This week's Talkhouse Podcast brings together two important figures from the ‘90s shoegaze movement—and beyond—Miki Berenyi and Debbie Googe. Berenyi was one of the two women at the front of Lush, the powerhouse band that burned very bright from the late ‘80s to a difficult end in 1996. Their fascinating story—and much more—is told in Berenyi's recent autobiography, the excellent Fingers Crossed: How Music Saved Me From Success. The book details everything from Berenyi's childhood through a no-holds-barred look at her band's successes and failures, from management woes to in-fighting to a stage dive on Lollapalooza that left her in literal stitches. The other half of this conversation is Debbie Googe, best known as the bassist for My Bloody Valentine, perhaps the most legendary of the shoegaze bands. Googe was there almost from the volatile band's start, both in their early, more rocking days—which you'll hear a bit about in this chat—to its ongoing reunion. In the long stretches between My Bloody Valentine tours, Googe has played in other interesting bands, including Thurston Moore's solo lineups and with Brix Smith of the Fall. Googe also recently started performing and recording more experimental music as da Googie, including a recent collaborative single with Too Many Things. As you'll hear, Berenyi and Googe know each other from way back—from the days when their bands were small enough to be playing shows in squats, in fact. In this chat, they talk about what touring is like in Europe versus their UK home—better food in Europe—as well as Berenyi's bandmate and partner Moose losing his passport recently. Googe tells the hilarious story of her My Bloody Valentine bandmate Bilinda Butcher auditioning for the band, which involves accidentally being interviewed for another, entirely different, job. It's selling to people, or gaining trust with people that you haven't necessarily met yet they still trust you and want to buy from you because they've seen you on the internet somewhere and thought you're good, you can do what I need, I want to get in touch with you. With the advent of AI and the dreaded ChatGTP you're going to get a lot of soulless crap out there using all the buzzwords, hooks and structures that you get for content on LinkedIn. Things like: “I've been thinking lately…” then something outlandish, or “something you don't know about me…” It's all structured, it's all templated. The way to do it properly is to get yourself out there, your own personality and character, AI cannot imitate people even though it tries, it cannot be you. It's about attracting your band, your batch, your people, your clan. The sort of people that are going to be with you, the best people to work with , the people you're going to love working with and are going to love working with you. Don't try to appeal to everybody because it's not going to work, you're just going to end up with people that, quite frankly, are idiots that you're not going to want to deal with  and are going to be more hassle than it's worth. So, put your own personality and opinions no matter how objectionable and ridiculous they may be to some, to others they're going to hit the nail right on the head and they're the people you're going to want to work with anyway. If your business is B2B LinkedIn is your best starting point and you should be using it not as an online CV, which most people use it for, they see it as an online recruitment platform. Don't list all the jobs you've done and the education you've had because, while that's important, it's not what's going to set you aside from your competitors in the business world. Use it to talk about the wins and successes you've had, the skills you've got, what you've done in business, and always focus on your client – talk about who you've helped and how, don't talk about yourself. If you're B2C a Googe profile is the quickest, easiest and fastest thing to do, and I'm stunned at the number of businesses that don't have one or have one unclaimed or poorly put together. BEST MOMENTS“Some people say you shouldn't have too much personality in your [LinkedIn] posts because “it's not Facebook” and that it should be all business and corporate-y, but they can quite frankly do one. If people don't like you on LinkedIn that's cool, that just means you've pre-qualified them as not your ideal client.”“If you're not annoying people you're not doing enough.”“Twitter or X recently updated the app so that when you log in you no longer see people you follow but people that will be most interesting to you, and they deliberately put in people you disagree with.”“Nobody wins with happiness on social media, it's all about the angst and the disagreement. Google's Introduces Policy Circumvention - Google has added a new spam policy to its search spam policies - “Policy circumvention.” In short, if you take any action you take to bypass the other Google Search spam or content policies such as creating new sites, using other sites or other methods to distribute that content, maybe on third-party sites or other avenues then Google will restrict or remove the content from showing up in search. Here is what Google wrote:“If you engage in actions intended to bypass our spam or content policies for Google Search, undermine restrictions placed on content, a site, or an account, or otherwise continue to distribute content that has been removed or made ineligible from surfacing, we may take appropriate action which could include restricting or removing eligibility for some of our search features (for example, Top Stories, Discover). Circumvention includes but is not limited to creating or using multiple sites or other methods intended to distribute content or engage in a behavior that was previously prohibited”2. Google's Advice On When You Should Move Your Blogs To A Sub-Domain - John Mueller of Google recently shared his advice on when you should add blogs to a Sub-Domain. John shared that he will move blogs to a subdomain over a www when he thinks the content on the subdomain can live on its own. He said "my way of thinking with regards to subdomains is that it depends on what you're trying to do. Is it content that's meant to be tightly connected to the main site? Then put it on the main site. If you want the content to stand on its own, then a subdomain is a good match."He also shared that there are technical considerations to think about outside of SEO. He said "There's also the technical side-effect of subdomains sometimes making things a bit more complicated: verification in search console, tracking in analytics, DNS, hosting, security, CSPs, etc."Lastly, John added "To be clear, I think it will affect rankings of the new content, but ultimately it depends on what you want to achieve with it. Sometimes you want something separated out, sometimes you want to see something as a part of the main site. These are different situations, and the results will differ."3. Google: 60% Of The Internet Is Duplicate & Prefers https - Gary Illyes from Google shared during Google Search Central Live in Singapore that 60% of the content on internet is duplicate. To find duplicates, Google compares the checksum generated from the main content and if the checksum matches then the content is duplicate. Lastly, Gary mentioned that Google will always pick a https url over http. Ensure that you have https on your website and focus on producing something way more unique and useful than most of what is out on the internet.  4. Google Re-confirms That E-A-T Applies To Every Single Search Query - During recent SMX Next event, Hyung-Jin Kim, the Vice President of Google Search (who has been working on search quality for the past 20 years and leads up core ranking at Google Search) reconfirmed that E-A-T is used in every single query, it is applied to everything Google Search does. "E-A-T is a core part of our metrics," he added, explaining that it is to "ensure the content that people consume is going to be, is not going to be harmful and it is going to be useful to the user." Here is the transcript of what he said exactly:“E-A-T is a core part of our metrics and it stands for expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. This has not always been there in Google, and it is something we have developed about 10 to 12 to 13 years ago. And it is really there to make sure that, along the lines of what we talked about earlier, that is it really there to ensure the content that people consume is going to be, is not going to be harmful and it is going to be useful to the user. These are principles we live by every single day. And E-A-T, that template, of how we rate an individual site based on expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, we do it to every single query and every single result. So it is actually pretty pervasive throughout everything we do. I will say that YMYL queries, the your money or your life queries, such as when I am looking for a mortgage or when I am looking for the local ER, those we have a particular eye on and pay a bit more attention to those queries because those are some of the most important decisions people can make, some of the most important decisions people will make in their lives. So I will say that E-A-T is has a bit more of an impact there but again, I will say that E-A-T applies to everything, every single query that we have.”5. Google Publishes A Guide To Current & Retired Ranking Systems - You can find out which algorithms Google uses to rank search results and which ones are no longer in use with the help of a new guide to Google's ranking systems. Furthermore, Google distinguishes between ranking "systems" and ranking "updates" in its most recent guide, using new terminology. RankBrain is one example of a system that is always operating in the background. On the other hand, an update describes a one-time adjustment to ranking structures.For instance, when Google returns search results, the helpful content system is always active in the background, while it is subject to modifications to enhance its performance. Other examples of one-time adjustments to ranking algorithms include spam updates and updates to the core algorithm.Here is the list, in alphabetical order, of Google's ranking systems that are currently operational. BERT: Short for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers, BERT allows Googe to understand how combinations of words can express different meanings and intent. Crisis information systems: Google has systems in place to provide specific sets of information during times of crisis, such as SOS alerts when searching for natural disasters. Deduplication systems: Google's search systems aim to avoid serving duplicate or near-duplicate webpages. Exact match domain system: A system that ensures Google doesn't give too much credit to websites with domain names that exactly match a query. Freshness systems: A system designed to show fresher content for queries where it would be expected Helpful content system:  A system designed to better ensure people see original, helpful content, rather than content made primarily to gain search engine traffic. Link analysis systems and PageRank: Systems that determine what pages are about and which might be most helpful in response to a query based on how pages link to each other. Local news systems: A system that surfaces local news sources when relevant to the query. MUM: Short for Multitask Unified Model, MUM, is an AI system capable of understanding and generating language. It improves featured snippet callouts and is not used for general ranking. Neural matching:  A system that helps Google understand representations of concepts in queries and pages and match them to one another. Original content systems: A system to help ensure Google shows original content prominently in search results, including original reporting, ahead of those who merely cite it. Removal-based demotion systems: Systems that demote websites subject to a high volume of content removal requests. Page experience system: A system that assesses various criteria to determine if a webpage provides a good user experience. Passage ranking system: An  AI system Google uses to identify individual sections or “passages” of a web page to understand better how relevant a page is to a search. Product reviews system:  A system that rewards high-quality product reviews written by expert authors with insightful analysis and original research. RankBrain:  An AI system that helps Google understand how words are related to concepts. Allows Google to return results that don't contain exact words used in a query. Reliable information systems: Google has multiple systems to show reliable information, such as elevating authoritative pages, demoting low-quality content, and rewarding quality journalism. Site diversity system: A system that prevents Google from showing more than two webpage listings from the same site in the top results. Spam detection systems: A system that deals with content and behaviors that violate Google's spam policies.

What is Mono. What is kbps mean? What bitrate should I use? Here are some things to know To figure out how much space you need, you need to know: 1. How often you will publish 2. How long your shows will be 3. What format The formats have some general numbers you can use. For example: If you publish at 128 kbps stereo, your file will take up (roughly) 1M minute If you publish at 64 kbps mono, your file will take up (roughly) .5 M a minute (and sound the "same" but won't have stereo separation). So if you do a weekly show that is 30 minutes long that is 30 minutes multiplied by four weeks. So monthly you create 120 minutes of content. At 128 kbps Stereo, you would need 120 Megabytes per month. If you went 64 kbps mono you would need 64 megabytes per month (roughly on all of these estimates). In today's show, we listen to files encoded both ways as well as mp3 files encoded using the LAME encoder and the Fraunhofer and see if there truly is a difference? Need a Media Host? I rarely have a serious skype issue. It' is typically myself and one other person, but I have been on chats with five people and no issues. What About Squadcast.fm, Zencastr.com, and all the other options? While it's true these devices record local, so if there is a weird audio glitch, in theory, they don't record the glitch. Something Zencastr states you need at least 1.5 Down, but recommend 5 mbps see more For the record, I've use Zencasr and Squadcast and never had an issue with either. I've also used Ringr which is a cool app for your phone Free Tips For Making Your Guests Sound Good On Skype This comes from Kim from www.toastmasters101.net who explains if someone is going to use their built-in microphone on a laptop, she will have them download skype to their phone and use it over wi-fi. I like this idea, and here is a twist to make it easier. All it takes to create a free Skype account is an email address. You can create a free Gmail account, sign up at skype.com and make a second account. You provide the login and password to your guest, now they don't have to create a skype account. You don't have to ask for their skype ID (as it's yours). Afte the conversation have your guest I Need to Move if I Want Free TV I tried using a digital over the air antenna to receive free channels. I've tried three different versions of these. Most of them you sparking pictures of TV stations that are involved with shopping and/or Jesus. Couldn't I get NBC? Why because I live in Akron (about 50-60 miles from the nearest NBC signal). So any solution that starts with, "get an HDTV Antanea isn't going to work because of where I live. So Skype may not work for you because you Internet blows. Swapping to a new system (much like switch antennas for me) didn't help. Michael Delaney from Baby Mountain Radio (Care Giving for Dementia)  let me know about Silicon Dust about the HD Home Run ($66) but it requires an  HDTV Antanea and then allows you to stream that signal to any device. It's cool, and inexpensive (you can have a DVR for something like $35/year) at least from what I've seen I still need an HDTV Antanea. Stargate Pioneer told me about Tablo DUAL OTA DVR for Cord Cutters - 64 GB with WiFi - For use with HDTV Antennas that again requires an HDTV Antanea (they do make Outdoor HDTV Antenna), but living in an apartment, I didn't want to go there) How I Saved MySelf $44 and Got Faster Internet Want to see a popular topic? Start talking about cutting off your cable television, or "cord cutting." Oofah! I just mentioned it on a live podcast that hasn't been released and I got two replies (with really good information. I was spending at one point over $200 on cable but got it down to around $176, but I don't watch a ton of TV. So I contacted my Cable Company (Formerly Time Warner Cable - Now Spectrum) and found out that while I was on TWC fastest internet there was faster Cable available. So I downgraded my cable to $109 which now includes a much faster Internet. But I lose the ability to record anything (and you know us podcasters we love to time shift). After some comparisons of YouTube Live, Sling, and Hulu, I went with Hulu with the Live TV streaming for $44. So my now faster cable and channels is $153. This week I'm going to shut off my basic channels (and cut the cable tv completely) which should make my total expense $133. So I went from $176 to $133. I come down and ask Alexa to play Hulu which fires up my TV and tunes it to Hulu. This is going to be a fun space to watch as different companies (Googe is now rolling out YouTube Live).

Create a spreadsheet with the social media platform, the URL, and name on profile and the description Also include number of fans/followers, and the date of the last activity Make sure everything is consistent (name, images, colors, etc) Start auditing individual social platforms for traffic Where is Your Traffic Coming From? Now that you’ve audited the general items of the individual to make sure everything looks and feels the same, it’s time to start looking at Google Analytics for indicators that visitors to the website are coming from the various social platforms.  You can also get some valuable information from the social media platform data. Facebook Insights Twitter Analytics LinkedIn Company Page Analytics In addition to using the social media analytics to perform a social media audit, you can also use third party tools like Hootsuite and SEMRush to analyze data from social media websites. Act on the Social Media Audit There are some actionable items that may show up in your social media audit that can Repurpose old content in another form like video, slideshows or podcats Set up goals and metrics to measure The point of doing social media is to create awareness, gain followers to frequency, and that activity drives traffic to the site to sign up for email newsletters and subscriptions, then convert those subscribers. Determine what “success looks like” for your business and see what sites are meeting that success model. Sometimes it’s better to abandon/close a social media platform if you are unable to manage that platform or your audience just isn’t there. Set up a schedule to perform this social media audit quarterly or at least regularly to look for trends on what is working. Other Tips Video is going to be the dominant form of media in social media in the coming years. Video doesn’t have to be polished to be effective. Just needs good camera placement, decent content and great sound. Create a list of FAQ’s, answer them, and make 1-2 minute videos answering those questions and share in your social sites. Do you want to be seen as a thought leader? Then consumption of social and website content is the goa. If you want to create awareness, strive for reach… how many people can you reach with each post.. Shares, likes and retweets are to be used if the goal is to reach more with word of mouth. There is a documented trail of each post to see how many people see it, share it, like it, click on it, and even purchase because of it. Don’t expect immediate results! Sometimes you are talking to no one until your acquire a following. But there is a benefit to talking to no one in social and blogs because the post lives on and can be found by people searching for the content keywords. Googe+ is great for SEO benefits, even if your customers aren’t there. Performing a social media audit can take a bit of time, but if you do it once you will produce a baseline that will enable your business to compare to when making future decisions on digital marketing.
