It's another concert report, as we leave the house and creep down to Rhode Island to see Flopcast favorite Joan Osborne! And since Joan's big hit album (and that song - you know the one) came out way back in 1995, we're looking at the other albums we bought that year. There were lots of 1995 records from the women of the Boston rock scene (Juliana Hatfield, Mary Lou Lord, Belly, Letters to Cleo), as well as plenty more Lilith-friendly artists (Jewel, Ani DiFranco, Aimee Mann). We also recall the debut of Ben Folds Five, a weird covers album from Elvis Costello, and a band only Kornflake remembers. Plus: The Top Ten movies of 1995, a 90s edition of The Pudding Pages, and Happy Birthday to the guy who co-wrote all those Alanis songs. (Isn't this podcast ironic? No, it is not.) How the hell did that happen?   Well that’s a good question! We thought it was a good question anyway and we hope you, our good listeners do too, we being Boston based singer-songwriter Mary Lou Lord and Melbourne based musician and music writer Maryanne Window.   Mary Lou and Maryanne have been musical collaborators for the past 6 years. Having connected over their love of good songs and a series of musical parallels, they began writing and recording together and formed a fast friendship. They both found that they had a multitude of funny stories from their involvement in the music industry during its corporate hey day – the 1990s – where money still flowed and artists were wined and dined and indulgence was at a prime.   Mary Lou Lord has been known to tell many a cracking yarn via her Facebook page and the question was asked – “When are you going to write a book Mary Lou?” Rather than write a book for now, Mary Lou is going to be telling some of her stories here in this podcast and together with Maryanne, will be asking some of her favourite artists and friends some of their “How the Hell Did That Happen?” moments of life.

Our guest for episode 22 is the musician Mary Lou Lord. Mary Lou was great friends with Elliott. The two of them met at a gig in Seattle arranged by Slim Moon, the founder of the record label Kill Rock Stars. She was already on the label and, of course, Elliott would soon follow.  In this interview we talk through Mary Lou's favourite song choice, hear more about the time she saw Elliott for the first time and how they started touring.  **Extra things to look at / listen to:** I Figured You Out by Elliott Smith on Either/Or (2017 issue): [https://open.spotify.com/track/5NlQ8We8fhLVGDjO2LfB5i?si=XhNQ71E0SJyC9hBw6pEAng](https://open.spotify.com/track/5NlQ8We8fhLVGDjO2LfB5i?si=XhNQ71E0SJyC9hBw6pEAng) I Figured You Out by Mary Lou Lord: [https://open.spotify.com/track/7FZGxzuLt649qwmTqUtYYP?si=xkdAXCqcRQCplYvGQkj3jg](https://open.spotify.com/track/7FZGxzuLt649qwmTqUtYYP?si=xkdAXCqcRQCplYvGQkj3jg) Mary Lou covering Half Right by Elliott Smith/Heatmiser: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25BdmZGG1s0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25BdmZGG1s0) Mary Lou interviewing Elliott for Spin magazine in 1998: [https://www.spin.com/2018/10/elliott-smith-interview-1998-mary-lou-lord/](https://www.spin.com/2018/10/elliott-smith-interview-1998-mary-lou-lord/) My Favourite Elliott Smith Song is produced by Rob Comba and Elizabeth Withstandley. Jenny Zigrino is still very much a comic on the rise. In the past two years, she has played notable roles in films like Bad Santa 2 and Fifty Shades of Black. Last year, she released her debut album, JZ's New Album, had her own Comedy Central Half Hour, and co-hosted an IFC digital series called The Filling Is Mutual with Jen Saunderson. In 2018, she's already appeared on Live from Here (formerly Prairie Home Companion) and has a Web series debuting in March for Comedy Central called Bad Ass Bitches of History. I covered her when she was getting started in stand-up in Boston a few years back, and for this interview, brought along a mutual friend, comedian and actor Jessie Baade. That made for a fun conversation, talking of course about Zigrino's current projects and future plans, but also about the body-positive and sex-positive philosophy she applied in her stand-up, the power of burlesque, the isolation of touring, and a lot more. We started the conversation talking about a podcast Zigrino and fellow comedian Gary Petersen had thought of producing in which they cured their boredom on tour by creating characters inspired by the people they meet. They abandoned the idea, but I'm hoping not forever. Our featured track this week comes from former podcast guest Matt Minigell, who appeared way back in episode 14 with Mary Lou Lord and Annabelle Lord-Patey. He's got a new album out now called Guts, and the featured track from that, “Even In My Dreams (I'm Falling),” is available now on BandCamp.

Kevin and Kornflake are back in Chickentown after a goofy road trip to Vermont, where they found bugs, mud, and other constant reminders that they should never leave the house. But hey, in addition to all that pesky nature, there was a "Weird Al" Yankovic concert! Well played, Vermont. We also note the closing of T. T. the Bear's Place, a legendary club that was the heart of Boston's rock scene for decades. TT's was the site of countless shows by some of our favorite performers (including Ed's Redeeming Qualities, Mojo Nixon, The Shods, Mary Lou Lord, Freezepop, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and yes, the Christmas Chickens), and we'll miss it. (These days, not enough rock clubs are named after pet hamsters, and it's killing the music industry.) Also: We look ahead to Boston Comic Con, learn that mustard belongs in a museum, and suspect that Kevin might be a zombie.
