This week we talk about how to work with teachers who may not want to change in the way that you want them to change. Things that bring us joy this week: Thunderbolts* (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt20969586/) Never Split the Difference:: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/123857637) by Chris Voss Intro/Outro Music: Notice of Eviction by Legally Blind (https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Legally_Blind)
This week, I'm thrilled to welcome Paul Wheat, a dedicated 55-year-old triathlete who exemplifies what it means to be a High Performance Human. For Paul, high performance transcends athletic excellence; it encompasses all aspects of life, including sleep, nutrition, exercise, relationships, and mental health. The beauty of this journey is that you don't need to be a top-tier athlete to excel in these areas. Paul's transformative journey began in 2020 when he joined my SWAT Inner Circle after experimenting with a complimentary 12-week plan amid the COVID pandemic. The structured approach not only challenged him but also revealed the vital connections between fitness, nutrition, sleep, and work habits. Like many, Paul was once caught in the cycle of stress and fatigue from constant travel as a manager. However, he took proactive steps by applying training principles from SWAT, incorporating the 80:20 Pareto principle, and catalyzing a substantial transformation in both his personal life and professional environment. One of Paul's standout achievements has been the establishment of a workplace culture that encourages his team to maintain a healthy work-life balance, limiting work to eight hours a day. This impactful change has led to enhanced productivity and notably reduced staff turnover. Over the past five years, Paul has made impressive strides in his athletic performance, significantly improving his 70.3 Ironman time by 75 minutes—down from 6:45 to 5:30. Additionally, he has shed 19 kg, proudly stating that he achieved this by “cleaning up what I eat, understanding that processed foods aren't real food, and being more active.” If you're inspired to embark on a lifestyle transformation in 2025, Paul's journey is sure to motivate you! In this episode, we'll explore: The lifestyle changes Paul implemented and their impact on his health. How these changes elevated his triathlon performance. The process of integrating healthy habits within his work team. The positive effects of these workplace changes on overall performance. Paul's top three pieces of advice for anyone looking to start a similar journey. Join us for an enlightening conversation that could kickstart your own path to high performance! Paul doesn't do social media so you can't follow him but if you'd like to get a feel for how he has upped his game he recommends the following books: Ultra-Processed People:The Definitive #1 Bestseller You Need to Understand Ultra-Processed Food by Chris can Tulleken. Two Life Themes Intertwine to Build Avanti Body Franchise. Terri Simpson, Founder and CEO at Avanti Body, and Andrea Dobkin, President of Franchise Development, join us today on The Franchise Woman podcast. Terri talks about her life theme of paradigm shifts. She thought she wanted to be a DJ … until she did it. Her life in radio was not for naught as she went on to work with Rush Limbaugh and owning several radio stations. Andrea Dobkin's life theme comes from the book: Love Yourself as if Your Life Depended on It, by Kamal Ravikant. This concept of loving yourself was not one discussed, encouraged or modeled by her mother or other female role models. Both Terri & Andrea encountered health issues which forced them to make a paradigm shift and begin to love themselves as if their life dependent on it … because it truly did. Listen in to this insightful interview with Terri Simpson and Andrea Dobkin.

Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Contact Info Website: www.finelevate.com Most Influential Person My CPA (A Mentor) Effect On Emotions I can be an intense and critical person. The best thing about mindfulness, for me, is similar to when a speaker doesn't hear themselves say “um.” The first step is to hear yourself say it, so you can eventually remove it from your vocabulary. Mindfulness works the same way with emotions. The first step is recognizing in the moment that you're being intense. Once you master that, you can hopefully catch it right before it happens. The real breakthrough comes when you start to experience the emotion and recognize that it doesn't have to be that way. I'm not there all the time, but when I am, it changes my life. I can decide not to get worked up, accept things as they are, and move on without wasting energy on it. Thoughts On Breathing I don't know if you're familiar with it, but my favorite breathing technique is the four-sided box breathing. It might have been developed by the military or popularized through their use, but I find it really impactful. When I go on stage, I feel this overwhelming burst of energy. If I don't express it physically, I can't calm down, which is strange because I'm an introvert and don't usually feel this way. It's the best way I can describe the nerves of getting up there. What I found is that using the four-sided box breathing helps. You count a set number of seconds—four, three, five, whatever you're comfortable with—for each part of the breath. You take that time to inhale, hold the breath in, exhale, and then hold the breath out. If you take the same amount of time for each of those four sides and go through a number of cycles, it really helps. It gets tough when you have to hold the breath with your lungs empty. If you can't do that, it's a sign you're breathing too shallow and not getting good enough breaths. For me, it's both a diagnostic tool and a way to force myself to slow down and calm my breathing. Bullying Story The best example of bullying I've experienced is with a former business partner, a family member whose business I bought into and ultimately bought out. This happened later in my career when I had mindfulness, but I could have handled it better. It was a controlling situation. I ran the business for several years but wasn't the majority owner at the time. Everyone knew it was time for me to buy the company, which both sides believed. However, there was this element of bullying because they knew how much I had invested in making the company successful and how much progress I'd made. The approach was bizarre and unprofessional, with talks about me buying the company but them still controlling it. Mindfulness has taught me a lot. Now, thanks to Chris Voss's book “Never Split the Difference,” I understand things better and don't get upset as easily. The biggest shift would have been to anticipate such situations, not let them visibly upset me, and instead process, plan, and work my way out of it calmly. Apply Chris' method to your own entrepreneurial endeavors and learn how your newfound emotional intelligence can unlock secrets to business success. Are you ready to negotiate like a pro? Then tapping on the play button is the 1st step. [00:01-11:27] The Psychology of Influence in Business Conversations Being coachable and proactive are key traits for success in negotiation and sales. The exploration of what works is essential for the development of effective strategies. Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in understanding and guiding discussions. Adaptability and continuous learning are important to master the art of negotiation. [11:28 -20:49] Effective Rapport Building in Sales and Negotiations Mirroring and labeling are psychological techniques used to establish a deeper connection during sales negotiations. The customer's value proposition is likely known before they fully engage in a sales conversation. A sales conversation is part of a 9 step journey that the customer undergoes, which includes thorough research and consultation about the product or service. Utilizing rapport-building techniques can help address and understand the challenges faced by customers. [20:50 - 29:29] Enhancing Sales Techniques with Emotional Intelligence Utilizing phrases that imply understanding, such as "it sounds like," forges stronger connections. Avoid stating "if I heard you correctly" to prevent diminishing the sense of rapport. Words can impact the emotional tone of a conversation, influencing the direction of negotiation. Changing the context in which words are used can alter their perceived positivity or negativity. [29:30 - 34:46] Sales Strategies using the Chris Voss Method of Communication Emphasizing tactical empathy as vital for rapport and insight. Mirroring as a technique to bond and acquire insights. Tim & Tim talk about negotiation, why it's an important part of the financial plan, the goals of negotiation, and tips for conducting an effective negotiation. Summary Tim Baker joins Tim Ulbrich on this episode to dig into all things negotiation. Negotiation is the process of discovery and a way to advocate for yourself and what your needs are. Tim Baker explains that negotiation is an important part of your financial plan for many reasons. He explains that settling for a lower salary can have a significant impact on your present and future finances because you may accrue less in retirement savings and potentially other investments. However, negotiation doesn't just lie in your salary. You can also negotiate benefits like flex scheduling, paid time off as well as potentially parental leave and professional development opportunities, among others. Tim Baker shares that 99% of hiring managers are expecting new hires to negotiate and build their initial offer as such. Many don't end up negotiating because they don't want to risk the offer being revoked, but Tim says that the majority of the time you should present a counter offer. Tim then digs into the stages of the negotiation process that include the interview, receiving an offer, presenting a counter offer and accepting the offer and position. He shares many strategies and tips for each stage as well as additional techniques to use throughout the process. About Today's Guest Tim Baker is the Co-Founder and Director of Financial Planning at Your Financial Pharmacist. Founded in 2015, YFP is a fee-only financial planning firm and connects with the YFP community of 12,000+ pharmacy professionals via the Your Financial Pharmacist Podcast podcast, blog, website resources and speaking engagements. Tim attended the United States Military Academy majoring in International Relations and branching Armor. After his military career, he worked as a logistician with a major retailer and a construction company. After much deliberation, Tim decided to make a pivot in his career and joined a small independent financial planning firm in 2012. In 2016, he launched his own financial planning firm Script Financial and in 2019 merged with Your Financial Pharmacist. Tim now lives in Columbus, Ohio with his wife (Shay), two kids (Olivia and Liam), and dog (Benji). Chris Voss is one of the preeminent practitioners and professors of negotiation skills in the world. He was formerly the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the FBI as well as the FBI's hostage negotiation representative for the National Security Council's Hostage Working Group. He is the founder of The Black Swan Group, a consulting firm that provides training and advises Fortune 500 companies through complex negotiations. He has taught business negotiation in MBA programs at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business and Georgetown's McDonough School of Business. He also taught business negotiation at Harvard and guest lectured at other leading universities including the MIT Sloan School of Management and Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management. His book is titled: Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It. Some interesting insights from this episode: · Working the crisis hotline was where Chris first learned the power of empathy. Showing someone that they feel heard is often enough to get them to change their behavior. · Empathy is about the transmission of information whereas compassion is about the reaction to that transmission. · Any time you relax into stress, you'll handle it far better. The act of relaxation increases your body's ability to handle its stress demands. · Labeling is a verbal observation of an emotion or a dynamic. It's a way of demonstrating that you're listening and understanding the other side. · Meeting someone halfway (i.e. splitting the difference) rarely works since it never feels like it's really halfway. You feel the transaction was unfair. Reason being, based on the economist Daniel Kahneman, people tend to fear a loss twice as much as they are likely to welcome an equivalent gain. · “Excellence is a delight with learning and growing. It is not the pursuit of perfection which is a fool's errand.” Notes: Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if your Life Depended on It Black Swan Group Fireside Black Swan Group Coaching Program

He's also the author of Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It.In this episode, Chris and I talk about how he became an FBI hostage negotiator, what a CFO can learn from negotiation, and the three biggest mistakes to avoid when negotiating.--------Guest Quotes:“Really counterintuitive stuff, this thing that we call empathy, you know, we call tactical empathy. It's ability to influence, if you can wrap your mind around what it really is, it works under all circumstances. Doesn't matter, as long as human beings are involved, whether it's a colleague, whether it's a client, whether it's an employee, whether it's somebody you work for, it seems mystical because it really operates on neuroscience and the feelings of being understood. But human beings are wired to be completely emotional. You know, every decision, you make up your mind based on what you care about, which makes decision making an emotional process because your fundamental basis is what you care about. And so then it's just applied emotional intelligence. And you know you can succeed in the boardroom or work with what I learned dealing with a drug dealer or a terrorist.” - Chris Voss--------Topics:03:02 How to become an FBI hostage negotiator03:41 What a CFO can learn from negotiation12:52 Three biggest mistakes in negotiation18:45 Achieving outcomes22:28 In-person versus digital communication27:38 Real life stories--------Sponsor:This show is brought to you by Soldo, the brighter way to manage business spending and expenses. Podcast Description Working with families for the past 20 years I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to relationship issues. There has been no shortage of relationship stories from life in the trenches, including a dad leaving in the middle of the night to go to Vegas just 3 days into postpartum! Despite its prevalence in society, divorce remains such a taboo topic. People can feel a sense of shame and failure when separating from a partner, and emotions are often running high. So how do we continue to prioritize the children when going through a divorce? And can we reframe divorce to be a positive experience for our kids? In today's epsode, I'm delighted to be joined by Kim Korven, aka The Conflict Queen, who helps us to explore a gentler way through family conflict and reminds us that while you won't be the first or the last to do it, you can do it where everyone wins. The SOA Leadership & Development (L&D) and Joint Risk Management (JRM) Sections are excited to announce that we are jointly starting a Book Club initiative focusing on leadership development and decision making this year! This will be a platform for all actuaries (and non-actuaries) to learn and share insights on leadership related topics. It is open to all experience levels since leadership skill development is a natural progression, starting with leading by example. Every other month, we will host a virtual discussion on lessons-learned and key takeaways from a pre-selected book. In-person meetings will be arranged during major SOA conferences as networking events. You don't have to attend all discussions. Each session is independent, and you can just register for the book tile or theme that you are interested in. Each virtual session will be facilitated by two volunteers. It is intended to be an interactive session and a safe place for participants to reflect on the key concepts discussed in the book, key takeaways and practical applications. Through our selection of books, we hope to cover a wide range of hot topics, such as negotiation, handling difficult conversations, delegating effectively, making risk based strategic decisions, etc. Book Club session line up for 2023: 1. “Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It” by Chris Voss – discussion on August 9th 11am central. Register here: https://www.soa.org/prof-dev/webcasts/2023-never-split-difference/ 2. “Dare to Lead: Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.” by Brené Brown – discussion to be held late September; exact date and registration details will be announced soon 3. “The Ten Commandments of Risk Leadership: A Behavioral Guide on Strategic Risk Management” by Annette Hofmann – discussion to be held early December; exact date and registration details will be announced soon. We have selected book titles for sessions to be hosted in 2024, and are also looking for volunteers to lead discussions. Because ultimately, trust equals donations.”“People want to be known, they want to be seen. Allie Egan is the Founder and CEO of Veracity Selfcare, a company that creates personal skincare routines based on real data about hormones and biofactors that impact skin and health. Allie began her career in investment banking and private equity, working at Stern Stewart & Co. and Greenhill & Co. She later worked with The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. and served as the CEO of the global lifestyle brand, Cynthia Rowley, before founding Veracity Selfcare.
