Joey Mure, Founder and Partner at Wealth Without Wall Street, brings impact, integrity, and generosity to the company every day. He hopes to be remembered as a lover of Jesus, devoted husband, and faithful father. Despite dreaming, around age 10, of becoming an orthopedic surgeon, Joey was in the mortgage business for 11 years before moving to finance in 2014. His personal mentor, Nelson Nash — another man of integrity and impact — is someone Joey deeply admires. Joey's strengths in building relationships, asking great questions, and influencing and empowering people with the Wealth Without Wall Street message make him invaluable to the company's mission. He is relational, impactful, and a true leader. His colleagues would add that he's thoughtful, funny, and a family man. Many people don't know that Joey ate a 72-ounce steak dinner once. If he could be anywhere other than work, you'd find him at the beach with his family. And every Sunday morning, they're worshipping the Lord. A lifetime goal of Joey's is to impact the world for Christ; and a more near-term goal is to purchase a beach house for my family. Aside from Wealth Without Wall Street, Joey listens to Sharran Srivatsaa's Business School podcast and Donald Miller's Building A StoryBrand podcast. He's happiest when he's traveling with his wife or golfing with his girls. He cares deeply about Campus Outreach, Cru, Navigators, Sav a Life, Lifeline Adoption, and Young Business Leaders. His aims to live by the words “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path (Prov 3:5-6).” What You Will Learn: Who is Joey Mure? What inspired Joey Mure to start his journey towards financial freedom? Russ Morgan is the Co-founder of Wealth Without Wall Street, an online community and coaching platform that empowers individuals to achieve financial freedom through passive income strategies outside traditional investments. After beginning his career as an investment advisor in 2004, he co-founded Wealth Without Wall Street in 2015 to challenge conventional financial paradigms. Known as "The Idea Guy," Russ is celebrated for his innovative problem-solving skills and passion for teaching. Beyond his professional endeavors, he is a dedicated family man and actively supports causes such as Campus Outreach and Young Business Leaders. In this episode… Are you stuck chasing financial freedom but unsure which path leads there fastest? Maybe you've heard about passive income, land flipping, or Infinite Banking, but the strategies sound either too complex or too risky. What if the key to unlocking consistent, recession-resistant cash flow is not just in the strategy but in knowing yourself? According to Russ Morgan, a seasoned financial educator and investor, true passive income starts with understanding your “Investor DNA.” He highlights how many people fail with passive income strategies because they chase what works for others instead of aligning investments with their own strengths and preferences. This alignment creates clarity and momentum. Russ also shares how unconventional strategies like land flipping can yield consistent monthly income with minimal involvement. Combined with infinite banking to reclaim liquidity and control, these approaches empower individuals to build wealth outside of volatile markets. In this episode of The Same Day Podcast, host Yoni Schmidt is joined by Russ Morgan, Co-founder of Wealth Without Wall Street, to talk about land flipping, infinite banking, and how to identify your Investor DNA. Russ explains why passive income still requires active thinking, how to structure your cash flow for freedom, and why he targets 200% of monthly income. He also gives advice for people stuck in the 9-to-5 grind.

In the winter of 2001, I was a sophomore at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. As a freshman I had become part of a ministry called Campus Outreach. Its theology was called “Reformed,” which I did not grow up with. In my teens, I heard talk about God being “sovereign,” but I had never wrestled with the extent of his sovereignty — that he was sovereign over all, over good and evil, over angels and demons, over sunny days and natural disasters, over my good deeds and my sin, and (most uncomfortably) sovereign over my own will and choices. But once I saw the verses, dozens of them (if not hundreds), I couldn't deny that the Bible taught that God's sovereignty was absolute, over all, no exceptions. But what I also knew from two decades of human life, and from dozens (if not hundreds) of verses, is that I was accountable. I had thoughts and feelings. I had a will and made real decisions that mattered and had consequences. So, how do I reconcile these two — not just my experience versus what the Bible says, but what the Bible says versus what the Bible says? So, that winter of 2001, a pastor from Minnesota, named John Piper, spoke at our Campus Outreach New Year's conference in Atlanta, and not long after that event, I got on desiringGod.org to look for more messages. There I listened to a sermon he had preached that Christmas Eve. And this one message put together for me, so clearly and memorably, how these major theological truths of God's sovereignty and my human responsibility come together in my everyday Christian life and experience. The sermon was on the end of Romans chapter 6 (verses 22–23), but at a key moment Piper flipped over to Philippians 2:12–13 to explain this real-life dynamic, and as he did so, lights went on for me one after another. So, 23 years later, it's personally significant for me to be assigned these verses, and I pray that for some in this room, new lights might go on like they did for me in those days. How the truth of God's sovereignty and his choices relates to my responsibility and my choices, in fighting against sin and for Christlikeness, doesn't all come together at once. Much of it is a lifetime journey. Yet, for me, there was a particular sermon, and a particular text — Philippians 2:12–13 — where new categories were created that have deeply affected my everyday life.Humbled and ExaltedLast Sunday we stood in awe at the foot of the mountain of Christ's accomplishment for us in verses 5–11. First, he chose to become man. He did not cling to the comforts of heaven, but he emptied himself of that privilege. Precisely because he was God, gracious and merciful, full of steadfast love and faithfulness, he took on our creatureliness and limitations and the pains and frustrations of our fallen world. His emptying himself was not an emptying of his deity, as if that were possible, but it was a taking, as verse 7 says. His emptying came through addition of humanity, not subtraction of deity. He…“emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”Then came that amazing “therefore” in verse 9,“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name . . . .”In the biblical pattern of self-humbling from Exodus to the Epistles, Jesus stands at the center as our greatest example: he humbled himself, and therefore God exalted him. Jesus went down, down, down: human, death, the cross. And his Father brought him up: up from the grave, up in the ascension, up to the very throne of heaven. So we walked through three truths, in Pastor Jonathan's sermon last week, about the example of Jesus.Which leads us right into verses 12–18, and how Paul turns from Jesus's obedience and his reward to ours. And so this morning we look at three truths about our following his example. Or: how we become like Jesus.1. We follow the one who obeyed and was rewarded. There is a second huge “therefore” in Philippians 2. The first one was verse 9. Jesus humbled himself; therefore God exalted him. Now, verse 12: in light of Jesus's self-humbling and God's exalting him, therefore . . .I can see at least two ways this “therefore” works in verse 12. One is the straightforward charge He is Lord, therefore obey. God has highly exalted Jesus, now his name is above every name, and at his name every knee should bow and every tongue confess he is Lord; therefore, Christians, obey. Simple as that. He is Lord; we are servants. He says it; we do it. Children obey their parents; servants obey their masters; and all the more, creatures obey your Creator, and Christians your Lord. But there's also another way this “therefore” works, as an appeal to desire, as a pattern and promise of reward. I say that because the word “obedient” just appeared in verse 8 (and “obey” in verse 12). Jesus was “obedient to the point of death,” and because he obeyed, he was rewarded. Therefore, Christians, obey, like Jesus, that you might be rewarded, like Jesus. Humble yourself, like he did, that you too might be exalted.Which is crazy countercultural for self-exalting sinners! We want to be exalted, so what do we do? Exalt ourselves. In our own minds, in our words and humble brags, in what we post online, in how we angle for opportunities. And God says to us in our folly, “No, sinners, I do the exalting. Exalt yourself, and I'll humble you. But humble yourself, and I will exalt you.”So, the therefore in verse 12 is an appeal to desire, and a profound glimpse into what it meant for Jesus to endure the cross “for the joy set before him.” As man, Jesus humbled himself, obeying to the point of death, by looking to the joy of being exalted by his Father. And so too for us as we obey him. Christian obedience is from sheer duty and force of will. We obey for the joy set before us.And Paul puts his own joy on display in verses 17–18. Jump down there:“Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering [this is his self-humbling obedience] upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”Paul calls the Philippians' obedience “the sacrificial offering of your faith.” This is like Romans 12:1: the Christian life of faith “as a living sacrifice” — God's people no longer offer slaughtered animals as sacrifices, as they did under the first covenant, but offer themselves, all they are, their whole lives, in obedience to him. This is what Paul is giving his life to: that Christians like the saints in Philippi, and like us, would be living sacrifices, obedient to Christ. And Paul, in prison in Rome for his labor, says to them, even if I die in this prison, I rejoice. The pursuit of joy got him into prison, and joy will be his if he never makes it out of prison — because he looks forward to the reward of being with Christ, and having worked for others' joy in Christ. And in this joy, Paul casts his work in self-humbling terms. The Philippians' lives of obedience are the main sacrifice, and his labor is just the drink offering, the side offering, the supplement to their healthy, obedient, Christians lives. So, first, like Paul, and like Jesus, we obey our Lord, in joy, anticipating reward. We follow the one who obeyed and was rewarded.2. We work out the salvation he worked for. Now, the rest of verse 12:“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling . . .”So, the obedience that Christ, through Paul, is calling for here is “work out your own salvation.” I realize that sounds like nails on a chalkboard for some ears. If so, perhaps I could just warn you: this might feel uncomfortable for a few minutes. Remember we're praying for biblical categories. And to get there, we may need to sit in the challenge of this “work out your own salvation.” It's in the Bible. And this is a good translation. The Greek doesn't fix our discomfort, but might only make us cringe a little bit more. What if we said “produce your own salvation,” or “give rise to your own salvation,” or “grind out your own salvation”?As we sit in this tension, it's okay to remember Christ's obedience on the frontend and underneath — and in just a few minutes, we'll see that we have even more help on the backend. But we need to linger here. Just because there's help in front and back doesn't mean our lives in the middle aren't real. We need to stay here, in the call and dignity of the Christian life to be, to think, to feel, to will, to act. God is sovereign, and we are responsible. This word for “work out” is a typical word for “work” but with an intensifying prefix. The kind of work we're getting at here is not just overflow. Some work feels effortless. But this work means expending effort. It's the kind of work that requires effort to move inward desires into outward acts. In other places, this word is translated “produce” or “accomplish” or “perform.”So, this is not just overflow. It requires counting, reckoning, considering (as in verses 3, 5, and 6). There is effort to be given; energy to be expended; work to be done. “Work out your salvation,” Paul says. Not “work for” — Jesus uniquely worked for our salvation in verses 5–11 — but now we “work it out.”An important question to ask at this point is “salvation from what?” Paul implies the Philippians need deliverance, but from what? Well, what's clearly at stake in chapter 2, going back to 1:27, is their unity (their fellowship, their relationships in the church). Paul says he longs to hear that they “are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.” And 2:2: “complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” He's saying that because at present they're not that. Then verse 3: “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit.” Note the two specific sins from which the Philippians and we need deliverance: selfish ambition and conceit. And Paul has more specifics to give in verse 14: “Do all things without grumbling or disputing.” Okay, so now we have at least four specific sins from which Paul says to “work out your salvation.” Want it, will it, act it, produce it. Christ died to save you from grumbling, from constant complaining and criticizing and scoffing and wallowing. He died to deliver you from petty disputes. So, trust him and don't grumble. Trust him and be free from disputing. The new category this leads to is this: the Christian life is both gift and duty. Fighting sin is both a gift from God and a duty we act. Increasing holiness is both gift and duty. It is a gift of grace we receive from Jesus, and the way we receive a grace that involves our own thoughts and desires and actions is by having the thoughts and desires and doing the actions. That is, living out the gift, or working out your salvation.Look over to Philippians 3:12. Two of the best texts for getting this dynamic of the Christian life as both gift and duty are right here in Philippians. So, first 2:12–13. Now 3:12:“Not that I have already obtained this [resurrection to eternal life] or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.”This is so important in getting the order right between God's working and ours. Paul says, “I press on to make it my own” — I count, I will, I act, I choose righteousness, I fight sin, I press on — why? “Because Christ Jesus has made me his own.” Mark this: I don't become his by pressing on. Rather, because I am his, because he already took hold of me, I strive and strain and press on. He worked for my salvation. Now I work it out over sin. (Other key texts that show this gift-and-duty dynamic: Hebrews 13:20–21; Romans 15:18; 1 Corinthians 15:10.)The Christian life is grace from beginning to end. Some graces we receive instead of our effort and action (justification) and some graces we receive as our effort and action.Which leads us to verse 13, but let me first try to make this more practical. Let me take you back to my time at Furman University. Now it's the fall of 2002, my senior year, and I'm trying to figure out what to do after graduation. And I am awash in anxiety. I didn't remember being so anxious in my life before then, and I don't remember being as anxious since. So, I needed deliverance from anxiety. So what do I do? Just wait? How do you seek to be free from oppressive anxiety when God is sovereign and you are responsible? As one who is justified by faith in Jesus, how do I work out my salvation? First, I need truth to work with. I need a specific word to believe. So I found three biblical promises about anxiety:Matthew 6:34,“Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”1 Peter 5:6–7,“Humble yourselves . . . under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”Philippians 4:67,“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”So I printed them out, posted them next to my bed, and reviewed them every morning when I woke up, and every night when I went to sleep. And (with Christ before me and his Spirit in me), I worked out the grace of my deliverance from anxiety. God gave me the gift of deliverance from the dominance of anxiety in that season. And that doesn't mean I don't still fight anxiety as it comes in new ways in new times and seasons of life. But I know how to fight: recognize it, address it with promises of reward, pray for help, and act.So whether it's sinful anxiety, selfish ambition and conceit, grumbling and disputing, or sinful anger or lust or greed, work out the deliverance Christ has worked for you. Don't presume that God will defeat your sins while you're passive. And don't presume to fight sin on our own. Look to the sovereign Christ, trust his promises, pray for his help, and act the miracle you seek to have from him.And just to comment very quickly on verses 15–16: I think Paul has in mind the relationship between unity in the church and witness in the world like he did in 1:27–28. There he said that our “standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel” leads to the church “not [being] frightened in anything by your opponents” — and this is “a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation.” In working out our salvation against the relationship-killing sins of selfish ambition, conceit, grumbling, and disputing, we come to stand out “in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.” Unified in Jesus, we “shine as lights in the world.” How? “Holding fast to the word of life,” that is, the message about true life, eternal life — the life and death of Jesus in place of our death to give us life. So, if ever you find yourself discouraged about the “crooked and twisted generation” in which you find yourself, remember two truths from Philippians 2: (1) this is nothing new for Christianity (this is how it usually is in this age) and (2) grumbling and disputing are not the Christian response. But exactly the opposite. The Christian response is this: hold fast to our word of life, work out our salvation from grumbling and disputing, and shine as lights in the world, not as more of the same darkness. What about that last phrase in v. 12, “with fear and trembling”? Now our third and final truth.3. We have His Spirit at work in us.We finish with the end of verse 12 and with verse 13: “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”What in the world could Paul mean here by “with fear and trembling.” Perhaps “fear and trembling” only sounds negative in your ears. Fear and trembling, yikes. How about with hope and joy? Why fear and trembling?Scripture has a broader vision for inward fear and outward trembling than modern people. Throughout the Bible, “fear and trembling” is what wise, in-touch, healthy humans do when they find themselves in the presence of God almighty. Like Moses at Mount Sinai, as we saw in Hebrews 12:21: “I tremble with fear.” And Paul talks how the Corinthians received Titus, as a messenger from Christ, “with fear and trembling” (2 Corinthians 7:15).Or perhaps most instructive of all is the way the Gospel of Mark ends, with the women who found the tomb empty and heard from the angel, “He has risen; he is not here.” Mark 16:8: “They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them.”Or, as Matthew 28:8 reports,“They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy.”“Fear and trembling” is not only the response of someone taken aback by great horror, but also of someone struck with great joy. It's the response of a believing heart in the presence of God himself — and it's the appropriate response of a Christian who learns that God himself has come to dwell in me.Verse 13 provides, essentially, threefold confidence for us as we expend energy and effort to obey our Lord and live the Christian life. So, as we close, let me turn verse 13 and address it to you.First, brothers and sisters in Christ, you have God in you! What an awesome thing to have the Holy Spirit, poured out on us, sent into our hearts, dwelling in us, leading us, working in us. You are not on your own to fight against sin and for Christlikeness. You have God in you! This is no standard joy. This is cause for fear and trembling.Second, he is in you not only to will but even to work! God works in us to (will and) work our work. He gives us new desires and willing, and even then doesn't leave us to ourselves. He is in us to prompt, to lead, to empower, to execute our working out those holy desires through the exertion of effort.Third, all this stands on the rock of God's own joy, his delight, his good pleasure. He is not reluctant in helping us fight sin and pursue Christlikeness. He is happy to do it, thrilled to do it. He delights to do it. He works in us, in our willing, in our working, for his good pleasure. We work with the grain of God's own joy when we work out our deliverance from sin.So, we close with this question: What sin or sins came to mind this morning in our time of silent confession? Or, what do you most often confess week after week? Brothers and sisters, don't just say it again, move on, continue in sin, and make empty confession again and again. Work out your salvation. Act the miracle. With Jesus before you and beneath you, and his Spirit in you and through you — hemmed in on every side by his grace — work out your salvation. Will it, work it, act it, do it — with prayerful dependence in every step.Jesus Willed and WorkedWhat makes possible our having the Holy Spirit at work in us to will and work, is that first the Spirit was at work in Christ to will and to work. How he worked, for the joy set before him, is an example we follow. How he worked, by the Spirit, is imitable. But what he accomplished at the cross for us is inimitable. At this Table, we do not mainly remember Jesus as our example but as the one who worked for us in a way in which we could not work for ourselves.

ABOUT | RUSS MORGAN: Wealth Without Wall Street's founder and partner, Russ Morgan, is known as “The Idea Guy.” Russ began his professional career as an investment advisor in 2004 after graduating from Auburn University — a slight foray from 10-year-old Russ' dream of becoming a professional baseball pitcher. Russ started IBC in 2009 and eventually found Wealth Without Wall Street in 2015. Russ' mother was an enormous inspiration for him growing up. As a single mother with two young children, she took a rigorous, accelerated track through college while working multiple jobs, all with the goal of bettering her children's lives. When he's not working, you can wave to Russ on a boat at the lake, pulling his kids around on a tube. And on Sunday mornings, he's probably rushing to church with his family … only 10 minutes late. Russ' creativity, fresh ideas, and knack for problem-solving are indispensable assets to his role at Wealth Without Wall Street. Russ would describe himself as competitive, creative, and passionate; his colleagues would likely add that he is helpful and abundant. Russ hopes to be remembered as an innovator who loves to teach others, and he has a goal to one day serve in the mission field. Finishing the book is another near-term goal. Campus Outreach teaches on how to read your Bible.
In this episode, I speak with my friends, Fr. Thomas Joseph White, OP and Fr. Jonah Teller, OP about the relationship between art, truth, and beauty, sacred and profane music, how music might be integral to religious life, and whether the banjo is beautiful. Long time listeners will remember Thomas Joseph from our very first episode on Flannery O'Connor, where we discuss what she meant by calling herself a "Hillbilly Thomist;" and since I consider myself something of a Hillbilly Thomist myself, I thought it would be fun to start off season five with a lighthearted conversation with two members of my favorite folk and bluegrass band, The Hillbilly Thomists. Fr. Thomas Joseph White is the Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical University of St. Thomas (Angelicum) in Rome. He is the author of various books and articles including Wisdom in the Face of Modernity: A Study in Thomistic Natural Theology (Sapientia Press, 2011), The Incarnate Lord, A Thomistic Study in Christology (The Catholic University of America Press, 2015) Exodus (Brazos Press, 2016), The Light of Christ: An Introduction to Catholicism (Catholic University Press, 2017), and The Trinity: On the Nature and Mystery of the One God (Catholic University Press, 2022). He is co-editor of the journal Nova et Vetera, a Distinguished Scholar of the McDonald Agape Foundation, and a member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas. Fr. Jonah Teller, O.P., is a friar of the Dominican Province of Saint Joseph. He holds a licentiate in sacred theology from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. At present, he lives in D.C. and works as Coordinator for Campus Outreach at the Thomistic Institute, an organization that exists to promote Catholic truth in our contemporary world by strengthening the intellectual formation of Christians at universities, in the Church, and in the wider public square. He is also the third-best guitarist in The Hillbilly Thomists.

Hunter lives in Cartersville with his wife and two sons and a third son is on the way.Hunter attended a church youth group. In seventh grade, he went on a youth trip with his friends and all of them were “giving their life to the Lord” so Hunter did, too. He thought he was saved from that point on, but now he sees that he wasn't. In middle school and high school, Hunter walked a path of destruction, drinking, and having unhealthy relationships. After surgeries for sports injuries, he got addicted to pain pills and sold narcotics.Hunter talks about the solid upbringing in faith and church attendance that his parents gave him. But in eighth grade, he got into a relationship and started partaking in unhealthy things that were not honoring God. Looking back, he had no conviction of faith. He had just said the words at a youth camp, following his friends. In 11th grade, Hunter suffered a broken kneecap playing in the first baseball game of the year and had surgery for it. It crushed him. Right after the surgery, Hunter got addicted to pain pills. After a year of physical recovery, Hunter went back to play baseball in his senior year. Over four years, he had elbow surgery, four knee surgeries, and ankle reconstruction. When Hunter was in an unhealthy relationship starting in eighth grade, he stayed away from home as much as possible. He hid his relationship from his parents. If his parents had found out, he says he would have been embarrassed, but that exposure would have corrected his behavior quickly.Hunter shares how his addiction to pain pills occurred. He had broken up from his relationship, he had had multiple sports injuries, preventing him from fulfilling his childhood dream of a sports career, and pain pills gave him a momentary escape from reality. After high school, Hunter received a full baseball scholarship from Shorter University in Rome, Georgia. In the first month of Fall practice in 2011, Hunter blew out his other kneecap. When Hunter was injured, he told his coach that with his history of surgeries, he couldn't play anymore. Hunter finished the school year and then transferred to Georgia Highlands and lived at home. After two years, he got an associate's degree and transferred to West Georgia.Hunter talks about getting saved. When he transferred from Shorter to Georgia Highlands, a friend of his came over and invited him to a Campus Outreach event through Georgetown College in Kentucky. There he heard the gospel again. As Hunter was sitting in church, a pastor shared Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.” (KJV) Until then, Hunter had thought that if his good works outweighed his bad works, he was good to go. When he heard that scripture and remembered Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (KJV), in the blink of an eye, Hunter felt the Lord pluck him out of darkness and place him into the light. That changed his entire perspective on life. Hunter found that West Georgia had a Campus Outreach, the same program that his friend had invited him to in Kentucky. Hunter transferred to West Georgia. He found a great ministry and a lot of friends that he still has. He entered the business administration program for a bachelor's degree. He was in that program for two years and it was pivotal in setting him up for his career.Hunter tells of his father's history as a sales executive for a company that erected steel structures for billboards, and how he started a company for that. Hunter tells how he decided to go into sales after hearing a guest lecturer at college speak about a career in sales. He liked the billboard business but instead of selling steel like his father, he chose to get into the ad space side of the business.Hunter tells how he started selling his pain pills in college. A player approached him who knew somebody who would buy them at a price per pill. He did this for a few months, raising the price when he was selling out. He cared more about how much he could get per pill than he did about taking the pills. Finally, his doctor refused to prescribe more. He walked away from selling and that was about the time he moved back home with his parents. Hunter feels the Lord had already started to work in his life and remove the incentive for him to be selling pills.Hunter thinks that his “sales” experience with the pills may have helped him to succeed in sales. As Hunter was considering a sales career, he discussed it with his mom and dad. After he had gotten saved, he started to appreciate who they were and what they did for him. His Heavenly Father's influence on him had a huge impact on his relationship with his parents. Hunter graduated in May 2016 and took a job at Southwire in Carrollton. That summer, Hunter's dad passed away. Hunter moved back home again to help his mom run the several businesses his dad had left behind. After six months, he wanted to go back to Carrollton, but the opportunity was gone. His dad's friend Josh, in Cartersville, who ran a billboard company, renamed his company Horton Outdoor in honor of Hunter's father and allowed Hunter to get into adspace sales in the billboard industry with him. Hunter's first job at Horton Outdoor was Account Executive, cold-calling on customers. Hunter describes the subliminal effect of billboards. McDonald's does 98% of its advertising on billboards. You know when the McRib is back because you see it on a billboard.Hunter tells how “playing dumb” as a new sales executive got him in the door with decision-makers at first. When he had more experience, he used a hook to capture attention, asking the business owner if their advertising dollars were providing the results they had expected. Then he asked for a little bit of time to show how he could help them. He wanted to get the owner to sit with him and see eye-to-eye. Hunter says sales is about relationships, not products or services. The biggest thing that helped Hunter right out of the gate was being told “No.” On his first day of cold-calling, he got told “No,” every time. That night he was wondering if that was how he wanted to spend his life. Being told “No” is not fun, but it made him pivot and think. Over time, that has helped in many ways besides sales, including his relationships. Hunter believes being told “No” helps us mentally in a way that the Lord uses for good. we need to be told “No” way more often. When Hunter's parents had told him “No,” he would disobey and do it anyway. It doesn't work that way in the “real world”!Jim and Hunter unpack the “real world” to mean accepting adult responsibility for your actions and life. When you become a man, things affect you differently than when you're a boy. After getting told “No” all day, the next morning, he decided that he would do this job for three months, the best that he could, getting after it as hard as he could, calling on as many people as he could, and see if he could make a career of it. If not, he would pivot to do something else. With persistence and discipline, slowly but surely, there were a lot more yeses than there were noes. Sales is a numbers game. Every person can't tell you “No.” Early on in his career, Hunter wanted to do everything “Hunter's way.” It wasn't working for him, so he called on a list of men his father had known; business partners, customers, and as many people in the billboard space that could advise him with their decades of experience. After a week or two of talking to all his dad's associates, Hunter felt ready to go forward. Hunter recalls two traits that his new mentors exemplified. They shared instructions and set an example. Every one of them shared instructions in humility, admitting where they had gotten it wrong. Every one of them listened to Hunter and asked him questions to understand his need.Hunter talks about meeting his wife right after his dad passed away. They started as friends and got into a relationship at the time Hunter got into the billboard industry. She encouraged him, listened to him, and gave him advice that he didn't want to hear at times. She was the most helpful thing in Hunter's life as he was learning more about what it meant to be a Christian, to mourn and grieve the loss of his father, and to face his responsibilities. They weren't married yet but she was a huge helper to him. In the summer of 2017, Hunter proposed to her and they got married in January 2018. Their third child is expected in January along with their fifth anniversary. She provides the platform for Hunter to be able to go out and do his work well.Jim acknowledges being a Godly stay-at-home mother as the most difficult job in the world and as the hardest-working humans that have walked the planet.Hunter shares how he developed resilience and did not quit. He decided early that he wanted experience to be his teacher. He learned to sell through cold-calling and sending hand-written letters to businesspeople. Jim remarks that hand-written letters are missing from today's society. Hunter knew that to get the success that other people weren't getting, he need to do things that other people weren't doing. He shares some examples of tactics he used to make contact with business owners. Jim comments on Hunter's creativity and determination to devise and try new methodologies and asks how that confidence applied to his marriage and parenting. Hunter quickly realized in marriage and as a father that he had a lot of room to grow. He got married after about a year in the industry and he had seen a lot of success from the techniques he was using. His ego told him he had marriage figured out, too. After several arguments early in his marriage, he realized he had to do something different for it to work. It was the same for parenting. He knew he was wrong in his first approach and he credits conviction from the Lord for setting a new direction for him. Listening to his wife, hearing God's word, spending time in prayer, and listening to people of faith helped Hunter. He prays all the time that the Lord would convict him and bring him to his knees so that he can be a better husband and father. The biggest development in Hunter's career came in October of 2021 when his boss sold the company to Trailhead Media. Hunter had to decide if he was going to stay with the larger company and go from an inventory of 600 billboards to 5,000 billboards, including travel to the Carolinas. It would have meant more money and less time at home. He chose to be a Godly husband and father. He decided to stay at home with his family, take a leap of faith, and start a business. He reveals the conversations he had with his wife about it. She told him over and over that she trusts him and knows he will make the right decision. He spent a lot of time in prayer and seeking wise counsel. Hunter talked to Jim about it and other friends and businessmen. The more conversations he had, and even feeling that the Lord would support him in either decision, he realized that this was the time of his life when he would have the best opportunity to start a business. It's going on a year, and Hunter says it's going well.Hunter has learned some lessons in entrepreneurship. The hardest thing has been turning from a sales executive to running a business. He quickly realized that there was so much more to a business than he ever imagined. For the first couple of months, all he did was learn. He wanted to be out making money, but he couldn't do that effectively or successfully until he learned the key parts of running a business. The paperwork is hard, but what has been easy is the selling he has been taught to do over the previous five years. His growth and development along the way have prepared him for where he is now. Hunter encourages the listeners who are salesmen to be disciplined and stay persistent. Stay true to who you are and do the same thing over and over until you get to the point where you may have to change it. Instead of giving up at the first hard thing, give yourself a commitment to do it as hard as you can for three months to see if you succeed. You'll be able to tell in that time if you're cut out for this or need to pivot to a different career. Jim directs the conversation to the family. Hunter talks about discipline, Growing up, Hunter was spanked and slapped a lot because his behavior was incorrect. He learned what was wrong and right. Now, Hunter does not see many fathers discipline their children. He doesn't see nearly as many fathers present in their families as when he grew up. That's the biggest decline he has seen and he sees that sets up children for failure.Jim agrees that the presence of a man changes the behavior of a boy.In the time leading up to getting engaged, and then married, Hunter spent a lot of time thinking back on how his father was as a husband, and he read a lot of scripture on what it is to be a husband. Anytime today that Hunter has any questions about what it means to be a Godly husband, he goes to the scriptures. He remembers how his dad led his mom in a Godly way. He talked with other men who are examples. Jim and Hunter discuss what methodologies they saw in their dads that they affirm for their work as husbands. Hunter noticed that his father and mother always communicated well with each other. Applying it to his marriage, Hunter will often ask his wife what is he doing well in their marriage and what is he doing poorly; what are some ways in which he can be a better husband and a better father; and ways in which he can grow in who he is. He feels that if he can ask questions to open up communications in their marriage, they will thrive. He says that husbands and wives don't communicate enough. Jim affirms Hunter's practice of asking his wife what he does well in their marriage, so he can continue to honor his wife with those things. Jim asks Hunter to share one or two things he is doing well in his marriage that he would like to pass on to the audience. Hunter talks about providing, not just financially so his wife can stay home with their children, but providing conversations at the dinner table, prayer together before bed, times of entertainment and exercise, and different things to do as a family. He is always asking himself how the family can intentionally interact with one another to strengthen their marriage and family. It can be going out to eat, playing at the playground, playing tag in the yard, and spending time together in prayer. Hunter intentionally spends one-on-one time with his boys. His older son can have a conversation with him and that has allowed Hunter to have a better understanding of how his son views the family and the world. Hunter tells how his faith in the Bible affects the way he is as a husband and father. The biggest way is having a Godly community around the couple and family, his faith in Jesus Christ, and what He has done in Hunter's life. Godly community influences their marriage and family. Prayer, reading God's word, and Bible studies are very helpful, but surrounding yourselves with Godly people who can pray over you and encourage you is the best influence. Hunter suggests how listeners can begin some of the disciplines he practices. If you are hesitant to commit to something time-consuming, start by singing worship music alone in your car. That discipline, over time, will flow into other spiritual disciplines.Hunter would want people to remember what marks him as a man by the way he loves his wife and boys. He wants people to say Hunter Horton was a Godly husband and a Godly father. Look at his marriage and look at his boys. He also wants to be marked as someone who is humble and doesn't want any credit but can do much for the Kingdom of God and the community he lives in without any recognition or praise. He admits that's his biggest struggle so he is working on it. He credits all his success to God. Jim thanks Hunter for making himself transparent on this podcast and sharing his inspiring example.
