As economic hardships continue to carve their mark deeper into the lives of Americans, university enrollment is declining. Richard Whitehead discusses the benefits that education has for the rising generation of youth and how Southern Virginia University has been able to battle economic hardships by providing scholarships to 90% of their students. Most universities pack students into classrooms to reduce education costs, however Southern Virginia University is taking a different approach referred to as "the genius of small." December 30, 2011 Dickson Buxton responds to the poor unemployment rate that is currently present in America. Over his career he has managed billions in private equity capital in companies that have created over tens of thousands of jobs. About the Guest Dickson Buxton is Senior Managing Director of Private Capital Corporation. In 1976, Dickson Buxton co-founded Private Capital Corporation, and shortly thereafter, made a decision that would broaden his horizons. He decided to serve on an early ESOP company board with Lou Kelso, creator of the ESOP concept. The two hit it off and in 1978 PCC acquired the Kelso Company. Also in 1978, Dick realized a milestone by co-founding the ESOP Association of America. Later, PCC sold the Kelso subsidiary to better focus on other capabilities — perpetuation strategies, exit strategies and planning for private companies. In 1987 he co-founded MBR Investment Associates, another private equity group. In addition to numerous articles in professional journals, Dick has written two books: "You've Built a Successful Business: Now What? A Guide to Perpetuating Your Business" and "Lessons in Leadership & Life, Secrets of Eleven Wise Men."

All of the technology that has been implemented in the last 30 years in terms f computer storage, processing and bandwidth has made starting a business very easy. Within a short window of time a website can be built advertising products and services and instantly you have access to millions of customers. Apps for smart phones are creating the way we live our lives- Think for a second if there were a billion people walking around with these devices in their pockets. If a $1 app is made and sold to just a small percentage of the owners- 20 million dollars can easily be made over night. Even though Venture firms can be found all over the world the bulk of the activity can still be found in Silicon Valley due to the unique environment that nurtures the industry. Some of the best educational institutions such as Stanford and Berkley can be found there. Many PhD's are employed doing research funded by large sums of money provided by the department of defense. These technologies are then implemented in companies such as HP and Cisco. About the Guest: Prior to founding Storm Ventures in October 2000, Sanjay Subhedar was at E-TEK Dynamics, Inc. As the traditional markets continue to leave investors with an unsettling feeling of uncertainty, secondary markets seem to be the big buzz in Silicon Valley. Secondary Markets are looking more attractive because they are a more limited market, fewer shares have been issued vs. after a company's IPO. And generally speaking buyers feel that the prices will dramatically appreciate after the company IPO. With all this activity on this new market front, you may think that the SEC would become concerned and enact regulatory laws. Private company transactions and private company securities actually have the same laws as public companies as far as insider trading goes- the however the SEC currently isn't regulating private companies do to a lack of infrastructure. As private company trading increases most likely we'll begin to see an increase in regulation from the SEC due to the fact that the return on investment for the secondary markets are looking promising. December 3, 2011 - Alan Olsen and Nadine Camara discuss new technologies in Healthcare as well as the effects of the new Healthcare law with D.O. of Heartland Women's Healthcare, Scott Joyner. Summary: Today's technological revolution is revolutionizing many industries. What was thought impossible five years ago is now a reality. Yet with all the advances that we have been experiencing, are the costs reasonable? Where is the balance between state of the art and what wallets can really afford? Each year procedures take less time to complete and the recovery times decrease while billing exponentially increases. As a resort to this health care cost delivery crisis the federal government has adopted a universal health care system. Does this really solve the problem though? What doctor in their right mind in the past would deny a patient treatment in a critical situation just because they won't pay? The new system of health care provides everyone with health care- but is it the treatment and coverage what we think it will be? We don't understand the mess that we've gotten ourselves into. About the Guest: Dr. Scott Joyner, D.O. received his medical degree from the University of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Joyner has served as Instructor for Physician Assistant Candidates in The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Irwin Army Community Hospital, and as Assistant Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bassett Army Community Hospital.

No one is immune to hacking- including systems not connected to the internet. No matter how much budget to pour into cyber security, its only a matter of time until your company is hacked. This is a principle that we've seen emerging in recent years. How should companies respond when they are under attack? How can they mitigate the damage and protect their most sensitive information? Ray Rothrock is a veteran in the cyber industry and emphasizes in his new book, Digital Resilience, that it's not enough for a company to have heavy barriers of defense- the hackers will still get inside, what companies need to focus on today is resilience.
