This episode of Electronically Yours features DJ, producer, collaborator and songwriter, Sean Dickson AKA Hifi Sean. He was originally a member of the Soup Dragons, then began playing house, disco and electro in the burgeoning and innovative club scene at The Glasgow Art School, before relocating to London in 2006 where he became a staple figure at some of the capital's biggest underground house, disco and techno clubs, as well as ‘after-hours' parties. His current albums cowritten with David McAlmont are excellent, as is his album of collaborations called ‘ft' featuring Bootsy Collins, Yoko Ono, Dave Ball, Fred Schneider and Crystal Waters. In 1990 Junior Reid & the Soup Dragons had a song titled: "I'm Free". Some of the lyrics included, "I'm free to do what I want any old time". Sure, we're free to do what we want, just not any old time. This is because temporary freedom is blind to eternal enslavement. We know from John 8:31-36 that Jesus is our only source for "True Freedom," which is not temporary, but eternal! So, yes, you are free to do what you want, but just know that the time it takes to live out your fantasy of freedom is limited.
This week, Steve picked an hour of songs with titles that end with word "thing". Why? Who knows? These artist are in this show: DM3, The Mowgli's, Tears For Fears, Brian Setzer, Arctic Monkeys, Gin Blossoms, Agent Orange, The Silos, Supergrass, U2, The Rifles, The Soup Dragons, Yaz, 999, Grant-Lee Philips and Luscious Jackson. The '60s were marked by dizzying revolutionary change, musical evolution, and technological innovation. It was the decade where pop music as a whole went from ephemeral entertainment to serious art. It was the catalyst for social and cultural shifts. Most of the music that we talk about on this very show, from punk rock to power pop to synth pop, has very strong roots in the music of the '60s. Yet very few '60s pioneers were able to successfully cross over into the O3L era. Many sounded hopelessly out of touch as they tried to chase the trends of the day - glossy synths, gated snares, etc. Artists who were once the harbingers of cool traded in their mop tops and Spanish boots for big hair and Member's Only jackets. Who successfully crossed over to the classic alternative era? Joining us to discuss the topic is author Dave Philpott. For close to a decade and a half the Philpotts (Dave and his father Derek) have been getting under the skin of musical artistes. Picking up on glaring errors in their lyrics or sometimes getting completely the wrong end of the stick (perhaps to irritate things a little further) they totally misunderstand the meaning of ‘poetic license'. Hundreds of missives have landed on the real and virtual doormats of musicians, worldwide. In return, these lyrical legends have exercised their right to reply, correcting and sometimes confirming the authors' summation of what went wrong... or right. In their new book Dear Catherine Wheel: Bonkers Letters to U.K. Indie Bands with Genuine Replies, letters were addressed to some of the finest indie/C86 bands, including The Soup Dragons, The Jasmine Minks, The Bevis Front, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, The June Brides, Talulah Gosh, and 80+ more. It's a brilliant, absurd, and hilarious book that you never knew you needed! It's now available at Amazon worldwide. The Philpotts have also authored the companion volumes Dear Mr. Kershaw, Dear Mr. Pop Star, and Grammar Free in the U.K. A portion of all sales aid the Musicians Against Homelessness organization. Ahí estaban Primal Scream, The Wedding Present, The Soup Dragons, Shop Assistants, The Pastels, y muchas otras. It hasn't been easy for Sean Dickson. In fact, he doesn't even look like the Soup Dragons frontman you remember from early 90s hits like "I'm Free" and "Divine Thing". There's a good reason for that - almost nothing is the same. Since the Soup Dragons closed up shop in the late 90s, Sean came out, left music for many years, spent some time battling mental health, marrying his husband and finally becoming an in demand DJ named HiFi Sean and releasing a hit new album with vocalist David McAlmont recently called Happy Endings. Sean opens up more than he ever has before, especially when it comes to the endurance of "I'm Free" which he doesn't benefit from. It's a lot and, ultimately, a story of redemption. By the end, we're both in tears. Enjoy! www.facebook.com/hifisean www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Whether with his first band Thieves – hugely underrated, I listen to those songs all the time – his Britpop era partnership with Suede exile Bernard Butler – the union of which produced arguably the finest pop song of the mid-1990s - his work with the great Dave Arnold or the English composer Michael Nyman, the voice of David McAlmont has been a fixture of my listening habits for almost three decades. Turns out that's not stopping anytime soon. These days David has paired up with one Sean Dickinson – aka HiFi Sean, aka Sean from baggy boys the Soup Dragons – for a new venture, the spoils of which can be heard on February 3rd, 2023, via Plastique Recordings. The record is called Happy Ending, and it's an eclectic collection of songs that are unmistakably of the modern age – angsty, twitchy, sad, sombre, maybe even a bit paranoid, confused, hopefully, looking for meaning and love. It's not even 2023 yet and I might have found my favourite record of next year already. And so on this episode I speak to David about that record, but also his work with all of the aforementioned, and get into the machinations of one of my lifetime's most unique talents. It's a good episode this and I'm so grateful to David for taking the time to speak to me. And while I have you, I wanted to let you know that the new episode of the ever excellent Trve. Cvlt. Pop! Ross A. Sinclair - The Soup Dragons - in conversation with David Eastaugh https://preciousrecordingsoflondon.bandcamp.com The Soup Dragons formed in Bellshill, a town near Motherwell, in 1985. The line up was Sean Dickson (vocals, lead guitar), Jim McCulloch (guitar, second voice) who replaced Ian Whitehall, and Sushil K. Dade (bass). The original drummer, Ross A. Sinclair, left the group after the first proper album, This Is Our Art, to pursue a career in art, and was replaced by Paul Quinn. Most of their songs were written by Sean Dickson.
HiFi Sean (Sean Dickson) was the singer and main writer of The Soup Dragons, who charted in Europe in 1990 with 'I'm Free', an indie dance cover of the Rolling Stones hit. Later, in 1992, their track 'Divine Thing' was a top 40 hit on the Billboard chart in America. After their first album, 'This is Our Art', the band developed their sound in a more dance and less indie direction. Ten years after the band was founded in 1985, it disbanded. Sean Dickson came out as gay, an event that led to a breakdown, he formed The High Fidelity and. after DJ-ing already earlier in his life, became successful under the name HiFi Sean.Today, he continues to DJ, and make music. HiFi Sean's album Ft. includes tracks by Crystal Waters, Yoko Ono, Dave Ball, Billie Ray Martin (check out her podcast), and David McAlmont, with whom he has already recorded an album that will be released next year. His story is fascinating, and he's able to relate the events in his life with a healthy distance, as someone who is now a happily married gay man.If you like Hifi Sean why not check out these interviews:Billie Ray Martin, the Electronic Series which includes Wolfgang Flür & Martyn Ware, Man Parrish, Dave Dorrell.Connect with me on Instagram; steve.blameFor more on HiFi Sean check out his SoundCloud; https://soundcloud.com/hifi-sean And thanks to POP; The History Makers insanely wonderful talent booker: #ArchieCMichaelSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/pop-the-history-makers-with-steve-blame/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Hosted on Acast. It isn't easy and many of us struggle, even unconsciously, with moving through the grief as we adjust to all the changes that come with opening up. The messages that we receive all of our lives about what love is and isn't create conflict in our minds as we grapple with pushing back against our identities, societal norms and expectations others have of us. This week, we're discussing Season 2, Episode 17: Let the Dating Games Begin! If you loved the previous episodes that ping-ponged between roommates, you've hit the jackpot with this one because it is allllllll over the place. (On the plus side, we do get to see everyone represented.) We see a slice of the roomies' love lives this episode: Beth S. has two guys visit her, Tami got a boyfriend named Tootie at some point, Aaron contradicts himself on what he wants, Jon does his best to resist temptation, Dom has a seemingly-endless cavalcade of women, Beth A. is single again, and Glen makes a potential connection at the house BBQ party. Was Beth S. actually joking when she told Tami someone hooked up in the closet? How many girls can Dom juggle at a party without getting busted? Is anyone in the house ready to settle down? Will another song by the Soup Dragons be featured? Listen and find out! Follow us on social media! We're @friendsamongstrangerspod on both Facebook and Instagram, and @FAS_pod on Twitter.
World of Twist, The Farm, Northside, The Soup Dragons, Blur.
