Do the charts have the same relevance they once did? Annie and Nick discuss the potential reasons why there are no UK artists in the annual global top 10 for the first time since 2003. Elsewhere, Kate Bush is one of a thousand musicians behind a silent album to protest the government's proposed changes to copyright law. Should we be worried about artists having their identities stolen, or should we embrace change? Plus, Rihanna is set to release new music but it won't be “radio digestible”, Lola Young has a tough question, and Nick's back on the radio. Get in touch with Annie and Nick! Richard Bellia  in conversation with David Eastaugh https://richardbellia.com/ Photographer Richard Bellia was there when it mattered carrying his trusted camera to capture moments in music's vast cannon of historical importance, some which now forms his own tapestry of work in Un œil sur la musique 1980-2016 i.e. An eye on music 1980-2016. The intro to the book says ‘'a thousand photos: breathe the same air as the musicians, feel the bass, the riffs and the silences, sixtieth of a second per sixtieth of a second.'' With this in mind its hard not to get stuck straight in with the mammoth heavyweight volume of photos infront of you. The first striking images come from prime Punk era via Denmark Street, John Lydon looking grimacingly at the camera in the studio and on stage with PiL, Joe Strummer looking cool as holding his guitar towards the camera, Topper Headon, Mick Jones and leather clad Paul Simonon all looking equally stunning in separate shots.

“Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week's guest might not be someone you're super familiar with, but she's got an incredible story and is well worth your time seeking out. It's Pearl Harbour. In 1980, she had a minor hit with the song “Driving” with her band Pearl Harbour and the Explosions. After the band broke up, she got involved with the Clash's bassist Paul Simonon and moved to London, becoming quickly enamored with a more rock and roll sound. She recorded the rockabilly album “Don't Follow Me, I'm Lost Too,” which got lost in the world of record company politics but found a new life this year with the re-issue on Liberation Hall Records. Her story is fascinating and filled with other icons of the era - have a listen and discover a new voice! A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the The Clash together with their 1979 album 'London Calling' in (just under) thirty minutes. The Clash achieved critical and commercial success in the UK with the release of their eponymous debut album and second album Give 'Em Enough Rope however, it was their experimental third album London Calling, released in 1979, that earned them popularity in the United States.Produced by Guy Stevens at Wessex Sound Studios, the album bridged the traditional punk rock sound with a new wave aesthetic. London Calling also reflects the band's growing interest in styles beyond their punk roots, including reggae, rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock. The album artwork was designed by artist Ray Lowry and was an homage to Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album. The cover features a photograph of Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass (now on display at the Museum of London) against the stage at the Palladium in New York City on 20 September 1979. Pennie Smith, who photographed the band for the album, originally did not want the photograph to be used as the image was not in focus. In 2004, a 25th-anniversary Legacy Edition was released with a bonus CD and DVD in digipack packaging. The bonus CD features The Vanilla Tapes, missing recordings made by the band in mid-1979. The DVD includes The Last Testament – The Making of London Calling, a film by Don Letts, as well as previously unseen video footage and music videos. London Calling was among the ten album covers chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of Classic Album Cover postage stamps issued in 2010.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

Baxie talks to singer Pearl Harbour from Pearl Harbour & The Explosions! In 1979, Pearl and her band released their self-titled debut album which spawned the New Wave hit, "Drivin'". Unfortunately, due to musical difference, the band broke up before recording a follow up record. In 1980, Pearl released her first Rockabilly solo album, "Don't Follow Me. I'm Lost Too". The backup band on that record included Mick Jones, Topper Headon, and her future husband Paul Simonon of The Clash! The album, which is finally being reissued by Liberation Hall records is terrific. But the story behind that record is even more incredible! Listen on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, Spotify, and on the Rock102 website! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee

We discuss his excellent book "Teenage Kicks: My Life as an Undertone" (Omnibus Press) and he picks some of his favourite songs and music that had an impact on the early days of The Undertones. Sadly, we recorded the episode the day that Seymour Stein passed away, so Mickey pays tribute to his former Sire Records label boss and picks his favourite Sire Records release. Throughout the show, we discover his influences as a bassist, some of his favourite music related books and authors, how he missed Paul Simonon smashing his bass while touring with The Clash, the influence of Lenny Kaye's "Nuggets" compilation and he picks some pivotal early Undertones tracks. We also cover last year's excellent compilation of the best of the current Paul McLoone fronted line-up "Dig What You Need". As you would expect, Mickey is entertaining company and the episode is soundtracked by loads of Mickey's superb musical choices including Ramones, David Bowie, The Jam, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Dr, Feelgood, Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Rolling Stones and 13th Floor Elevators.

Par ex : The Fanny's, ça claque non ? The Green Garden ou The Dirty Window ou The Night Roasters, les torréfacteurs de nuit, ou The Knight Rooster, le chevalier coq. Ça y est, je sens que je suis en pleine vague de créativité : The High Crane, la grue élevée, The Crawling Pigs, les cochons rampants, The Marmalade Heads, les têtes de marmelade… Les frères Davies : les Kinks ! Enfin The Kinks !

Singer/Songwriter, Troubadour, and Texas Guitar Slinger Gary Myrick drops by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith and Rob about the self-titled debut album by Havana 3am from 1991. Havana 3am took shape when singer Nigel Dixon (of rockabilly band Whirlwind), guitarist Gary Myrick and bassist Paul Simonon (of The Clash) went out riding their motorcycles.  This self-produced album is wickedly sharp and melds surf, punk, rockabilly, traditional rock and adds a healthy Latin influence. For 1990, it was probably a little ahead of its time. Gary talks to the guys about his entire career, which includes meeting Jimi Hendrix, getting shot at while performing in Texas, and replacing Stevie Ray Vaughn. Myrick even plays a little sample of what he is currently working on… and it's amazing, naturally. LINKS: Gary Myrick Havana 3am on Spotify

Established in 1976 at the fore London's punk rock insurgence, The Clash featuring lead singer and guitarist Joe Strummer, lead guitarist and singer Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon and drummer Topper Headon would outlast their peers while creating some of the most influential albums in rock 'n' roll history. In “The Clash: All The Albums All The Songs”, author Martin Popoff dissects each of the Clash's ninety-one studio tracks, examining the circumstances that led to their creation, the recording processes, the historical contexts and more. In addition, introductory essays set the scene for the band's six studio releases (including the double LP ‘London Calling' and the triple ‘Sandinista!') and feature sidebars detailing studios, release dates, personnel, and more. Illustrated with rare performance and offstage photography, along with images of 7-inch singles sleeves and gig posters, the resulting volume is a fitting tribute to the foursome whose staunch political stance and groundbreaking amalgam of punk, rockabilly, reggae, and hip-hop earned the title “The Only Band That Matters.”At approximately 7,900 (with over 7,000 appearing in his books), Popoff has unofficially written more record reviews than anybody in the history of music writing across all genres. He's penned approximately 108 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock, and record collecting. He was Editor-In-Chief of the now retired Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, Canada's foremost metal publication for 14 years, and has also contributed to Revolver, Guitar World, Goldmine, Record Collector, bravewords.com, lollipop.com, and hardradio.com, with many record label band bios and liner notes to his credit as well. Martin has also been a regular contractor to Banger Films, having worked for two years as researcher on the award-winning documentary “Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage”, on the writing and research team for the 11-episode “Metal Evolution” and on the ten-episode “Rock Icons”, both for VH1 Classic. Martin is also the writer of the original metal genre chart used in “Metal: A Headbanger's Journey” and throughout the “Metal Evolution” episodes. Tony Fletcher reunites with musician/composer Jim ‘JG' Thirlwell, DJ Wendy May, and Dimple Records boss Brian O'Neill, all of whom he first met in the late 1970s when they bought copies of Jamming! off him while they were working behind the counter at the Virgin shops in Oxford Walk, Notting Hill Gate, and Marble Arch respectively. During that thriving post-punk period the entire Virgin chain served as a needed middle ground between the pioneering independents like Rough Trade, Probe and Revolver, and mainstream high street shops WH Smiths and Woolworths. Without the autonomy Virgin granted its record buyers, a lot of independent labels, emerging bands and street fanzines would not have enjoyed such a wide profile. In this conversation, the four discuss the role of the record shop during that period, the freedom the staff enjoyed at Virgin, and offer specific anecdotes and reminiscences about serving the likes of Elvis Costello, Boy George, Paul Simonon, David Coverdale and more. Additionally, Jim recalls how an encounter with a customer helped point him on a different creative musical path, Wendy talks of how she ultimately received the classic ultimatum - "it's your job or your band" - and Brian talks of how his love of selling records has inspired him to start a new independent label in his retirement years.JG Thirlwell is at Website http://www.foetus.org https://jgthirlwell.bandcamp.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jgthirlwell/ and https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100045377091477Wendy May can be found on Instagram and Facebook.Brian O'Neill's label Dimple Discs is at https://dimplediscs.bandcamp.com/ His Microdisney documentary project is https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/microdisney-filmFor details about the book events mentioned on this episode visithttps://www.facebook.com/theTonyFletcher/eventsThe Best of Jamming!: Selections and Stories from the Fanzine That Grew Up 1977-86 is published by Omnibus PressTonyFletcher.netOmnibusPress.com 'The Jamming! The Clash got their start as a punk band, though they would move through elements of reggae, ska, funk, and new wave over time.  The debut album eponymously titled The Clash would stay solidly in the punk movement which began trending the year before.  Lead vocalist Pete Strummer and lead guitarist Mick Jones would write most of their original songs.  Other personnel on this album included bassist Paul Simonon and drummers Topper Headon and Terry Chimes (listed as Tory Crimes). The debut album was recorded in three weeks in February 1977 for a cost of 4,000 pounds.  It was released in the UK in April 1977, but would be released in the US in 1979 as their second album.  The US release would see a different track listing, and some songs would be swapped out.  Billed as "The Only Band That Matters", The Clash had signed a record deal with CBS Records in January 1977, and the organization pushed for a cleaner sound on their subsequent albums.  This debut album represents the most consistent punk rock album The Clash would produce.  However, The Clash would also have a staying power which was unusual in bands coming out of the punk movement. Janie JonesThe first song on the album is short, as are most Punk songs and most songs on this album.  The name of the song comes from a minor English pop singer in the 1960's who scandalized the nation in 1973 when she was convicted of running a prostitution ring.White RiotThe idea of this song was to encourage whites to join in with black rioters to fight the establishment.  The Clash was upset when the extreme right wing took this song as an anthem.I'm So Bored With the U.S.A.This is a response to the influx of American TV and culture.  At the time a lot of American shows, particularly detective dramas, were on British TV.  The song was used regularly as a set opener on American tours to (in Strummer's words) "find out if they had a sense of humor." London's BurningThe song is mainly about the punk scene's main choice of drug at the time:  speed.  It can also refer to the city lit up by headlights and streetlights of traffic, and people driving around or watching television with no real purpose in their lives.  The guitar solo near the end of the song is unusual in punk rock, where a more minimalist attitude was typical. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Chevy Van by Sammy Johns (from the motion picture "The Van")The Van was a low-budget teen comedy released in April 1977 that would kick off the genre which would include "Porky's," "Up the Creek." and "Caddyshack." STAFF PICKS:Hotel California by the EaglesBruce leads off the staff picks with the iconic title track to the Eagles' biggest studio album.  It won the Grammy Award for record of the year in 1978.  The band says the song is their interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles - the idea of moving from innocence to experience.  Felder, Henley, and Frey get writing credits, though Joe Walsh came up with the dual-guitar part at the end. Cherry Baby by StarzRob's staff pick is a deeper cut by and American heavy metal band from New Jersey.  Starz never developed a lot of commercial success, but they had a cult following and were influential for a number of bands including Poison, Bon Jovi, and Twisted Sister.  Several of the band members were from the band Looking Glass.Do Ya by the Electric Light OrchestraBrian brings us a hit that Jeff Lynne originally wrote in 1971 for a band called The Move.  Todd Rundgren also recorded this song before ELO's version came out on their album "A New World Record."  This version has a nice balance of rock guitars and symphonic elements typical of ELO.(Get a) Grip (On Yourself) by The StranglersWayne closes out the staff picks with another band that came up in the Punk scene but bridged to a more new wave sound.  The band is unusual for punk bands because of the presence of keyboards.  The song is based on the band's life in Chiddingfold, Surry England.  It is about understanding who you really are and being true to your identity. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Spring Rain by Bebu SilvettiWe finish off with a disco-infused instrumental piece that was on the charts in this month.

And when he's not been parading his talents live on the stages of every stadium, concert hall and festival around the world, he has been a favourite studio bassist and accompanying singer for the biggest recording artists including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, Echo and The Bunnymen and McFly. His one-man show is all about life at the pointy end of the music business; Guy regales audiences with stories from behind the scenes. His self-deprecating wit is irresistible, and his rip-roaring anecdotes are brilliant and outrageous. This is an evening which is both funny and frank with enough insider's references to satisfy even aficionados — and he'll be bringing his beloved vintage Fender bass to demonstrate his craft. Please welcome bassist/ singer/ songwriter/ composer/ record producer /comedian/ actor/ author… best known for performing with Pink Floyd (David Gilmour & Nick Mason) … GUY PRATT to Interviewing the Legends… Purchase My Bass and Other Animals  By GUY PRATT Available at amazon.com Guy Pratt came of age just as playing bass became sexy. In spurning the guitar solo, punk put the low-end on more of an equal footing—or maybe it was just that Paul Simonon and Bruce Foxton were pretty cool. Either way, people were trying out the basslines of "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" or "Peaches." Having dallied with Funkapolitan, Pratt suddenly found himself on Top of the Pops and supporting David Bowie with the smooth Australian outfit Icehouse. At a ludicrously young age he became a sought-after bass player to the stars, finding himself crawling from studios to bars and from hotels to stadiums with the likes of Robert Palmer, Womack & Womack, Bernard Edwards, Bryan Ferry, and David Crosby. The 1980s were in their prime, and with a number of Crolla-suited appearances in windswept videos behind him, he was invited to join Pink Floyd for a series of stadium extravaganzas to make Bono & Co. look fairly modest. He was in The Smiths for a week, has traveled through customs in a wheelchair after a flight with Jimmy Page, spent time in the studio with Michael Jackson, and has lived to tell all. This autobiographical account emerges from the successful stand-up tour of the same name, charting his journey from a Mod band to playing with Roxy Music at Live 8.   For more information  about GUY PRATT Visit www.guypratt.com official website www.facebook.com/guy.pratt.officialebsite facebook https://twitter.com/guypratt twitter https://www.thesaucerfulofsecrets.com/ Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets www.pinkfloyd.com   PURCHASE   RAY'S BEST-SELLING BOOK ENTITLED THE ROCK STAR CHRONICLES SERIES ONE   CHRONICLES, TRUTHS, CONFESSIONS AND WISDOM FROM THE MUSIC LEGENDS THAT SET US FREE  …Order yours today on (Collector edition) Hardcover or E-book at bookbaby.com and amazon.com Featuring over 45 intimate conversations with some of the greatest rock legends the world will ever know. Broken Records - The Search for the Worst Album Ever

Broken Records is often a painful experience, but it's made all the more painful when we're discussing a band as essential and admired as The Clash. Unfortunately, their sixth and final studio album, released on 4 November 1985 by CBS Records, is a record that is truly worthy of the prefix ‘broken'. Lead guitarist and co-principal songwriter Mick Jones and drummer Topper Headon had been dismissed by lead vocalist Joe Strummer and bassist Paul Simonon. Jones and Headon were replaced by three unknowns: guitarists Vince White and Nick Sheppard and drummer Pete Howard, a line-up that Strummer, somewhat sneeringly, referred to as ‘The Clash 2'. During the tense recording sessions, Clash manager Bernie Rhodes and Strummer fought with each other for control over the band's songwriting and musical direction. The band wrote 20 songs for the Cut the Crap sessions, 12 of which ended up on the finished album (God only knows how awful the other 8 are). The songwriting is far from The Clash's best but the real villain of the piece is manager Bernie Rhodes, who's cluttered and hideously unfocused production ruins and squanders whatever negligible integrity the songs might've had.

It's All About The [Iconic Rock] Bass! (Part 4) This episode of #ITWWSS takes another dive into the deep end of a bass guitar shaped pool, where reaching the bottom, we find some of Rock N' Roll's greatest recordings. All the bass players in this show have great skill, soul and their own distinct sound and style. I started playing cello at eight years old. Later in the elementary school orchestra. I wanted to play the upright bass, but I was too small to carry it. I picked up the guitar next. By the time I went to high school in 1967, the Summer Of Love had just taken place. The British Invasion was a few years in. The Doors and Jefferson Airplane just played at a local high school's football field. I'd begun playing guitar in middle school bands, made up of friends. I was playing clarinet in the school orchestra. The Byrds, Monkees, Seeds, Love, Buffalo Springfield, Doors and others were all performing all around L.A. I didn't know at the time that many of those soon to be legends lived about 15 to 20 minutes away, in Laurel Canyon. At about 16 I bought a used Gibson SG Bass, at Saul Betnums Music. Within a day or two, one of the few working high school bands I knew needed to replace their sick bass player, Ed Elowe for a Halloween dance, at a local park. The highly talented Steve Elowe walked me through as many of their songs as possible, including In A Gadda Da Vida, by the Iron Butterfly. I somehow got through the gig, got paid, and became a professional musician. (LOL) As I've been putting together this series of (radio show type) podcasts, the hardest part is choosing what to leave out. There are countless performances by many more bass players that I could ever fit in, plus all the greats I haven't heard of, yet. Part 5 is coming together nicely and I'll do my best to publish it during Black Music Month. It will be the last podcast in the series, but not even close to the last time I'll feature great bassists. I play the bass on all of my original and cover songs. I've only owned three basses in my life. The Gibson bass was traded in towards a new Fender Telecaster. I didn't by another bass until 1994. After the Northridge Earthquake, lots of retail stores had millions of dollars worth of damaged goods. I bought a new Fender Precision Bass that had fallen off the wall and had a gouge in it. As you can imagine, it was sold at a bargain price. I kept it for several years and used it on a few demos, but ended up selling it to a friend in Reno, Nevada. I bought another Fender bass last year, but this time went for a Jazz Bass. I love it to death! Bass is in my bones and DNA. I hope you love it even half as much and enjoy listening to my shows. Perhaps, you'll be inspired to pick up a bass and send me something you've recorded? I'll definitely listen and possibly include it in a podcast. @stewstrauss on Instagram and Twitter In this show you'll hear music from… Jethro Tull, Yes, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles, Cream, Free, The Who, The Clash, Rush, Muse, U2, and Joe Walsh. A heavily British slanted show, no doubt. I came of age during the British Invasion and was heavily influenced by the music that followed. Bassists include… Glen Cornick, Chris Squire, John Deacon, John McVie, Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, Andy Fraser, John Entwhistle, Paul Simonon, Geddy Lee, Chris Woltenholme, Adam Clayton, and George “Chocolate” Perry. Listening to London Calling as a teen required an open mind and a willingness to follow The Clash on an existential and esoteric journey through the darkness of recent history and the darker realms of the human psyche.  It was a bit like a history and philosophy class set to music and it didn't always make sense to me but listen I did, and as I listened, I found myself drawn more and more to the ska and reggae anthems on the album like “Guns of Brixton” with powerful calls to action and layered stories about characters battling impending social chaos and situations that were out of their control.  London Calling was the perfect soundtrack for the dawning of the Republican Party's Darwinian fantasy of “Morning in America” that would begin one year later with the inauguration of Ronald Reagan. As such, The Clash get name checked a lot in Ska Boom and for good reason. London Calling demonstrated The Clash's move from punk rock to explore the sounds of reggae and ska and it resonated with other Gen X musicians in New York, Boston, Chicago and LA who hearing ska and reggae from multiple sources and also looking to raise their own voices. I know it inspired me to think I could be a musician too. In this episode I explore my admiration for Paul Simonon of The Clash and the effect the “Guns of Brixton” had on me and I share the story of how he influenced me to pick up the bass.  I'll also dig into the story of that famous smashed Fender bass guitar.  Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act. Fewer bands in rock history are as human, genuine, and flawed as the Clash, the 70s-80s punk rock band that outgrew its punk roots as it grew in mainstream fame. The band wanted to be one of the biggest in the world, but somehow do so without compromising its politically charged message. Is that possible? In a fascinating book called “We are the Clash,” co-author, music historian, and humanitarian Mark Andersen exquisitely details an unheralded time in the band's history: the making of the band's last album, “Cut the Crap.” “We are the Clash” is a spellbinding, ambitious book that revisits this oft-forgotten era of the band, when lyricist and singer Joe Strummer tried to will a band of almost all new recruits, save bassist Paul Simonon, into an all-out war on the music industry and the rise of Thatcherism. The band's efforts ultimately failed, but Mark's book will give you a fresh new look at this album, this moment in time, and where we are today. “We are the Clash” is available online (http://www.akashicbooks.com/catalog/we-are-the-clash/), but give your local bookstore the first shot.

The Opus has one more lesson about The Clash. The same curiosity that drove the English rockers to discover new genres of music also drove them to understand and empathize with the struggles going on far from their homes. That call for political action, of course, is all over London Calling -- right down to its title. Yet the reason why generation after generation continues to answer their call stems from the songwriting itself. These aren't just any ol' political anthems; they're catchy rock songs, the likes of which have crossed borders and cultures for decades. In the third and final episode of our London Calling series, host Andy Bothwell attempts to explain these cross-cultural transmissions. Once more, he's aided by a rotating panel of guests, specifically Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Killing Joke’s Jaz Coleman, AJJ’s Sean Bonette and Ben Gallaty, Worriers’ Lauren Denitzio, Let Fury Have the Hour author Antonio D'Ambrosio, journalist Robert Evans, and filmmaker Joseph Patel. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of London Calling, revisit a selection of The Clash’s best tracks via all major streaming services, and enter to win a Fender Player Precision Bass just like the one Paul Simonon played.

Consequence of Sound and Sony are proud to present the sixth season of The Opus. Past seasons have explored the legacy of iconic albums by Bob Dylan (Blood on the Tracks), The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Electric Ladyland), Jeff Buckley (Grace), Willie Nelson (Red Headed Stranger), and Ozzy Osbourne (Blizzard of Ozz). This time, we're answering the cry of the only band that matters, The Clash, and their landmark release London Calling. Host Andy Bothwell, a.k.a. Astronautalis, will begin picking up the pieces of the Paul Simonon's bass when episode one arrives December 5th. The band was in uncertain territory leading into London Calling. After parting ways with their former manager and being forced to relocate to a new rehearsal space, lead songwriters Mick Jones and Joe Strummer were hit with a year-long bout of writer's block. Even on their previous record, they'd begun veering away from the punk they'd helped popularize towards more rock 'n roll sounds. By embracing styles as varied as ska, rockabilly, and pop, they were able to not only shake off their doldrums, but shake up punk rock at large. "London Calling, is perhaps, the greatest record, from one my favorite bands of all time," says Bothwell. "To say that I am excited about covering this one, would be an ABSURD understatement! This record didn’t just change how punk sounded, it totally redefined who was punk, what punk looked like, and blew my little American mind the first time I heard it in my brother’s room back in the 80’s!" The Opus: London Calling premieres December 5th, and you can subscribe now.

John Wilson returns with another run of the series in which he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Modern day super-group, DAMON ALBARN, PAUL SIMONON, TONY ALLEN and SIMON TONG talk to John Wilson about their acclaimed debut album "The Good, The Bad & The Queen." Released in 2007, the album brought together Blur's front-man, the bassist from the Clash, the Afrobeat pioneer who was also Fela Kuti's drummer, and former guitarist from the Verve who co-created the Magnetic North. Described by Damon Albarn as "a song cycle that's also a mystery play about London", the record was voted the Best Album of 2007 by the Observer Music Magazine and it includes the singles Herculean, Kingdom of Doom and Green Fields. Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Tony Allen and Simon Tong respond to questions from the audience and perform live versions of their follow-up album, 2018's "Merrie Land".

The Clash was a paradox of revolutionary conviction, musical ambition, and commercial drive. We Are The Clash is a gripping tale of the band's struggle to reinvent itself as George Orwell's 1984 loomed. This bold campaign crashed headlong into a wall of internal contradictions, and rising right-wing power. While the world teetered on the edge of the nuclear abyss, British miners waged a life-or-death strike, and tens of thousands died from US guns in Central America, Clash cofounders Joe Strummer, Paul Simonon, and Bernard Rhodes waged a desperate last stand after ejecting guitarist Mick Jones and drummer Topper Headon. The band shattered just as its controversial final album, Cut the Crap, was emerging.Andersen and Heibutzki weave together extensive archival research and in-depth original interviews with virtually all of the key players involved to tell a moving story of idealism undone by human frailty amid a climatic turning point for our world.https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9781617752933Learn more about your ad choices.

Front Row: Archive 2013

With John Wilson. The Clash were the noisy sound of rebellion in the late 1970s, a band who refused to perform on Top of the Pops, sold their double album for the price of a single LP, and won an international audience and critical acclaim. Three decades after their acrimonious split, band members Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Nicky 'Topper' Headon re-unite to reflect on their career and their legacy, as they prepare to release a box set of all their music. And from the Front Row archives, we hear from the band's charismatic front-man Joe Strummer, recorded in 1999, three years before his death at the age of 50: 'musicians don't know what they're doing in a creative way, it's more like blundering around - and certainly we had no idea what sort of impact we were going to make with our blunderings'. Editor John Goudie.
