“When you lose everything, you realise what you actually need to live a good life.” In this episode, Michael Dargie welcomes husband and wife duo Tomer and Anastasia, Ukrainian immigrants who rebuilt their lives and careers from scratch after arriving in Canada. As war displaced their lives, their response was bold: uproot, relocate, and start anew in a country where they knew no one. The conversation follows their incredible journey from fleeing conflict to becoming proud business owners in Calgary, Alberta. This episode is sponsored by my new book BRANDJITSU, helping you find, shape, and share your story with the world. Anastasia opens up about the personal toll of war, the strength required to adapt, and how she eventually found her voice through photography and design. Together, they launched Honest Agency—a branding and design firm dedicated to authentic storytelling and helping other businesses stand out. Their journey isn't just about survival. I recorded this podcast with Anson Frericks, former Anheuser-Busch Executive, about a month ago before Trump took office and began putting the final nails in the coffin of “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion,” (DEI) at the federal level. But, even before that, we saw the decline and predicted the ultimate downfall of DEI initiatives with very notable cases such as the Bud Light fiasco and subsequent boycott. Now, with Target, Amazon, Harley-Davidson, and more notable companies are dismantling these dangerous and destructive ideologies. Today, Anson and I talk about, why we've seen such a huge cultural shift against these policies, why companies truly started these policies in the first place (it wasn't out of the goodness of their hearts), how consumers can take back culture through their purchasing power, and why DEI needs to die once and for all. “So what we found out about the Flying Dutchman, for example, they've been in business for forty years and they simply didn't know how to grow. But one thing I'd found out when I went to the original Flying Dutchman store is that people like to gather there, but they didn't have anywhere inside the store to gather and sit down. Everyone sat down on the sidewalk and hung out outside. So that's what gave us the idea, why don't we have it we could build the community inside and everyone did feel like family, and it was a place that everyone could actually say hi to one another, right? So, it was taking what was existing but magnifying it as an actual location for people to gather. – Howard Lim This episode is the second half of my conversation with innovator, author, and award-winning brand architect Howard Lim as we discuss the challenges of audio-based SEO, how insurance companies have paved the way for audio branding, and figuring out your brand's favorite music. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:00) - Exploring Audio Branding and SEO TrendsThe second half of our conversation starts with a closer look at Howard's book Authentic Branding and how web design has evolved since the days of Adobe Flash. “It made a big difference as far as the overall experience,” he says about those early, more audio-focused sites. “Now websites, they're so flat as far as introducing it to your senses, because now you're just using your visual sense.” We talk about the ongoing challenge of tying SEO and audio together, and we discuss Howard's approach to helping companies find the right sound for their brand. “One of the questions I ask,” he explains, “when I'm in a strategy session is what if the brand listened to music? What music would listen to and why?”(0:09:55) - The Power of Sound in BrandingHoward tells us more about his work with such companies as WSS and Flying Dutchman and shares some of the success stories in building their brands. “It expanded them,” he recalls his work with Flying Dutchman. “I think it was three years to five franchises, where [before] they couldn't grow for forty years. So it was really capturing a brand essence.” He shares his approach to building a sense of place as well as product when it comes to branding, and how sound helps shape our environment. “When they turn on that background music,” he says, “it just shifts the energy, it shifts the environment that you feel like you're experiencing [into] something that has a lot more richness to it.”(0:20:17) - Creating Stronger Brands with SoundOur discussion comes to a close as we talk about how listeners can get in touch with Howard, and an online brand assessment that he's offering, included in the links below. He also tells us more about what first inspired him to write about branding. “The reason why I was writing a book,” he explains, “is because nobody wanted to explain how to create a brand. They would write about it, but they wouldn't give you examples of how to create a brand. And so that's when I said, oh my goodness, this is a perfect...
This week, our host Brandi Starr is joined by Emmanuel Rose, CEO of Strategic E Marketing. Meet Emmanuel Rose, an industry thought leader with over 15 years of experience running a full-service digital marketing agency. Emmanuel's expertise spans lead generation, branding, advertising, and the integration of AI into marketing strategies. He's also the author of "Authenticity Marketing to Generation Z,” a guide to resonating with this digital-first generation. In this episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi and Emmanuel tackle the pressing issue of turnover in large companies and delve into effective strategies to manage these transitions. They explore the natural factors behind turnover, the role of leaders as philosophical pillars of organizations, and how to manage their departure effectively. Emmanuel also sheds light on marketing to Generation Z, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and short-form video content. Brandi and Emmanuel uncover actionable strategies for adapting to changing consumer behaviors and the increasing influence of Gen Z in the workforce. Tune in for insightful discussion and practical takeaways to bolster your marketing efforts in today's dynamic landscape. Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1 Managing Turnover in Large Organizations [08:12] Emmanuel Rose discusses that "transition and turnover are natural parts of organizational life, often due to aging out or philosophical differences. Leaders are the primary philosophical sources in organizations, so their departure must be managed rather than overly worried about." Brandi Starr agrees, emphasizing that "leaders leaving doesn't mean crisis but a chance for growth and realignment." Topic #2 Marketing Strategies for Generation Z [15:34] Emmanuel Rose delves into the nuances of Gen Z marketing, noting, "Generation Z will comprise 27% of the workforce by 2025, and they crave authentic, digital-first marketing with short-form content due to their limited attention spans." He explains the challenges, "This generation's slower progression through life stages and reliance on parental support require marketers to rethink traditional approaches." Rose adds, "In B2B contexts, marketers must consider Gen Z's distinct decision-making styles. The contemporary B2B sale involves 6 hours of engagement and 32 touchpoints." Topic #3 The Power of Authenticity and Transparency [28:45] Emmanuel Rose underscores the demand for brand authenticity, stating, "Younger generations who grew up with public figures like Kylie Jenner demand authenticity and transparency in branding and messaging." Brandi Starr highlights the cultural shift, pointing out, "Personal and professional lives are more integrated today, and maintaining a professional yet personal digital presence is crucial for leaders. It's about building a personal brand that is both engaging and trustworthy." What's One Thing You Can Do Today Emanuel's 'One Thing' is to become a podcast guest to discuss your company values and offerings. "Position yourself as a 'social CEO' and enhance your brand visibility. By sharing your insights and values on relevant podcasts, you can create authentic connections and showcase your leadership in a personal yet professional manner. This strategy not only builds your personal brand but also humanizes your company, making it more relatable and trustworthy to all generations, especially Gen Z." Take that first step today by identifying podcasts that align with your industry and audience. Reach out to hosts, pitch your story, and start establishing that authentic presence in the digital world. Your leadership and voice can make a significant impact, driving both personal and organizational growth. Buzzword Banishment Emmanuel's Buzzword to Banish is the term "viral.” He wants to banish it because, in his words, “I think it's overused and misapplied, especially in B2B contexts.” Emmanuel believes that the term "viral" often sets unrealistic expectations and detracts from more meaningful and sustainable marketing efforts.
