Eric, TG (the girlfriend) and Gertie are finally (probably) going to visit Veranda Beach! It's especially exciting since Veranda Beach is our new show sponsor; it's easy to promote something you already love! What Stacy DOESN'T love is eye doctors that suggest blepharoplasty and dress shopping. Eric had been “dating” himself by going alone to concerts, including seeing The Wedding Present and Art Brut. When it comes to how they spend their free time, Stacy and Eric are an odd couple which also happens to be Stacy's Cultural Blindspot this week – The Odd Couple movie based on a Neil Simon play. While Stacy yucked it up, Eric found the Treasure of The Sierra Madre which is another movie on the AFI's list of 100 American films to see. Both movies were recommended to watch even if the score of the latter movie was meh. Eric also recommends DTF Saint Lewis which is not what you might expect. As for the weekly debate, there's no debate, however base it may seem, women prefer tall men. You could argue all others get the short stick! "Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. I'm so excited to have Eddie Argos on the show this week! As the frontman for Art Brut, he turned autobiographical oversharing into an art form — writing songs about his little brother, an old flame named Emily, and the joy of forming a band. Twenty years after the debut record Bang Bang Rock & Roll, the band are still going strong. Today, he tells us about the unexpected thing that changed him maybe more than music ever did. The band Art Brut has been making excitable, eccentric indie rock since their debut LP Bang Bang Rock N Roll was released in the UK back in 2005. The music is catchy, hook-laden, guitar-based indie rock. The lyrics are delivered in a kind of speech-song by Eddie Argos; they could be about falling in love or hitting the dance floor, but they're just as likely to tell us a story of a double-crossing superhero or the joys of riding public transportation. Art Brut delivers a gleefully feral set of songs from their vast catalogue (including the recent second volume of a boxed set, Sorry, That It Doesn't Seem Like It's Planned! Battling Satan 2009-2020) to play in-studio. Set list: 1. Formed a Band 2. Emily Kane 3. She Kissed Me and It Felt Like A Hit

KIW018.

The first Art Brut album, Bang Bang Rock & Roll, came out in 2005. The buzz started slowly, but then Pitchfork gave it an 8.9 rating and things took off from there. Four more LP's followed from 2007 to 2018. We got a chance to talk with bandleader Eddie Argos about his musical career and his love for Chicago. Art Brut is touring this spring, playing that first record as well as a few more greatest hits. They hit the Subterranean in Chicago on April 15th.Time Stamps:2: What are some of your favorite musical memories from growing up?4: Did you always want to be in a band?5:30: How did you make your way to London?9:30: Is it odd for you to feel like the driving force, but you don't play an instrument?11:30: What was the original plan for Art Brut?12:30: The Pitchfork review - positive fallout from that review.16:40: When Bang Bang came out, did it feel like everything was falling into place, or was it more complicated than that?20:30: Did you feel internal pressure following up Bang Bang Rock & Roll?24:30: Are you feeling pressure and comparing yourself against your peers in the art-wave scene coming out of London?26:15: When recording the follow up are you the driving force telling people what your vision is and say we need to make this happen?27:35: Do you have any regrets or things you'd wished you'd done early during the early stages of the band?29:30: Did you feel like you had to keep going and couldn't afford to take any time off?30:25: Being a comic book fan, how has it impacted your music?32:11: How do you hook up with Frank Black?37:50: Art Brut is a band that a lot of musicians love, who are some artists that you have been surprised love your band?39:45: Talk to us about how your upcoming tour came together.42: What do you love about Chicago?45:23: Are there plans for any new music?46:10: What is your writing process like?47:20: Are you ever surprised by the bands that you've inspired?49: Thick or thin crust pizza?50:10: What is your favorite venue to play in Chicago?52:30: What do you think makes Chicago such a unique music scene?53:40: What is your go to cheap drink?54:50: Anything you want to plug on the way on out of here?

On today's episode, I talk to artist Jamie McKelvie. Born in London, Jamie came to prominence in the world of comics through his collaborations with Kieron Gillen. In 2003, the two started a comic strip in PlayStation Magazine that lasted for three years. This led to their book Phonogram in 2006, and its subsequent sequels, as well as Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. He's also illustrated stories and designed characters for Marvel on books like Cable, The Defenders, X-Men, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel among others and created art for bands such as CHVRCHES, Art Brut and Tegan & Sara. Most recently, Jamie has been writing and drawing his own series One for Sorrow, which is being published by DSTLRY! On Indiecast, Steven and Ian try to keep the gap between what we talk about privately in the DM's and what we talk about on the show as narrow as possible. But given all the weird online discourse this week, that just wasn't possible in this episode. Between all the Boygenius gatekeeping and "state of music criticism" chatter, it was a very odd bunch of days online. Oh, and as if things were bad enough: Fall Out Boy released an updated version of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" covering the years between 1989 and now. The whole ordeal provoked another anti-Fall Out Boy rant from Steven (8:25).Thankfully, the guys found solace in the mailbag (16:14). Listeners came through with some very good topics: Is it possible to separate your "critic" brain from your "fan" brain? How important are record labels now as arbiters of quality? What makes a good concert T-shirt? Also, the guys "yay or nay" the aughts era indie band Art Brut, which prompted a Fall Out Boy-style rant from Ian.Finally, in Recommendation Corner (55:48), Ian talks up arty metalheads Loma Prieta while Steven stumps for the mellow Michigan folk-rock band Bonny Doon.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Hey all! For the season three premiere, I sat down with W. Maxwell Prince & Martín Morazzo, creator of Image's "Art Brut." This comic follows an art detective with the ability to dive into the paintings. W. Maxwell Prince wrote the story, inspired by a family of art historians. Martín was excited about the challenge because it tested his drawing and graphic design skills. "ART BRUT" is a beautiful comic available on the Image Comics site or your local shop. Joining us for episode 101 is the artist behind She Could Fly, a Berger Books miniseries with writer Christopher Cantwell, the co-creator of Image titles Snowfall and Great Pacific with writer Joe Harris, and possibly his most notable work to date: the hit horror anthology through Image Comics Ice Cream Man with writer W. Maxwell Prince.More recently, he and the aforementioned W. Maxwell Prince have set their sights on Art Brut: which, as the world of fine art is falling apart, only Art Brut knows how to fix it. Alongside the Bureau of Artistic Integrity, Art Brut follows the titular Arthur Brut, the Mad Dreampainter (and his trusty sidekick, Manny the Mannequin) as they dive back into the very paintings that made him insane… in order to save reality itself from crumbling. We are honored to welcome Martín Morazzo onto The Oblivion Bar Podcast!Follow us on TwitterLike us on FacebookFollow us on InstagramConsider supporting us over on PatreonStock up on G Fuel (CODE: OBP)Follow us on Whatnot (GET $10 WITH LINK)
