Most people know Jesus Jones from their big hit in 1991, "Right Here Right Now." Thanks to the explosion of grunge and alternative rock that was already bubbling up from the underground to the mainstream, the techno-rock of Jesus Jones took a back seat and relegated them to one-hit wonder status. But instead of changing their sound to blend in with the loud guitars from Seattle, the band and primary songwriter/singer Mike Edwards went in the opposite direction and leaned into their electronic elements for 1993's Perverse. Recorded entirely on computers, the album marks on the second fully digital release, and the sounds Edwards and band created sound positively futuristic compared the 1993 musical landscape. We continue our series on the best alternative albums of 1991 with Jesus Jones' landmark 1991 album “Doubt.” Combining driving rock bass and guitars with dance-inspired beats and creative use of samples, “Doubt” beautifully captures the essence of 1991, evoking the atmosphere and emotions of a new decade when it seemed anything was possible. ********************** EARLY ACCESS FOR PATREON SUBSCRIBERS! At one point in the 70's everyone was wearing clogs and in the 80's, we were handing out Best Picture awards to movies like, Driving Miss Daisy and calling it a sign of progress. So it's a good idea to check in with your once loved cultural artifacts to make sure you aren't still listening to Jesus Jones or defending Dan Brown books . In that vein, Tom and Azed discuss two movies they both used to really like and now feel a bit less enthusiastic about. Oddly, and completely randomly, both of us chose movies by Kubrick: Lolita (1962) and The Shining (1980). We discuss the difficulty in translating good books to film, the limits of interpretation, and Kubrick's pattern of focusing on what has been called "the banality of evil". Tom also gives us an update on some of his favourite screenings at this years TIFF.
Hello Darkness, My Old Friend, we're in the relegation zone again... You host Andy, Dun and Bill pick the bones out of a disappointing 4 days as the R's early season form hits a sticky patch, and the fans pre-season optimism evaporates. This week's therapy session covers - Zeroes and Ones will not take us there (one for Jesus Jones fans there) - Goals are becoming hard to come by - Le Resistance - Nardi's incredible performance on Saturday, capped by a quadruple save that was all over Twitter at the weekend - Halleluj-aaaaargh. Has Lucas lost it? - Varane ran into hot water, late tackle on Batth leads to early Baath. - Why does it always rain on us? Travis scores deflection to put Rovers 1-0 up - Batth drains the life out of the game, tapping in from close range to make it 2. - Rangers score from open play but man of the match Pawson sees something no one else does and rules out Smyth's strike - Fans Forum gives cause for optimism - Marti, Xavi and JCS extend their stay - Dembele here to stay - Long term plan. Patience, patience, patience - Home comforts as the R's host Hull - R's fast start denied by perfect Pandur - Hull bring the Drameh to go 1-0 up. WHY DO WE HAVE TO ALWAYS GO 1-0 DOWN - Defensive disaster leaves Bedia alone in the box to make it 2 - Madsen scores the greatest penalty ever taken to bring us closer before the break - Second half sludge. Miller's third condems R's to lose 2 in 4 days. - There seems to be some hope in Saito, but can we cope right now? Nope - Major Mayoral Maelstrom. Mayhem! - Can't bring ourselves to talk about the election in Democracy Manifest. Too Depressing... - Too depressed for a Blighty Bulletin - Predictions: Our friends at Derby next. Can we salvage some Pride at at a prickly Pride Park? - One of us starts actually crying. (This may not actually be true) Can someone give us a hug? or at least 5 Stars, That might cheers us up a bit

This week, Mike Edwards sits in to discuss the writing and recording of the 1991 hit single from Jesus Jones, “Right Here, Right Now." The conversation explores the creation and impact of the song, including the inspiration behind it and the cultural context of the time. Mike opens up about the poignant lyrics, highlighting references to Tracy Chapman and the Cold War. He also discusses the band's deliberate blending of rock, house, and hip-hop influences, which helped them stand out in the early 90s alternative rock scene. The episode examines the production techniques used and touches on the band's success, having created a song that still lives on in pop culture today. If you were putting together an informercial for a compilation of ‘90s hits, it's almost certain that a clip of Jesus Jones “Right Here Right Now” would snag a good 8 second chunk of it. This incredibly optimistic alternative rock anthem captured the essence of revolutionary change in Europe and beyond, just a few months before the rise of grunge music made apathy seem decidedly cooler. Joining us this week is Mike Doyle, bassist for Lanemeyer and host of the podcast This Was The Scene, and together we dive into the enduring impact of this widely acclaimed hit. This week, Jesus Jones embarks on their first US tour in 30 years! It's short, just a few shows over a couple of weeks, but it's, hopefully, the beginning of restoring a relationship with the states that will grow in the near future. Since lead singer Mike Edwards was on the show a few years ago, we are joined this time by keyboardist (and band manager) Iain Baker to not only explain the circumstances of the tour, but deep dive their 1991 breakthru Doubt while he's at it. We learn what influenced hits like "International Bright Young Thing", "Real Real Real" and, of course, "Right Here Right Now". He also gives his passionate feelings about everyone from Milli Vanilli to Michael Hutchence. It's a blast and even emotional in some parts. Enjoy! www.jesusjones.com

Interview by Kris PetersWhat do you do as you near the twilight of an illustrious music career?Set course for Australia, apparently! After pushing 40 years in the music industry, English alternative rock outfit Pop Will Eat Itself have finally decided to bring their pasty white legs Down Under for the first show of their careers on our shores in February and March of next year. The loveable poms have promised to treat their neglected fans to a set of Greatest Hits, and, just to soften the blow, have invited UK indie/dance/rock outfit Jesus Jones to share in the fun with them.It is an upbeat and lively union of bands, with Jesus Jones frontman Mike Edwards stopping in for a chat with HEAVY to get us acquainted. We start by asking what delights Jesus Jones have in store for their Australian fans."You've put me on the spot there," he laughed. "Delights? Don't know if it's delights. It makes it sound like we should be bringing Frankincense and Myrrh (laughs). I was gonna say the same thing that we normally do, but it's not quite right… My strapline for this tour is 'all of the energy you're used to seeing, all the songs you wanna hear, but this time played better than they were in the past. How's that?"In reality, either band could have come over here by themselves and pulled decent crowds around the country, so we quiz Mike as to why they chose to come together."They're a band that we have a lot of affinity with," he replied. "We've played with them in various guises before and done tours with them. Great bunch of guys, easy to get on with, plus, more than anything else, do you want to go to Australia? Hell yes!"In the full interview, Mike tells us what we can expect from Jesus Jones' shows, being aware of your limitations as you grow older, the early days of the band and where they fit in, coming up with their eclectic sound, being part of a musical movement that changed the musical landscape, future plans and more.
Welcome to The Stupid And Contagious podcast, a podcast focused on bringing you interviews with the bands that defined a generation! That generation grew up in the 90s with the Grebo bands (Senseless Things, PWEI, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Mega City Four, The Wonderstuff and many more) on the UK side of the pond and quickly joined by the grunge bands (Nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and many more) on the US side of the pond.We are not limiting ourselves to these genres though, we will chart the guitar bands from all genres throughout the decade that was the 1990s.Episode 15 is all about Jesus Jones! We speak to keyboard and samples extraordinaire Iain Baker about the bands incredible success in the early 90s as well as what we can expect from Jesus Jones in the future! If you are into 1990s guitar music or just a music lover in general then this is the podcast for you! Please also subscribe and follow the podcast on the social media links belowStupid & Contagious PodcastItunes https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/stupid-contagious/id1705645715All the Socials! https://linktr.ee/stupidandcontagiousFacebook https://www.facebook.com/stupidandcontagiouspodcastYoutube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfPJ5FhcYAHO7UhrRtTtgGwInstagram https://www.instagram.com/stupidandcontagiouspodcast/Spotify MIXTAPE:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1b4lO3cjwu5AJXVYxPDCWV Hosted on Acast. Beat. Percussion. Rytme. Trommer. Sting, IAMX, Colin Blunstone, Howard Jones, Blue For Two, XTC, Jesus Jones, og Freur (pre-Underworld).

If you're a fan of 90's alt-rock and are curious what your fave artists of the era are up to, this book is meant for you!
