Hi! Jamie Wind Whitmarsh here! This episode is is pretty exciting, as I get to start my series of guest interviews with Dr. Tommy Dobbs, Assistant Professor of Percussion at University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Tommy and I have been best friends for a long time, after becoming roommates during our time in grad school at Florida State University. Tommy has done a lot of things, including a recent clinic at the Midwest convention - but I'm more interested in the other things we talk about! The music is the Florida State University Percussion Ensemble performing my work 'NAILS!!!'. This recording (which I was fortunate to play steel pan on) was released on their third CD - 'Florida State University, Volume Three: 10 Windows'. Recording this was laborious, as the piece is pretty nuts, and I am infinitely grateful to the wonderful people that made this happen - Chase Banks, Sabrina Peterson, Ben Fraley, Nick Stevens, Glenda Lopez, Andrew Bockman, Catherine Cole, Justin Alexander, Tennison Watts, and John Parks.

Edmond native Tyler Williams was dismissed from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith basketball team Aug. 16 for what he and his family allege was racial discrimination by head coach Jim Boone because of Williams' hair. Williams and his parents met with Boone that day, and Williams recorded the conversation upon which their allegations are based. Williams provided the audio of the meeting to The Oklahoman.
Welcome back to the “Neuroscience Meets SEL Podcast” this is Andrea Samadi. This interview will be broadcast on YouTube as well as on the regular podcast channel, so be sure to look for the YouTube link in the show notes if you would like to view the video.Today we have a very special guest. She is someone who has helped us at Achieveit360.com with ideas, video editing, student voice and customized art work since 2015. If you have a copy of the Level Up book, she’s the teen artist on the back cover who designed the original cover of the book for a school administrator who requested a customized version for his school and you can also see more about her story in the history and testimonial section. She was involved in creating the name of the book and program, Level Up, and the videos in the program, all with the teen in mind. She learned how to take action on her ideas at an early age, without any limits in her mind, and we are so excited to share her most recent news. She just accepted a 4 year, all paid, prestigious leadership scholarship at the University of AR Fort Smith and begins this adventure this week! Welcome Sam. Can you give us an example of when you FIRST started to use your voice as a young teen, and the results that you created by staying true to yourself and developing your strengths/passions/talents with your artwork?Looking back now, what skills would you say you learned as a teen that helped you with the success you’ve attained with you most recent achievement? What advice do you have for other students as they are navigating through HS to stay focused on the end result vs drama that can be a part of this time period? What tips do you have for students who would like to apply for a scholarship like you did? Where do they begin? How do you ever find out about scholarships like this? How about parents of teens? How can we help our kids be more successful? What should we do more of/less of?What about secondary school educators? How can they help their students be more successful? What has winning this scholarship been like for you? How did it feel when you first got the news? What are you learning there? What will this year look like for you? What types of courses/programs will you receive that are different than a typical 4-year student? (Extensive Team Building, and other?)Where do you see yourself AFTER your scholarship? What are you most excited about learning? Is there anything that you think is important that we have not covered yet about your journey to get to this point?Thank you for taking the time out of your day to share your story with us. We are thrilled to see the results that you have created for yourself and know that this is only the beginning. You are destined for a very bright future. Well done.

John McFarland is the former CEO of a Fortune 500 company and current board member of Weldon, Williams, and Lick. He credits his ongoing record of success to the people around him and the leadership principles he practices. In this episode John shares his rules for highly effective leadership. - How effective leaders define reality for their team. - Why effective leaders create simple goals and repeat them often. - How effective leaders create value systems based on honesty, integrity, and fairness. - How effective leaders don’t let ego get in the way – theirs or someone else’s. - Why they are realistic, optimistic, honest, and always faithful to the team. - Why they don’t blame others for their failures and always credit the team for their success. - How they effectively criticize a team member. - Why effective leaders understand life is more than reaching goals – It is about reaching potential. And many more valuable pieces of wisdom. McFarland began his career with Baldor part time while in his first year of college at Westark College (now the University of Arkansas Fort Smith) in 1970. During his nearly 42-year career at Baldor, he held a number of positions in marketing, sales, and administration including Vice President of International Sales, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, and finally President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. Over this period, sales increased from $21 million in 1970 to $2.1 billion in 2011. The company was profitable in every year. Baldor Electric Company was a publicly-traded company (BEZ) from 1976 until being acquired by ABB Ltd of Zurich, Switzerland in 2011. During its time as a public company, the value of its stock grew at a compounded annual rate of approximately 19%. McFarland led the integration effort for Baldor until retirement. During McFarland’s career the company made approximately 15 acquisitions. McFarland negotiated and led the integration on 5 of these including Reliance Electric Company, an acquisition that more than doubled the company’s sales, profits, employees, and number of facilities.
