Are you still on the fence about taking the leap and pushing your henna business to the next level? In this episode of Hennapreneur, Anndell Wubben, Hennapreneur PRO Graduate and owner of Henna Harvest, talks with host Chelsea Stevenson about her experience with Hennapreneur and the incredible impact it has had on her business growth. Anndell jumped right away at the opportunity to work with Chelsea and was very excited to get started. She shares that one of the hardest things for her to do was to just be patient and follow the process, but says it was worth it in the long run. Anndell attributes much of her business growth to her brick and mortar, which was not easy to get as she wanted a very specific location downtown. By putting your dreams out into the universe and then consistently putting in the work to make them happen, you will prove to yourself that you are much more capable than you thought. It is scary to take a leap of faith and make an investment in yourself. But if you never take that leap, you will never know what you could have accomplished. We are so much more capable than we give ourselves credit for. If you want to be working smarter, not harder, and achieve your dream of earning a full time income through your henna, it is time to commit to your dream and take that first step. Quotes • “My mentality at the time was, if you speak it out, it will come back to you. It may take time, but it will come back to you.” (23:45-23:54 | Anndell) • “I'm doing something I love and I'm bringing information to the community, and I'm getting to introduce my passion to more people, and I'm finding people who are passionate about the same thing that I'm passionate about. And it's all because of the gateway that is my brick and mortar.” (28:36-28:52 | Anndell) • “When you're done setting up something, it's not concrete. It's never concrete. It's going to constantly be changing and evolving, and you have to be okay with that.” (45:36-45:48 | Anndell) Links Connect with Anndell Wubben: Website: https://www.hennaharvest.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennaharvest Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HennaHarvest/ Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Are you curious about Chelsea's 6 Figure Framework and how it could work for your henna business? This framework has helped Chelsea and her students create successful six-figure henna businesses and made it possible for them to form the life they've always dreamed of. In this episode of Hennapreneur, host Chelsea Stevenson shares each step of her 6 Figure Framework. The 6 Figure Framework can help you to design the most effective business plan to match the lifestyle you wish to have. Chelsea does not work full time hours at her henna business in order to achieve a six figure income and you do not have to either. The framework is broken down into 3 main sections which are mastery, strategy, and execution. Each of these sections is then further broken down into actionable steps. For example, under the mastery branch, Chelsea explains that a successful henna artist must be an expert at natural henna and be able to develop a signature art style. Achieving a six figure income with your henna business may feel like a far off dream, but it absolutely can be your reality if you are ready to follow Chelsea's 6 Figure Framework. By setting yourself apart from other henna artists with super authentic and strategic brand positioning, you can stand out and have your individual art style make a name for itself. Learn more about each step of the 6 Figure Framework so that you can begin improving your henna business today. Quotes • “Mastery is essentially in a nutshell the fact that in order to be successful you need to master your craft so that you can serve your clients with confidence and excellence.” (10:28-10:38 | Chelsea) • “You need to be the henna artists, not a henna artist. You need to be the henna artists. What does that look like? That looks like you showing up and having a super strategic, super clear, super authentic brand positioning that conveys to your marketplace that you are the best choice for your ideal client.” (19:46-20:11 | Chelsea) • “Sustainability is what allows for you not only to enjoy the business that you're running while you're running it, but also to enjoy the life that you're building when you're outside of work and you get to breathe, exhale, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.” (23:49-24:04 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Do you struggle with making investments in your business? It can be difficult to know when and where to invest, how much to pay yourself, and how to price your services. Most people do not have the proper financial education to make smart money decisions. If you find yourself having a poor relationship with money and finding money management difficult, Chelsea can help you to understand where you should invest for the most benefit to your business. Sometimes you need to be willing to invest money to make money. If you're struggling with the decision to spend $20 a month on something that will ultimately enhance your clients' experience with your business, you are missing out on growth opportunities. Some of the main issues getting in the way of people making smart investment decisions for their business are having a poor relationship with money, mismanaging their money, and being too shortsighted to plan for future goals. Money earned through your business should not be treated the same way as your personal finances, but people often do not have the background knowledge of business finance prior to opening a henna business. Learning to trust yourself to make smart investment decisions that can set you up for your future goals is pivotal to becoming a successful hennapreneur. While it can be daunting to invest money, especially when you are first starting out, it is important to take that first step and really invest in yourself and your business. When you have more skin in the game, you are much more likely to be fully dedicated to your own success and your business will be better for it. Quotes • “Poor relationships with money can manifest in a number of ways, but I've noticed it most commonly manifests itself as a symptom of another issue, actually. And that is a lack of self-trust.” (9:07-9:20 | Chelsea) • “It probably is downright scary to put that type of money on the table. The good news is that once we've begun working together, you and I will actually build and nurture self trust and mindset with coaching, making it easier for you to be able to make choices that support your goals in the future.” (12:08-12:25 | Chelsea) • “It's one thing to make money, but if you don't know how to manage it, it will just slip through your fingers.” (16:18-16:24 | Chelsea) • “Business finances are not the same as personal finances. We need to understand that and all of the revenue that comes into your business is not yours to play with.” (16:33-16:41 | Chelsea) • “If you're not thinking about what your business could be, and you're only focused on what your business is today, you will consistently miss out.” (24:06-24:13 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Are you relying on word of mouth as a business marketing strategy? It's understandable, especially when you're early on in your business, that you'd be excited by people talking about you and your art. However, word of mouth is a passive strategy that is difficult to track and which can actually impact your business in a negative way rather than a positive one. In this episode of Hennapreneur, host Chelsea Stevenson talks about why word of mouth just is not enough as your main marketing strategy. Word of mouth is great for filling in the gaps after your primary marketing strategy has taken off, but it should not be the main way you are attracting clients. If you are not already making and maintaining a solid monthly revenue, it is best to avoid word of mouth as a strategy. People tend to be drawn to others who are similar to them. If you have a client who is not well-aligned with your business and they start recommending you to others, it is highly likely that those referrals will be poorly aligned as well. Additionally, when it comes to reviews, people tend to write and talk about negative experiences more often than positive ones. So it is quite possible that word of mouth will actually harm your business more than it helps it. When you're early into your business and excitedly handing out business cards, stop and think for a moment what type of clients you want to attract. Be very intentional about your marketing strategy and use word of mouth only to fill in the gaps. Do not rely on word of mouth alone, because it is too passive of a tactic. It is impossible to track word of mouth and ensure that the types of people being drawn to your business are actually good clients. Quotes • “It isn't enough to sustain nor to scale your business for you to depend on word of mouth, especially if you are early on in your business.” (4:04-4:13 | Chelsea) • “While on one hand, I am 100%, saying, I do not advocate for you depending on word of mouth as a marketing strategy for your business to grow your business, I will also tell you that word of mouth as it relates to poor reviews of your business matters a lot.” (5:08-5:23 | Chelsea) • “Word of mouth has a presence, but it's more likely that word of mouth will impact your business in a negative way than it will in a positive way.” (7:09-7:20 | Chelsea) • “If your word of mouth was initiated by a poorly aligned client, then you can anticipate that more poorly aligned clients are going to eventually come and knock at your door.” (11:51-12:00 | Chelsea) • “If you aren't already generating solid revenue on a consistent monthly basis, then word of mouth is not the marketing strategy for you.” (16:30-16:38 | Chelsea) • “Let's be strategic. We don't want to be passive in our businesses.” (21:53-21:56 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Are you a henna artist that prefers to focus on your passion for the art instead of spending time worrying about finances? It's great to be passionate about your art, but it is just as important, if not more important, to remember that you are also running a business. In this episode of Hennapreneur, host Chelsea Stevenson talks about why your money goals matter and how to feel more comfortable handling the numbers. As a henna artist, you deserve to be compensated fairly for your work and talent, and it is completely possible to use your art to gain financial independence. When you get really clear on your financial goals while being cognizant of your energetic capacity, you can actually reverse engineer your marketing and operational strategies to lead you directly to those goals. Looking at the numbers does not have to be intimidating. Instead, view money as pure data. This data will help you to align your actions within your business with your goals. Even though henna is an artistic pursuit, it is still a business and should be treated like one. Your money goals are important for determining exactly what steps you need to take within your business to be fulfilled and successful. By shifting your mindset about money, you can begin aligning your marketing plan with your short and long term goals. Quotes • “Our art has an inherent value, and artists deserve to be compensated appropriately for their contributions to the world.” (6:19-6:28 | Chelsea) • “While it's okay for you to feel called to the art alone, if you're going to step into the business world, then you have to treat your business like a business. And that includes looking at numbers.” (6:43-6:55 | Chelsea) • “Having clear financial goals and having a realistic expectation regarding your own energetic capacity actually is what allows for you to reverse engineer your marketing and your operational strategies that would lead you to your preferred milestones faster and with more ease.” (8:03-8:23 | Chelsea) • “One of the things that I teach my students is how to treat their money as pure data. This is data that tells you about this business that you're building, what's working, what's not working, and how you can make adjustments. And what's beautiful about looking at it as data is that you also are very empowered to make switches, changes, adjustments in your business in real time based on the data that you're collecting.” (18:56-19:20 | Chelsea) • “When you have solid financial goals then you can align the actions that you take inside of your business to reach that milestone, to reach that goal post. And in doing that, that feels incredibly empowering as a business owner, because you have a guiding light as you're making your decisions.” (23:52-24:10 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Have you been undervaluing your work? Many henna artists are doing themselves a disservice by pricing their work at rates far below their worth. In this episode of Hennapreneur, host Chelsea Stevenson talks about how to best value your work and what to consider when creating your rates. Artists will always view their work as flawed. However, the quality of your work should not be solely what your rates are based on. You have to own your own inherent value and the things that make the experience of working with you unique for your clients. You are not just providing a design. It is important to think about what you offer your clients that they could not get from a different artist. It may be that you provide a safe space for people to feel seen and understood, and how can you put a dollar amount on that? When your clients really feel connected with you, they will overlook any flaws in your art and choose to work with you based on that connection. By focusing only on the quality of your art, you are forgetting all the wonderful things that really make clients want to work with you. Do not box yourself in. If you undervalue your work and don't charge what you are worth, you will be unable to grow your business. Instead, consider what makes working with you a unique experience for your clients and base your rates on that value. Quotes • “While on the outside, things might look really pretty, successful, busy and all the things that you're hoping for your own henna business, you never know what's happening behind the scenes. And I'm here to let you know that there are many people who are very talented and are totally unsatisfied, also, with what's going on inside of their own henna operation.” (5:32-5:55 | Chelsea) • “The curse of the artist is that we will always find flaws in our work. And if we use this as the basis of determining our rates, thus determining our earning capacity, right? Welcome to the glass ceiling that we've created for ourselves. When we do this, we actually box ourselves in.” (8:59-9:19 | Chelsea) • “Your experiences make you unique. What about those experiences add value to the space that you share with your clients?” (14:01-14:09 | Chelsea) • “When you own your value, you quickly realize that your rates are inclusive of well beyond the designs themselves.” (15:15-15:25 | Chelsea) • “Friends, if you are valuing or assessing your rates based on your art alone, you are missing the boat. Not only are you missing the boat financially, in terms of the way that your bank account is impacted, but you are also missing the boat in terms of how much more you could show up and do for your people.” (23:31-23:58 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Whether you are new to Hennapreneur or have been a part of the community from the beginning, it is important to understand the vision behind Hennapreneur to fully see how it can help you to achieve your business goals. In this episode of Hennapreneur, host Chelsea Stevenson takes a look back at how Hennapreneur got started and the vision that has been propelling the dream forward all along. Chelsea started her business in 2011 and went full time in 2014. She realized there was a need in the market for Hennapreneur because henna artists are typically grossly underpaid and the majority of henna artists never reach financial freedom through their art. She decided to create programs that would help henna artists thrive not only financially, but also in their personal lives with more time freed up for themselves to devote to their families, relationships, and other commitments. With Hennapreneur, Chelsea works to create a route around the systemic inequities that typically hold women back in the Western world. Through her help, her clients are able to generate full-time income from part time work and receive the compensation they deserve for their artistic talents. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur for a conversation with host Chelsea Stevenson about the vision behind Hennapreneur. Learn more about why Chelsea decided to create her business and the legacy it is helping to create by providing an outlet for women to support other women. Quotes • “All of the programs that I've created here at Hennapreneur are designed to help you to make more money without having to totally ignore the things that are actually important to you. Things like your family, things like your commitments, things like your relationships, things like your personal time, et cetera. I don't want you to have to sacrifice your life and your sanity in the process of growing that business.” (5:50-6:12 | Chelsea) • “I don't need to be the mechanism that keeps my business moving. I want my clients to be able to find me, to book me, and to come and reach me to get services done very easily, very independently. I don't want to have to handhold.” (8:09-8:21 | Chelsea) • “The impact that we make on our communities speaks to the legacy that we're building. Not only as individuals, but the legacy that we're building for our family, and the legacy that we're building in terms of being cultural change makers.” (28:19-28:31 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) In this episode of Hennapreneur, host Chelsea Stevenson is joined by two professional henna artists, Shawna Junior and Kate Blaubach to talk about their experiences early on in their careers and where their businesses are now. Before going into the henna business, Shawna worked as a flight attendant, but she wanted a more flexible career. Kate's full time career in healthcare also kept her busy. She realized she could be putting the same effort into her own business. Both Shawna and Kate share that the keys to success were having a solid customer service foundation, finding the hennapreneur community, utilizing Chelsea's accelerator class, being consistent, and believing in themselves. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur for a conversation with host Chelsea Stevenson and special guests Shawna Junior and Kate Blaubach. Listen in as they share their individual journeys to becoming henna professionals and what they've been able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time. Quotes • “My whole plan was that Henna is just something for me to do until I go back to work. And then, when I was practicing, I felt like I was getting really good at it and I was liking it. And then the thought of me replacing my income with it started teasing me.” (11:37-11:51 | Shawna) • “When I put in that hard work, and I put in that good work, I instantly see results. And so I just need to buckle down on being consistent. And I know, then my results will be consistent.” (42:04-42:18 | Kate) Links The Accelerator: https://www.hennapreneur.com/accelerator/ Southern Henna: Website: https://www.southernhenna.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/southernhenna/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/southernhenna/ Henna North: Website: https://www.hennanorth.com/, Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennanorth Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennanorth Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Do you know what it takes to be a successful Hennapreneur student? If you're looking to accomplish more in a faster time frame than the industry standard, it helps to have a certain set of personality traits. When observing her students, Chelsea has found that many of her most successful students, the ones that get the farthest in the least amount of time, share 5 common traits. Chelsea finds that her most successful Hennapreneur students don't delay in taking action and begin working with her after only a few days of finding her work. When students resonate with the Hennapreneur messaging, they want to jump in right away. Another trait of a successful student is being flexible and open to advice. In order to learn, it is vital to be able to take criticism and advice without taking it personally. The next observed trait is that successful students do not seek out excuses as to why they cannot do something. Instead, they are empowered in their decision making. Are you struggling with burnout because you are trying to do too much by yourself for your henna business? One of the biggest reasons entrepreneurs end up with burnout is because they refuse to bring on help and try to juggle too many tasks on their own. Hennapreneurs are generally artists first and business owners second. If you are realizing that certain parts of running your business do not bring you joy, finding ways to automate or outsource them can save you in the long run. The first tip for avoiding burnout is to put everything that needs to get done on your calendar. Schedule time that is set aside for doing the back-end tasks necessary for running your business and plan around social time, family time, and anything else that you want to work around. Then take a look at what tasks you are doing that you really don't enjoy, such as bookkeeping or rolling cones. Find a way to outsource or automate that task, whether that means using a software program or hiring someone to help you. The task might not get done exactly the way you would have done it, but it will still get done and that is ultimately what matters. Allow yourself grace and be patient with yourself as you get new systems set up and you will find that your business will run more smoothly than ever before. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn more about how to avoid burnout when doing back end business tasks and how automation and outsourcing can help you run your business more efficiently. Quotes • “When I sit down to do my quarterly planning, I look at my calendar and I put in time that's going to allow for me to do the things that are necessary for my business to run through multiple lenses.” (5:28-5:41 | Chelsea) • “Another tip that I have for you is to outsource or automate as much as you can.” (13:45-13:51 | Chelsea) • “When you open yourself up to receiving help, you allow yourself more capacity.” (18:12-18:19 | Chelsea) • “If you can outsource the things, outsource the things.” (19:25-19:28 | Chelsea) • “Automations and templates are also wonderful ways for you to avoid burnout with the back end tasks in your business.” (24:07-24:15 | Chelsea) • “It may be slow at first to get these things in order to get the back end of your business and its operations in order, it may feel slow. But once those things are done, it will allow for your business to run more smoothly. And when that business is running smoothly, the results are fast.” (30:09-30:29 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Are you stuck in a place where you feel unable to earn enough money with your art? Do you feel like you can't raise your rates? If so, you're missing out on opportunities and self-sabotaging your business. Chelsea explains that one of the major issues in so many entrepreneurial industries is that people undervalue themselves and price themselves into the bottom tier. Stop doing this, because there is abundance at the top waiting for you to seek it. Many hennapreneurs are under the mistaken impression that their services need to be “affordable”. However, when you have a quality product, you need to charge accordingly so that you can make a respectable, living wage. By offering your services at a premium, you will attract clients who actually value you and value your art, rather than clients who only care about money. Plenty of people are very willing to invest in a high quality product. When you price yourself at the bottom, people who actually do care about quality art will discredit you immediately, because a professional would not charge so low. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn more about why by keeping your rates low, you are standing in the way of your own success. Quotes • “There are people inside of the market right now who are looking to book henna artists and because your prices are so low, they are immediately discrediting you. Because an expert doesn't charge pennies on the dollar, a professional charges a respectable rate.” (6:32-6:46 Chelsea) • “I don't want you to be quote unquote affordable. What I want you to be is premium. What I want you to be is making a living wage that's respectable, and one that's going to allow you to actually take care of yourself, your family and the things that are most important to you.” (8:13-8:29 | Chelsea) • “We don't need to be begging our customers to buy from us.” (10:40-10:42 | Chelsea) • “When we're constantly feeling like we have to do something, we have to push, we have to build, we have to hustle, all we do is lead ourselves to burn out.” (13:08-13:15 | Chelsea) • “When we have a client base that is purely motivated by money and not by value, they do not value you.” (15:28-15:36 | Chelsea) • “This sort of thinking is what keeps us under-earning. This sort of thinking is exactly what keeps us stuck and small. This sort of thinking is what keeps us at the bottom of the industry and let me tell you lots of people are down there.” (25:19-25:33 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Repeating a mantra to yourself every day can help you push forward when going through a period of growth or change in your henna business. When Chelsea began making major changes to her business in 2018, she encountered criticism from friends, other entrepreneurs, and clients who didn't understand her vision. Ultimately, adopting these three mantras helped Chelsea stay on track and be more patient and understanding with herself. The first mantra is, “stop asking blind people to proofread your vision.” People do not know or understand your big picture and their criticism might discourage you. The second mantra is, “I do my best within the bounds of self respect with the cards of the moment, and everything else belongs to life”. According to Chelsea, this means you're always doing your best with the information and resources available to you at the time. With that mantra in mind, you should be less critical of yourself because you do not control the outcomes of your actions. After going through a growth period, you may no longer feel aligned with your old path, and change can be intimidating. That's where the third mantra comes in, “it's better to exist in the discomfort of what's unknown, than in the comfort of spaces that are familiar, yet do not serve me”. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn more about the three mantras Chelsea used to propel her growth journey forward. Quotes • “Stop asking blind people to proofread your vision.” (3:39-3:42 | Chelsea) • “People don't know what your bigger vision is. And those people don't have the capacity to appreciate your vision in the same way that you do.” (8:09-8:18 | Chelsea) • “I do my best within the bounds of self respect with the cards of the moment, and everything else belongs to life.” (9:42-9:48 | Chelsea) • “When I do my best within those bounds of self respect and with the knowledge and the nuance that I am familiar with at that time, then I've done the best that I can period. And there's nothing more that I can expect from myself at that point.” (13:52-14:07 | Chelsea) • “It's better to exist in the discomfort of what's unknown, than in the comfort of spaces that are familiar, yet do not serve me.” (18:19-18:37 | Chelsea) • “The familiar spaces were comfortable because it was the evil that I knew, rather than the evil that I don't know.” (21:28-21:35 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Have you been wondering whether or not to charge travel fees? Some options for covering travel are travel stipends, mileage, or time based fees that are separate from your base fees, or not charging travel fees at all. If you are not charging travel fees, you need to make sure you are adjusting your rates to cover your travel expenses. With the volatile market, inflation, and the price of gas, it is more important than ever to make sure your travel expenses are being covered one way or another. If you are not charging travel fees separately, an easy way to make sure you're being paid fairly for your time is to incorporate expected travel expenses into your base rates. Chelsea has different rates depending on what state her clients are in to account for tolls, parking fees, gas and wear and tear on her vehicle. In addition to setting your rate high enough to cover travel costs, if you are going to need to spend the night for a job, you should be requiring a travel stipend to cover the host of a hotel or Airbnb. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn more about options for making sure your travel expenses are covered. Quotes • “We charge travel fees because our time is worth money.” (5:48-5:50 | Chelsea) • “Can I charge a travel fee, both to the appointment and leaving the appointment to go back home or to my next appointment? Absolutely, you can charge for both and you should.” (10:52-11:00 | Chelsea) • “What I do in my business, and what I teach my students as well, is to charge an hourly rate within that service area that is high enough to cover your travel expenses. Your rates should be high enough to make your travel time worth it.” (11:41-11:56 | Chelsea) • “Advocate for yourself and advocate for your business by asking for a travel stipend.” (21:08-21:11 | Chelsea) • “You don't owe any explanation for any fee that you have in your business. You don't owe any explanation for anything that you do in your business. The way that you choose to run your business is completely up to you because you are the CEO.” (23:50-24:05 | Chelsea) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Are limiting beliefs holding you back from growing your business as a Hennapreneur? When speaking with her students, host Chelsea Stevenson noticed many of them have similar mindsets that are keeping them stuck in their businesses. If you feel like you are struggling to move forward with your henna business, Chelsea has tips for you. In today's episode, Chelsea shares five common limiting beliefs that could be holding you back. Whether you are a brand new to henna or have had a business for awhile, it is likely you hold limiting beliefs that are making it difficult for you to achieve your full potential. One common misconception is that your work has to be perfect before you can charge what your time is worth. This could not be further from the truth because if you are always aiming for perfection, you will never get there. Another common misconception is that you have to work festivals or work in bridal to earn a good wage. Chelsea counters these beliefs along with other common limiting beliefs to help you change your mindset so that your business can thrive. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn about five beliefs that may be holding you back from growing in your business and how to move past them. Quotes • “If you're constantly looking to reach “perfection” before you can charge what you'd like to charge to your clients, you're never going to get there. There will always be a reason for you to hold back.” (7:07-7:17) • “Charge your clients and charge what your art is worth.” (13:27-13:30) • “The support that you receive from your friends and family is rarely indicative of how the market will receive you.” (16:20-16:26) • “If you choose to keep your rates affordable and that is the only thing that you are hoping is going to set you apart inside of the market, I hope that you are very comfortable with the idea of settling for bottom barrel clients as well.” (21:58-22:14) • “Begin investing early. Allow investment to consistently be a part of your process as your business grows so that you can be making the right steps at the right time rather than making the wrong steps and then having to go back and fix them and end up feeling defeated when these wrong fit clients drop off.” (34:08-34:26) • “If you would like to build a henna business that's sustainable, one that is thriving, and one that also allows for you to feel really good and have time available to you, you can do this on the back of small private appointments.” (38:09-38:22) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Are you a people-pleaser who struggles with setting boundaries with your clients? If you do not set boundaries, you are at risk of being taken advantage of in ways that can cause your business to suffer. If you are struggling with saying no, listen to this personal story experienced by host Chelsea Stevenson. In today's episode, Chelsea discusses the importance of setting boundaries and sticking to them. Chelsea shares a story where multiple balls were dropped during the intake process, leaving the client with unrealistic expectations that Chelsea was unable to deliver. After being given the wrong address to the event, Chelsea was already off to the wrong start. Once at the venue, the client was requesting things that were outside of their signed contract. Rather than giving in, Chelsea stood her ground. At the end of the day, Chelsea and her client were able to come to a compromise that worked for everyone. But had Chelsea not stood up for herself, her business and mental health certainly would have suffered. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn the importance of boundaries and when to say no to a client so you can protect yourself and your business from unnecessary stress. Quotes • “You want to make sure that your time and your money are being protected in the event that things come up.” (6:50-6:56) • “Someone dropped the ball. Who that is, I don't know. Ultimately, I was hired and told to arrive at a specific time at a specific location, and I did that. But whoever was responsible for making sure that was the correct venue, didn't do that.” (10:33-10:50) • “The bride came over with some photos of full bridal henna that she was also expecting to get done at this event, and I had to let her know this was not included in our contract.” (13:11-13:28) • “Sometimes you have instances where you have a client whose expectation is not aligned with reality.” (14:35-14:41) • “It is okay for us to say no. Boundaries are so important and boundaries exist even in the context of how we engage our clients when we're working with them.” (17:54-18:03) • “If there's a change in expectation and or in the service that you're rendering, and that's going to require that you be compensated more, get your money first before you render that service.” (22:25-22:35) • “It's always appropriate for you to advocate for your business. It's always appropriate for you to advocate for the needs that you have in order for you to be able to service your clients at the best capacity and in the ways that make you feel really good and proud of your work.” (23:06-23:18) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) Do you struggle with using your voice to stand up for your needs? When you hide your voice, you don't allow others to actually get to know the real you. If you struggle to find the confidence to stand up for yourself, your host Chelsea Stevenson has some helpful advice for you. In today's episode, Chelsea discusses the importance of using your voice to build the life of your dreams. Chelsea lives a self-honoring lifestyle by using her voice to speak up for her needs and desires. Over time, Chelsea has learned that other people's reactions to what she says aren't really a true reflection of who she is, but rather who they are. To achieve your goals, it's important to advocate for yourself and not hide your voice away for the comfort of others. By listening to your inner voice and speaking up for your needs, you can learn to live a self-honoring life. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur to learn how to listen to your inner-child to harness that power of your voice so you can live a more fulfilling life. Quotes • “What's important is that we hear ourselves speak.” (0:52-00:56) • “People were looking to me to be a “role model” or an “influence” of some sort in their life. And it made me feel that I had to be perfect.” (4:13-4:32) • “I learned over time and through my own experience and growth journey that none of the stories that other people have about me reflect who I am. What people think about you is actually not your business. And it's of no consequence to you when you're living a life that's well aligned and a life of integrity.” (5:11-5:36) • “When you use your voice to shine light on different parts of you, you literally create a container in which the people around you get to choose how they act. Do they want to love you and accept you and support you for who you actually are? Or are you inadvertently allowing them to only know a version of you that even you aren't satisfied with?” (15:45-16:11) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) If you're making an investment of your energy, money, capacity then you are expecting a positive return. One that's going to place you closer to your goals and outcomes that you're hoping to achieve.” (7:46-8:12) • “Everybody says that they want it, but very few people will be willing to make the investments necessary to actually get it.” (8:45-8:50) • “We cannot operate from the a place of scarcity because by doing so, we limit ourselves to our current situation.” (9:37-9:44) • “Only 2% of the people will actually put in the work. As we start to take the steps necessary towards what we intend, we may actually find that we don't like it over there. We may then decide to pivot instead. (2:34-2:47) • “Sometimes when you try something new and you're open to something new it can feel almost like skydiving.” (4:07-4:13) • “If you're choosing to embark on this journey of being a hennapreneur, understand that there are going to be times where you're going to be incredibly challenged. To me, it doesn't make sense for us to try to compartmentalize our personal professional lives. For that reason, I strongly encourage you to really take account of what's important in your personal life first.” (04:50-5:21) • “What's the point of starting a business, engaging in a business, or growing a business that's going to leave you feeling burnt out? What's the point of growing a business that is not going to make space for the lifestyle that you actually hope to live?” (05:32-5:46) • “Don't try to overextend yourself. And are you open to growth, yourself, knowing that it's going to put you in a better position down the road, but it's gonna be quite the journey. So are you in for the ride? And are you able and willing to take care of yourself and communicate your needs and work that with your partner?” (0:00-00:42) • “You're going to be challenged with growth and growth is not just the business. Growth is everything around you.” (6:54-7:05) • “Nobody can tell you if you're right or wrong, because you're choosing what's best for you.” (34:00-34:03) • “I'm excited to see what this next journey brings and holds and I'm also terrified. “It's not that I resented the business. Maybe I resented the priority that the business took,” explains Ahmed Mahgoub, ex-husband of host Chelsea Stevenson. In this episode of Hennapreneur, Ahmed and Chelsea dive deeper into their discussion on how their marriage was impacted by Chelsea's business. For Ahmed, it all comes back to perspective and a gap in communication styles. He was proud to see Chelsea's business thriving, but felt that at times it took too big a priority over himself and their family. While Chelsea could use the business as an escape from the problems they were facing, Ahmed did not have that opportunity and felt that he was juggling things at home on his own. However, he did not express this to Chelsea during their marriage, because he wanted her to keep doing what was making her happy. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur for a continuation of the conversation with host Chelsea Stevenson and special guest Ahmed Mahgoub. They dive even deeper into how certain events changed their individual perspectives, influencing both the business and their marriage. Quotes • “Talking about perception, I was at the bottom and I felt at the bottom. It's like, okay well I need you to tap back in here. But how can I tell you to tap back in here if I'm bringing you back down to the bottom? If that's your happy place and that's where you're peaceful, of course I want you to stay there. I'm not gonna say, ‘Hey come back to reality and hurt with me.'” (13:38-14:06) • “At that moment, for me it's saying ‘you failed as a protector of your family.'” (14:56-15:04) • “Everything else is falling apart and I have two hands. Quotes • “The biggest growing pain was feeling left behind. It was noticing the gaps that needed to be fulfilled, but then I couldn't be the weight to hold you back. It's like you were starting to take off and starting to go pro. Even when we moved in after that, seeing that now you are starting to kind of flap your wings. Maybe you haven't flown yet, ut you have to maintain this balancing act and make sure that we have what we need as a family so that way you can step aside and start flapping your wings over there and see if you can take this off and fly and chase what you need to do. I want you to do that. It's not that I didn't want to. I wanted you to fly and I'm gonna cheer you on. But I'm gonna stay on the ground and take care of what we need over here and let you take off.” (0:02-1:03) • “We met back in middle school. That's honestly where we met. It's crazy because you have the different groups in school. You have the different classes, the nerds at the bottom and the preppiness up top, and the norms in the middle. And then you had this unique group. A little hierarchy going on. She stood in the middle to upper class. That uniqueness. This is somebody who is true to themselves. I vibed towards something. It definitely stood with me for a while after that.” (5:41-7:14) • “I had an interesting childhood. So, henna for me was one of the happy moments. I see you. I know it's really hard sometimes when you are in the thick of your business doing all of the things and you're not getting the results that you're looking for. And sometimes it becomes so challenging that you start to reach a place where you go, “I don't know. I'm not sure if I can do this or if I want to do this. Maybe it's best if I just quit now. Maybe it's best if I just let it go.” And if you are in that place right now, friend, or if you've recently passed through that place, or if you feel inside of yourself that you're beginning to reach that place, this episode is for you. Last week, global outages across the Facebook network left people all over the world without access to our primary social media platform for hours and hours on end. In response, I sent out a question to those hennapreneurs over on our email list and I asked what would happen if it were to stay down. I sent out the email wanting to know the answer to one very specific question: How would you keep your business going if social media weren't an option? In response, I got a ton of feedback from the Hennapreneur community with all different types of ideas on how they would continue to market their businesses without social media platforms, and in response to that, I decided that I'd host a little one-on-one private chat via Zoom, of course, so that we could discuss some lessons, some key takeaways of what the outage really should have highlighted for each of us as business owners. If you weren't there live for the session, I want to let you know that you're not going to find a replay on social, but I am going to treat you to the replay of that private session here on today's podcast and I hope that you enjoy it. If last week's incidences made you wonder, "Hmm, how would I market my business outside of social?" Well, you're really going to enjoy this episode. The customer is always right, but are they? There are few things as awkward as addressing clients who push against your boundaries as a business owner. More often than not, I hear from hennapreneurs all over that they choose to bow to the client's demands in order to maintain the peace and to avoid any scandal around their business. You may be surprised to hear, though, that this actually isn't something that I encourage. In this episode, I'm sharing two recent examples of instances where enforcing boundaries with my clients came into play. You'll hear the nitty-gritty details of what happened, who said what, and how I handled each scenario. If holding boundaries around your business is something you struggle with, grab your tea because you're going to really enjoy this episode. Many times, as creatives turned entrepreneurs, we go into the world of business with very limited exposure and experience to business finances. In fact, many of the hennapreneurs I consult with explained that they don't have money systems in their business at all, because they feel overwhelmed by the whole idea, embarrassed that they don't know what they don't know, and really unsure about how to deal with their money once they get it in the bank. In this episode, I'm breaking down some of the basic financial elements that I suggest building into your business for more sustainability and ease. If looking at your money or knowing what to do with it is something that makes you nervous, then this episode is definitely for you. So often as business owners, we look to build the thing that excites us the most. We want to have the things ready, be it, our website or our logo or our branding. We want to be out there in the world showing up as our best selves, and we want people to buy in and book now, right? And yet with all of these lofty goals, Oftentimes, we fail to make the decisions that are necessary in order to build a solid foundation for something that is both profitable and sustainable inside of our business. And it causes us to really miss the mark. Recently, I had a conversation with my eldest child about a business idea that he has, and you'd be surprised by how. Similar concerns and the thought process that he had around built that business is two things that I hear from hennapreneurs every single day. In this episode, I'm sharing some of the inner workings of some of the mistakes. Honestly, that business owners make when they're looking to build a business out and aren't yet prepared with the foundational pieces that are necessary for their own. There's nothing quite like the pain of knowing that you desire and deserve more than what currently exists within your grasp. In business, this is particularly true because our success is directly dependent upon our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. When your businesses' growth, your personal fulfillment, and your bank balance are all reflective of the work you put in, it can be particularly frustrating when you look around and find yourself unsatisfied or unhappy with what you've got. In this episode, I'm sharing three things that you need to release if you aren't where you want to be in your life and business today so that you can get to doing the important work of bringing your dreams to reality. Society tells women specifically that we can only be ambitious and passionate about making money or have big aspirations around money if we intend to sponsor someone else, have underlying philanthropic motivations, or otherwise intend to give it all away. And generally speaking, we aren't socialized to own and accept the idea that we can make money and keep it, or use it for the ways that make us feel good. That would be frivolous, selfish, or gross. I don't believe that any of this has to be true. When we approach our next level our identities are challenged. It is that question of Who are you? Who do you think you are? I remember when I'd just started my business, I was in a time in my life where I would literally put back $30 t-shirts because with that I could buy two brand new pairs of shoes for my son; or if I got his shoes on clearance, like, that could be three, maybe even four pairs of shoes. I wasn't going to spend that on a shirt for myself, to going into this designer fashion house and saying, "Ooh, I like these shoes. I'm going to buy them. Yeah, I'm not even looking at the price tag. Yeah, please just go ahead and ring me up." That is a very different experience. And what happened in between, right? I am so excited to share this very special, very fun, and very inspiring episode with Alyssa Corbyn of the Glitter Bee. If you didn't know, Alyssa is also a participant to Hennapreneur PRO – my 12-month program where I teach all the things business, design, marketing strategy, et cetera, to help you learn to build your own thriving, profitable henna business. I had the opportunity to touch base with Alyssa earlier this year to do a quick check-in and see how her business has grown from spring to spring, looking from 2021 back to 2020, and just to kind of get a pulse on the way that her business was growing and changing over the months that she'd been inside of the program at that point. I absolutely loved the insight and the growth that she was experiencing, so I wanted to share it with you today as well. Over the years, there's something that I've learned that's been incredibly impactful as it relates to generating more money in my business and, in general, creating a more abundant life and a more fruitful, positive, fulfilling life – both on the personal and professional side – and that is the way that I am attracting or manifesting those things that I want on a daily basis. Oftentimes, this is something that goes unheard of or unspoken about as we have conversations around what it takes to make more money, specifically. In today's episode, I want to have a little conversation with you about the Law of Attraction, what it is to attract abundance, how to live in abundance, and how to reconfigure and rewire your belief systems to allow for a more abundant present and future outcome. One of the hardest and most hurtful, honestly, lessons that I've learned in my henna journey is – sometimes you can't take people with you. There are going to be times when you will outgrow people and places and spaces. And in today's episode, I'm sharing a story about how that showed up for me as I made the transition into a full-time artist with henna boutique, and interestingly enough, this had nothing to do with the boutique at all. It actually came up in a festival setting of all places, but it was one of the moments that really defined for me that if I was going to grow, I had to be willing to do so, even if I didn't receive the support and validation of people who I thought would be in my corner. If this resonates with you at all, you're really going to enjoy this episode. On the heels of Mother's Day, I'm here talking all about how I'm, frankly, a selfish mom and how I have zero regrets about it. You know, today there are so many societal expectations around what a mom should and shouldn't do how she should carry on, how her children should be her number one priority, and frankly, I don't think that has to be the case. In this episode, I'm sharing about my experience as a mother, as a business owner, and as a woman who's just figuring it out and trying to honor herself in the most authentic ways in the process. Whether you're a parent, a caregiver, or someone else who's constantly in that role of servitude to others, I think you're really going to love this episode. Recently, a colleague shared that while she was looking through job postings, she found the following verbiage on a job post that said, "Research shows that men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the criteria required, while women and other marginalized folx often apply only when they fit every single item. If you believe you could excel in this role, but don't meet every single criteria, please get in touch anyway." She went on to say how reading this inspired her, not only to submit her application for the position but how it also inspired her to double down on her efforts to grow her business, which is currently inside 'hustle' status. Today, I want to talk to you about how you, too, may be self-limiting purely on the belief that you must meet all criteria required in order to be a successful business owner. And spoiler alert! "You are bound to fail." They don't even have to say those words directly. You can hear it in their tone when they ask you, "Are you sure that's a good idea?" You can see it in their body language when they talk about your business. Yup! You notice that side-eye. They don't believe in your vision. They don't believe that you can do it. They don't believe any of it to be possible. Adding insult to injury, this is someone who knows and loves you. It's your partner, your parent, your childhood friend. It's not some stranger on the internet, trolling your dreams. It's the person who you look to for support and encouragement. It's the person you were sure would be in your corner. And it hurts every time. Listen, friend, not everyone is going to appreciate your ambition. The people nearest to you are often the same ones who will be the quickest to come up with objections. And it's not that they mean to discourage you, they don't want to see you fail. They want to keep you safe. And they mean it with love; even if it's not to your actual benefit.
