Dr. Elizabeth Morris, M.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology at the University of California Davis. She is a clinician and specializes in high-risk breast cancer screening. A pioneer in the field of breast imaging, she is at the cutting edge of research using advanced screening techniques like MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) in conjunction with artificial intelligence to identify people at higher risk for breast cancer earlier, so they can receive more screening and catch breast cancer earlier. Her Komen work combines screening images, patient health information, genomics, and uses artificial intelligence to predict individuals at higher risk for breast cancer, in hopes of making a better model to identify those who would benefit from earlier or more frequent breast cancer screening. Dr. Morris is here today to talk to us about her passion for early detection and to help us understand when we should be getting screened for breast cancer.

Breakthrough theory becomes effective practice when it is successful applied by real-life entrepreneurs. The E4B entrepreneurial method is actualized by Hermann and Elizabeth Morris in the very distinctive business model for their brand, The Nail Hub. Knowledge Capsule The true purpose of a B2B business is to help your customers succeed. While outside observers focus on transactions — how much does this business sell, what are its revenues? — entrepreneurial business owners and operators focus on customers and customer relationships. Revenues follow from relationships. This insight is critical, since it guides business model development. Business-to-business models are especially responsive to relationship strategies. When a customer feels that the relationship with a supplier makes their business performance better, they can become a customer for life. That's a recipe for strong and sustainable growth. First, observe the ecosystem in which you operate, and identify gap opportunities. Systems thinking is an important component of the entrepreneurial method. A firm is a component or a node in a network of interconnected services we can call an ecosystem. Hermann's and Elizabeth's ecosystem is the Nail Fashion industry. Nodes include salons and salon owners, the nail technicians (sometimes employees, sometimes independent contractors) who provide service to consumers in the salons, equipment manufacturers and suppliers, product manufacturers and suppliers (for nail gel, etc.), and product distributors. Many salon owners were enthusiastic about their industry but not well-trained or experienced in the basic economics of business. Many of the technicians were passionate about their trade, but not highly trained in the latest techniques and technologies and in product selection. There were aspects of marketing that were underdeveloped, such as audience segmentation. And there were inconsistencies between products in both quality and safety. In the mind of the entrepreneur, these gaps are opportunities. The entrepreneurial question is: how best to fit in and contribute to the ecosystem. The business model response is determined by individual entrepreneurial orientation. The beginning orientation was that of an operator. Given their knowledge of both the high potential of the industry and the gaps to be addressed / problems to solve, the Morrises' entry point was as an operator. They embarked upon the journey to design a differentiated salon experience with superior nail technique, better products, better trained technicians. They ran the salon with better business acumen (they both came from high-level corporate positions and were able to bring sophisticated operating and financial experience). They segmented with an unusual and especially comfortable in-salon appeal, and via location. They were successful. There was a lot of learning, which Hermann identifies as overcoming pain points. The next growth step comes from re-orientation to larger scale. How could the Morrises scale their salon business? They thought through multiple openings (e.g., open and operate 20 salons), acquisition (acquire 20 salons), and franchising (sell franchises to multiple independent owners). All of these alternatives would require new capability development: establishing standards and a repeatable business model, including a reliable financial model, designing a multi-unit system of supply chains, capital deployment, décor, training and location scouting, and a new kind of marketing to salon managers or franchisees. The Morrises were reorienting to thinking as proprietors of a new kind of multi-division business. It's a different orientation, seeing the same ecosystem from a different perspective. Meanwhile, Elizabeth had the idea for a podcast to share her expertise and knowledge and passion for the industry. It was free business advice, free guidance, free technical training, teaching different aspects of running a salon and technical aspects for nail technicians. Its purpose was a service to consumers (better salon experiences), to technicians (better craftsmanship) and owners (better business operations). The podcast was called The Nail Hub. It generated a great positive reputation in the ecosystem and a lot of positive feedback. The knowledge that The Nail Hub podcast shared was enthusiastically welcomed. The Nail Hub podcast feedback resulted in a further re-orientation. The Nail Hub podcast was helping salon owners and those technicians who were independent contractors renting positions in salons to improve the way they ran their businesses: better management, better understanding of customer needs and segmentation, better approaches to pricing, revenue and profits, better techniques, and better products. What if a podcast can become a business model? Hermann and Elizabeth developed an entirely new B2B services business model which could be summarized as “educate the industry on how to operate a business, and supply them with the highest quality products to fit their business”. Importantly, the education is free to consume. The Nail Hub YouTube channel is free to access, and offers over 140 videos on every aspect of business operations, finances, equipment, products, and techniques. The videos are expensive to produce. The model is that the investment in education will be repaid through loyal customers buying the products that The Nail Hub offers for purchase. The curation of products itself is a service. The Nail Hub has identified a distinctive set of criteria for product selection (health, safety, non-toxic ingredients, cruelty-free) and does the research and validation so that purchasers can be confident in their choices and tin he integrity of their promises to the end-consumer. The products are not the lowest price, they are the highest quality. Salon owners who have not fully absorbed The Nail Hub's education on consumer segmentation, pricing, and customer experience will not be a good fit within The Nail Hub's customer set. The Nail Hub business model has a high internal consistency and integrity. The Nail Hub has re-oriented to B2B service provider educating an entire industry to provide superior consumer experiences, better product quality and profitable operations — i.e., re-orienting from facing those challenges to helping others to face and overcome them. One of the cornerstones of the B2B services model is authentic subject matter expertise. The Nail Hub can help salon owners and nail technicians thrive through their independent action because Hermann and Elizabeth developed a deep subject matter expertise. They've been salon owners and faced all the developmental issues that owners face. They've trained nail technicians. They've evaluated salon equipment and they've committed their resources and time to researching high quality, innovative products that meet their highest standards. Hermann stresses that the arduous development of subject matter expertise is the necessary foundation for a trusted service business. Another is to choose customers carefully. The Nail Hub is making a substantial investment in their customers via their free training and education. The business model that they enable is specific: the highest standards, with the best trained operators, providing a reliably superior consumer experience. The pricing model is premium, which supports the use of the highest quality products and the provision of the highest quality salon environment. Race-to-the-bottom operators who pursue the lowest prices as a competitive edge are not a good fit in The Nail Hub ecosystem, and Hermann makes this a clear element of The Nail Hub's B2B communications. Choose your customers to match your positioning. The evaluation of the business model does not lie in conventional metrics. When the business model is to invest in the success of customers, the conventional metrics of revenue, margins and annual profits are not the primary measures of success (although, of course, they must be acknowledged). The evaluation of the model comes via the feedback loops. Is the educational service welcomed? Does it result in better operations on the part of salon owners? Do salon owners and independent technicians become customers for life? Do product manufacturers clamor for entry into The Nail Hub's curated product set? Are product trends — safe, non-toxic, healthy, etc. — moving in the desired direction? This is the entrepreneurial ethic: make customers more successful, make the world a better place. Lovecraft Country is a new 10-episode HBO series, based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, set in 1950s Jim Crow America. The story is about a young African American man whose search for his missing father begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and also terrifying monsters that could be pulled from the pages of horror fiction writer H.P Lovecraft’s weird tales. Writer and broadcaster Ekow Eshun reviews the series. We continue our interviews with the writers shortlisted for the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction. American author Jenny Offill discusses her acclaimed novel, Weather, about a female librarian struggling to cope with a domestic life haunted by the growing awareness of catastrophic climate change. National Prison Radio is run by a British prison-based charity, broadcasting programmes made by and for prisoners in over 100 prisons in the UK, and is the world's first national radio station of its kind. Next week they broadcast an ambitious radio drama – a 29 minute sci–fi adventure called Project Zed, conceived and produced by artist Ruth Beale, working with prisoners at HMP Lincoln. It was commissioned by Mansions of the Future - an arts and cultural hub in Lincoln City Centre. Samira is joined by Ruth and facilitator Sonia Rossington, who worked together with the prisoners to put the drama together. On Monday’s Front Row we heard from Natalia Kaliada, co-founder of the Belarus Free Theatre - the only company in Europe to be banned by their country’s government – who told us three of their members have been arrested in Minsk following the election. Their whereabouts and condition were unknown. Natalia returns to Front Row with an update. I this episode have a fun conversation with Dr. Beth Morris who is a family practice physician and a board-certified Lifestyle Medicine doctor in Greenville, South Carolina. We discuss diabetes, setting SMART goals, motivation, what ONE thing she recommends avoiding in your diet and much more. Enjoy and catch you next week! Elizabeth Morris, M.D., is a Family and Lifestyle Medicine physician with Greenville Health System in Greenville, South Carolina. As a competitive figure skater growing up, she was always interested in nutrition as a means of optimizing performance, and earned herself a spot on Team USA in 2005. She then moved on to study biomedical engineering at University of Virginia. It wasn’t until her medical training that she realized her interest in nutrition could be a career, and she then dedicated her elective time to working with various lifestyle medicine physicians around the U.S., including John McDougall, M.D., Neal Barnard, M.D., Ron Weiss, M.D., and Caldwell Esselstyn, M.D. After her training, Elizabeth had no doubt that Lifestyle Medicine is the key to addressing our chronic disease epidemic. Elizabeth is faculty at USC School of Medicine Greenville, a leader of the Lifestyle Medicine Education Collaborative, and an active member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. A few weeks ago, a woman named Elizabeth Morris who works in a Sex Toy Store in the UK, contacted me with a link to an article about anal sex. Elizabeth is a content researcher and company merchandiser for Carvaka Sex Toys – which aims to get more people informed and educated about their sex lives. Elizabeth is a self-acclaimed anal sex fan and describes that it is more physically and mentally pleasurable and fulfilling when done right. I am personally not as familiar or experienced with anal sex, so I definitely learned a lot on this episode. Elizabeth found herself giggling over my questions while I fumble for words, further highlighting my inexperience and awkwardness on the subject. Some of the subjects we've covered are: How Elizabeth (and the Carvaka Sex Toys store) wants to educate people about the full spectrum of sexual activities, including anal sex (3:23), thus the article she wrote. Guidelines on anal sex etiquette, the most basic of which being cleanliness where Elizabeth detailed the hygiene rituals recommended pre-anal sex (5:32). My personal experience with anal sex and the issues I encountered, as Elizabeth clarified how to avoid such issues through planning your meals and restroom habits (9:24). Elizabeth introduces the P-Spot and the important role it plays in anal sex, and how it can be stimulated (11:06). The stigma of society towards anal sex, especially when it is men that are being penetrated, and how it correlates with the traditional gender/sexual roles of dominants and submissives (14:15). Elizabeth sets straight the very important question – is the anus tighter than the vagina (19:40)? Kegel exercises, and how it affects the muscles surrounding the vagina and the anus for women (21:27). The recommended pace for thrusting in anal sex, what are good methods (23:00), and preferred tools to slowly introduce anal stimulation and enjoy anal sex for both men and women (30:31; 31:32; 34:16). Elizabeth's educated insights on the risks and dangers of anal sex, from simple bacterial infection, tissues tearing, sexually transmitted infections and diseases (27:47), and even anal leakage (36:44). Elizabeth also expounded on people putting odd objects in their bodies and how to make sure it is safe and doesn't get lost inside (39:00). In our first in this series of special episodes, we talk what Metacosmology is and how that can inform living and doing business in a new way. This grew out of our last conversation with Megan. You can listen to it here! You DO NOT need to listen to the previous episode for this one to make sense, but it fills in more of this whole discussion and is highly recommended. Show notes from this bonus episode with Megan Elizabeth Morris: Andy talks again with Megan Elizabeth Morris of Ideaschema. This is the first in a series of special bonus episodes of Holistic Business Radio entitled “The Metacosmologist is In.” That title begs the questions: “What is a metacosmologist?” and “Why is Megan one?” Megan says that she hopes Andy isn’t hoping for a serious answer because if he is he might be partially disappointed. The metacosmology thing is tongue-in-cheek and is kind of a joke with Megan, much like a lot of things are these days for Megan because everything she says might as well be made-up based on what she perceives as her experience in the world, which is what everyone does no matter how they describe themselves. Over the last few months, Megan had been trying to identify certain kinds of patterns in her life and in the world and in her perceptions and come up with some sort of word that would describe or refer to what she was doing when she worked on those patterns. It eluded her for a while, and she knew it had to do something with analogical thinking—where you understand Thing A by telling a story about Thing B—but she knew it also had a lot to do with different abstractions, levels and angles and permutations or patterns of things, and of course, she has zero academic background in this sort of observation and learning, other than her own self-directed reading and casual research. So she decided that if she could find something that referred to all of this and seemed logical, considering the way the English language works, that she would be happy. But ultimately, any of us is the metacosmologist when we seek to identify and understand those same patterns. She spends most of her time these days vacillating between being the Metacosmos and the metacosmologist, which is just another way of saying “between just being—like a rock or a tree or an animal or a Megan versus observing and thinking about what is the being that I am.” So that’s maybe a less complicated or a more complicated way of explaining part of it. Andy asks Megan what metacosmology means. Megan says that, for her, it’s a reference to the Universe being a Matryoshka nested doll, but something way more complex. So when she says “the Universe”—which is always what she has called it when referring to some kind of Big Thing—what she really means is the Metacosmos because what that represented to her felt so much more accurate considering the figuring that she had done. She says that it’s all her perception and that it starts to sound like crazy talk… until you start to look at all the pieces. So that’s what she’s doing: looking at all the pieces of what she is just referring to as the Metacosmos, which is maybe all of everything or maybe just her or a single atom in her body or whatever. There are a lot of directions from which metacosmology makes a lot of sense to her because the patterns all seems to fit together in really interesting ways. She admits that she doesn’t have a lot of experience talking about this in an abstract way, but in terms of how things relate to metacosmology in concrete ways, like if you’re talking about one specific thing; those are the things that she has been seeing over and over again and what she has bee...

Show notes from this episode with Megan Elizabeth Morris: Andy talks with Megan Morris about changing our perspective on money, business and life. Andy was really struck by a post that Megan made on Facebook. It goes like this: So, we're all trying to make *money*... money is all connected to our fear/survival stuff... But in many ways it seems silly -- every one of us so isolated, not talking about the things that we're not supposed to talk about because "not having enough money" is so freaking taboo. Trying to bootstrap it individually, worrying that we won't make the cut, doing our best to put on brave faces about it, feeling alone and lost sometimes. And might seem ridiculous at first, but can you imagine if every one of us who was trying to make money put our heads together and looked for ways to help one another? I bet we would need less money in order to have the things we need... and we might find better ways to get the money we need, too. Short of me having an actual plan in place (okay okay, give me time)... Who's in? ;} Andy asks Megan how things have been going for her since she made that post. Megan says that what has happened since that post is not what she expected. She thought it would take time to test and build, but the energy felt right and she realized that it could be done right now, that day. The development of this idea of people helping people has spread out over other areas of her life. What’s happening for her is that she’s seeing so many other areas and disciplines that are backing up this idea. She’s exploring connection—natural human connection—when two people really resonate on a deep frequency. She has really applied this question of “Why do people have such a hard time around money in our culture?” to her learning and reading and has really started to dig into it, even in day-to-day life. She says that basically, we think money is necessary, but really it’s not. She expects some argument to that concept. But it’s because we’re hanging on to this little money demon—anxiety, sadness, anger, brokenness; we don’t want it but we won’t let it go. Andy compares it to hanging on to a rope as you’re being dragged across a field. You don’t want to be dragged along, but you don’t want to let go either. Megan says that letting go seems like a really easy concept, but she recognizes that it takes a lot of time to do. She is astonished, for herself personally, that letting go of the money demon has been way easier than she thought it would be. She’s also amazed, though, at how long it has taken her to get where she is with it and how much further she has to go. With every step, she feels happier, safer, and freer to connect with people. Megan talks about her reading of Prometheus Rising by Robert Anton Wilson. In this book, we’re reminded that human beings evolved in tribes or packs. What we really needed to survive was the pack bond. If you were separated from the pack in the wilderness, you could die. So, to Megan, it makes sense that we human beings have within us a deep-seated need or drive to stay connected to the tribe: seek connection, stay relevant and useful to the pack, and center your love and your work in the pack. Her understanding of this concept has been massively transformed by reading Charles Eisenstein’s Sacred Economics, a book she highly recommends. Now, we live in a civilization that has taught us that instead of prizing the pack bond over everything—instead of being terrified of lo...
