In “It’s Not About the Moneyâ€, we look past formulas, and explore both the nuance and the big picture of the fundraising journey. It’s not about tips, tricks, or clever phrasing. It’s about being grounded. Each episode focuses on an aspect of real life as a support-seeker. We hold space for both practice and theory. Fundraising can be exhausting—but what if it's more than just a tough season? What if the way your brain works actually impacts how you navigate support raising? Whether you're neurodivergent yourself, support someone who is, or are shaping organizational policies, this conversation is packed with grace, insight, and practical ideas for a more inclusive approach to support-based ministry.
In this episode of It's Not About the Money, we're joined by Bernie Anderson—missions leader, podcast host, business consultant, and certified Growability coach. Bernie helps us reframe our ideas around sales and fundraising, showing how sales, when done with integrity and generosity, can become a transformative experience for both the giver and the receiver. We talk about why fundraising isn't a transaction but a transformation, why great fundraisers are great listeners, and how donor alignment is better than manipulation. Bernie shares wisdom on identifying donor personalities, avoiding burnout through authenticity, and how storytelling—done honestly—can drive partnership fruit. If you've ever felt awkward "making the ask" or have been burned by manipulative sales tactics, this episode will feel like a breath of fresh air. Bernie reminds us that fundraising is discipleship, that rejection isn't failure, and that there's no such thing as “sacred vs. secular” when you're doing Kingdom work.
“I was probably the wealthiest person in my family when I chose to go into ministry—then I had to go back and ask my family for money.”“If God did it in my life, He can do it in yours.”“If you're not willing to be faithful, I can't do much with you. But if you are—I got you.”In this powerful episode, Tony Dentman of Funding Tribe joins hosts Heather and Andy to reframe the soundtrack of “This is impossible.” Tony shares his journey from inner-city St. Louis to full-time ministry, despite having no wealthy or Christian background. He explains how his organization empowers minority leaders to get fully funded and mobilized for mission. The conversation dives deep into character formation, faith-building, and the systemic lie that fundraising success is tied to privilege. A must-listen for anyone who has ever doubted their calling or resources.
In this thought-provoking episode, Dr. Mandy returns to share her ongoing journey in ministry and fundraising. The conversation explores how ministry fundraising transcends mere numbers—it's about personal formation, genuine partnerships, and living out one's calling. Dr. Mandy recounts her early introduction to support-based ministry, her refreshing re-engagement with longtime partners (including a memorable 5000-mile road trip), and the lessons learned from her leadership challenges. Interwoven with rich Scripture readings (notably from Second Corinthians and other Biblical passages), the discussion offers spiritual encouragement and practical insights on overcoming doubt, resisting the temptation to “fix” everything, and staying true to God's word. Listeners are encouraged to lean into community, continuously study Scripture, and trust that every step—even the hard ones—is part of a greater divine plan.Recommended Resources Mentioned:Perspectives courses (visit perspectives.org)Books: Mountain Rain by Eileen Fraser Crossman and The Prayer of Faith by James O. In our media and marketing-driven world, people -- as consumers -- can become quickly disenchanted. In fundraising, we want to strike a balance between being prepared and not "performing." Travis Cottrell joins us in this episode and highlights the importance of authenticity in approaching others and inviting them into partnership. This year, Travis will celebrate a ministry milestone: 25 years of serving alongside Beth Moore as worship leader for Living Proof Ministries. Patty S. (season 2 episode 4) joins us again to recap our conversation with Dr. Jolly Johnson on the Choice City Planner. We explore the many ways this tool helps us be intentional with this one life we are given and talk about it's use more specifically in fundraising.
One of the common refrains we hear in the work of fundraising is, "There just isn't enough time to do it all or to do it well." Our time and attention are precious resources. Our guest today, Dr. Jolly Johnson, found himself -- ironically -- with too much time on his hands and set out to develop a resource to use it well. He created the Choice City Planner first for himself but made it available to others as well. The Choice City Planner was created to help you identify and achieve what matters most so you can thrive and be a blessing. Do you feel overwhelmed by all the things you have to manage and accomplish? This planner was created to help you cut through the clutter and make progress towards the things that matter most.In our conversation with Jolly, we hit on what it looks like to identify what matters, make plans with intention, and build life-giving habits. These are timely skills that help us balance the elements of ministry and partnership development and stay emotionally healthy.Want a sneak peak at the planner? Hannah O. joins us and shares passionately and vulnerably about her own disruptions and tensions with family as she has launched into support based ministry.
Many in the North American church "get it." They have context for support-based work and see their part in it... but many don't.Today's episode is actually in response to a question from a listener. "What do you do when your family isn't supportive, when they tell you that you should get a 'real' job?"Spencer and Annette Nicholl have been support-based workers for over thirty years, but the early days of their journey were not smooth. They humbly share their experiences in navigating an unsupportive family and community while maintaining a resolved trust in God's goodness.Spencer and Annette now live and work in Colorado with Big Horn Ministries - a ministry they founded to provide care for ministry workers.
In this first recap of season 3, Corrie brings a wealth of perspective into our discussion of Drew Remke's episode focused on partnership with the local church. Corrie lived and worked in support based ministry for just shy of a decade before moving back to North America where she currently works in the marketplace as well as serving as a fundraising coach and a member of her church's mission committee.
We are kicking off season 3 with a timely discussion on the importance of launching into ministry with the holistic support of a local church - a body of believers that you are committed to and that know you well. Joining us for this discussion is Drew Remke.Drew Remke is the Vice President of Church Partnerships for Pioneers USA. Pioneers is a global movement people seeking to glorify God by planting churches among the least reached places on the planet. Drews team works primarily with the 3400 sending and supporting churches of the Pioneers USA members. The team strives to create meaningful partnerships with local churches, to strengthen them in their attempts to fulfill their role in reaching the unreached. Before leading the Church Partnerships Team, Drew and his family spend 12 years in the Arabian Peninsula serving in different roles. He planted and pastored multiple international churches, established several small businesses, created leadership development programs for members of the organization as well as overseeing missionary teams across the Arabian Peninsula. Jordan is currently a student at Liberty University where she is completing her master's in clinical and Mental Health Counseling. After 12 years on the field in which saw an average of 300 nights a year of overnight house guests, it became clear that counseling was not only a gift but a calling. Before serving overseas Drew and Jordan were founding members and staff of Redeemer Church of Lubbock, which has sent more than 75 people to the nations in its first 15 years of existence.
