Lora Logic in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.essential-logic.co.uk/ https://essentiallogic.bandcamp.com/ fter co-founding X-Ray Spex, Lora Logic formed Essential Logic in 1978, shaping post-punk with unique sax, whimsical melodies. Their 1979 album, 'Beat Rhythm News,' stood out. After a long hiatus, Essential Logic returned in 2022 with 'Land of Kali.' Essential Logic are an English post-punk band formed in 1978 by saxophonist Lora Logic after leaving X-Ray Spex. The band initially consisted of Lora on vocals, Phil Legg on guitar and vocals, William Bennett (later of Whitehouse) on guitar, Mark Turner on bass guitar, Rich Tea (Richard Thompson) on drums and Dave Wright on saxophone. Turner was later replaced by Sean Oliver (later of Rip, Rig & Panic) on bass. The band split in 1981 and reformed in 2001.

This episode features singer and saxophonist Lora Logic and it's a wild story. It actually begins with her mother's escape from her rural Finnish farm upbringing. It shaped how she raised Lora. But it was that farm where Lora felt most happy. She talks about going through several instruments before she fell in love with the sax. And then there's her creepy sax teacher who made her really uncomfortable but pushed her into busking and improvising. She joined X-Ray Spex but was canned before the first album was released. She released the first Essential Logic single and that is QUITE a story! After living the rock and roll lifestyle, having an epileptic fit, and having an out of body experience, she left music completely. Well, not exactly. She DID perform with the band Juggernaut after becoming a Hare Krishna. Her return to music has been one of reformation. Initially with X-Ray Spex and then Essential Logic. She's released a box set of EVERYTHING she's ever done! You can't get more comprehensive than that. She's also released a wonderful new Essential Logic album called Land Of Kali. "This piece is about the struggle between different rhythmic forces – the natural (organic) and the made. But also it is a struggle between the large, loudness of ice breaking up against the quietness of the lonely ice land. "I was initially struck about how rhythmic the sound was, and when thinking about how to create the piece I began by thinking about other similar rhythmic patterns I have come across – steam trains and weaving machines – both made and industrial. These seem a good contrast to the natural and organic sounds from the original recording and fit with an idea of a struggle between nature and human intervention. "I isolated one other sound that I could make out from the recording – a sound that made me think of a foghorn. I used this a signal sound. "Lastly I decided that there should be a contrast section which echoed this big expanse of remoteness, and as I have built up quite a collection of ‘wind' sounds created on my flute I used some I recorded binaurally for another project. "I used Logic X to edit the sounds and remix and as with many of my pieces I used a mixture of reverb and delays to change the sounds. I also used automation control of volume and panning in my mix." Narwhal reimagined by Jessica Rowland. Composition by Celestial Noise Disco. "This track is a rhythmic loft ambient meditation on summer sun, grass stains, breathless laughter, and the carefree attitude of a kid at his grandparents' place in small town America in the early 80s as remembered through old and faded Polaroids. "The piece is constructed entirely from the original sample of a Polaroid camera taking pictures (Polaroid i-zone). Though the Polaroid i-Zone was not introduced until 1999 and is not the same Polaroid cameras around in the 80s (the Supercolor, SX, and Sun were all cameras that people in my childhood had), the i-Zone could itself be considered a pale copy of a Polaroid camera. This makes the sound of the i-Zone itself nostalgic for the sound of a more robust non-toy Polaroid instant camera and thus allows that sound to be readily adapted for the nostalgic vibes of this track. "The sample has been cut, chopped, filtered, stretched, effected, modified, glitched, and layered into its current form. Software includes: Cubasis 3, AUM, Patterning 2, and Eventide and AudioDamage effects (Apps) as well as Ableton Live, Logic X, and Izotope, Waves, and Cherry Audio VSTs (Mac). "The track is best listened to through headphones for the subtle distinctions in the background ambience." This is part of the Obsolete Sounds project, the world's biggest collection of disappearing sounds and sounds that have become extinct – remixed and reimagined to create a brand new form of listening. Virtual Underground : How has this BRÄLLE story started ? BRÄLLE : Began back in 2017 on the heels of my touring days winding down. I spent the previous 10 years touring with another band, and I needed to do something on my own, completely outside my comfort zone. Virtual Underground : Where do you generally draw your inspiration from ? BRÄLLE : This is a difficult question to summarize, but the one thing that's stayed true through all my musical experiences is to draw inspiration from outside your own scene. Shoegaze, Ambient, Black Metal, Goth Rock, or Synth Pop all play their own role in my songwriting process. Virtual Underground : Could you describe your music selection and mixing process ? BRÄLLE : This mix took a second to really find my stride, as is usually the case. You play with tone and groove a lot in the beginning until finally finding your path. I think of it like walking in the dark when you turn off the lights, it takes a second until your eyes adjust in the darkness before knowing where you should go. Virtual Underground : Which software/hardware did you use for this set ? BRÄLLE : This was recorded on my cd's at home into Logic X, where I add various atmospheric layers on-the-fly as the mix progresses. Virtual Underground : What about the scene in Brooklyn? BRÄLLE : The scene in Brooklyn is healthy and exciting for a newcomer. There is a lot of impressive local talent, innovating after-hour crews and a solid stream of underground acts every weekend. It is certainly the best scene within North America. Virtual Underground : What are your next plans ? BRÄLLE : My next plans are to focus more on live performance and Dj'ing within my scene and work on releasing the mountain of tracks that I have finished. I tend to stockpile my creations until I get lost in them. Lots more to come! Follow BRÄLLE @bralletechno

It's probably not a surprise, but I've really been digging the whole Bristol/London bass house/garage vibe that's been happening over the last couple of years. Those influences have clearly rubbed off in a production that I did for the first time ever in Logic X - or even on a Mac for that matter. I'm new to the Mac world, so I wanted to see how well something would turn out in a program I had really no experience using. This is unsigned. It's a new direction for me. It's also the first track of many that I have been working on after several years away from production.
