quindicesima puntata.
