Today on Uncommon Sense, we're talking about “law enforcement” and why so many people no longer feel like laws are actually being enforced equally or consistently, especially when it comes to powerful and well-connected individuals connected to the Epstein scandal. We discuss the growing public frustration surrounding the unreleased and heavily redacted Epstein files, the lack of visible accountability for elite predators, and why so many Americans feel the justice system has failed women, children, and vulnerable people. We also talk about why local police departments, sheriffs, prosecutors, and public officials should be demanding full transparency and supporting the release of the complete unredacted Epstein files so the public can see the truth plainly. This episode also goes into the broader leadership crisis facing America and much of the world: weak leadership, fear of confrontation, and silence in the face of corruption. We discuss the need for stronger moral leadership, stronger families, stronger communities, and men willing to stand up publicly against evil instead of shrinking back from difficult conversations. If laws are not enforced equally, trust in institutions collapses. If justice is selective, people stop believing justice exists at all. It's time for courage, accountability, truth, and leadership again.--https://www.youversion.com/bible-app
Happy Mother's Day to all of the incredible mothers out there. Today's episode is a deeper conversation about the urgent need for stronger, more biblical men and women in our culture, people willing to stand for truth, protect the vulnerable, and refuse to stay silent in the face of evil.We discuss the ongoing outrage surrounding the Epstein files, the lack of accountability for powerful people, and the broader cultural failure to protect victims from wicked and predatory individuals. But this conversation goes beyond headlines. It's about morality, courage, justice, faith, and what happens when societies stop valuing strong families, strong character, and biblical principles. This episode is ultimately about hope too, because evil does not win forever. Real justice matters, truth matters, and good people still have a responsibility to speak up.

Diana Lane is the Director of Sustainable Food and Water at the Colorado Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, and Aaron Derwingson is the Water Projects Director for the Nature Conservancy's Colorado River Program. Both Diana and Aaron work at the intersection of water sustainability, thriving rivers, resilient agriculture, and strong communities– harnessing TNC's relationships and resources to advance some of the most cutting-edge and effective conservation initiatives in the American West. - Diana and Aaron bring a diverse set of skills and experiences to their work at TNC. Diana holds a PhD in Biological Sciences and has spent much of her career working with a wide array of partners on restoration ecology and planning, climate adaptation, and management of public funding. Aaron is a river guide-turned-conservationist who began his career focusing on conservation in the Rio Grande River basin, and now applies his skills toward creating pragmatic, solution-oriented approaches to freshwater challenges in the greater Colorado River basin. But perhaps most importantly, they both bring a deep level of passion and focus to their work– their optimistic commitment to solving some of the West's most pressing water and agricultural challenges is infectious. - Diana, Aaron, and I connected virtually and had an educational and inspiring conversation about water, agriculture, and community here in Colorado and beyond. We discussed some of the most urgent water-related challenges and opportunities and how they are working with a wide range of stakeholders to find mutually beneficial solutions. We discuss the Yampa River fund, their work helping agricultural producers adjust to a drier climate, and the all-important role of building solid relationships with stakeholders. We discussed the Maybell Irrigation Ditch Project, which is a fascinating, win-win project for both producers and recreational river users, and we discussed some of the water-related challenges that keep both Diana and Aaron up and night. And as usual, they both have plenty of excellent book recommendations. - A huge thank you to Diana and Aaron for taking the time to talk with me, and thank you for listening. Try breathwork free: https://www.brendawinkle.com/breathe In this podcast episode, Brenda Winkle and Lucas Root discuss their experiences and challenges when leaving their corporate careers. They share personal stories and insights on boundaries, freedom, and pursuing their passions. They also discuss the importance of empowering women, achieving gender parity, and building strong communities. Lucas introduces the concept of the six elements of community: language, purpose, projects, and value. They touch on the financial burden of raising children and the loneliness epidemic. They also explore the use of technology in their creative processes and the importance of understanding and utilizing these tools. Here are the takeaways... Leaving corporate careers to pursue fulfilling work feels like freedom You are selling all the time whether you realize it or not. Consider the ways you "sell" your loved ones on things. In Lucas' example, he mentioned selling your kids on not running in the street. If you have a fear of sales, realizing the ways you are already selling can be supportive. A study by McKinsey revealed that only 5% of C-Suite executives are women. If this could change, and we achieved gender parity, it would infuse the global economy with $28 (updated) Trillion based on the stats provided by that study linked here. Elements of community: Language - Inside stories, the way we shake hands, our words, the ways we dress Purpose - Security is often the primary purpose of community but our communities can focus on much more granular issues. The more granular, the better. Projects - A time-bound activity with a deliverable at the end. Examples Lucas provided included meeting friends for coffee on a Saturday morning. It has to be planned and has to be in pursuit of the purpose and have a deliverable. Value - Shared value: the value you receive and the value you contribute. That could be hugs and friendly faces. It could also considered an energy exchange rather than a direct reciprocity. Social Contract - the rules we choose to live by while we are in community Heart (no exact word in English) - the sharing and receiving of care and pride as it pertains to the work you do with and for the community It's no secret that raising children comes with a financial burden. Building community to help you raise your children is way to create the village of "it takes a village". There is a loneliness epidemic. Human connection is critically important. Invitation to consider how you can create a community with the people around you. Can you ask for help? Can you offer help? Lucas said, love your neighbors and you never know what will happen. Use technology to enhance creative processes. We also talked about the potential risks and benefits of AI. Chat GPT is essentially a calculator predicting outcomes for words. The most important thing to do is to use it, try it or risk being left behind. You can easily enhance creativity by playing with children and finding ways to have fun. Ways to access joy and reprogram oneself for a positive mindset About Lucas Root Lucas Root is a technologist, community builder, and leadership coach with a passion for using technology to improve the world. As a leading expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to transform society, Lucas is dedicated to leveraging technology to build stronger, more inclusive communities. SWAT Raid On Cop City Bail Fund Organizers Criticized By Activists The Atlanta Solidarity Fund, a nonprofit that offers bail and legal support to activists, has seen three of its board members arrested on charges of "money laundering" and "charity fraud," according to reporting by The Intercept and others. The arrests were carried out by the Atlanta Police Department SWAT and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The fund, part of the registered nonprofit Network for Strong Communities, also provides grants for anti-repression work in Atlanta. This incident marks the first time bail funds and legal support groups, traditionally important in social justice movements, have been targeted in this manner. The impact of these arrests on the operation of the fund and the larger legal ramifications for similar organizations remain uncertain, but the arrests, which involved armored vehicles and a helicopter, were seen as an attempt at intimidation by activists. Hello everyone! America is a melting pot. Always has been and hopefully, always will be. Even so, immigrant education hasn't shared the spotlight with other issues, yet it is at the foundation of the charge of public education. Laws, court cases, advocates, and critics abound on this issue, but the issue should be taken to to heart and understood by every educator. Last week, Jessica Lander spoke to us about her book, Making Americans, but more importantly, setting the ground work for understanding the nuance and beauty around the project of public education in America. This week, she is talking about what it takes, and why we should put in the effort, to build strong communities with the families we serve. Jessica Lander teaches history and civics to recent immigrant students in an urban Massachusetts public high school and has won several teaching awards, including being named a Top 50 Finalist for the Global Teacher Prize in 2021, presented by the Varkey Foundation and being named a 2023 MA Teacher of the Year Finalist, presented by the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Previously she has taught students in middle school, high school, and university in the U.S., Thailand, and Cambodia. She is author of Making Americans, a comprehensive look at immigrant education as told through key historical moments and court decisions, current experiments to improve immigrant education, and profiles of immigrant youth and schools across the country.
