Staying at the Table When We Disagree | Terri Hord Owens

What does it mean to stay at the table when disagreement, division, and distrust seem to be everywhere? In this episode, talks with Rev. Terri Hord Owens, General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), about her book Staying at the Table: Being the Church We Say We Are. Drawing on her experience as a denominational leader, pastor, and former corporate executive, Hord Owens reflects on the spiritual practices, theological commitments, and communal habits needed to sustain Christian unity in a polarized age. The conversation explores why staying at the table is both difficult and necessary, how churches can balance accountability with radical welcome, and why biblical literacy and spiritual formation remain essential for Christian witness. Hord Owens argues that churches often become more committed to preserving institutions than embodying the gospel, and she challenges Christians to recover a deeper commitment to love, humility, and community. They also discuss denominational identity, the future of small churches, the role of data in understanding ministry realities, and how congregations can create space for people who are searching for a faith community after leaving more rigid religious environments. Together they explore: What it means to "stay at the table" amid disagreement When unity is possible—and when leaving may be necessary Why spiritual practices and biblical literacy matter The tension between loving institutions and loving the gospel Welcoming people who are deconstructing or leaving other traditions Small churches, bivocational ministry, and denominational realities Rev. Teresa “Terri” Hord Owens is the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. She is the first person of color and second woman to lead the denomination, and the first woman of African descent to lead a mainline denomination. Elected in 2017, Rev. Hord Owens was re-elected to a second term as General Minister and President in 2023. Her ministry actively reflects the Disciples' priority of being an anti-racist church, being a movement for wholeness, welcoming all to the Lord's table as God has welcomed us. Her exhortation to the church is “Let's be the church we say we are. It is in being who we say we are that we actively bear witness to God's limitless love for all.” Rev. Hord Owens earned her bachelor's degree from Harvard University and her MDiv from the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she subsequently served as Dean of Students for 12 years. Rev. Hord Owens' resume includes more than 20 years of leadership in corporate America leading diverse teams in data management. She serves on the National Council of Churches as the Vice Chair of the Governing Board and is a member of the World Council of Churches Central Committee. Rev. Hord Owens is married to Walter Owens, Jr. They are the proud parents of an adult son, W. Mitchell Owens, III and daughter-in-law Adriana Owens. She is also the joyful grandmother of Zachary Owens. In this episode of The Healing + Human Potential Podcast, I sit down with Dr. Richard Davidson, a Harvard-trained psychologist + meditation researcher, to explore the science of meditation, neuroplasticity + what it really means to flourish. Richard shares why meditation isn't about stopping your thoughts, how even small daily practices can create measurable change + why flourishing is a skill we can cultivate through awareness, connection, insight + purpose. We also explore what long-term meditators reveal about the brain, how emotions can move through us without becoming who we are + the fascinating research around Tibetan monks, death + consciousness. If you've ever felt like your mind is too busy to meditate, or wondered whether meditation is actually working, this episode offers a grounded, science-backed path back to presence. ====   Guest Bio: Davidson received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University in 1976. His research is broadly focused on the neural bases of emotion, emotional style, and methods to promote human flourishing, including meditation and related contemplative practices. He has published over 600 papers, numerous chapters and reviews, and has edited more than 20 books. Davidson released his newest book, Born to Flourish, with Cortland Dahl in March 2026. Together, they bring neuroscience and contemplative science to the exploration of well-being and meaning amid the growing challenges of modern life. The book focuses on small, evidence-based practices while also examining the broader societal conditions shaping attention, emotion, and human connection.  Davidson is also the author, with Sharon Begley, of The Emotional Life of Your Brain (2012), and co-author, with Daniel Goleman, of Altered Traits (2017). Geoengineering is defined as some emerging technologies that could manipulate the environment and partially offset some of the impacts of climate change. Seems like the perfect solution for a consumerist society that lives on instant gratification and can't stop polluting even at the risk of our futures, right? Well, let's slow down. Today we'll discuss the dangers of geoengineering and the ethics of the fact that these new technologies are being tested on Indigenous lands. For Earth Day, we bring back a special environmental episode from our archives!  As we head into an ever warming world, some experts and politicians are embracing a possible solution to climate change called geoengineering. Theoretically geoengineering could slow down climate change, stop it, and maybe even remove carbon from the air. It sounds like the perfect answer for a global political system that just can't stop burning fossil fuels even if it kills us all. But it might not be the easy fix we're hoping for. We talk to scientists and activists about what geoengineering is and why it could actually be a dangerous way to tackle climate change. We also dive into the moral and ethical questions of testing geoengineering technology on Indigenous lands. This episode first aired in 2023. These include restructuring central office roles following a freeze on hiring by Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis. The changes aim to streamline operations and realign staffing, reducing central office positions through attrition and consolidation. New appointments include Joshua Heath as the first executive director for accountability, Mark Vance as principal of Creekview High School, and Kim Moody as principal of R.M. Moore Elementary School STEM Academy. Additionally, new roles such as director for leadership and operations and coordinator of student support have been created to enhance district operations and support functions. STORY 2: New Cell Phone and Dress Code Rules Coming to Cherokee Schools The Cherokee County School District has approved significant updates to its dress code and cell phone policies, effective August 1. The revisions, endorsed unanimously by the Board of Education, aim to standardize dress code guidelines across all schools and regulate cell phone use more strictly. The new dress code prohibits attire depicting vulgarity, promotes consistency in clothing length, and mandates coverage of certain body areas. Students are allowed to carry cell phones but must keep them silenced and out of sight during school hours, with specific usage rules varying by grade level. Discipline for violations will escalate based on circumstances, emphasizing correctional measures and principal discretion. The changes reflect community input and aim to reduce student stress while enhancing academic focus. Full details can be accessed on the district's website. STORY 3: Canton Rotary Honors Fallen Bailiff 100 Years Later The Rotary Club of Canton and local law enforcement paid tribute to Cherokee County Bailiff Charles Fernando “Charlie” Loggins, who was killed in the line of duty in 1921. His name was added posthumously to the Public Safety Memorial at Canton Rotary Park, honoring his sacrifice during Georgia's prohibition era while apprehending whiskey smugglers. The ceremony featured solemn remembrance, including the national anthem, color guard presentation, and remarks by community leaders. Cherokee County Sheriff Frank Reynolds presented Loggins' descendants with honors and unveiled the memorial's new addition, commemorating fallen public safety officers. The event also included scholarships for public safety personnel and a donation to support the family of the late Erin Mason, recognized for her service and tragically lost with her family in a recent accident. This effort, supported by a $450,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, aims to enhance road safety across Cherokee County, including Canton, Woodstock, Holly Springs, and Ball Ground. The project, managed by Pond and Company, involves gathering public input through a survey open until August. Residents are encouraged to identify safety concerns such as intersections, road conditions, and pedestrian safety. The initiative aligns with USDOT's goal of eliminating roadway deaths through improved road designs, speed limits, and post-crash care strategies. She also talks about the importance of data gathering and analysis in understanding the state of the denomination. Hord Owens also highlights the importance of theological diversity, staying together at the table, and the need for moral and theological grounding in political engagement. Unleash Your Leadership Superpowers Bishop Warner H. Brown is a retired bishop of The United Methodist Church, serving from 2000 to 2016.  He is currently serving as an interim bishop of the Sierra Leone Episcopal Area in the West Africa Central Conference.

From 2014 to 2016, Bishop Brown was the President of the Council of Bishops.
------------------------

Bishop Brown was born and raised as an only child in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Ida and Warner Brown. At the age of thirteen, while reading the New Testament, he felt a call to serve. He began preaching as a youth and was encouraged to continue doing so. As a young adult, he attended the University of Maryland, (B.A. in Sociology, 1969.) He also graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC with a Master of Divinity degree.

In 1973 Warner was ordained deacon in the Baltimore Annual Conference by Bishop James K. Mathews. Yet his movement west had already begun with a pastoral appointment in the Western Pennsylvania Annual Conference as both the pastor of a church and Director of Bethany House Ministries in Pittsburgh, a social service ministry for two housing projects. While serving in western Pennsylvania, he was ordained elder in 1975 by Bishop Roy C. Nichols. In 1979, he answered a national search for an associate conference staff position in the California-Nevada Conference and transferred there. Once in California, it was only six months later that he was asked to serve as Conference Council Director.

From this role of program and administrative oversight for the Conference, Warner was appointed just four years later to the Superintendency of the Golden Gate District, the richly diverse area including San Francisco and several rural and suburban counties along the Pacific Coast. Four years after that, he was given the charge of the Taylor Memorial UMC in Oakland, CA. While serving this significant congregation, the community was then assaulted by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and two years later the holocaust of fires in the Oakland hills. As chairperson of the Oakland Inter-religious Network for responding to this disaster, Warner led the community's ecumenical disaster response.

Throughout these years, Warner has been active in the social justice ministries and programs of those communities and church connections where he has been appointed. To list but a sampling: Volunteer Police Chaplain, Trustee of the Glide Foundation, vice-chair of the Community Advisory Commission for Alameda County Medical Center, member of the Governing Board of United Way for Kern County, a member of the. Board of Directors for the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Leadership and Service Award for Emergency Response Ministries, given by UMCOR, and recipient of a 1998 Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswoman Barbara Lee.

Warner's leadership in the church has included service as a delegate to General Conference twice, member of the General Commission on Religion and Race, a faculty member for New DS/CCD training, Harry Hoosier Member of and twice the host for the National Black Methodists for Church Renewal, chair of the Board of Missions in California-Nevada Annual Conference as well as numerous other conference boards and agencies, adjunct consultant to the Alban Institute, and a Wesley Seminary Distinguished Alumni.

Following a successful eleven-year pastorate in Oakland, Warner was given a new challenge as Senior Pastor of the predominantly white yet multi-ethnic First UMC of Bakersfield, CA. Only two years into this pastorate, he was nominated and endorsed by his conference for the episcopacy: at the Western Jurisdiction Conference Sessions in Casper, Wyoming, and in July of 2000 he was elected to the episcopacy on the 19th ballot and assigned to the Denver Area. He retired in July 2016.

This week, Brett had the privilege of sharing some time with Tampa and Florida legend – Governor Bob Martinez. He was Tampa's 54th mayor and Florida's 40th governor; both positions held as the first of Spanish descent. He also has deep roots in Tampa, his grandparents having immigrated from Spain at the turn of the 20th Century during a great boom in the cigar industry there. His father worked in the restaurant business, including as a long-time employee at the famed Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City, and then later at the family-owned Café Sevilla in West Tampa. Martinez was a star athlete at Jefferson High School, a graduate of the University of Tampa, and got his professional start as a classroom teacher before becoming the Executive Director of the Hillsborough County Classroom Teachers Association. He was called upon by Governor Ruben Askew to serve on the Governing Board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and chair three Basin Boards there: The Hillsborough River, Northwest Hillsborough, and Alafia River. They discuss his childhood in Old Tampa where he enjoyed school, excelled at sports, and spent his free moments fishing with his father and his friends; how Café Sevilla became the birthplace of a mayor's race and the campaign to be Governor of Florida; how his service as head of the teachers union gave him his first taste of real politics; his time at Swiftmud gave him a taste for the water and environmental needs of a region; and a mayorship that gave him the opportunity to restore, innovate, and move his home city forward. His term as governor would be marked by enacting some of the most consequential environmental policy in Florida history including the enactment of the Preservation 2000 conservation land acquisition program, the Growth Management Act, and the Surface Water Improvement and Management Act. He also implemented the Florida Lottery, created Florida's Turnpike Authority, and created Space Port Florida. There are a few other achievements in particular that hold a more personal value to Brett including Martinez's restoration of the Lowry Park Zoo from the ground up as mayor; the creation of Florida Prepaid College; the rebirth of Nature's Classroom in Hillsborough County; an amazing nearly 70-year (and counting) partnership with his beloved wife Mary Jane; and of course, his analysis of why the Tampa Cuban sandwich is superior to the one from Miami (it's the bread). He's still as active as ever, serving on many boards and clubs, is a Senior Policy Advisor with the Holland & Knight Law Firm, and at 89 years-old, you can still find him on his daily walks or on the tennis court. We hope you enjoy the conversation!
