I'm very excited to welcome my great friend, Kiah Twisselman Burchett (better known as Coach Kiah), onto the podcast!Kiah loves helping people pursue curiosity and authenticity in their own lives, instead of chasing after worldly notions that only lead to emptiness and unfulfillment. In today's conversation, Kiah and I discuss what a ‘Quest for Joy' looks like, and why she is on a mission to bring this concept out into the world.Practicing self-awareness and allowing ourselves the gift of healing can feel extremely hard in the moment. However, it does show us what is no longer serving us, and guides us back home to our true selves (something both Kiah and I have experienced). Kiah is an incredible human being with so much love and energy to share with the world; if you're on your own quest for joy and are ready to (re) discover your authentic self again, this is the episode for you!!In this episode, we cover:What the Quest for Joy entails + why so many of us are seeking joy from things that still leave us feeling empty and unfulfilledHow Kiah plans to get Quest for Joy out into the world and bring people along for this journey Why our inability to process negative emotions tends to hinder our ability to feel, process, and welcome joyThe generational changes that we are now seeing with emotionsHow the ‘arrival fallacy' traps us into believing that a certain moment, achievement, etc. is the only way to make us feel happy and worthyWhy our healing journey shows us the power in shedding what's no longer serving us, and allows us to come back ‘home' to ourselvesKiah's ever-evolving Quest for Joy journey + her commitment to authenticity and truly getting to know herself again Resources & Links:Atlas of the Heart by Brene BrownJoin the waitlist for the Good Movement CollectiveGood Movement TrainingsGood Movement music by: Aaron EspePodcast produced by: Jill Carr PodcastingConnect with Kiah:Follow on Instagram @coach_kiahCheck out her websiteListen to her podcast Climbing with Coach KiahConnect with Terryn:Follow on Instagram @terryn.drielingCheck out my websiteSend me an email at terryn@faithfamilyandbeef.comMake sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode!Find the complete show notes here:

Listener, when I was mapping out the first part of the year here at The Found Podcast and decided that February was all about belief and self-confidence, I just KNEW we had to have my friend Coach Kiah in for a guest interview. Kiah Twisselman Burchett is a California cattle rancher turned motivational speaker on a mission to empower others to love themselves deeper, care for themselves better, and find joy in this messy, beautiful, journey of life. Through hosting retreats, motivational speaking, her podcast Climbing with Coach Kiah, and coaching her clients, Coach Kiah helps women cultivate confidence through self-awareness, compassion, curiosity, and growth. As she shares in the episode, Kiah wouldn't always describe herself as “confident,” but through all the peaks and valleys of her lived experience, she's learned to lean into her gifts, talents, and dreams, to write her own story. Our time together FLEW by and I just loved where the journey took us in today's episode. Be sure to visit Coach Kiah's website for more, including details on her upcoming Ireland retreat, her Cultivating Confidence free downloadable guide, and more of her energetic and inspirational stories from her podcast. Key Takeaways She calls herself a “California cattle ranch kid,” and throughout her life Kiah has found herself coming back time and again to the rural/ag community. Kiah says that a lot of her self-worth over the years was defined by her picture of the “ideal body.” Her journey to attain that body over nearly two decades lead to a series of yo-yo fad diets before a pivotal moment caused her to take massive action and reinvent herself and her entire life. Kiah found success in her mental, physical, and emotional wellness when she stopped restricting herself and began celebrating, loving, and nourishing herself with what she needed: “It was more about what would make me feel really good today…and really it was about focusing on the mindset aspect first.” “I had no idea where my life would be now, five years ago. And I'm not naive enough to say that I know what the next five years of my life will look like. I don't know, but I'm along for the ride!” “The truth is that I really do believe that every single one of us are the main characters in our own lives, but whether or not we feel that way is another story.” “All of us are looking for this prescriptive list…we want someone to tell us what to do…But the question isn't “what do I do?” the question is “how do I think?” and the thinking and the feeling is the hardest part of this journey but it's the most important piece.” It's the thinking and the feeling, not the doing, that will ultimately propel us to personal and professional success and belief in ourselves. “We are not even aware of the stories we are constantly ruminating on in the back of our minds.” Coach Kiah really believes that journaling and getting those thoughts out on paper is a helpful tool for reflection, self-awareness, and growth. Where is Coach Kiah climbing in 2024? Listen to the full episode to find out! Since we're approaching the end of 2023, Kiah and I thought it would be beneficial to dive more into habits and share some tactical tools and takeaways to help you re-evaluate your current habits, or re-establish new ones all together. We both feel very passionately about habits, because they can really enhance the FULL 360 view of your life. The power of tiny habits has majorly impacted our businesses, health journeys, and personal growth journeys. One year ago, a HUGE dream of mine was coming to life…launching a podcast! Between my personal journey, the conversations we've had on this show, countless lessons learned, new perspectives, and overall growth, this year has truly been one like no other. I'm so grateful to YOU for making Gather in Growth what it is today. I've had the joy of interviewing some incredible women who inspire me and have beautiful stories to share. I've learned so much about myself, the world, and you along the way and I'm so excited to share pieces of that with you in this very special anniversary episode. In each guest interview, I ask the question “what does personal growth mean to you” and we have compiled each guest's answer to make today's episode extra special. Over the last 12 months, there's been a huge transformation in me and in my life. In this episode, I have the joy of welcoming a long awaited guest, my very own husband, Brent Burchett! When I first started this podcast about two years ago, I asked Brent to be a guest on the podcast and much to my dismay, he said no! He then agreed that if I made it to 100 episodes, then he'd be a guest on the show. So here we are! 100 episodes into the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast and he kept his word. Brent Burchett serves as Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau. His 15-year career in agriculture and public policy has included service at the local, state, and federal levels of government, including the Kentucky Department of Agriculture, Kentucky Soybean Association, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, Kentucky Secretary of State, and the Office of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell. Burchett is a proud graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and the Martin School for Public Policy and Administration. He grew up working on his family's grain and tobacco farm near the western Kentucky town of Murray, and lives today in San Luis Obispo with his wonderful wife, Kiah. In this episode, we'll chat about:The story of how we metHow our past business of Burley & Barley came aboutHow bourbon is made, how to read labels, and some tips on choosing a good oneSome insight on Ag LobbyingDifferences between CA agriculture and KY agricultureA few questions that my community askedThe thing we fight about most in our relationship Resources & Links:International Retreat SurveyLearn more about partnering with me as a speakerInquire about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcastShop the Coach Kiah Store. "The biggest hurdle for so many people pursuing health and wellness, including healing their relationship with food and being intentional about nutrition, has so much more to do with their mental and emotional state that we often realize. I believe that health should be pursued in a holistic approach, not sacrificing one aspect of health while in pursuit of another." Kiah Twisselman Burchett, better known as Coach Kiah, is a California cattle rancher turned motivational speaker, life coach, and podcaster on a mission to empower others to love themselves deeper, care for themselves better, and find joy in this messy, beautiful journey of life. After battling with her own weight and body image from a young age, she embarked on her own personal health journey losing over 100 pounds, but more importantly, the mental weight she had been carrying with her for years. Recently named one of Cowgirl Magazine's 2023 Top 30 Under 30, Coach Kiah uses her vulnerability and infectious energy to show others how to overcome hardships and become the main characters of their own lives. She wants people to know that farmers and ranchers, regardless of the size of their operation, are committed to the safety of the food they produce and the well-being of the animals they care for. Fear driven marketing of food often creates distrust and shame around food choices. Not only does fear driven marketing negatively impact farmers and ranchers, but it also trickles down to the consumer and the cost of food that they purchase. Food shaming can also negatively impact consumers relationship with food, making them feel like a bad person if they can't afford to purchase items with all the fancy buzz words. As a coach, I wish people knew that my role is NOT to give nutrition advice in any way. That's what we have registered dietitians for! As someone whose family ranches, I wish people knew that we all have a LOT more in common that we have different. Farmers and ranchers have a lot of the same worries, concerns, and priorities as consumers do and vice versa. Through our Backroad Cowgirls series, our hope is to use storytelling to create more connections between those who produce food and those who consume it. As a dreamer, I tend to get caught up in the future, dreaming of big bold audacious dreams for my life. It's great, but constantly living in the future has a tendency to steal my attention from being present in the moment. Aware of that pitfall, one of my guideposts for this year has been to romanticize my life. Not the one I'm creating for myself in the future, but the one I'm living in right here and now. The 5 Ways to Romanticize Your Life are: Reflect back on the growth you've already experienced to root yourself in gratitude for where you are. Taking an intentional moment to tune into all five senses: smell, touch, sight, taste, sound Create a meaningful and nostalgic playlist that represents your life in this season Capture memories and make mini documentaries Asking yourself in real time, “What am I going to miss about this season one day when it's over?” Resources & Links: The Gap and the Gain by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy [affiliate link] Learn more about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast Shop the Coach Kiah Store. This might be a weird question… but does your wardrobe spark joy? How do you feel when you open up your closet? Do you have some clothes you love, some that fit, some that don't, some that are sentimental, and maybe some you call you “goal” clothes for when you can finally fit into them? Does your closet make you feel shame? If so, then it's time for a refresh. What would it feel like to open up your closet and feel joy? To feel peace? To feel ease? Let's talk about how you can create those feelings in that space for yourself. In this episode, we'll chat about: What to do if you feel shame when you look in your closet My opinion on “goal clothes” Tips and tricks for effectively cleaning out your closet so that it serves you Your body, as it is today, deserves clothes that fit it comfortably and make you feel confident We need to change our self love to be unconditional instead of conditional Tips on purchasing (or thrifting!) new clothes Resources & Links: Learn more about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast Grab my FREE Healthy Habit Tracker Learn more about House of Colour with Kylie Epperson Shop the Coach Kiah Store. I think a lot of us fall into the neverending self-help spiral of always trying to fix ourselves. Today's guest, Alison Faulkner, shares something extraordinarily refreshing in her book, You're Already Awesome, because it took an entirely different approach to personal development. The main premise being that there is really nothing about you to fix. You're already awesome. Alison Faulkner is a branding and events expert, host of the podcast Awesome with Alison a top 100 health and wellness podcast, consultant for Fortune 500 companies, writer, speaker, artist, self-proclaimed nonsense dancer, author, and CEO of Alison's Brand School, partnering with Microsoft and Alaska Airlines among others. Alison is obsessed with her kids, husband, family, and friends. In this episode, we'll chat about: How instead of trying to fix ourselves, we should notice and accept ourselves The goal of getting to a place where we can enjoy and embrace reality An explanation of shadow work The power of creating just for the sake of creating (and not for the sake of sharing online) Resources & Links: Check out Alison's website Read Alison's book, You're Already Awesome [affiliate link] Women Who Run With the Wolves [affiliate link] The Artist's Way [affiliate link] Connect with Alison on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube Subscribe to Alison's podcast: Awesome with Alison Learn more about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast Sign up for my email newsletter! I have broken up with my scale. Here's the thing: scales aren't bad. They are a hunk of metal and plastic, there is nothing moral about them. They are an inanimate object that's job is to provide data. And that data isn't even bad! Whether it's higher or lower than you'd like, it's simply a string of numbers measuring a mass. Now, all that said, our relationship with this totally neutral object may be anything but neutral. And I think our society has been conditioned to put more weight into what it says, pun intended, than is actually helpful for our overall health. Today I'm going to discuss 7 ways to measure health without a scale. So, if you are exploring the idea of breaking up with scale while also still wanting to focus on your health, this one is for you! In this episode, we'll chat about: Weight obsession along with rampant diet culture is actually hurting us more than it's helping It's not inherently BAD to want to lose weight but looking at weight as the sole measure of health is bad because there are so many other ways to do so Health does not LOOK a certain way and weight is NOT the best indicator of health The 7 ways to measure health without a scale Resources & Links: FREE Healthy Habits Tracker Emily Reuschel's ASCEND retreat A Court of Thorns book series [affiliate link] Learn more about advertising on the Climbing with Coach Kiah podcast Shop the Coach Kiah Store. She is a mother to three adventurous children and leads their home education journey through living and rich experiences. She also serves as the Director of Family Preparedness for Fieldcraft Survival, a Utah based and veteran owned survival company. Hey listener! I can't wait for you to fall in love with today's guest, Jill Carr. I knew she'd be a fast friend when we first connected on Instagram (with a voice memo, of course! A girl after my own heart!) After our first zoom call I knew I couldn't keep her to myself and had to invite her on the podcast. Key Takeaways: Jill Carr helps rural women extend their voice with podcasting. She offers a variety of services to launch, manage, and grow podcasts. Jill lives with her family on a ranch in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Before launching her own company she discovered podcasts on her 40-minute commute. She became a virtual assistant in 2018 and focused in on podcasting in the last year. Coach Kiah was a VA client and became Jill's first podcast. Jill was hooked! In 2021 she went all in on niching down into podcasting. Jill discusses the challenges of being a mom-treprenuer. She originally became her own boss to have more time with family, but realized it was easy to overextend herself. She learned better boundary setting. Jill says to always remember your “why” by revisiting it every day. It's important to have boundaries and systems. Jill shares three big reasons to consider podcasting. It's so accessible and is always where your audience is. You can take it along with whatever else has to be done like mowing the yard or doing dishes. Connection is the biggest piece of podcasting. You can network with guests, share your voice, and position yourself as an expert. It is so great for building community. Jill says podcasting is the best long-form content tool. You can repurpose content with reels, email newsletters, and blog posts. Jill mentions Emily Reuschel of the Gather in Growth podcast Why bother podcasting when there are millions already out there? Jill says the numbers are deceiving: Only 53% of podcasts produced more than three episodes, 12% have released a new episode in the last quarter, and only 7% in the last month. This leaves fewer than 300,000 “competitors” but remember non all podcasts are for your ideal listener anyway. It's fun to begin but episodes 10-20 are hard! Stick with it and dig in for the long haul. Invest in technical help if you need to. Today we have a very special kind of episode planned for today. Last month, I had the incredible honor of hosting my first ever ASCEND retreat for rural women in Destin, Florida. And on the final day of our weekend, one of my coaches and dear friend, Coach Kiah, pulled each woman at the retreat aside and asked them a series of questions about their experience. My podcast manager and I wanted to use this audio to put together an episode to, first of all, serve as a beautiful tribute and keepsake for the incredible women who attended this very special, incredible first ever ASCEND retreat, and also as a tangible way to explain just what kind of magic is in store throughout the ASCEND experience. Today I had the absolute joy of sitting down with my dear friend Kiah as we chatted about defining enough and finding joy in the journey. In this episode, we share our personal relationship with enoughness, the comparison game, and finding contentment. Our hope is that this episode brings light to the things that so many of us grapple with on a daily basis and provides tools to both recognize and overcome the mindset traps that keep us feeling overwhelmed and stuck. In this episode and about defining enoughness, we cover: The power of the thoughts we think about ourselves Ways to combat the feelings of not being enough Contentment is a moving target and sometimes we have to re-learn the same lessons over again in different parts of our lives such as motherhood, marriage, entrepreneurship, and our health journeys The comparison trap we sometimes face and how to overcome Accepting that with each season of life, there will be beautiful and encouraging parts as well as challenging and hard parts Connect with Coach Kiah: Subscribe to Kiah's podcast, Climbing with Coach Kiah Join Kiah's email list Follow on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok Check out her website Resources & Links: Jon Acuff's Soundtracks [affiliate link] Dan Sullivan's The Gap and the Gain [affiliate link] Get your #YouDoYou82 tracker and join the Facebook community! On this week's episode of the podcast, join me in a candid conversation about before and after photos inspired by a weight loss company that recently stole mine. To be honest, I have mixed feelings about them. I waver between seeing them as a powerful tool to inspire and connect with others while also struggling with how to make sure they aren't unintentionally instilling more shame and perpetuating the problems that diet culture has created. In this episode, we'll chat about: How my before and after photos were stolen and used for multiple false articles and ads to promote scam diet fads and programs There is no magic pill, no specific diet, no special surgery that will create a healthy relationship with your body The biggest difference between my before and after photos is NOT the physical transformation, it's the mental and emotional transformations My dreams and plans to make an in-person event happen this year! We all have a lie of “once.” I'll finally be happy ONCE… once I lose the weight, once I have the ring, once I buy the house. But most of the time what we truly want isn't the thing, but the feeling we think the thing will give us. For me, the story was always weight loss. That's what I thought I wanted. But what I actually wanted was acceptance, self-love, romantic love, self-confidence, freedom, joy, and energy and to keep up with my nieces. We don't want THINGS, we want the feeling we think the things will give us. But here's the kicker… Feelings are born of thought, not circumstance. MINDSET is everything. How you think and feel about yourself influences the way you show up in every aspect of your life. What you THINK. Impacts how you FEEL. Which determines what you DO. In this episode, we'll chat about: The lie of ONCE The think, feel, do cycle The truth about how to become a happier person Find the complete show notes here: https://www.coachkiah.com/blog/lie-of-once Join the CLIMB Community! It's that time of year when people might start backsliding on their goals. And when we have an all-or-nothing or perfectionist mindset, this is typically when we throw in the towel and give up all together. Instead, let's talk about how failure is an inevitable and vital part of our journey to success. It's time to RETHINK failure. It's time we start fabulously failing forward, my friends. In this episode, we'll chat about: Failure is an event, not an identity. Your ability to succeed is dependent on your willingness to fail. It's not about getting it perfect and never failing, it's about your elasticity to bounce back after you fail that determines how fast you grow. ‘Tis the season of joy, family, giving, and gratitude but sometimes the holiday season can also bring with it sadness, anxiety, depression, and grief. Thankfully, the good news is that the very thing that can help us navigate those uncomfortable emotions happens to be built right into the season: gratitude. I started my own personal development journey with gratitude FIRST, establishing the habit of writing down five simple bullet points of gratitude each morning. This simple practice, which I have now been implementing for three years strong, has quite literally changed my life. Business acumen and a strong product are important for entrepreneurs, but one of the greatest and often overlooked strengths of entrepreneurs is vulnerability. Kiah Twisselman Burchett didn't set out to be an entrepreneur. But as she began sharing her health journey and honest experiences while working a full-time job, people became interested in following in her footsteps. Her life coaching company, Coach Kiah, was soon born. Kiah believes vulnerability is one of the most important skills for entrepreneurs. Customers need to feel connected to the brand and the person behind it, no matter what product or service you sell. Too often entrepreneurs think they are supposed to be the experts and have everything figured out. But being vulnerable and showing the human side to a business creates a community of customers who connect with the entrepreneur on a different level. Along with vulnerability comes storytelling. People resonate with stories, and being able to share honest and vulnerable stories shows customers and potential customers what things are like behind the scenes. Strong stories build connections and give a face and human feel to the business. Social media makes it possible and easier than ever to share authentic updates through a blog, Instagram, YouTube, or many other channels that meet customers where they are. Kiah says bringing customers along and making them part of the story is incredibly powerful. That often requires getting outside your comfort zone and showing parts of the business or your life that are messy and imperfect. But as Kiah says, stories are what allow customers to see themselves in the entrepreneur and business and are one of the most powerful things you can do. Embracing vulnerability and sharing stories can be intimidating. Kiah recommends giving yourself permission to start where you are with what you have. You might not have the biggest business or fanciest life, but embracing the journey of entrepreneurship and sharing it can be hugely beneficial to your brand and business. In honor of October being National Women's Small Business Month, I am dedicating the next four episodes to women entrepreneurship. I've found that whether it's the journey of health or business, the underlying factor that determines our success is the same: mindset. We're kicking off this series with my own entrepreneurship story. The journey to becoming Coach Kiah has been anything but a straight path. Growing up I never intended to become an entrepreneur, but over time my heart (and homesickness) eventually pulled me in that direction. There have been lots of unexpected twists and turns along the way and in this episode, I share with you the story of how it all unfolded. Reaching for the next action step without getting to the root of your thoughts won't give you different results. You'll find yourself stuck in the same loop, wanting to quit, unable to lose the weight, still unhappy and unfulfilled… just as Kiah did, until now. Coach Kiah is a former cattle rancher turned life coach who grew up struggling with her weight. She says how obesity was her greatest curse - one she always felt victim to. It wasn't until one day, that a flight and Rachel Hollis' book, Girl Wash Your Face, changed everything. Kiah realized she had been playing victim to her weight, relationships, and unhappiness when in reality, it wasn't on anyone else but her to start making different choices for herself. This was the catalyst for her to turn her life around, lose 125 lbs, and start life coaching other women on how they could change their lives, too. As more and more people saw Kiah's transformation, they wanted to know how she did it. They first reached out to her about weight loss, wanting the exact diet and recipe to success. But Kiah quickly realized that it was so much more than that. Weight loss isn't the only goal in creating a healthy, fulfilling lifestyle. Mental health is a huge priority as well. As Kiah teaches in her programs, mindset comes FIRST, so that when you do lose weight, you already know how to be happy and fulfilled.
