Welcome to episode 86 of The Way Out Is In: The Zen Art of Living, a podcast series mirroring Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's deep teachings of Buddhist philosophy: a simple yet profound methodology for dealing with our suffering, and for creating more happiness and joy in our lives. In this installment, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and leadership coach/journalist Jo Confino discuss Thich Nhat Hanh's calligraphic work ‘Are You Sure?'. Together, the presenters discuss how this simple question encourages us to examine our perceptions, assumptions, and certainties about ourselves and the world around us as a path to greater understanding and well-being. The conversation further explores the importance of cultivating an open, curious, and reflective mindset, rather than clinging to rigid beliefs or opinions; being present, listening deeply to ourselves and others; the value of community, friendship, and feedback in helping us to see our blind spots and to grow; the interplay between the historical and ultimate dimensions of life, and how holding multiple perspectives can allow us to respond with wisdom and compassion; and more. The episode concludes with a short meditation guided by Brother Phap Huu.Enjoy! So we are always creating perceptions, from what we see, what we hear, what we have observed. And a lot of the time we believe our perceptions. And because of our habitual energy of self, there is pride connected to it, there is certainty connected to it, and there is a righteous energy that we all carry in our way of being.” “The Buddha would say that 98% of our perceptions are wrong. And the other two percent should be our way of double-checking.” “Reflecting is double-checking. It is to look more deeply, to see the roots, the source of the perception that we have created. This is an ongoing practice. In some of our locations in the monastery, we have ‘Are you sure?' literally framed, because a lot of the time we can be very sure about our own self, about our own practice, about our own growth, and even about our own insight.” “The perception about Zen is that you reach enlightenment and then you’re done. But enlightenment is always enlightenment of something. And that enlightenment is a kind of understanding. And understanding is very organic. It has to be alive. It’s adaptive to the suffering of our times, the happiness of our times, the well-being of our times. So our looking deeply should always contain a question like, ‘Are we certain?', ‘Are we sure?'” “We’re living in a world with huge levels of uncertainty. We’ve got the sudden exponential growth of AI. We’ve got so much uncertainty in terms of economics, in terms of politics, in terms of climate change. There’s so much where we don’t know. And often people want to look for certainty when there’s uncertainty. They feel they need to find a grounding, because if they don’t feel grounded, then they can be overwhelmed and washed away. Let’s get back to some basics here: being certain is not really a good foundation – but Buddhism offers some very good foundations for living with uncertainty.” “I feel confidence when I want to show up with my full presence, but I don’t want to be so certain because then I’m not going to be able to listen. And as we know, and as our training shows, listening is already a communication.” “Don’t believe everything I say; believe what you put into practice.” “None of us will escape suffering. But if you know how to care for it, and you know how to tend to your suffering, you can grow the lotus out of the mud.” “We can’t reflect in a hurry.” “In 2025, with the uncertainties and the fast pace of our society, I think it's crucial that we see the importance of stillness, the importance of allowing our understanding to ripen.” “Zen is to learn to stop. It’s the first wing of meditation, it’s learning to give yourself the space and the time and the ability to pause.” “There are so many moments when we’re going to find ourselves sitting. So how can that moment translate from being still in our corner, in our home, to the engagement of our life with everything that we do?” “Wherever there is darkness, light will appear. Wherever there is light, darkness will also be there.” “The Buddha has taught us that every action we take – whether it's thought, speech, or bodily action – bears our signature. And we will receive the consequences of all of our actions.” “A breath is very spiritual because it allows us to be in touch with the whole cosmos. That is a very spiritual moment of interconnectedness.”

Though now with a whole new Elite Team of moms she certainly won't have to worry about saying the worst possible thing this week! Yes Abby has finally assembled her Junior Elite Team including: Sarah Hunt and mom Christy, Ava Cota and mom Jeanette, Jade Cloud and mom Loree, Sarah Reasons and mom Tracey, Tealynn (Tea) Adamson and mom Tami, and Kamryn Beck and mom Jodi. Joining them will be Maddie, because Abby is determined for the new team to dominate and Maddie can't lose.Tensions flare up quickly, though in an unlikely turn of events it's Kalani who comes out against the moms. As it turns out she has some history with Tracy and Sarah, referring to them as Arizona trash. Before things get too out of hand, Abby begins to pair off the new girls with the OG girls. This way each division gets two ALDC competitors and she can force the girls to compete against one another. The pairs are Chloe/Kamryn, Ava/Kendall, Nia/Sarah R, Tea+Sarah H/Mackenzie, and Kalani/Jade.With a competition in Ohio just around the corner it's time to get all the numbers in shape. But will the new moms manage to get along while the girls are hard at work? Well if you're Christy (with a Y) you can always call on the Lord to rebuke those moms you don't get along with. As Holly points out, Abby's perfect team is already not quite working.Quotes“Are you drinking anything interesting? Tea with MiraLAX in it... because I'm supposed to go to the bathroom. Today's listener question comes from a partner in a neurodiverse couple, asking us to talk about navigating differences when one partner has neurological differences like Autism or ADHD, and the other is “neurotypical.”Oh boy do we have thoughts and feelings about this! We end up spending a lot of time sharing how neurodiversity impacts our own lives, helping us discover that it's not about one partner being different, but about accepting the reality that we're different from each other. Inside of that, we find a lot of unspoken expectations, fears, and hurts, but…we also find a whole lot of amazing opportunities.Quotes:Are you expecting that what closeness feels like to you is the same as what it feels like to me?We can't have unspoken expectations and think we're going to meet each other in the same place. How do we have a conversation that's less about “you're different,” and more about “we're different? Not the same doesn't mean…rejection…it means not the same. This episode is brought to you by our amazing sponsor, The Academy of Therapy Wisdom. Think deep squats are a no-go for your knees? Think again! In this episode of The Code, Dr. Andrew Fix takes on the controversial debate surrounding deep squats and their impact on knee health. He dismantles the widespread notion that deep squats are detrimental, backing his stance with solid research findings. Dr. Fix argues that not only are deep squats safe, but they actually serve as a safeguard against injuries and issues in the lower extremities. He tackles the myth head-on, clarifying that deep squatting doesn't heighten the risk of damage to passive tissues like ligaments and the meniscus. Instead, this practice plays a crucial role in strengthening these structures, promoting robust ligaments. Further challenging conventional wisdom, Dr. Fix addresses the misconception that one's knees should never surpass the toes while squatting. He explains that while this restriction might lessen stress on the knees, it inadvertently ramps up the load on the hips and lower back, leading to unwanted strain in these areas. Dr. Fix advocates for squatting through a full range of motion, allowing the knees to travel past the toes, to harness the benefits of bolstered cartilage and ligaments. This approach, he suggests, not only enhances immediate strength but also contributes to long-term joint functionality and health. For those who've been cautioned against deep squats or advised to limit knee movement, this episode is an eye-opener. Discover the real story behind deep squats and how they can be a valuable addition to your wellness toolkit. Quotes: • “Are deep squats safe? Yes. Squatting deeply is safe. And in fact, it is protective against injuries and problems with the lower extremity.” (6:16 | Dr. Andrew Fix) • “People that were squatting often 10 training sessions per week, people that are pushing their bodies did not experience higher rates of injury. In fact, they had lower rates of injury than individuals that were playing basketball, running track and field, or doing gymnastics.” (11:04 | Dr. Andrew Fix) • “The more that we keep ourselves strong, the more functional we're going to be into the later years of our lives.” (14:42 | Dr. Andrew Fix) Links Research Article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23821469/ Squat Technique: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkIwzumjgGA&t=49s&pp=ygUYcHJvcGVyIHNxdWF0IHBoeXNpbyByb29t Movemate Award-Winning Active Standing Board https://www.letsmovemate.com/drandrewfix Exclusive Promo Code: DRA15 15% off the price! As we are halfway through the first month of 2023, have you checked in with yourself? How are you doing? Are you taking action towards your goals? As the year begins on a good note, it is important to take the time to plan out your year. In today's episode, host May Yeo Silvers teaches listeners how planning for the year can help you live a more intentional life. Many entrepreneurs feel like they can't accomplish everything they want to because they simply don't have the time. But according to May, we do have the time for the things we want to do, we just have to be better at planning for it. So when planning for 2023, you want to start with the big major events like holidays, weddings, and vacations. Then, you want to take a look at any industry events and block those times out. And after you have planned for the non-negotiables, you can look at what time is left for the extra things and it becomes easier to plan your day-to-day schedule. Even though it may seem extreme to plan a year in advance, it really can set you up for success. Once you have done it enough times, you will create new habits that free up your time to do more of what you want while still achieving all of your goals. I'm not just busy doing busy work. Every single work that I do is a building block to something else.” (09:23-09:34 | May) • “When the big events are already taking up spots on your calendar, you can see what the other open slots are. So when an opportunity arises, you can, at one glance, already know if you can take advantage of a new opportunity.” (20:19-20:35 | May) • “In order to be intentional, you first have to be self-aware.” (26:20-26:23| May) Links Connect with me at: may@events4anyone.com Website: events4anyone.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/mayyeosilvers Facebook: www.facebook.com/mayyeosilvers IG: www.instagram.com/mayyeosilvers TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mayyeosilvers FB private group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/events4anyone Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm
In this episode of Come Rain or Shine, Alex Kopacz, Canadian bobsledder and the reigning Olympic co-champion in the twoman bobsleigh event, joins the show to discuss his legendary athletic career. As a gold medalist and fierce competitor, Alex brings a level head to this interview brimming with marketplace application. Having matured from university shot putter to an international winter game icon, Alex's message is simple yet inspiring: Manage what you can control. While chance and luck have their place, what ultimately drives success comes down to effort, commitment, and attitude. Whether your skills are group oriented or individual in nature, accomplishment often starts with composure and focus. You may be fearless, but this should never be an excuse for pride and over-extending yourself. Alex also talks about constantly learning, new pursuits as a keynote speaker and mechanical engineer, and life after the Olympics. Burnout does not happen overnight. Most of the time, it's a slow and steady build-up, and it can creep up on you even when having a good time and you're not feeling particularly stressed or sad. In this minisode, Andresa gets real about her experience with burnout and how she recovered by rediscovering herself and reflecting on her business and personal life. She lists three essential things that helped her take back her balance and peace. She and Liz also emphasize discipline as the key to protect yourself from future burnouts.Quotes• “Are you the thinker? What are you thinking? Where is your time going? Is it your core genius or not?” (6:51-7:05)• “As you grow and you scale your company, you have to have thinkers, not doers, around you, that will really support, will take things from your plate, will stand for you, will say no to you.” (9:41-9:56)• “We have to express and not feel alone on figuring it all out ourselves ‘cause you're not going to figure it out all yourselves.” (10:11-10:14)• “If you want to scale, you got to fire yourself from your position and don't look back.” (11:48-11:53)• “The discipline to not fall into the trap of doing the same patterns as before is really huge. Leadership is a learned skill, and one fascinating field where we can draw inspiration from as leaders is the film and TV industry. In this minisode, Liz reflects on leadership lessons from the series Ozark. It's an award-winning show with great storytelling and characters and an even greater tale behind the scenes. She talks about how the creators of the show turned an idea into a successful series by being open to feedback, building the right team, and cultivating a culture of professionalism and collaboration on set. There's a lot to take from the show's leaders, especially with how they brought value to the table, that we can apply to whatever area of business we are working on.Quotes• “Are you approachable? Are you inviting feedback? And do you know what you're doing?” (5:31-5:37)• “You have to surround yourself with smarter people and be open to the feedback.” (5:48-5:53)• “We need to be meticulous in the sense of are you coming to your meetings? Are you coming to the project knowing what your role is?” (6:24-6:34)• “There's always a time and a place to bring on new energy, new fresh eyes on things, and welcome those people.” (9:18-9:24)• “Building a team comes back to leadership, and you're only as good as the leaders as well as the people on that team.” (9:34-9:42)• “If they have nothing nice to say about you, I think that's actually a problem.” (10:11-10:14)Resource Mentioned:OzarkMissed InvestHER CON 2022 or just want to relive the experience? The fast of Tisha B' Av was a time of mourning over the consequences of Israel's actions in not following the voice of God. The Lord spoke to Zechariah about this fast: “You did not listen when I called to you. For that reason, I have not listened when you called to Me” (see Zechariah 7:13). This should be a warning to us today. If the Lord is not hearing our prayers, or if we are in devastating circumstances, we should make this Tisha B' Av a time to repent of our own lack of response to God's voice. Only then can we activate the promise that He will turn the fast into a feast of rejoicing. Show Notes: The fast of the fifth month, known as Tisha B'Av, is considered the saddest day of the Hebrew year because it observes several disastrous events that happened in Jewish history, starting with the destruction of Solomon's Temple by the Babylonians in 423 BCE. The book of Zechariah records that this fast was observed during the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple after the Babylonian captivity. When Zechariah inquired of the Lord about this fast, the Lord made it clear that Israel and Judah would continue to live with the consequences of their rebellion if they observed this fast for themselves and refused to listen to His voice. As Christians we cannot look on this fast as something for Jews only. Many of us today have seen what we built being torn down just like the Temple was. We seem to be losing the battles that we are fighting and are living with disastrous circumstances in our lives. Maybe these are outward signs and consequences that God is using to get our attention to lead us into fasting and prayer. In Tisha B'Av we have an opportunity to look at the times of shaking and shattering in our lives and ask God to bring His grace and forgiveness and restore our relationship with Him. The Lord is always in a process of making all things work together for our good and bringing us into the fulfillment of all that He has for us in our lives. So we enter into the fasting and mourning of Tisha B'Av by faith, knowing that the promise of God is that the Lord will hear us if we turn our hearts to Him—and He will turn our fasting and mourning into days of joy, gladness, and cheerful feasting. Key Verses: Zechariah 7:2-14. “Shall I weep in the fifth month and abstain, as I have done?” Zechariah 8:13-23. “The fast … will become joy, gladness, and cheerful feasts.” Leviticus 26:14-46. “If … you act with hostility against Me, then I will act with hostility against you.” 2 Chronicles 7:11-14. “Then I will hear from heaven … and will heal their land.” Isaiah 58:6-8. “Is this not the fast which I choose?” Isaiah 58:9-12. “Then you will call, and the LORD will answer.” 1 Corinthians 2:10-16. “For the Spirit searches all things.” Psalm 139:23. “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” Romans 8:26-28. “He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is.” Haggai 2:5-7. “I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.” Hebrews 12:26-27 “… so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.” Haggai 2:8-9. “The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former.” Resource: Learn more about the Fast of Tisha B'Av at chabad.org. Quotes: “Are we seeking the Lord because we're really seeking Him and looking to find His will and His ways, or are we doing this so that we seem more righteous and religious?” “As the Church enters into fasting and crying out to God during Tisha B'Av, I believe there is going to come a reversal of the anti-Semitism in our day to the point that people will say to Jews, ‘Take us with you to the house of God because we heard that God is with you.'” “As Christians, we must understand that we have the Holy Spirit to assist us in the process of seeking Him in praying and fasting. Our spirits, guided by the Holy Spirit, are able to search our own hearts and to make us aware of the areas of blindness and disobedience in our lives.” “The latter glory of what God is bringing forth in your life will always be greater than the former glory of that which God has allowed to be shaken down and destroyed surrounding you.” Takeaways: Recognize that God is the Master of your circumstances. Expect Him to turn the negative events and circumstances in your life to good. Look at your circumstances honestly and objectively as places and points of repentance. Know that if you love Him and seek Him with honest repentance, He will bless you. He is shaking you and bringing you into a time of repentance because He has something better for you and wants to bring you a greater blessing. 3.Do what the Lord said to do: He wants us to humble ourselves; He wants us to pray; and He wants us to seek His face and turn from our wicked ways (2 Chronicles 7:14). Prayer: Father, by faith we cry to You in the name of Yeshua. Cleanse us of our sin and help us to turn from the wickedness that has brought us into the destructive circumstances that are consuming our lives. Make all aspects of our lives work together for good and pour out Your abundant grace that we might experience a future filled with Your presence and Your glory. Amen.
“Are you letting the thoughts and opinions of somebody else stop you from doing things that you enjoy?” asks host Dr. Andrew. If you're a person who is passionate about self-development, then it's vital to surround yourself with the right people. Today, Dr. Andrew stresses the importance of spending time with positive influences who encourage you to lead a healthier lifestyle and chase your goals. As Dr. Andrew has gotten older, the more he's realized the value in having relationships that contribute to stress management and challenge you to be better and better. If you have people in your life who prohibit your progress, it's ok to rethink who you see on a day-to-day basis. “You're going to be challenged with growth and growth is not just the business. Growth is everything around you,” shares Ahmed Mahgoub, ex-husband of host Chelsea Stevenson. In this episode of Hennapreneur, Ahmed and Chelsea look back on their experiences throughout their relationship and talk about what they've learned from one another. Ahmed and Chelsea had a gap in their communication, understanding, and needs throughout their marriage. By taking a step away from each other through their divorce, they were able to better see and address that gap. They acknowledge that the gap is smaller now than it was before because now they are able to grow separately and appreciate that growth for each other. Tune into this week's episode of Hennapreneur for the final installment of the conversation with host Chelsea Stevenson and special guest Ahmed Mahgoub. Learn how they faced their challenges both together and apart and the implications this had for their marriage and Chelsea's business. Quotes • “Are you invested enough into the relationship to say I'm going to support my partner no matter what. Because you are going to be challenged. Are you going to stay in the game to grow? And are you open to growth, yourself, knowing that it's going to put you in a better position down the road, but it's gonna be quite the journey. So are you in for the ride? And are you able and willing to take care of yourself and communicate your needs and work that with your partner?” (0:00-00:42) • “You're going to be challenged with growth and growth is not just the business. Growth is everything around you.” (6:54-7:05) • “Nobody can tell you if you're right or wrong, because you're choosing what's best for you.” (34:00-34:03) • “I'm excited to see what this next journey brings and holds and I'm also terrified. But that's life. It's unpredictable. Once you get comfortable, then you got something coming.” (43:08-43:27) Links Hennapreneur Community (Facebook Group): https://www.hennapreneur.com/community Hennapreneur Website: https://www.hennapreneur.com Hennapreneur Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hennapreneur Hennapreneur Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hennapreneur.official Hennapreneur YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/hennapreneur Watch the 5 Biggest Mistakes New Henna Artists Make (And How You Can Avoid Them!) What does it take to succeed? If you ask Andrew Ettinger, Chief Revenue Officer at Astronomer, the answer is hustle and curiosity. As a leader in open source and data-focused startups, Andrew stands by his belief that working hard and learning everything you can about your industry can take you as far as you want to go. Learning was the real driver behind Andrew's conversation with host Chris Smith, as they dive into Andrew's career story and how he found himself at Astronomer. When he took the job with his boss and mentor Joe Otto, Andrew knew almost nothing about data pipelines. But Joe was confident he was the right person for the job, and Andrew was passionate about learning. Ten years later, Andrew has taken a lead role in this rapidly growing company, and has become an expert not only in the industry, but in sales and executive leadership. Andrew and Chris talk about tracking losses in CRM, giving your team room to fail, and what it really means to hustle. At the end of the day, Chris's definition of working hard is all about customer satisfaction - if the customer is happy, he knows he's done his job right. In this episode: Managing anxiety during the current season Tangible tips & coping mechanisms for managing stress Techniques for navigating fear in real time Refocusing your brain on what needs to be done I am so excited that you’re here today, because this is a really different style of episode & a super important topic. We are talking about anxiety, but the format is a little different because we actually stripped some audio from a video call we did with The Collective members. In our global personal development community we have bonus opportunities to connect on live calls with experts in different fields. One of them was with a psychotherapist named Kristi Thrailkill who I actually LOVE & has been on the podcast twice before as well. What you’re going to hear in today’s show is sound bites of Kristi doing a live Q&A with us talking about managing anxiety & navigating this season. There is so much going on & so much that we can’t control, so I just had to bring this content to you because I think you will get a ton of value from it. I can’t wait to hear what you think & don’t forget to tag us both with your takeaways on IG! Quotes: “Are you listening to these messages and are they actually resonating with you, are they actually where you want to be? And if not, then be in your own camp.” “This isn’t a forever thing, so we want to be able to just get through it. It’s not a matter of learning to handle a pandemic well, it’s let’s survive it.” “If you have to watch the news, don’t do it the first 30 minutes that you wake up & don’t do it 30 minutes before you go to bed. It is so detrimental if the first thing you do is roll over & pick up your phone & read horrible stuff. Thanks to the current pandemic, most of the population is quarantined at home. During this time, some may want to consider using psychedelics. However, there are some additional considerations to keep in mind when deciding whether to undergo a psychedelic journey during the quarantine. Rebecca Kronman is a licensed therapist and the founder of Plant Parenthood, a community of parents who use psychedelics. She is a psychotherapist with a private practice in Brooklyn, NY where she works with clients to help them prepare for and integrate after psychedelic experiences. In this episode, Rebecca discusses the concept of harm reduction. This means that no one is advocating what anyone else should or shouldn’t be doing. Rather, it is about asking that people explore the topic of psychedelics with all the information available. With the right knowledge and confidence, people will feel better prepared for whatever they decide to do. Given that hospitals are currently overtaxed and undersupplied, considering what might happen if a psychedelic experience goes wrong is more important than ever. Rebecca talks about how heightened levels of anxiety are going to play into this and how is more crucial that someone is attuned to their mindset before undertaking a psychedelic experience. Rebecca shares some tools that people can use to listen to what their mind and body are telling them. If, after taking everything into account you decide this isn't the proper time to be journeying for you, then it can still be used to prepare for one in the future or integrate one from the past. That being said, for some individuals this time may be too overwhelming for that and it might be best to wait for another time. Rebecca stresses that everyone needs to evaluate their own situation and make an informed decision. In this episode: What harm reduction means and how it relates to psychedelic use Important considerations if an experience goes awry Tools for evaluating mindset during times of heightened anxiety Using this time to prepare for a future experience or integrate a past one Quotes: “Are we okay with the fact that the hospital might not be available to us right now?” [6:20] “Any way that you can create space for yourself and pause - any kind of contemplative practice - is going to be extremely useful.” [11:10] “This is an entropic period for all of us. Our whole lives look different. We may be in a different place. Definitely, we’re doing different things. Our whole routine has shifted. Greater entropy gives us greater opportunity for shifting patterns. That’s what psychedelics are about.” [20:07] “If it feels accessible to us to add something new into our integration practices, this is a great time. If we’ve got too much on our plate, have compassion for ourselves and say ‘drop the technique.’” [22:27] Links: Plant Parenthood Follow on Instagram The Psychedelics Integration Handbook by Ryan Westrum, Ph.D. Check out the full episode post Keep up with everything Plant Medicine related here Porangui
Attention Entrepreneurs: You’re not in this alone! Today I’ve brought my brand new (been with us for several months) Director of Operations, Megan Hansell Henderson, on to discuss what it means to accept help in your journey. Megan went from professional, to stay at home mom, to work at home mom because her fulfillment comes from more than traditional motherhood. FYI: there is nothing wrong with that. Despite the fact that her oldest needs an advanced level of care, she knew that she needed more to bring her a sense of fulfillment. Fast-forward to the past year. While she has her MBA she decided that she wanted to learn more about the online space. She obtained a certification in online operations and began living her dream. Now she’s decided that dream is centered on supporting her family and the I Heart My Life Movement. Here’s the thing, you don’t have to choose one over the other. Your success in business does not have to eclipse your success in family life. Listen in as Megan shares how she has found a balance between entrepreneurship and family and why this model works best for her. Here’s the thing, we as human beings will find any excuse necessary to avoid the uncomfortable. One of the BIGGEST excuses is that we don’t have the time or resources to solidify our dreams. Megan puts all of those excuses to bed. Listen in to learn why. If you can’t move beyond the excuse of time or resources… if your mindset refuses to shift… are you sure you’re ready for entrepreneurship? If you are, then this is the conversation you need to hear to move beyond those blocks! In this Episode: [00:30] Don’t wait too long to build your team! Learn why you need a head of operations. [01:48] Learn more about Megan and why she decided to dive into entrepreneurship. [04:33] Why corporate? Why an MBA? [06:56] Who opened up Megan’s eyes to see what was possible in the online space? [08:10] Why did Megan pursue entrepreneurship while staying at home with her kids? [09:42] No matter what you choose, life has another plan for you. [12:37] How have certifications and masterminds pushed Megan’s career forward? [19:32] Why just one business? Why I Heart My Life? [21:58] Business owners, admit that you need help! [24:15] Burnout is real… you may not even realize you’re there… but it signals a need for help! [26:40] Take a look at your finances… how much are you worth? These are the steps you should actually take with nothing extra thrown in there. One of the most important aspects to consider when starting your own service-based business is defining who you actually want to serve. You need to get specific here. You’re not going to want to serve every single person in the world or even every woman in the world! A more defined niche will actually help you find clients, not hinder you! Did you know that your limiting beliefs could actually be holding your business back from starting? Trust me when I say that if you want to build your business, you absolutely CAN, no matter what anyone else tells you. You just need to believe in yourself. When it comes to writing your business’s vision statement, I encourage you to think big. Think about what you really want to achieve with your business in 5, 10, 20 years time and write it down. If that’s providing a full-service business with employees, that’s great! If it’s staying as a freelancer, there’s no shame in that. I often tell you that your network is your net worth and this is especially true when starting your business. Find the people in your network who can help you build your website, do your graphics, write your copy - whatever it is you need help with, find someone in your network and build a relationship with them. Above anything else, it’s so important that you just start your business. It’ll never amount to anything if your ideas stay in your head. So here’s to launching imperfectly and growing from there. Are you thinking of starting your business? Do you let imposter syndrome hold you back? Who in your network can help you start your business right now? In This Episode: Why starting your business doesn’t have to be as hard as the internet will let you believe What steps you should take to actually start your service-based business Why it’s so important to define your target market when starting out How you might be limiting your business vision because of your own beliefs Why you need to think big when writing your vision statement How your network can help you get your business going Why you should just get started with your business Quotes: “Are you limiting your possibilities because you don’t see it’s possible? Because it is. It is if you have the right guidance.” (14:24) “Your target client isn’t just someone with money or even ‘women’. It needs to be a specific, detailed niche.” (20:55) “Let me tell you something. There’s another saying after ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’ and it’s ‘you don’t know what you do know.’ You have experience, skills, and abilities that people will pay you for.” (21:47) Links Freebie: Want To Set Your Business Up For Success Guide Find Dr. Cortney Baker Online Follow Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Subscribe to Women in Business on Apple Podcasts Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Working with national brands doesn’t have to be some crazy, out of reach goal. In fact, being the director of a creative video company who does this work doesn’t have to a pipe dream! All it takes is a little ingenuity, bravado, and a sense of adventure. Today’s guest took a chance while working as an editor for a talent agency. JP Bolles admired the work of his Adam, the owner of Sandwich Video, and when he saw he was looking to bring someone on board, reached out. Together, JP and Adam have built a company of 20 employees and work with brands across the country. In this interview, we talk about what it takes to be a creative director of a large, and growing, creative company. We look at the creative process and how you should start to share your projects with your clients, even when it might be taking longer than you thought it would -- and what was agreed. And perhaps most amazingly, we’re looking at Sandwich Video’s collaboration with Wistia. This documentary, One, Ten, One Hundred, is a behind the scenes look at creating ads with different budgets. An important takeaway from this documentary is not letting your equipment or budget hold you back from creating something incredible. How do you talk to your clients when things aren’t going as planned? When’s the last time you reached out to collaborate with someone you think is out of your league? Let’s talk about it in the comments on the episode page! In this episode: Why you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out to people you admire for collaboration opportunities How to navigate talking to clients when a project is taking longer than expected What the best way to share projects with clients is and why it works How a client’s budget impacts an ad outcome and how you can work within a client’s budget Why your equipment shouldn’t hold you back from filming your passions Quotes: “Are we proud of this project and can we take on this client and actually help move them into a better position?” [7:16] “It’s so easy to have all the anxieties and outside pressure come into the way of things. I mean, it happens to absolutely everybody, even if you have a big ego. You second guess things you’re not sure of and all that does is create a worse environment for you to work in.” [41:07] “Knowing that if it’s a flop, if it fails in whoever's eyes - it’s okay. And to be okay with that, to learn from the mistakes that we might have made along the way and to grow and become better. Those things are gonna happen. So follow your intuition. Do that thing. Don’t not do it!” [42:16] Links: Find JP & Sandwich Video online Follow JP on Instagram | Twitter Follow Sandwich Video on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Youtube One, Ten, One Hundred Studio Sherpas Tribe Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Be sure to take the Studio Sherpas survey for a chance to win some incredible prizes (if we do say so ourselves!) Doug Schumacher joins the show today to talk with us about the present and future of speech and voice recognition, Facebook as the new MySpace, and exactly what Facebook is apologizing for today as opposed to yesterday. He also discusses where the voice space is being used correctly and where the strategy falls short. Doug is in a unique position not only from the perspective of a marketer but someone accumulating marketing information from working social media channels. Takeaways: [3:30] Friendship doesn’t count unless it’s on Facebook, right? Doug and Kevin are celebrating their 10th Friendaversary, through being pals on Facebook only before linking up in the human realm. [5:54] As of December 14, today’s Facebook apology was a bug that may have exposed photos of 6.8 million people. Doug explains that people have had a good tolerance for privacy violations in the past, but he feels it would be the one he would miss the least of The Big Four (Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon). [13:46] It’s one thing for a user to understand that in using a site or network, they are giving some access to their information to marketers. It’s another for the site completely to breach privacy wishes when users intentionally decide to not share photos or data that ends up getting shared. [16:02] It’s very rare that it’s one thing that happens in a network’s “slow death.” It happens over time, with one of the standing concerns is the Groups feature being tarnished, as many name Groups as one of the last standing features they still find useful and worthwhile on Facebook. [22:01] It varies from network to network, but community size, fan growth rate, activity levels, posting volumes, engagement volumes are the major KPIs people are looking at. Beyond that, content analysis can tell us why specific things are happening and what types of content people are engaging with. [26:07] To Doug, social media is just one simple easy place to follow what a brand is doing, and to also stay on top of the latest in your competitor’s world. [30:02] The voice space is growing quickly, with a user base of 50 to 60 million users so far in the U.S. alone. [32:35] In Google search, while people tend to use short, succinct phrases, they tend to ramble in Voice search. This shows not only the difference in the way people interface but the need for Voice to work in different parameters. [33:41] The big complaint in Voice now is not being understood or heard correctly. [45:09] The common tasks that people find helpful and effective for Voice are to play music, set timers, and go to hands-free in the kitchen. In some ways, it’s introducing people to consuming new content and communication in a convenient way. Quotes: ● “Are people becoming numb to these data breaches?” ● “Every time I log onto Facebook lately it feels more and more like MySpace circa 2006.” ● “I don’t share nearly as much as I used to on Facebook. There are a whole bunch of other ways to get hopped up on dopamine.” ● “There’s a certain type of industry literacy that goes along with knowing what your competitors are doing.” ● “Every major brand is going to want to have some presence in the Voice web.” Mentioned in This Episode: “John Oliver Flushes Facebook Down the Toilet with a New Fake Ad” “Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica Controversy Could Be Big Trouble for the Social Network Network. You know how your to-do list just seems to keep growing endlessly, to the point where you know you’ll never get everything (or even anything) on it done? Many of these tasks you know would move your business forward if you could only get to them, and yet there are never enough hours in the day or days in the week to sit down and knock them out. We feel ya, and today, we (Matt & Ryan) want to share with you how we’ve used creative hiring in our businesses to free up our time to focus on our strengths, while also taking care of the small things that are necessary to keep the businesses running smoothly, profitably, and effectively. When you think about hiring, you might immediately think about editors, shooters, and producers, which can seem daunting - and expensive. The truth is that there are probably 100 tasks in your business that could be hired out incredibly cheaply without committing to a monthly salary, which will save you time, and be done better than you would have yourself. We share some common misconceptions that keep video producers from hiring, how we got started building our teams, how we use virtual assistants and freelancers to take care of the minutiae associated with running a business, and how hiring out work could actually save you thousands and thousands of dollars. We’d love to hear what tasks you routinely hire out, or what’s keeping you from outsourcing if you haven’t yet. Let us know in the comments! In this episode: Different ways to hire that you might not have thought of before and the values of each role Our experiences of how our teams have actually saved us thousands of dollars Where to get started with your first hire, and how it’s easier and cheaper than you’re probably thinking How to hire a VA and which tasks you should consider outsourcing Quotes: Are you charging what you want to charge, are you making the kind of money you want to make? What is your hourly rate? And if you don’t know that, then it’s really easy to say, ‘Well, of course I’m not going to hire an accountant, to do my accounting, because that’s going to cost $1500 at the end of the year.’ But, when you start thinking about how long does it take you to get all those papers together, and to start punching numbers into QuickBooks. If you want to charge $200 an hour for your time, would you ever pay an accountant $200/hr?” [7:53] What I was able to experience life wise, by not having to think about the numbers, and not having to keep track of all these things, but to have someone that was doing that for me was incredibly freeing, super life-giving. It’s hard to put a number on that.” [11:38] Links: Upwork Fiverr Studio Sherpas Episode 55: How To Set Goals That Will Grow Your Business In 2018 Check out the full show notes page Stay up to date with everything we're doing at Studio Sherpas
