Food and Travel Nation with Elizabeth Dougherty GUEST: JANE AKRE - LOCAL FOX REPORTER FIRED FOR STORY ABOUT MONSANTO The TRUTH about Food and Travel Original Broadcast Date: 04/2013 FROM THE FOOD AND TRAVEL NATION ARCHIVES In April of 2013 Elizabeth Dougherty from Food and Travel Nation spoke with Jane Akre, a former reporter for Fox 13, WTVT-TV in Tampa Bay. Along with her now former husband Steve Wilson, their landmark story of journalists being FIRED for telling the truth was included in the documentary, The Corporation Ms. Akre spoke with us about their never-aired story on bovine growth hormone (rBGH). As WTVT-TV is owned BY the Fox Television Corporation, the decision NOT to air their story and then to fire them came from the biggest names in the news industry. Their firings led to a wrongful termination lawsuit against Fox. Jane Akre's bio from her website: Understanding the way the FDA approved rBGH is very similar to the way some medical devices slip through critical scrutiny by a federal regulatory system that sometimes feels more like the tail wagging the dog. Our story was told in the film, The Corporation, see a clip (here). My bio appears on Journalism Juice website (here). ### Each week our listeners get the very latest food and travel information We produce homemade videos of healthy, easy to make recipes We feature no-holds barred interviews in a LIVE, fast-paced, nationwide call-in show. Elizabeth Dougherty is a writer, trained chef, world traveler and now an award-winning talk show host. Food And Travel Nation was on the forefront of presenting expert guests with vital information about GMOs, at a time when no one was talking about or even knew about the subject. We give our listeners, advertisers and stations a LIVE SHOW. (NO “BEST OF'S” EVER!) We present hard-hitting topics and interviews without the same old political spin.

Chris Cerrone, a Partner at Akre Capital Management, stops by The Business Brew for a discussion about his investment philosophy, simplicity, the definition of quality, and much more. Chris' paper, The Art of (Not) Selling, really made an impression on Bill. This discussion follows up on that paper, among other topics. Prior to joining Akre Capital Management in 2012, Chris served as an equity research analyst for Goldman Sachs & Co. in New York from 2010 to 2012. In that position, he covered restaurant and retail companies. He began his investment management career in 2007 as a junior equity research analyst with Century Capital Management in Boston. Chris graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in economics from Tufts University. Bill really enjoyed listening to Chris talk about how Mr. Akre would push Chris to find the essence of a business. That enables an analyst to then focus on THE most important question. Would you recognize a serial killer if you rubbed elbows with him in a bar or if he struck up a conversation with you on a hiking trail? Maybe something about the person would set off alarm bells, especially if you found yourself alone with him. A sociopath or a psychopath can often present a charming demeanor, though, so most of us would never notice the predator in our midst. We might not realize the friendly stranger is a brutal murderer until we read the news the next day. I learned about the killing spree of John Fautenberry in a Facebook message from a reader named Brian Akre. Brian was an Associated Press correspondent in Juneau, Alaska, in 1991, when he encountered Fautenberry at a bar on the night Fautenberry murdered his last victim. Brian said he talked to Fautenberry at the bar and saw him with the man he would murder a few hours later. Brian said, "It was a weird experience. When I saw the news story in the Juneau Empire and realized it was the same guy I had seen at the bar, it sent a shiver down my spine. He just seemed like any other loud, intoxicated guy at a bar on any Saturday night." Akre said the incident at the Juneau bar was the closest he ever wanted to come to meeting a serial killer. The German Chancellor is widely respected as good at crisis management, but public confidence in her government's pandemic policies is ebbing away. How will her party, the CDU, campaign during this autumn's general election - is it possible the next Chancellor could be a Green? Jenny Hill reports from Berlin on power struggles and shifting opinions. While the Christian Democrats confront their future, the German state is still carrying on talks with the government of Namibia about its colonial past. Land rights, official apologies and reparations have all been discussed . So has the treatment of the Herero and Nama peoples in the early 1900s, which some historians now consider "the first genocide of the 20th century". Tim Whewell met black and white Namibians still viewing their heritage though very different lenses. In Armenia the public mood is mutinous, in the aftermath of the most recent round of conflict over Nagorno Karabakh. A ceasefire agreement is holding, but there's grief and anger on the streets of Yerevan. Mark Stratton has friends in the disputed territory and hoped to revisit them, to see how they had survived the fighting. Millions of people in Iranian and Kurdish communities around the world recently celebrated Nowruz - the Persian New Year, a joyful festival full of the symbolism of rebirth. But it's enjoyed particularly passionately in the ancient town of Akre in the Zagros mountains in northern Iraq. Leila Molana Allen climbed its stone ramparts and steep hillsides to witness the spectacle. In eastern Romania, there's a village like no other: Tichilesti, home to Europe's last leprosarium - a facility where people with Hansen’s disease, better known as leprosy, were once sent for life. Nick Thorpe shares some of the stories he heard there.

We all need a little help sometimes, especially when it comes to journeys of personal development. Whether your goal is to be happier or to find fulfillment or purpose, it can be pretty tough to figure out how to accomplish your goals on your own. In those circumstances, many people turn to a life coach. Like a therapist, a life coach is someone who can help you identify strengths and weaknesses and overcome obstacles holding you back. Our guest this week has often been referred to as “The Queen of Seattle Music.” For years Carrie Akre fronted the bands, Hammerbox, Goodness, and The Rockfords...all of which had huge followings, especially in the Pacific Northwest. Now her career has shifted from entertaining and inspiring fans through music, to inspiring and motivating people through life-coaching. We talk with her about how her musical journey was just the start of a path to helping others. As she writes on her website, “Everyone goes through moments when it important to find their truth, facing fears and make a plan to do/be who you want. Change is absolutely possible and you don't have to figure it all out alone. You deserve and sometimes need support as you discover and plan out your next steps toward what you desire!” In this episode learn more about how vulnerability and authenticity helped launch her to the front of the stage in front of adoring fans, and how her experience can help you live a more fulfilling and authentic life yourself. Join her Facebook Group to learn more about upcoming workshops: Dec 7, 8, 9 “Cocooning for Change: Three steps to start making a change in your life.” Thank you for listening! Carrie fronted Seattle grunge favorite Hammerbox in the early '90s, then moved to the more poppy guitar rock band Goodness for the latter part of the decade, and released three solo albums in the '00s. The overall movement is from harsh exuberance to quiet reflectivity, and Carrie's role evolved with her starting off as new newbie to rock bands singing over already-composed music and ending up in a much more controlling position, as she experiments with different musicians to get deep textures. We discuss "No" from Hammerbox's Numb (1993), "Cozy" from Goodness's Anthem (1998), and "Reflection" from her solo album Home (2000). We also listen to "Coat of Arms" from the Rockfords' self-titled 2000 album (a band that features members of Goodness as well as Mike McCready from Pearl Jam), and the opening music is Hammerbox's single "When 3 is 2," also from No. Hear some more conversation about Carrie's most recent musical efforts and other topics with bonus songs by signing up for a recurring donation, then clicking here.
