Rush Sturges grew up in Forks of Salmon, California, where his parents own and operate Otter Bar Lodge, a destination kayak school on the Salmon River. His upbringing at Otter Bar Lodge exposed him to kayaking and film making at a young age. As a young teen, Rush filmed and edited videos of Otter Bar's week-long kayaking retreats, which he would then sell to that week's clients. Rush is credited with having invented several freestyle moves including the pistol flip and the hail mary. The hail mary involves doing a complete front flip over a waterfall, and is one of the most cutting edge moves in freeboating. Follow Rush here: https://www.facebook.com/TheAdrenalineRush
In Episode 9 of Secret Level, we talk about director Joe Dante's 1985 sci-fi adventure film Explorers. The movie stars Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson and it told the completely bonkers story of how they built a spaceship out of trash and end up on an alien ship with a couple of wacky and gross aliens, one of which Phoenix's character is crushing on. This was a fun film to watch as a kid, but it had some major problems during production and Dante didn't even get to finish the film before it was released, which is why the ending is so bad! We share all kinds of fascinating behind-the-scenes info, point out some fun Easter eggs, and give us some enjoyable trivia and commentary. If you've ever seen this movie, you're gonna enjoy this! A midwestern American in the 1300s does medieval battle against the slimiest of bearded slimeballs and his horrifying mom/witch.This week we revisit a forgotten blockbuster, the 2nd biggest movie of 1991 after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Kevin Costner stars as the fabled Robin of Locksley, in this dark retelling a veteran of the Crusades returned home to find Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham poised to claim the throne of England. With one of the greatest movie themes and one of the worst British accents, the Gi5 boys sit through a severe mess, coming close-to-but-never-quite-reaching the status of guilty pleasure. Enjoy. Also, one thing we forgot to mention in air - In the beginning Marian's brother, after having been locked away in prison for 5 years, gives Robin his family ring as he dies...Where was he hiding that ring??Joining us for his third appearance, the one-and-only (which I'm realizing we say about every guest) Mike Lacy. Lacy has a (fucking still) forthcoming podcast centered around the filmography of one Thomas Cruise, so be sure to keep an eye (and ear) out for that. Frit's humour and vulnerability makes her insightful and relatable as she talks about her journey into adventure filmmaking, and how she knows when she is on the right path. Leaving us with the advice “Just follow what feels good” Frit talks about how long it took her to do that very thing and what the obstacles were that were standing in her way.

A couple of weeks ago I emceed a panel at the 5point Adventure Film Festival, a 4 day event in Carbondale, Colorado chocked full of inspiring films, creative art, insightful panels, and a whole lot of playing, eating and drinking outside. As I reflect on the overall experience of the festival, I have to say it was pretty incredible. Between the amazing 5point staff, the magic of the Carbondale community, and the world class outdoor recreation, it's hard to beat. Needless to say, I highly recommend checking it out. Today on the show, I'll be sharing a live recording of the panel that I lead, which was a discussion about the 5points (or core values) that the film festival was built on - purpose, respect, commitment, humility, and balance. The aim was to explore how these values align with the panelists personal, professional, and spiritual life and growth. The panel included an eclectic mix of community leaders, film makers, adventurers and entrepreneurs. I'd like to give a proper introduction and bio to each of the 5 panels because they are each doing such exciting work. Regna Jones is the Executive Director of the 5point film festival and is no stranger to arts-based community non-profits, having led operations at Aspen Film and owned Paradise Theatre in Paonia Colorado. Although she is new to 5point, she is already a beloved member of the staff and community. Cameron Ford and Charlie Turnbull are Australian cinematographers and directors. In 2018, the debuted one of the most popular films at 5point called The Bikes of Wrath, which documents the story of 5 friends as they attempt to cycle from Oklahoma to California in honor of the famous John Steinbeck novel, the Grapes of Wrath. Cameron and Charlie just completed a sequel journey floating the entirety of the Mississippi River in their newest project, Floatin' with Huck, which is due to come out some time next year. Ian Glover is the founder of Big Dog Surf Camp in Marin, California and is the subject of a film directed by Perry Gershkow called Glory Ride. The film depicts Ian (also known as Big Dog), as he empowers kids by teaching them to surf, but also explores a gut wrenching personal story of homelessness, death, and gratitude. Sarah Herron is the founder of She Lift, which empowers girls with physical differences to discover confidence through outdoor adventure and body-positive mentorship. She recently produced a film being showcased at 5point called Dead Last, which shares the story of Kaitlin Heatherly on a quest to compete at the Paraclimbing World Championships. Just as a heads up, this conversation really pulled at my heart strings (and so did the entire 5point experience), so if you're a movie buff or a sucker for the feels - this episode is for you. If you're interested in learning more about the films and the people behind them, head on over to 5pointfilm.org and as always, I'll have all the details in the show notes at jeremyrjensen.com. A before we dive in, a huge thanks to the whole staff at 5point, especially Regna Jones, Meredith McKee and Sarah Jane Johnson. Also, a big hug to Deva and Eaden Shantay at True Nature Healing Arts for hosting us in such a beautiful venue, and Frank Scotti of Nomad, Inc for the killer photography work. Cool without further ado, my conversation with Regna Jones, Cameron Ford, Charlie Turnbull, Ian Glover, and Sarah Herron - live from the 5point Adventure Film Festival. Enjoy!
From the opening frames, a recent movie by Canadian adventure film maker Heather Mosher lets viewers know exactly what they're in for. World class rock climber Kevin Jorgeson mugs at the camera and chuckles while his partner Jacob Cook holds up a bloody finger. This particular pitch on the Tom Egan Memorial Route in the Bugaboos of British Columbia was first climbed by Will Stanhope and Matt Segal back in 2015. Blood On The Crack is a pencil-thin fissure on a sheer vertical slab of granite. It's the perfect project for any aspiring rock climber or an adventure film maker. I first met Heather Mosher seven years ago when she was just a volunteer at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. A few weeks ago she sent me link to watch her latest film, a nine-minute short called Blood On The Crack. Let's just say I loved it. So got her on the phone to ask her a few questions about her life and career in film making. Adventure Film Maker Heather Mosher “Going to the Banff Mountain Film Festival in 2012 kind of there's a bit of a spark even though I didn't know it at the time,” Mosher told me in our interview. “I already knew I wanted to be a photographer. I started working in the photography industry in Vancouver and then as I moved out of that full time job the thing that sparked the filmmaking direction was going to Banff and being like ‘I want to make an adventure documentary.” So I've met up with local filmmakers and went, ‘Teach me about sound!' And they said, ‘Sure come on over to our studio and we'll show you our microphones. And they taught me basically how to edit. And that's what's taken me to where I am now.” Blood on the Crack (trailer) from Heather Mosher on Vimeo. Heather Mosher is a rising young creative in a new generation of adventure film makers. Taking her passion for storytelling and life in the outdoors she's producing compelling movies that are worth watching and definitely worth talking about. In this episode of the Joy Trip Project we discuss the process of making an adventure documentary and how this young producer got to work with one of the most sought after professional rock climbers in the world. Kevin Jorgeson and Jacob Cook photo by Kaare Iverson The film Blood On The Crack featuring Kevin Jorgeson and Jacob Cook is making its way around the world wide adventure film festival circuit so watch for it in programs and play lists in the coming months. Sarah Menzies is all in. Whether it's her adventure documentary film career or her relationships, Sarah is fully committed to following through on giving back to others. The filmmaker behind the short pieces, "The Mirnavator" and "A Steelhead Quest," Sarah's first full-length documentary film, "Afghan Cycles" is debuting at Hot Docs April 29th. These women ride despite cultural barriers, despite infrastructure, and despite death threats, embracing the power and freedom that comes with the sport. With the help of her girlfriend Katilin Bailey, we talk with Sarah about the evolution of her promising career. The Perennial Popularity of the Adventure Film is our topic on this edition of Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site. We recall three adventure films in particular: Lost Horizon, King Solomon's Mines, and Valley of the Kings, We compare these films to later releases such as the Indiana Jones series. These earlier films are rooted in such things as best-selling literature, and the recurring theme of finding evidence to support religious faith. Adventure films have always been a favorite of American movie audiences for years, and in reviewing some of these great motion pictures, we hope to rekindle memories of some of your favorites. Our Retro-Commercial is for Colgate toothpaste. Come join us on Galaxy Moonbeam Night Site.
