Dr. Kristin Weiss and Buttercup the Oceanpup. Dr. Kristen Weiss is currently Communications Coordinator for the Long Term Ecological Research network. Previously, she was an early career fellow in Science Communication at the Center for Ocean Solutions, Stanford University, and before that a lecturer in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Southern California where she taught courses focused on ecology, sustainability, and natural resource management. Kristen received her PhD from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, where she studied marine governance using policy network analysis. Her goal is to continue communicating about significant environmental issues and contribute to better conservation and management strategies to protect our threatened ecosystems. In her free time she enjoys adventures with her tiny dog Buttercup–on her stand-up paddle board, at the beach, or in the forest. And taking naps. Kristen and I met at a 2 week fellowship sponsored by the Center for Ocean solutions six years ago, she had just recently adopted Buttercup a tiny yellow chihuahua that steals your heart away. When I first met the duo, it was like they had been together forever, the little dog looked like she woke up in Kristens arms… I am excited to dive into the platforms Kristen created with Buttercup to get her dog involved for creating a better world, and much more! Kathi George is the Global Response Project Manager for the Marine Mammal Center located in Sausalito, CA. She has over 15 years of experience with marine mammal entanglements, specializing in entangled whale response. She’s been on several large whale entanglement cases and trained many volunteers on how disentangle a whale. Kathi and I have been friends for several years now. We met when she first started the California Whale Rescue a non-profit dedicated to serving the community of volunteers who help to untangle entangled whales. Through working together, we came up with a budget and scope to help volunteers, through my efforts during my Sea Grant Fellowship I was able to secure their first major funds that would get the nonprofit off the ground. Since then with Kathi’s leadership she has partnered with one of the biggest marine mammal rescues in California and is leading other amazing projects related to her new role, which I can’t wait to learn more about in this discussion today. Conservationist and Photographer, Celina Chien, is giving a voice to wildlife in the age of the Anthropocene. "I stumbled across a few other photographers and I realized that I've never even considered it before as a medium of communicating conservation and communicating science but I found that it was the perfect bridge between conservation and scientists and the academic world and the public because, you know, we hear all these statistics and we hear about all these horrible facts, you know, the sixth mass extinction and you know it makes us feel helpless. And also it's just so big and abstract and having photos that can be shown, emotional connection between people and environmental issues. I think it can really start a discussion and spark action." Celina shares in her interview about finding photography and using it for science. In this episode she shares how a new conservation starts out in the field and why she connected with wildlife. Episode 062 - Communicate Like A Conservation Project Manager

One of the most powerful skills to master as a conservation project manager is communication, put simply know when it is time to talk, and not talk just for the sake of talking. We’ve all been to one of these meetings where someone just keeps talking about something that was covered already. Wishing the project manager would redirect the conversation back to the agenda. Or wishing the project manager would just end the meeting so the team can get back to work. Perhaps you are a conservation project manager or want to be one, today I share tips on how you can boost your communication skills so you can be wiser, listen to understand, and respect the time of your team members. Keep your meetings short, concrete, and frequent. Remember to include everyone, complement each other, don’t compete for attention. Because… as George Bernard Shaw states “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” Find out more about Projects For Wildlife Podcast www.projectsforwildlife.com How to Work With Me: www.projectsforwildlife.com/workwithme Join Projects For Wildlife In The Field: www.projectsforwildlife.com/inthefield Find us on: Facebook www.facebook.com/projectsforwildlife Instagram www.instagram.com/projectsforwildlife Tag us: #StandUpForWhatWeStandOn #ProjectsForWildlife   Check out the Shows on the Speak Up For Blue Network: Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakuforblue.com/group Check out the new Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Podcast App: http://www.speakupforblue.com/app Speak Up For Blue Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/speak-up-for-the-ocean-blue/id1010962669 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3mE8fDuPv6OiTZ64EfIob9 Marine Conservation Happy Hour Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2k4ZB3x Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2kkEElk ConCiencia Azul: Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2k6XPio Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2k4ZMMf Dugongs & Seadragons: Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2lB9Blv Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2lV6THt Environmental Studies & Sciences Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2lx86oh Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2lG8LUh Marine Mammal Science: Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2k5pTCI Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2k1YyRL

I was completely surprised and inspired by Katie’s commitment to work on the world’s most trafficked mammal. She is an advocate for the planet’s most at-risk species, Katie operates at the nexus between science, empathy, and storytelling. More than a decade of filmmaking across six continents has afforded Katie expertise in the field and in the editing room. Using her signature storytelling flair, Katie’s films explore how we live alongside nature, garnering accolades, accruing millions of views, and inspiring meaningful conservation victories. Her production company, Coral & Oak Studios, has partnered with many of the most recognizable names in wildlife filmmaking, including National Geographic, Smithsonian, BBC, HBO, and PBS. Katie’s film, Pangolin, is the winner of six best short awards including Jackson Wild’s 2017 Best Short category. Since its premiere, Pangolin has been translated into four languages, reaching over 75 million people while serving as an important tool for conservation. Two of her latest films, Where Life Begins, and Nigerians Fight to Protect the World’s Most Trafficked Mammal, have won awards at festivals in 2019. Goal setting sounds horrifying to some and fun to others. As a project manager, or if you strive to be one, you know that goals help you stay focused and move in the direction you want to go. Setting goals is taking control of your life - kinda. I say kinda because we know all things change and that we actually don’t have exact control of the outcome. The goal setting process starts with careful consideration of what you really want to achieve and ends with hard work to achieve it. This is why many people have trouble succeeding. In this episode I help make it simple and hopefully you will be motivated to start working on your 2020 goals!

One of my favorite topics in project management is stakeholder engagement. I love working with different stakeholders and finding ways to work together. There are 10 steps to engaging stakeholders effectively and a few checklist items that will help you streamline your engagement strategies. A stakeholder in a wildlife conservation project can be practical or financial supporter. They can be advocates or researchers, a large nonprofit, farmers or a cooperative of farmers, hunting organizations, government agencies, sanctuary or wildlife refuges leadership teams, or general community members. These are the people you will work with to get buy-in for your project or the project you are managing. Stakeholder engagement is important because the engaging part of the process helps translate stakeholder needs into conservation project goals. This process of translating needs to goals creates the foundation of effective strategy development. Taking the time to discover the point of consensus or shared motivation in the engagement process helps the group of stakeholders arrive at a decision and ensures that all are invested in a meaningful outcome.

This is the fifth and final episode in a project management series I set up to help leaders like you with the terminology and applications of project management for conservation research and projects. Project management is a lot like the scientific process is similar to… instead of having a hypothesis to test you have a set of objectives to accomplish. The best part of project management is that there is an end to the project. It’s the defining feature of a project - All projects have a final due date. If you are one of those people who love accomplishing something then project management might be for you because as you know finishing something feels really good! You can find the project management series by going to episodes 023, 029, 036, and 038 on the projects for wildlife.com website. I created this series because to address a fundamental flaw of conservation research and something that holds us back from accomplishing what we are trying to achieve and this is it.. … it’s that recommendations from conservationist research get stuck in papers and never find their way out of a paper and actually implemented. As you may already know, many times these research papers are full of amazing mitigation recommendations that were proposed and agreed upon by all the stakeholders... and then nothing happens after the paper is published. There are lots of reasons why, and really this area is not well studied… although it happens ALL the time. It’s my belief that we can use project management techniques and tools to take those recommendations out of the paper and implement them in a way that will benefit humans and wildlife. Instead of creating the dream… let’s make the dream reality and we can do it with project management. This series focused on human-wildlife conflict, coexistence, and projects that have taken different mitigations and applied them for the benefit of both humans and wildlife. From lions, to wolves, bears, and now elephants you have seen how a large variety of people from government to academia and from rancher to advocate there are a lot of people involved in finding solutions. It’s my hope that over the course of the last four episodes that the use of project management tools and strategies can easily be used take recommendations in a paper and apply them and grow ideas and collaborations. This is my favorite phase of project management, the closure. All projects should end with a celebration!

This is the fourth episode in a project management series I set up to help leaders like you with the terminology and applications of project management for conservation research and projects. Project management is a lot like the scientific process is similar to… instead of having a hypothesis to test you have a set of objective to accomplish. I want to demonstrate with project management tools and strategies we can easily take recommendations in a paper and start to apply them. “Project management”, then, is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet the project requirements. It has always been practiced informally, but began to emerge as a distinct profession in the mid-20th century. Project management processes fall into five groups and in this episode we focus on Phase 3 Execution! Also, I have a thing for wolves and coexisting with them this year. Since they are under threat for being removed from the ESA and have not recovered to their original population numbers I feel that we need to keep talking about wolves. They are the closest mammal to our beloved dogs. They have family units that resemble human families. They deserve to live in the wild and we are responsible for maintaining habitat for them. I find that recommendations from conservation research gets stuck in the virtual universe and never finds their way out into the space for people to implement. Through the Project Management Case Study Series I want to use project management techniques and tools to take those recommendations to the next level and create the changes we’ve already suggested. In this episode we are going to talk about connection of bacteria and the environment. Dr. Varela’s research is showing that food-borne pathogens are becoming antibiotic resistant. These enter our environment through food animals - in waste streams and production. Polluting our water and land. The reduction of antibiotics as a growth mechanism in food animals is now being banned globally - yet there is a concern about resistance and a looming food shortage in the near future. Let’s have a look at the importance of bacteria - especially for creating a healthy environment that we promote survival of biodiversity. One more plug before we get started. Episode 034 - Case Study: Key Factors that Drive Human-Wildlife Conflict

One of the reasons I launched the Projects for Wildlife podcast was specifically to discuss human-wildlife conflict, what it is, why it exists, and how we can coexist with wildlife. And most importantly how do we set up projects that will create benefits for humans and wildlife. With climate change, loss of habitat, the expanding human population there will be more biodiversity conflicts and challenges - this means more human-wildlife conflict. This prediction has been shared among the scientific community world wide - and it is up to us to decide how to use the best available science to reduce conflict and develop strategies to achieve conservation goals and sustainable living among human populations. There is both a wildlife conservation view point and a human sustainability issue that is at the core of most human-wildlife conflict. If we are to protect wildlife we have to address the human issues. In most countries the first wildlife management strategy used by the government is to kill an animal or population. Even in first world countries like the U.S. - the Wildlife Services Department kills wildlife instead of find non-lethal solutions. In the U.S. there is a change in beliefs on how wildlife are managed. With questions like “how should managers handle human-wildlife conflict, endangered species restoration, and predator control?” In this episode I talk about two different studies about attitudes of conservation and key factors that drive human-wildlife conflict.
