In this ClimateGenn episode, Professor of Climate Risk at University of Newcastle, Hayley Fowler, and Professor Paul Davies, Chief Meteorologist at the UK Met Office, explain how the mega storm events we are now seeing so frequently, are generated and why they are going to get more intense and more widespread. This was recorded just after the incredible central European flooding in the 1st half of September. Since then the media has been filled with images of Hurricane Milton and now we see the area around Valencia in Spain is lying in ruins.  With the UN Climate Summit only days away, we are witnessing a decisive US election where one of the nominees denies we have an existential climate problem in favour of taking money from the fossil fuel industry and enacting policies that amplify the impact. Will COP29 be another washout like COP22 in Morocco in 2016? Only time will tell. I will be reporting from the COP publishing a range of interviews across key topics.

Adam Bastock was enjoying a successful career in digital marketing when he realised the planet was in crisis and decided to do something about it. In 2020 he set up Small99 with a mission to help the UK's small businesses become more sustainable and reduce their carbon footprint. He's gone from strength to strength since then. Adam is the brain behind People, Planet, Pint – a social meetup for anyone concerned about climate change and sustainability. Originally devised as a meetup after COP22 in Adam's hometown of Glasgow, PPP has gone on to operate in 75 cities across 10 countries. Community, it's clear, is a great catalyst and enabler of change. In this episode Jen, Cat and Dom chat with Adam to hear how SME's are responding to the climate crisis and what role he thinks communication plays in successful community building and behaviour change. About Adam Adam is the founder of Small99. Small99™ is helping small businesses to take positive action to reduce their carbon footprint to become more sustainable and profitable. Vision - Our Ambition To create the Small99™ Carbon Reduction Community – a positive and energetic force that supports small businesses to make their vital contribution to the UK's carbon reduction targets. Mission At Small99™ we provide practical support, tools and local meetups to start 1 million small businesses on their path to net zero by 2025. We're doing this because existing guidance often overlooks small businesses, yet 99% of businesses in the UK employ fewer than 49 employees - together they can make a huge contribution to reducing the UK's carbon output. Our Story Small99™ is helping small businesses to take positive action to reduce their carbon footprint to become more sustainable and profitable. The UK's small business community has the power to make a vital contribution to our carbon reduction targets. Small99™ is creating a movement for change – a movement that is empowering small businesses by creating a portfolio of practical tools, support and networking opportunities. The Small99™ process is practical, approachable and, importantly, it aligns with the targets of companies like Microsoft. It enables small businesses to evaluate their footprint, set targets for reducing it and measure their progress. The Small99™ team is ambitious for change and aims to connect with one million businesses by 2025 – businesses that can, with our help, improve their sustainability and profitability and help the UK meet its carbon reduction targets. How we do it You can join us at our People, Planet, Pint™ events held across the UK and internationally. They're a great way to meet other small businesses, to share your challenges, ideas and experiences so that you can learn from others. You can attend one of our CRAB (Carbon Reduction Action Box) workshops where, in a couple of hours, you can create a baseline for your carbon reduction plan, scope your next steps and make some good connections along the way. You can access our online Carbon Reduction Measurement tool to help you take action and monitor your progress. It's a simple, effective and accessible and provides the information you need to plan for and reduce your carbon Footprint. You can get expert support from our team when you need help to stay on track. You can estimate your digital carbon footprint quickly in detail too. Already, we've engaged with more than 9,000 businesses in the past 2 years through our workshops, tools and events. We organise around 60 events a month across the world to bring small businesses together - including Chicago, Singapore and Australia. Join the Small99™ Carbon Reduction Movement – it's simple, accessible anddesigned to help you and your business to become more sustainable and Profitable.   Our Work Small99 has directly trained over 6,000 businesses in the past 2 years on the topic of Net Zero, focusing on small businesses that were feeling overwhelmed and confused by the existing guidance available. Adam Bastock, Small99 Founder, studied at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainable Leaders (CISL), and has since worked with multiple organisations throughout the UK under the Small99™ brand. Some of Small99's partnerships include: “Net Zero 360”, with Clean Growth UK, to guide hundreds of businesses to measure and reduce their footprint. The development and delivery of lightweight, first step, sustainability workshops with Small Business Britain. “Step up to Net Zero” with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, a fully funded placement program for 60 businesses. "If going to a TGO gym can help unlock your potential not only for your life, but for your community, for your planet, that's the end game."Georgie Delaney MBE isn't short on a big vision. But critically - she's also not short on taking action. It was wonderful to talk to her about setting up and growing The Great Outdoor Gym Company (TGO). From a seed of inspiration seeing outdoor gyms in China after the Beijing Olympics, to high level backing in the London 2012 Olympics, to now having more than 2000 outdoor gyms globally. It's been a heck of a journey so far.Oh, and on the way, invites to exhibit at COP21 and COP22.And then there was the MBE...To be fair, a TGO gym is no ordinary gym. It generates power. It charges phones. It supports tree planting. It fosters community. And all while staying true to its mission and promoting inclusivity, unity and charity. This is quite a different episode. Of course, we talk about the specifics of the business journey Georgie's been on - the challenges and victories of going from startup to success and international scale. We talk about the role of luck, and how luck often has 2 bookends which are under your control. The first is continually taking action, which invariably creates more opportunities for luck to find you. And the second is what you do with the luck that's made its way to you.But we also talk about religion. Georgie is very much a Christian, and guided by Christian values which manifest in how she runs her business. Most visibly in love, and in community.Love sits at the heart of how she started and grew the Great Outdoor Gym Company. She founded it with people she loved, to serve a humanity she loves while serving a planet we all should love more. And that translates to community. The gyms often give opportunities for communities to form. She talks movingly about the interfaith community that's sprung up around one of her gyms in East London.Georgie's is a business with purpose and values very much at its heart. And it's a business that wears that heart on its sleeve.A deeper dive. And I think for both of us, a bit of therapy!Enjoy._______________I host a weekly online workshop with CEOs of SMEs (10 to 100 employees approx) about scaling up, allowing them to step back and do more strategic work, and doing it in line with their values. Max 6 per session so we can have a real conversation. If you'd like to join me, find a date that works for you here. They aren't charged for - you and I will both get value from the conversation.Only CEOs / MDs apply - strictly peer-level conversation.

On the last day of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change - or COP22 as it is better known - in Egypt, it is understood that some of the major issues have not yet been resolved and there is a risk that the talks will fail. Ar an lá deireanach de Chomhdháil na Náisiún Aontaithe ar Athrú Aeráide - nó COP22 mar is fearr aithne uirthi - san Éigipt, tuigtear nach bhfuil cuid de na mórcheisteanna réitithe go fóill agus tá baol ann go dteipfidh ar na cainteanna. Representatives from 194 countries are present at COP22, which is taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh. Tá ionadaí ó 194 tír i láthair ag COP22, atá ar siúl in Sharm el- Sheikh. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned the representatives of the different countries that they will all face destruction if they do not succeed in making progress. Chuir Ard-Rúnaí na Náisiún Aontaithe, Antonio Guterres, fainic ar ionadaithe na dtíortha éagsúla go mbeidh léirscrios i ndán dóibh ar fad mura n- éiríonn leo dul chun cinn a dhéanamh. He said that the talks have fallen apart and that the trust between poor countries and rich countries is smart. Dúirt sé go bhfuil na cainteanna tite as a chéile agus go bhfuil cliste ar an múinín idir tíortha bochta agus tíortha saibhre. It was expected that world governments would demonstrate during this conference that they intended to step up their efforts to achieve the goals set for them under the Paris Climate Agreement (2015). Bhíothas ag súil go léireodh rialtais dhomhanda i rith na comhdhála seo go raibh sé i gceist acu dlús a chur faoina n-iarrachtaí na spriocanna atá leagtha síos dóibh faoi Chomhaontú Aeráide Pháras (2015) a bhaint amach. In order to achieve these goals, they would have to adopt many more cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and agree on an international fund worth €100bn, which would provide assistance to developing and underserved countries. with climate change. Chun na haidhmeanna sin a chur i gcrích, bheadh orthu lear mó ciorruithe ar astaíochtaí gás ceaptha teasa a ghlacadh agus aontú a bhaint amach maidir le ciste idirnáisiúnta gurbh fhiú €100bn é, a chuirfeadh cúnamh ar fáil do thíortha atá i mbéal forbartha agus atá thíos le hathrú aeráide. We shared some good news about the decrease in abortions in some parts of the nation after the Dobbs decision. The magnifying glass was turned on the just completed COP22 climate summit as we looked at the results of the meetings and China’s not so commonly known participation in the push for climate change. Strongly held convictions can lead to difficult conversations that can sometimes derail the goal of sharing the hope of the gospel with others.

How can economics deal with climate change? In this interview, Martin Wolf, Associate Editor and Chief Economics Commentator of the Financial Times, talks about the crucial importance of dealing with climate change and discusses the ways in which economic analysis and policy can help. He shares his views on the milestone COP21 agreement and the role of taxes and regulation dealing with climate change. Martin assesses the potential of using more environmentally inclusive economic accounting measures to help deal with environmental issues, and shares his views on emerging economic models that emphasize low or no-growth economic activity. What emerges finally, in this wide-ranging, personal, interview, is a resolutely optimistic vision, one where man's capacity to invent and innovate can provide solutions to overcome the growing environmental challenges we face.   Martin Wolf is a distinguished and highly respected financial and economic journalist and commentator – covering a very wide range of economic, financial and other topics –and has recently been a strong voice on the importance of dealing with climate change.  He has received numerous awards for his work — including a CBE for services to financial journalism in 2000 –and was appointed a member of the UK government's Independent Commission on Banking in June 2010. Martin's most recent publications are Why Globalization Works and The Shifts and the Shocks: What we've learned – and have still to learn – from the financial crisis, published in 2015. This interview was undertaken last year prior to the COP22 and prior to the election of Donald Trump.

After several false starts, many experts now believe that the green finance sector is at a tipping point. Investors are paying attention to ESG factors as never before, there is an explosion of investor interest in green bonds, and195 countries adopted the first-ever universal, fully ratified global climate deal in Paris in 2015. In this podcast, eco-finance pioneer Tessa Tennant gives her view on recent developments in green finance, explores the implications of the Paris Agreement, and talks about her latest initiative NDCi.global –which aims to connect professionals around the world working to finance and implement the national climate commitments (NDCs) underlying the recently ratified Paris Agreement. Finally in an update to the original podcast, Tessa gives her feedback on COP22 and looks at a possible future where the US government is less committed to taking action on climate change.

Special Election Coverage. In this episode, America Adapts is hosting James Stillwell, Program Manager for Climate Implementation at the University of Maryland, reporting from Marrakech, Morocco from the Cop22 climate change negotiations. Also, I speak with EcoAdapt’s MaryKay Gewiss and Alex Score, on next year’s big National Adaptation Forum. First, I check in with James, who’s in Morocco, following up with his role at the 2016 Paris Climate agreement (previous podcast topic).  We learn what other countries are saying about the climate agreement in light of Donald Trump’s presidential election win.  James seeks to provide a reality check on what happens next. We learn what it might mean if the U.S. exited the agreement; the difficulties involved with such an action; and the rest of the world’s desire to move on even if America does exit the talks.  James also shares his perspective on debating noted climate skeptic, Myron Ebell (available on youtube), the man responsible for the transition at the Environmental Protection Agency. He gives his insight on what Mr. Ebell's approach might be and offers a broader perspective on potential limits to that approach. Finally, James gives his parting thoughts on what Americans can expect from the Marrakech negotiations.  In a major pivot, I then talk with Alex and WendyKay about next year’s National Adaptation Forum in St. Paul, Minnesota, in May.  No matter what the results of the election are, adaptation planners will continue to work and convene and share information on the best ways to adapt to the impacts of climate change.  We talk about previous forums and what to expect at this forum. There are new themes and plenaries topics, looking to expand what sectors would be interested in attending the event.  We share advice to federal employees who may be concerned about their ability to travel under a new administration.  Also, the deadline to submit oral and poster presentations is December 16th, so please hurry if you are considering doing this.  Finally, I end the podcast with an election discussion with Tim Watkins in the Adaptation and Wine Power hour, trying to find ‘silver molecules’ on what a Trump presidency might mean for the adaptation field.  And stay tuned for next week's episode, as Dr. Michael Mann, legendary professor behind the ‘hockey stick’ research, and author of “ The Madhouse Effect”, comes on the podcast.   Finally, yes, most of your favorite podcasts are supported by listeners just like you!  For more information on this podcast, visit the website at http://www.americaadapts.org and don't forget to subscribe to this podcast on Itunes.  Also, follow on Facebook at America Adapts!  Check us out, we’re also on YouTube!

The Sustainable Futures Report

This week, are we on the threshold of the greatest shake-up of environmental regulation we've ever seen? Last December COP21 resulted in the Paris Agreement. The United Nations now say that enough nations have ratified the agreement to make it legally binding. Legally binding on whom? Maybe we'll learn more at COP22, which is now running in Marrakech. How are we actually going to achieve the emissions reductions that the Paris Treaty requires? Lord Stern says we'll need net zero emissions. Does that imply geo-engineering? We'll have a look at that.  On the energy front, Lord Turner says that ultra-low-cost renewables are at hand and Iceland is digging deeper into its geothermal reserves. Meanwhile the British government has responded to the court's demand that it should do something about air quality (not quite so bad as in India) and DIF16, the latest Disruptive Innovation Festival is in progress. Finally, hear about the amazing expanding moped. Text and references as usual at anthonyday.blogspot.com

I dag, 7 november 2016, börjar COP22, klimatförhandlingarna i Marrakech. Detaljerna skall fyllas i följande förhandlingar. Martin
