My guest today is Valerie Metz. Valerie is a photographer, podcaster, mama of two - and proud Latina - based in Costa Mesa, California. Born in California to a Brazilian mother raised in Peru and a Mexican father, Valerie spent her early youth in a mostly white community, influencing the way she approached friendships, fashion and even her own name. That is, until becoming a mom changed everything for her. In this episode Valerie talks about how she learned to embrace her true self and her Latina roots, and how this influenced her style - looking to Chicano culture, vintage trends from Latin America and old photos of her mom for inspiration - to get to where she is today: wearing clothes that make her feel like herself, regardless of what everyone else is wearing. We also discuss times of transition, thrifting, the psychology of color and Valerie's creative project Moms on Film, celebrating raw motherhood and mothers of color. Plus, Valerie shares her advice for fearlessly embracing your own culture, even when you're afraid of not fitting in or being judged by doing so. —--------------------------------------—----------------------- Follow Valerie Metz Online: Personal Instagram: @mammafolk Valerie's Photography: Moms on Film Instagram: @momsonfilm Website: momsonfilm.co Valerie's Podcast: Hey Amigas Instagram: @heyamigaspodcast Listen: Hey Amigas on Spotify RATE + REVIEW If you enjoy this episode I would be so grateful if you could rate and review my show! Did you know that you can be stylish without the pressure, cost, and consumption of keeping up with the latest trends? Exit trendy, and enter - current. Would you wear the same dress for 100 days straight? My guest today did just that, and learned so much about her style - and herself - in the process. Before starting the Wool& 100 Day Dress challenge, Liesje Sandler felt limited in her clothing options as a plus size woman. Though she had always loved fashion, she felt that fashion didn't love her back. Fast forward to 100 days later, Liesje went from a wardrobe she described as “sad” to finding joy and confidence in her clothes - and having fun getting dressed. In this episode we talk all about Liesje's journey and, ultimately, the transformative power of experimentation, being creative and getting uncomfortable. We explore how she became inspired by a diverse community challenging the traditional media ideals of what a body should look like. And we discuss choosing sustainable clothing over fast fashion, how having a few *right* pieces in your wardrobe can make up for having lots of *wrong* pieces and dressing with bright, bold statement colors. Plus, hear Liesje's top tip if you're looking to try the 100 Day Dress Challenge for yourself. —--------------------------------------—- Follow Liesje's Dress Challenges Online: Instagram: @woolandcurls Learn More About Wool& and the 100 Day Dress Challenge: Wear a Wool& Dress for 100 Days Straight Wool& 100 Day Dress Challenge Group on Facebook “Could You Wear a Dress for 100 Days?” on The Guardian Shop Wool& - US and Europe RATE + REVIEW If you enjoy this episode I would be so grateful if you could rate and review my show! Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, the bad guys say "hold my beer". The REvil gang has managed to pull off what appears to be the biggest ransomware infection ever through a clever supply chain attack on a company you've never heard of called Kaseya. Kaseya is what we call a Managed Service Provider, or MSP. They manage software and IT functions for lots of small-to-medium sized businesses, so that those companies don't have to. But this also gives MSP's a very privileged security position, making it a prime target for bad guys wanting to infect a lot of companies with a single hack. Today I'll catch you up on this ongoing horror show and give you some tips on how to avoid becoming a ransomware victim yourself. In other news: Kaspersky Password Manager (KPM) was found to have a bad bug making its generated passwords a lot easier to crack; I'll tell you about how some Brazilian iPhone thieves came up with a clever way to hack your accounts; Google has delayed FLoC and blocking of third-party cookies for at least two years; a Microsoft exec tells the US Congress about how law enforcement and intelligence agencies make thousands of gag-order-restricted demands for data every year; a research group discovers that an old cell phone encryption standard was intentionally weakened to allow easier cracking; Microsoft's PrintNightmare bug is still not fully patched and the back story is a comedy of errors; and with hurricane season upon us, I'll point you to some great tips on preparing for power outages. Every week on the Upzoned podcast, host Abby Kinney, an urban planner in Kansas City, and regular co-host Chuck Marohn, the founder and president of Strong Towns, take one big story in the news and they “upzone” it—they look at it through a Strong Towns lens. At the close of a year in which towns and cities were tested in profound ways by a global pandemic and social unrest, it seems fitting that the final episode of the year should be about an article called “Will Cities Survive 2020?” Writing in Reason magazine, Christian Britschgi says that COVID-19 has reignited age-old debates about land-use and public health: The history of America's cities is, in a very real sense, the history of zoning regulations, which have long shaped real estate development, labor, and living arrangements. So it's no surprise that COVID-19, the biggest public health crisis in a century, which has occasioned an equally massive public health response, has already begun reshaping how people live in cities and how they are governed—rekindling old debates over urban density vs. suburban sprawl while raising new questions about the value of many land-use regulations. In the article, Britschgi describes the ways in which public health crises shaped cities in the past. But, says Britschgi, zoning codes initially justified as a way to protect health "have now gone far beyond nuisance laws...and control of infectious disease. They instead incorporated planners' desires to scientifically manage cities, protect property values, and combat the moral corruption that supposedly came with high-density housing." The coronavirus pandemic is similarly placing immense pressure on cities, but it remains to be seen whether communities will be allowed (because of that constrictive zoning) “to grow, evolve, and adapt to new challenges.” In this episode of Upzoned, Abby and Chuck discuss the Reason article and what effect 2020 will have on towns and cities going forward. They talk about why most cities are likely to survive, but probably not in their current form. They discuss why cities were so fragile in the first place, why disruptive change has become exponentially more common, and the surprising cities that can teach us about how to adapt creatively to a crisis. Then in the Downzone, Chuck continues his Christmas tradition of baking while listening to novels, most recently The Sentinel, by Lee Child. And Abby is doing some holiday crafting of her own...with a to-scale, gingerbread version of her own home. I have a tendency to hold onto things, which is why I needed to purge heartbreak in order to heal my inner child and move on with my life. I thought I was good, I thought I was moving on. Turns out that I was only going through the motions of moving on from heartbreak. Turns out I was not setting boundaries with others and I was not embracing that, yes, my relationship is over, I am a single mother, and there are people in my life that should be at a distant. So, I am sharing my heart with you all. Here are 3 ways to purge heartbreak and move on. I started the process a few days ago (4/4/20 - Pluto/Jupiter conjunction!) In today’s Greatest of All Time Series, we’re joined by none other than Barbara Bruno. She is someone who’s been in the staffing and recruiting industry for quite awhile and is an expert in her field. We invited Barbara over to answer some of the biggest questions on the back of every recruiter’s minds Barbara Bruno, The Staffing and Recruiting Expert What Are The Three Attributes of a Good Recruiter Integrity Integrity lets you build strong relationships with both candidates and clients. You can thrive in the industry without it, but your career is going to be short lived because of it. Listening Well The best recruiters are the best listeners and they don’t talk as much as they listen. The best recruiters key in to what’s important to people. This lets them use that knowledge to their advantage and be able to respond better to the client or candidate’s specific needs. Able to Think on Their Feet Being a good recruiter means being adaptable to the situation. Since there are two people on either side, you can expect that situations and priorities change constantly. If you can’t think on the fly then you’re dead in the water as things blow up constantly. What Would be The Three Pieces of Advice You Would Give to New Recruiters or Inexperienced? Know your Job They think they're supposed to interview candidates or write orders or give contracts when in essence our job very simply is to get candidates in front of hiring authorities and so if I'm talking to a new person what I tell them is your job is to book a send out Focus on Send Outs To have that first interview you've got to have a dividable order. If they do nothing more than constantly increase the number of send outs they book every month, they will elevate their production because everybody has to send out to fill or send out to placement ratio. You know once they're doing this three to six months they know that ratio and if they say the ratio is 5 to 1 if they send five more people up they make another placement and so you've got to know your numbers but I would tell them to focus on send outs. Plan If you think that you can’t plan every phone call, then think again. Barbara’s advice is to write down the six priorities you have closest to the money for the following day and ten calls. And then the following month you know six things closer to the money in 20 calls until you get to the point where you're handling the six priorities you have every day and you commit to doing those things What advice would you give that 20-year recruiter that's sitting around saying I know everything Barbara suggests that you shouldn’t forget that you’re the resource and the tools you get are just simply tools to help them. The greatest shift is happening where more than 50% of their clients are going to be millenials and most of the tenured recruiters blame the millennials for everything. They have to shift what they’re doing in their business or they’re going to end up dead in the water. What Does Someone have to Do Right Now to Recession Proof That Business? They can't have one client represent more than ten percent of their income. Have a broader client base. They can't have one client represent more than ten percent of their income, which is the biggest mistake. 2008 to 2010 many companies call Barbara going “oh my God I'm losing my business” and in almost every instance they made 75% of the revenue from less than five clients when these five clients went hiring they were dead in the water. Make your clients your friends and don’t just be a vendor You know so many times they view us as one of many and so I think you go from vendor to trusted advisor to consultant and then you've got to make your client your friend. You've got to become part of their life because if a recession hits and they can only use one resource and you've become the best listener in their life. Have more than one contact in a company The clients of the staffing and recruiting are changing more than ever and so often you've got one contact they leave and now you lose the client. So its great if you have more than just one contact in your client’s company. How Can You Get In Touch With Barbara Bruno Yourself The best way for anyone to contact Barbara herself is to call her at her number at 2196639609 or you can go to her website at https://goodasgoldtraining.com/. Quotes - Don’t just be a vendor, be their friend. - The best recruiters key in to what’s important to people.
As a homeschooler, I'm constantly reading this or that book to share with the kids. Recently I found myself knee deep in Aesop's Fables, and I came across a short story about a fox and a toad that made me think of the henna community. While I won't spoil the story for you here in the show notes, I will say this: there are plenty of quack toads out there who would be more than happy to give you bad advice about how to grow your technical and business skills (and charge you a fee for it, too). In today's episode, I'm talking openly about my thoughts on what it takes to be a mentor, what I recommend when it comes time to choosing someone to support you in your business, and giving you some tips on how to get the information you need to build your henna business regardless of your budget. Marie “Mxiety” Shanley joined me for a conversation about mental health, depression, streaming on Twitch/Mixer, and how to get help when you are struggling. She shares her own story of overcoming debilitating depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Since getting help, Marie felt compelled to create a place that connects people who are currently struggling with people who have struggled, so nobody ever has to be alone in their time of need. She has built a community on streaming platforms Twitch, and now Mixer, where she talks with her audience about mental wellness two nights a week. In addition to this, she’s written extensively about her mental health journey and experiences on her blog here. Please do check out Marie’s website, stream, and social channels, which you can find here: Website, Twitch, Mixer, Twitter, IG, YouTube. Here are some links to a handful of her very helpful blog posts on a range of mental health topics: 3 Things you can Do Right Now if You’re Anxious List of Things to do When You’re in a Depression Low List of Warning Signs that You Might be Falling Back into Depression Marie’s current streaming schedule is every Wednesday and Thursday night at 7 PM ET. Some of the things we talked about in this episode: Mxiety is a streamer on Twitch and Mixer. However, she doesn’t play video games like you may expect. Her show is about mental health and wellness. She’s apart of a surge of content creation meeting demand for mental health and wellness on streaming platforms by creating community around the topic and sharing personal experiences. Marie tells us about her mental health journey. One day Marie found herself sitting in a corner, struggling, rocking back and forth because of the pain she felt due to debilitating depression, anxiety, and PTSD. She shared with us about how she got to that point, and what she did to get better. We talk about how we label ourselves by our weaknesses and struggles. We talked about how and why we came up with labels and why we continue to use them both for the benefit of ourselves (or detriment) and because of how others expect us to label ourselves. Is there anything that could have led you to get help sooner? Marie talks about trying therapy, and going to a school counselor, which didn’t seem to work for her at first. She tells the story of experiencing suicidal thoughts and going to see the college counselor, who couldn’t help her in her time of need. We talked in detail about the extreme stigma around suicidal ideation. We discuss how hard it is to be open about this topic. Marie talks about how after 7 years of therapy, finally had a therapist who seemed to handle it appropriately and talk through it, instead of upending her life. We agreed that there is some work we must do as a society around how we respond to people who have these thoughts. Marie shares with us about where she finds support and what her support network looks like for her struggles. She talks about this by framing her current network against her old network, which was basically no support at all. She gives a list of things she tries to do daily, weekly, monthly, etc. in order to manage her mental wellness, which she has also discussed on her blog here. We talked about how she got into streaming and building a community of people interested in mental wellness. Once she found support in a local community, she wanted to create a place where people could find a sense of community when they are struggling. Marie talks about her streaming community and how many different people, with so many different struggles from all over the world have joined her community and engage in the conversation she creates space for several times a week on her stream, which you can find here on Mixer and here on Twitch.
