“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we're going to continue on with some more 80s deep diving with pat mAcdonald from the band Timbuk 3. The band is most well known for their 1986 hit “The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades,” but they were far more prolific than just that one song. They released six albums in the decade between 1986 and 1995 and Tom went on to record numerous other albums and collaborated with artists as varied as Cher, Jackson Browne, and Stewart Copeland of the Police. The Late Bronze Age temple at Tell Azekah in the Judean Shephelah has us wondering, why does it face the sun, why is it so small, how often was it used, and how could you possibly have a wedding there? Not that we're looking for a place, mind you. With an obvious and well deserved shoutout to Timbuk 3!

Cary Baker was a Chicago music writer and fanzine creator who made a good impression on R.E.M. and wound up running publicity for the band and its label, I.R.S. Records. There he also worked with the Go-Go's, General Public, Fine Young Cannibals, the Alarm, Concrete Blonde and Timbuk 3, whom he got booked onto Saturday Night Live. After R.E.M. left the label, Baker did too, moving to Capitol Records and working with Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, the Smithereens and other big names. Eventually he formed his own firm, Conqueroo (a Chicago blues reference), and represented acts including the one that changed his life as a college student: Cheap Trick. Baker recently retired after 42 years of adventures in the publicity game, and he has stories to tell.
Born to a single, loving, hippie mother and possessing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers, Brandi Merolla didn't recognize the brightly lit storefront at 4th & Broadway. She was on her way home in the fall of 1983 when she came upon this neon temple. As she walked up to open the door, she saw a sign that said “HELP WANTED”. Brandi asked for an application and when the clerk at the Info Desk saw her resume and her art background she told Brandi “Why don't you apply for the Art Department?” Brandi had no idea that this new, huge record store employed artists and soon her life would change in a way she couldn't imagine. On this week's episode, Brandi Merolla takes us through her time at Tower during the infancy of Store 125 in The Village and all the opportunities and events she was a part of during this fascinating time in Tower's history. Brandi created backdrop displays for the in stores of Iggy Pop, Fela, Kate Bush, The Cure, Souxsie & the Banshees, Lou Reed, Paul Young, Violent Femmes, Timbuk 3, Samantha Fox, and Max Roach.4th & Broadway's front window was prime NYC real estate and Brandi tells us about a time she got a thumbs up from an artist whose work she recreated in the window and then later collaborating with The Beastie Boys for their window display before their debut “Licensed To Ill” came out. Hint: They didn't get everything they wanted. Hers is a story of opportunity, loss and ultimately redemption. When Brandi left Tower, it wasn't on her terms. But despondent over losing this $4.25 an hour job she would have gladly continued to work, someone whispered in her ear that this was the best thing that could have ever happened to her. Soon Brandi was taking all of the skills she learned at Tower and making foam core displays for 90% of the record labels based in NYC. She also parlayed this into a position with FAO Schwartz and a 20 year affiliation with The Howard Stern show where she has probably been exposed to more foam core displays of Gary Dellabate's teeth than anyone in the tri-state area. Join us for this fascinating story on “2500 DelMonte Street: The Oral History of Tower Records”. Also, we open this week's episode with a tribute to Patti Drosins, wife of Russ Solomon who passed away at the end of November 2022.

A minha preferida é All I Want for Christmas do Timbuk 3, que a gente escuta logo de cara. My family moved to a new house today. The future looks bright (cue Timbuk 3), but right now, things are a bit crazy. I muse here about moving, coffee, the "F" words, and other matters. Short episode. Regular episodes resume next week.

A minha preferida é All I Want for Christmas do Timbuk 3, que a gente escuta logo de cara. (Part Two) Our investigation into the philosophical roots of social justice continues... Dr. Stephen Hicks is a Professor of Philosophy at Rockford College and the Executive Director of The Center For Ethics and Entrepreneurship. He joins me today to discuss the consequences of postmodernism as a political/education project. Discussed: - Words as weapons - Do the postmodernists of the mid-20th century set out to undermine the enlightenment? - The philosophical movement has a long philosophical lineage dating back to Rousseau and the German idealists, it comes to prominence in the 1960s - What's confusing for the novice here - These people looked back the enlightenment, reason as a starting point instead of faith and superstition, how did they look at dividends that were paid, that they were the beneficiaries of, science, engineering, medicine, free markets, abolition, spreading materal wealth, emergence of leisure time, near universal literacy and not say this is something we could improve upon? But instead, this is something to be undone or attacked? - Postmodern art - Hypothesis: post-modernism is the crisis of faith for the academic left (it's how socialism moves forward) Bumper Music: "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" Timbuk 3 Well I'm well aware of the world out there, getting blown all to bits, but what do I care? This week we're looking at 1986 -- a year that was so bright, we had to wear shades. (At least that's what Timbuk 3 told us, and we've learned to trust their judgment.) 'Twas the year Crocodile Dundee came to America, Mr. Miyagi went back to Okinawa, and Rodney Dangerfield went back to school. (And so did C. Thomas Howell, in a super-inappropriate way.) Meanwhile, we thought we'd save the world by lining up and holding hands with millions of creepy strangers. (What could go wrong?) But at least the radio was still bursting with wonderful 80s pop -- and so Kevin and Kornflake share a Top 4 1/2 List of the songs of 1986! Prepare to dance on the ceiling, walk like an Egyptian, or just Wang Chung tonight. Also: We announce our New Year's resolutions. And they're sort of ridiculous.
