As coaches, sport scientists, and athletes, we love intellectualizing our sport. There is an attempt to understand as much as possible so we can prescribe training to maximize performance. Behind all of this, the person carrying out this training can get lost amidst a myriad labels. In this episode, I sit down with Newton Cheng, National champion powerlifter and the director of performance and health at Google, to discuss his life's journey. This journey involves burnout, anxiety and depressive symptoms, and understanding who he is and what he values. After struggling during the start of the pandemic, he turned his life around by doing deep work, finding his values, and pursuing them.
