"Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. Our guest today is Angie Hart, Angie first came to international attention in the early '90s as the voice behind Frente!'s off-beat, tender alt-pop — including their beloved cover of Bizarre Love Triangle, which introduced a whole new audience to the song originally by New Order. Since then, she's built a rich and varied career spanning solo records, collaborations, theatre work, and deeply personal songwriting that's resonated with listeners for decades. In this conversation, Angie shares her recent autism/ADHD diagnosis and what it takes to reclaim your artistic voice over time. Angie also shares stories from the early Frente! years, reflects on navigating the music industry, and opens up about how identity an d self-understanding shapethe way she makes art. This week we leave the Middle Ages far behind and land squarely in the emotional whirlwind of Romanticism with Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. Written in 1774 when Goethe was just twenty-five, the novel became what might be the first true worldwide bestseller—so influential that young men across Europe dressed like Werther, and suicides even spiked in imitation of his tragic end.Werther himself is…a lot. His passion for Charlotte—who is engaged, then married, to another man—spirals into obsession. When he realizes life without her is unbearable, he stages an elaborate, melodramatic exit: visiting friends for final goodbyes, embracing Charlotte while they read Ossian together (a scene straight out of Inferno's Francesca and Paolo), and then borrowing her husband's pistols to kill himself. The ending is bleak, as it should be.Goethe's writing is wonderfully accessible, but Werther's self-indulgent emotionalism reveals the contradictions of early Romanticism: exalting nature and feeling while refusing the grounding work of actual life. Still, this novel opens a door into the powerful reaction against Enlightenment rationalism—a door we'll walk through next week with the Romantic poets. Things are about to accelerate.LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!)My Amazon Book List (NOT an affiliate link)CONNECTThe complete list of Crack the Book Episodes: https://cheryldrury.substack.com/p/crack-the-book-start-here?r=u3t2rTo read more of my writing, visit my Substack - https://www.cheryldrury.substack.com.Follow me on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cldrury/ LISTENSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/5GpySInw1e8IqNQvXow7Lv?si=9ebd5508daa245bdApple Podcasts - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crack-the-book/id1749793321 Captivate - https://crackthebook.captivate.fm

Jeff and Phil welcome their old friend Oliver Wang, professor of sociology, curator for the Japanese American National Museum exhibition Cruising J-Town: Behind the Wheel of the Nikkei Community, and author/editor of the exhibition's companion book. They talk about the rich history of Japanese American car culture in Los Angeles, its significance in shaping community identity, the impact of urban development, the surprising gamesmanship involved in street racing, and the complex tapestry of stories still waiting to be uncovered in Asian American history. Oliver also shares some of his research on an important question: why is "Bizarre Love Triangle" the unofficial anthem for Asian Americans (of a certain age)?

Led by vocalist Angie Hart and guitarist Simon Austin, Frente! emerged from Melbourne, Australia, with a sound that blended acoustic folk with a touch of alternative rock. On their 1992 debut Marvin the Album, Hart's angelic vocals combined with Austin's intricate guitar work create an intimate listening experience. It was completely out of step with the heavy Seattle sounds dominating radio playlists at the time, but the band made commercial inroads thanks to their non-album cover of New Order's classic synth-pop dance hit "Bizarre Love Triangle." For such a focused, stripped down record, some of the production choices left us scratching our heads, like an obnoxiously loud snare caked in heavy reverb, or a free jazz excursion completely out of step with the rest of the record. In the early 80s, a new band rose from the ashes of Joy Division. This Manchester quartet rebranded themselves as New Order, and they went on to have a string of pop and dance hits. “Substance,” released in 1987, stands as a remarkable compilation of the band's most influential and innovative work up to that point, combining elements of electronic music with rock to a unique and captivating sound that would define the era. The album is a treasure trove of hit singles, including iconic tracks like “Blue Monday,” “Bizarre Love Triangle,” and “True Faith,” all of which have left an indelible mark on the music landscape.

IG: @discos.completos

Jon Bassoff is the author of nine novels. His mountain gothic novel, Corrosion, has been translated into French and German and was nominated for the Grand Prix de Litterature Policiere, France's biggest crime fiction award. His psycho-noir novel, The Disassembled Man, has been adapted for the big screen with a filming date set to begin within the next hundred years. He also wrote the screenplay for Bizarre Love Triangle, which was named a semi-finalist at the New York Cinematography Awards and a finalist at the Seattle Film Festival for best short film. His work has been featured several times in New York Magazine and has garnered the attention of fellow authors such as Craig Johnson, author of the Longmire series, SA Cosby, author of Razorblade Tears, and Paul Trembley, author of A headful of ghosts, and many others. For his day job, Jon teaches high school English where he is known by students and faculty alike as the deranged writer guy. I've heard the strange legacy of Ian Curtis, who committed suicide in May 1980, mentioned on a number of episodes of The Ongoing History of New Music with Alan Cross and been intrigued. When I started out as a DJ at Lloyd's Recreation in Calgary as a teenager, Blue Monday and Bizarre Love Triangle by New Order were huge and some of the original 12-inch singles I learned how to beat-mix on. I had no idea that Joy Division was the precursor to New Order back then and it's time to see where their roots came from. Listen to why I picked this album and join us at the end of the month for our full review. Join us at https://TheSonicCollective.com for review notes and much more.
In the early '90s, indie pop band Frente! enjoyed a meteoric rise in Australia, going from the Triple J Hottest 100 to regulars in the top 5 of the ARIA chart in just a couple of releases. In this episode, we hear from singer Angie Hart about the band's early success and the backlash they suffered following the release of "Accidently Kelly Street", which was brutally parodied by The Late Show. This episode also covers a different — but linked — music industry story. In 1995, Angie provided vocals for a track called "Tingly" by Pop! But despite rave reviews and support from a variety of FM radio networks, it wasn't the hit it should have been. Now, as Angie has reunited with Pop! for new single "Waiting", she and Amy Flower explain what happened with "Tingly". We'll also hear about Frente's acoustic cover of New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" and less commercially successful second album, Shape, and eventual split.
We used to think that the day would never come, but Discord & Rhyme has reached a new milestone: it's our first singles compilation! New Order issued Substance in an effort to bail out Factory Records, whose financial mismanagement is the stuff of legend. But that also meant that the label was willing to spend money on cool new equipment for the band, which meant that they were always one step ahead of the game technologically, leading an unintentional revolution in electronic dance music. Substance spans the years 1981–1987, during which the band rose from the ashes of Joy Division, issued the groundbreaking 12-inch single “Blue Monday,” and ascended to arena stardom with appearances on major soundtracks such as Pretty in Pink and hits such as “Bizarre Love Triangle” and “True Faith.” They're one of Rich's very favorite bands, so join us as he leads Mike and John on the journey from Manchester to Madchester.Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Mike DeFabio, John McFerrinComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/088-new-order-substance-1987Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod
