It's Monday time for our Zoomer Squad and there's a very worrisome development South of the border: Florida has passed a law allowing the importation of drugs from Canada. The Floridians are thrilled. They say this can save the $150 million a year but what about us? We are already plagued with serious drug shortages. Remember when busloads of Americans drove to a border pharmacy to buy insulin? And what about Americans buying Ozempic here at a third of the US price and exacerbating the shortage? What if anything can be done? JUSTIN BATES OF THE OPA REACTS TO FLORIDA IMPORTING DRUGS FROM CANADA Libby Znaimer is joined by Justin Bates, CEO of the Ontario Pharmacists Association. What are the rules around those possible sales to the US? Can the wholesalers just sell to whomever they like? Can the government stop them? Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Aaron Schimmer, the Director of Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as well as a staff physician and a senior scientist. Some very disturbing statistics from Ontario Health's annual report: Just over half of cancer surgeries - including those for some of the most aggressive cancers - were completed within the mandated wait time. This is actually a bit of an improvement over the previous year, when the pandemic was more of a factor but it is still not good enough.

Over the past year the issue of disrepair in social housing properties has risen in prominence to become one of the country's key social issues. This has been brought to light by the long-term ITV News investigation which has featured cases where residents have been living in appalling conditions. These case studies have painted a picture where tenants have been ignored by their landlords for months and sometimes years. This has been matched by a huge uptake in disrepair claims facing social landlords. In this episode of the Housing Podcast, Inside Housing's Jack Simpson and Grainne Cuffe ask: what is behind the rising number of disrepair claims being brought against social landlords? They are joined by: - Kwajo Tweneboa, social housing activist - Giles Peaker, partner at Anthony Gold and co-author of the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 - Justin Bates, barrister at Landmark Chambers and co-author of the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018 - Dorota Pawlowski, managing associate at Trowers & Hamlins
This week, we hear from experts at the Whitney Plantation and Monticello -- two tourist sites that are at the frontlines of contemporary discussions about the experiences of enslaved people and the role of slavery in the United States. Dr. Joy Banner, Director of Communications at the Whitney Plantation in Louisiana, describes how the site has created a visitor experience that centers the lives of the enslaved people who lived on the plantation. Justin Bates, a historical interpreter at Thomas Jefferson's home of Monticello, shares how he and his colleagues teach guests about the contradictions of Jefferson's life: that he was both the drafter of the Declaration of Independence and a lifelong slave owner who espoused racist views. We hope this episode gives you some good food for thought, and we would love to hear your reactions. You can reach out by sending us a voice message or saying hello on social media.
