Debora's powerful lyrics and distinct vocal style challenged conventions and gave voice to those who often went unheard in the post-punk scene of the early '80s.  But Debora's journey as an artist didn't stop with Romeo Void. She's continued to create compelling work as a solo artist, blending her poetic roots and fearless authenticity into albums like Strange Language and projects such as Knife in Water and The Raton 3. Etwa „Paul ist tot“ von den Fehlfarben, "Movement Of Fear" von Tones On Tail oder "Things We Never Did" von Sad Lovers And Giants.   Weitere Bands mit Saxofon in dieser Folge sind unter anderem Grauzone, The Psychedelic Furs, Fields Of The Nephilim, Romeo Void, The Damned und The Cure. Alles und noch viel mehr zu hören in unserer Spotify-Playlist. “Never Say Never” Formed by classmates at the Art Institute in San Francisco at the sunset of the 70s, Romeo Void were one of the most dynamic, inventive and singular outfits around. Fronted by singer Debora Iyall, the classic Romeo Void lineup was Iyall on vocals, Peter Woods on guitar, bassist Frank Zincavage, saxophonist Benjamin Bossi and drummer Aaron Smith. They toured nationally, had fans that ranged from Ric Ocasek of the Cars to Ann Wilson of Heart and they signed to a major label. Things were happening. The band put out three perfect and critically acclaimed albums—It's a Condition, Benefactor and Instincts--before calling it a day in 1984. A captivating singer, Iyall had the street mart snarl of Jim Carroll and the poetic finesse of Patti Smith and she inhabited each number with strength, vulnerably and wisdom. The songs were frank and honest and their post-punk purity and new wave muscle still sounds as vital today as it did back then. And if you want to check to see if I'm right—the band has just put out LIVE FROM MABUHAY GARDENS: NOVEMBER 14, 1980, THE BAND'S FIRST OFFICIAL LIVE ALBUM. This is a searing eleven song set that's dynamic, urgent and rippling with power. www.romeovoid.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Girl. This simple four letter word has been the impetus behind many of the greatest songs of all time, and the O3L era was no exception. Whether it's a male sung ode to love, longing, success and frustration with the opposite sex, or a female sung declaration of solidarity and empowerment, this week we celebrate songs with the word "girl" in the title (well, most of them). One of those wonderful songs is the 1984 Top 40 smash by Romeo Void, "A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing)." So what an incredible thrill it is for us to welcome as our special guest...DEBORA IYALL from ROMEO VOID! Romeo Void was formed in 1979. Drawing inspiration from the local underground music scene, the band's founding members were San Francisco Art Institute students Debora Iyall (lead vocalist, lyricist) and Frank Zincavage (bass guitar), alongside local musicians Peter Woods (guitar) and Jay Derrah (drums). They soon added saxophonist Benjamin Bossi. According to Iyall, the name Romeo Void referred to “a lack of romance.”  Romeo Void's first official live album, Live From Mabuhay Gardens: November 14, 1980, was recently released on special galaxy blue vinyl for Record Store Day, as well as on CD and digital, by the Liberation Hall label. Recorded at the famed San Francisco punk club by deejay Terry Hammer, the album was captured during the same period that Romeo Void was recording its critically acclaimed debut album for 415 Records, It's a Condition. Derrah was still drumming with the band at this live show, but was replaced by John “Stench” Haines by the time the sessions for It's a Condition were underway. Eight of the eleven songs on Live from Mabuhay Gardens: November 14, 1980, would eventually appear on It's a Condition. The opening track, “Guards,” would surface in 1981 as the B-side of the band's national breakout single, “Never Say Never.” “Fine Line” is an original that has never been released in any format. The album's closing number, “Double Shot of My Baby's Love,” is a cover of the Swingin' Medallions' 1966 hit, which was the first 45 single which Iyall owned.  Learn more about your ad choices. "A Girl In Trouble Is A Temporary Thing", "Talk Dirty To Me”, and of course, "I Might Like You Better If We Slept Together" from the song "Never Say Never", all came from the mind…and experience...of Debora. Her band made a name for itself in the San Francisco scene in the early 80s, and now a recording, Live From The Mabuhay Gardens, November 14, 1980 has surfaced, and captures the band as they were first establishing themselves. The recording from that night will be released on Record Store Day on galaxy-blue colored vinyl. Romeo Void were a sneaky important band. First, they were the most successful band to come out of the San Francisco scene of the early 80s and showed that interesting things were happening in that city. They also had a couple of the most provocative hits of the era, "Never Say Never" and "A Girl in Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)" that remain potent today. And frontwoman Debora Iyall represented proudly large women everywhere with her style, intellect, talent and grace. Debora joins us to talk about the band's history, how she coped with being unique, and the new album Romeo Void has coming out on Record Store Day which is a concert from 1980 at the Mabuhay Gardens. She's a icon and we're lucky to hear from her.  www.romeovoid.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

King, Sun, Motown & Stax - all independent record companies that helped shape the course of popular music. Another such label, 415 Records, emerged in the late Seventies out of San Francisco. Originally, the company just covered the burgeoning punk movement that was happening there, but eventually they expanded, releasing an album by psychedelic pioneer Roky Erickson, then landing videos on MTV with Romeo Void, Translator and the Red Rockers. All of this is documented in Disturbing the Peace - 415 Records and the Rise of New Wave written by Bill Kopp from HoZac Books. Kopp is a lifelong collector, musician and journalist who's first book was called Reinventing Pink Floyd: From Syd Barrett to the Dark Side of the Moon.We chat about how he tracked down almost 100 interviews for the book, how he obtained much of the photos, band posters, etc, that help flesh out the story, and the relationship 415 had with Columbia Records that had mixed results at best.

Author Bill Kopp has gifted music lovers with a fantastic piece of history. In his new book, Disturbing The Peace, Bill tells the story of San Francisco's influential 415 Record label started by Howie Klein and Chris Knabb. The story recounts how this upstart label even got off the ground, the key venues that built the scene, and, of course, the many excellent bands, many of which have been lost to history. Eventually, when 415 artists like Romeo Void, Translator, Wire Train and Red Rockers started having success, Klein sold the label to Columbia, which turned out to be the deathell. This fantastic history book includes loads of rare pictures, flyers, and stories that deserve to be told, but haven't been till now.  Every music lover needs this book!  www.hozacrecords.com/product/disturbing-the-peace

In the fall of 1984 there was nowhere you could go in the United States without hearing something off of Purple Rain, the album and the motion picture from Prince and The Revolution.  This album was the sixth studio album by Prince, and the first to also bill the band, The Revolution (although the band was hinted at on the album 1999, being written backwards on the album cover).  Prince would become a superstar with this album and film.Prince (aka Prince Rogers Nelson) was born into a musical family.  His mother was a jazz singer and his father was a pianist in a jazz group called the Prince Rogers trio.  His father, John Lewis Nelson, went by the stage name Prince Rogers, from which Prince got his name.  Prince was a multi-instrumentalist, prolific singer-songwriter, producer, actor, and director.  He signed his first music contract with Warner Brothers Records at the age of 19, and had achieved considerable success with his albums “Dirty Mind,” “Controversy,” and "1999,” the last of which was a commercial success with “Little Red Corvette” receiving considerable airplay on MTV.Purple Rain would spend 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart.  Prince required his management to obtain a deal for him to star in a major motion picture in the early 1980's, at a time when he was relatively unknown outside of a few pop and R&B hits.  The film is loosely autobiographical, and follows Prince's character, the kid, as his relationships, family, and band fall apart.  Things turn around when the kid opens up to others and his career is resurrected by a song with lyrics from his father and music from his band members.  Hit songs would include “When Doves Cry” and “Let's go Crazy,” both topping the charts, and “Purple Rain,” which would hit number 2 on the charts.Prince would go on to be a music icon, and estimates of the number of complete songs written during his lifetime range between 500 and 1000.  Prince tragically died of a fentanyl overdose in 2016 at the age of 57.  This is an historic album and a torchbearer of a R&B/rock fusion genre that was literally everywhere in the fall of 1984.  We hope you will listen to this album in its entirety.  Let's Go Crazy“Dearly Beloved....we are gathered here today to get through this thing called 'LIFE'.”  Those fantastically quotable lines lead off the album.  You get a sense that this will be a different sound with the combination of a R&B beat and a Jimi Hendrix-style screaming guitar more associated with hard rock.  This is the second single from the album and a number 1 hit on multiple charts.Take Me With UThis song is a duet with singer and co-star of the film, Apollonia Kotero, and was the final single released from the album.  It was originally going to be on Apollonia's band's album (Apollonia 6), but made it on the soundtrack.  Prince intended to have the singer Vanity in the lead role, but Apollonia was chosen when Denise "Vanity" Matthews resigned from Vanity 6.I Would Die 4UThe fourth single from the album would hit number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics are thoughts on words that Jesus would say to his disciples.  This song occurs towards the end of the movie in a mini-concert, and was often paired with the song “Baby, I'm a Star” on radio at the time.Purple RainThe title track and third single from the album was originally intended as a country collaboration with Stevie Nicks!  According to Nicks, she received a 10-minute instrumental and was asked to write the lyrics, but was overwhelmed at the prospect.  Band member Wendy Melvoin inspired a change to the current style with her guitar chords during a practice session.  This song also has religious overtones, with the color purple often evoking images of God or end times in Prince's music.     ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the television series “Miami Vice” - Jan HammerThis show had everyone in thrall, Don Johnson in stubble and scrunched-up jackets, and Jan Hammer on the charts in a rare instrumental hit. STAFF PICKS:The Bird by Morris Day and the TimeBruce leads off the staff picks with another group propelled to stardom by "Purple Rain."  Prince had a clause in his Warner Brothers contract that allowed him to recruit and produce other artists for the label, and The Time was one that he assembled in 1981.  Prince collaborated on much of the work from The Time, including this third album "Ice Cream Castle."  Morris Day and the Time played a rival house band in the movie "Purple Rain."If This Is It by Huey Lewis and the NewsBrian brings us the fourth single from the hugely successful album “Sports.” The video demonstrates Lewis's humor, with beach scenes and the band buried up to their necks.  "So let me go, or make me want to stay...If this is it, please let me know."  This is the first Huey Lewis song to break into the top 40 in the U.K.  New Girl Now by Honeymoon SuiteWayne's staff pick features a deeper cut from a Canadian hair metal band.  This chronicles the issues that may follow when a guy has a specific type of girl he falls for.  The band hails from the Niagara Falls area, and the connection with that popular honeymoon location explains the origin of their name.  The sound has hints of new wave with the synthesizer in the background.  A Girl In Trouble (Is a Temporary Thing)  by Romeo VoidRob  closes out this week's staff picks with a more pop-oriented song from a decidedly non-pop band.  The band, sometimes associated with new wave, really wanted to be considered a punk band.  Singer Deborah lyall considered the band to be a reaction against the bleached blonde conformity of the time, and was proud of her Native American heritage.  The lyrics portray a more positive “taking care of things yourself” attitude than the minor key would suggest. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Shortberry Strawcake by Sheila E.We finish off this week's podcast with another Prince-related artist.  Sheila E. had this instrumental track on her album "Glamorous Life."

The city of Boston in 1976 was a busy musical town, as the debut album from the band Boston hit the airwaves and music store shelves. It was in this very same year that Ric Ocasek and The Cars came forward to produce a sound totally unlike Boston the band, focused on pop synth new wave experimentation that earned them millions of record sales, and eventually a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. Ric Ocasek made a name for himself not only as a prolific singer and songwriter, but also as a producer for fellow new wave bands like Romeo Void and Suicide, and later, alternative rockers Weezer. He even began producing the 90s pop trio of brothers Hanson but was booted off the record for forbidding corporate presence in the studio while the brothers were recording. In 1984, the band produced one of their best pop songs of all time, Drive. During the video shoot, Ocasek met supermodel Paulina Porizkova on the set. They fell in love, got married in ’89, and had two boys. 1978 was a great year for the debut of the Cars, as they were named Best New Artist by both Rolling Stone and Creem Magazine. In 1979, they lost their Best New Artist Grammy award to one-hit wonder, A Taste of Honey. Anyone that has met Ric Ocasek might say he was a little bit off the wall. Perhaps that’s because his family life wasn’t exactly simple. Ocasek's father worked for NASA on Top secret projects. Ric recalled one time when government agents visited his house and questioned his mother about the dreams his father had at night. The band broke up in 1988 and Ocasek told reporters that a reunion would never happen. So, in 2005, surviving bandmates joined fellow 70s-rocker Todd Rundgren to form “The New Cars,” performing many of the Cars and Rundgren’s hits. The band toured in 2006, then disbanded shortly after, with the full Ocasek-led group reuniting in 2010 for a new album. But the reunion didn’t last long. The band toured for less than three weeks before calling it quits. The next time they appeared together occurred during the live and televised performance of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2018, when they played several of their biggest hits together. It turned out to be their last performance together, as Ric Ocasek died in 2019.

February 1984— The Pretenders— “Learning to Crawl” Coming after a hiatus and the tragedy of losing two band members to drug overdoses, The Pretenders third studio album was perhaps a surprisingly successful endeavor. The name “Learning to Crawl” pays homage to Chrissy Hynde's daughter, Natalie Rae Hynde, who was indeed learning to crawl at the time. There's a sense of loss that comes from this album in tracks like “My City Was Gone” or “Time the Avenger,” but there's also an acknowledgment of more mundane activities in songs like “Watching the Clothes.” This is a great album from one of Rock's strong female leads, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. “Middle of the Road” This is the first track on the album, and has a bit of a new wave feel. This song was released as a single in 1983, ahead of the album release, as were several tracks off the album. Check out the guitar riff and the harmonica solo on this one. “Time the Avenger” This one has a Romantics feel to it. "No one is perfect, not even a perfect stranger." Hynde spent some time in London with groups like The Clash and The Damned. “Watching the Clothes” Here's a deeper cut inspired by the death of a friend and spending time in the laundromat. “My City Was Gone” Anyone who has heard the Rush Limbaugh program bump music has heard this track. The inspiration for this was Hynde's return to her hometown and the changes she saw over time. “And my pretty countryside had been paved down the middle by a government that had no pride.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “Never Say Never” by Romeo Void, from the movie, Reckless This cult classic was featured in the 1984 movie "Reckless," a movie with a soundtrack that was more popular than the film. STAFF PICKS: “What if I’d Been the One” by 38 Special This Southern Rock track was off of 38 Special's album "Tour de Force." The lyrics are quite depressing despite the upbeat sound of the tune itself. Bruce went local as the album was recorded at Studio One in Doraville, GA. “Take Me Away” by Blue Oyster Cult Wayne doesn't disappoint with his rocking pick. This alien abduction track is from the later BOC days. "I lift my eyes and say, 'come on and take me away.'" “Hyperactive” by Thomas Dolby “Why don’t you tell me about your childhood...” Rob's staff pick drifts into the techno-pop new wave. Dolby had originally intended this song for Michael Jackson, but after getting no response from the King of Pop, he decided to do it himself. “I Want a New Drug” by Huey Lewis & the News Brian closes the staff picks with Huey Lewis's hit off the third album "Sports." This propelled Lewis and the band to super-stardom, and this track was on the top of the pop and dance charts. INSTRUMENTAL OR LAUGH TRACK: “The Attitude Song” by Steve Vai Vai was the lead guitarist for David Lee Roth's band when he went solo. Vai is very well known among guitar artists as a virtuoso, and this instrumental demonstrates why.

The particular version here, the Carnival Version, is very similar to the original, though it contains a few more measures of instrumentation for a nice change of pace to the familiar one any retro lovers will know by heart. Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy, known for his catchy 80s tune Kiss Me and for his band The Lilac Time, was the original vocalist for the band, though he left after a year figuring they would go nowhere. Simon Le Bon eventually became the frontman and the highly recognizable face of the group, though it's keyboardist Nick Rhodes with his flair for production and keyboard wizardry that really helped define the group's sound. An avid fine artist, he was acutely aware early on of the power that music videos could have on album sales, as any boy on the verge of his teens will recall from the early days of MTV. Though most guys at that age were taunted and teased mercilessly for listening to such flamboyant music, Duran Duran were an early guilty pleasure that found their way into my regular music rotation when I wasn't hanging out with the rabble-rousers. Speaking of Mr. Rhodes, there is a larger connection between Duran Duran and Kajagoogoo, the second band appearing in this episode, than just the beat matching. It was Nick who discovered them and persuaded them to sign with EMI records despite a bidding war among three other record labels. He also helped produce their first album, White Feathers, along with Duran Duran producer Colin Thurston (who has made several appearances here on CRC doing work for Talk Talk and others). That album contained the title track heard here. An interesting side note: Nick also produced Kajagoogoo's biggest hit, Too Shy, which went on to top the charts in 1983. The kicker is that Duran Duran wouldn't have their own number one until later to the chagrin of Nick. I'm certain there are no sour grapes as Duran Duran went on to have a much longer career when all was said and done. Over the past two episodes, the summer edition and this week's new wave edition, you may have seen and heard your fill of Modern English for a while. Both Face of Wood and now the heartbreakingly overplayed I Melt With You come from the band's second album called After the Snow. If I may say so, it is one of my all-time favorite albums. Vocalist Robbie Grey, Gary McDowell, Michael Conroy, Richard Brown, and Stephen Walker put together a sound that resonates with me more than any other: guitars, percussion, excellent vocal timbre and just the right level of keyboard accoutrements. I'm pretty sure that is the reason I fell in love with New Order and mid-80s The Cure as well. Produced by Hugh Jones, who did a lot of work with Echo and the Bunnymen, and released in 1983, After the Snow has great melodies, lovely arrangements and every song hits the sweet spot. And though I Melt With You was re-recorded and re-issued in '90, used in a Burger King ad, a Hershey ad, a Ritz ad, a Taco Bell ad and in cover form by Nouvelle Vague for automaker GMC, and overplayed on 80s flashback radio shows everywhere, if you can somehow transport yourself back in time and try to remember how you felt when you first heard it, you'll recall just how amazing this song still is. A little Modern English trivia: The band formed in Colchester, Essex in 1977 and were originally called The Lepers. Thankfully that didn't stick. Heaven is Waiting from Danse Society represents the pinnacle of the band's early output. Kind of like B-Movie, they suffered from poor timing, ill-conceived decisions from label management and never really were able to capitalize on momentum. While recording the material for the Heaven is Waiting album, the guys sought to work with Ian Broudie, who produced for Echo and the Bunnymen, had his own band Care and later went on to form The Lightning Seeds. Anyway, Ian had other projects in the works and the band instead teamed up with Nigel Gray, who had worked with the Police and Siouxsie and the Banshees. It should have been a good fit, but Gray apparently had a rigid schedule consisting of 10am -5pm sessions. The problem was that even if a session was going well, he would call it a day at 5pm. The result was an album that, according to keyboardist Lyndon Scarfe, "was dull, lifeless, uninspired, and depressed the shit out of us." While the guys did eventually hook up with Brodie to retool the tracks, their Arista label decided to release the Stones cover 2000 Light Years from Home as their third single, something the band fought adamantly to prevent. Despite a video and a huge promotional push, the single failed to chart and it thus began their ultimate demise. Shame, really.  As founder of 415 Records, Howie Klein brought bands like Wire Train, Translator, Until December and Red Rockers to the fore. He later went on to become the President of Reprise Records from 1989 until 2001. In this episode, you'll hear one of the ultimate sexual equivocations from the 80s in the track Never Say Never by Romeo Void, another one of Klein's finds. Lead singer Deborah Iyall is Native American and if anyone could look less like how she sounds, Deborah would certainly qualify with her half-spoken, half-sung style. Though Romeo Void disbanded in 1985, she did a couple of solo albums and, having teamed up with songwriter Peter Dunne, is still performing live today, though they haven't quite generated the buzz that she and her band did in 1982 with this tune. That's all for this episode. As always, if you like any of the music you hear, please support the artists. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the image above is from artist Patrick Nagel. His iconic work appeared on the cover of the Rio album by Duran Duran, though an alternate image was used on the 2001 limited edition remastered version. Nagel died in 1984 at the young age of 38. He was found dead in his car after suffering an apparent heart attack. Ironically, he had earlier participated in a 15-minute celebrity Aerobathon to support the American Heart Association.  So, on that happy note ... but I'll be back again soon with another episode, so there's that! Thanks again to everyone for your continued support.

She never fit into the “rock star mold” that the record company wanted her in. Now she’s playing by her own rulesDebora Iyall fronted the Eighties band Romeo Void, who scored a pair of MTV hits in the biting “Never Say Never,” and the funky “Girl in Trouble is a Temporary Thing,” before calling it quits in 1985. After a brief stint as a solo artist, Iyall left the music business altogether to concentrate on art and teaching. Now, she’s got a brand-new album of material called Stay Strong. Icon Fetch talks her about the different directions her new music has taken, the inspiration behind some of the songs, and how Michael Jackson inspired her song “A Girl in Trouble.”
