How much do you know about Black history? From African women's rebellions on slave ships to a former enslaved man whose account of the first Juneteenth differs from what we hear today, to Benjamin Banneker's life, to how Islam found its way into American popular music in multiple genres, there is a lot of information that doesn't necessarily make it into your average curriculum. In A High Price for Freedom: Raising Hidden Voices From the African-American Past, author and historian Clyde W. Ford addresses these and other topics, seeking to illuminate and amplify little-known figures from the past, from Elizabeth Key's court case in the 1600s to the true mission of the marches in Selma to more modern accounts. The title of the book takes its name from a young man named Jimmie Lee Jackson, who was killed in 1965 by an Alabama state trooper. As he lay dying in the only hospital that would treat Black people, Jimmie Lee whispered to his nurse, a nun, "Sister, isn't this a high price for freedom?" Ford's latest release includes factual accounts about people and events in the African-American past that teach things many of us never learned and may challenge the stories we thought we knew. Clyde W. Ford is the author of fifteen works of fiction and nonfiction, and is a psychotherapist, an accomplished mythologist, and a sought-after public speaker. In 2006, Ford received the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Award in African American fiction. In 2019, he was named a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Award in African American nonfiction. In 2021, Clyde received the prestigious Washington Center for the Book Award, the Nautilus Book Award in Social Justice, and was a finalist for the Goddard-Russo Prize in Social Justice for Think Black. Clyde was honored as a "Literary Lion" by the King County Library System in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2019. He was voted "Best Writer of Bellingham, Washington" in 2006 and 2007 by readers of Cascadia Weekly and received the 2007 Bellingham Mayor's Arts Award in Literature. Ford is currently a speaker for Humanities Washington, an affiliate of the NEA, where he presents a program entitled, "Technology, Race and Social Justice," around the state. He is also the Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library Publishing Project at HarperCollins. Clyde has participated in hundreds of media interviews and has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, New Dimensions Radio, and NPR. He lives in Bellingham, Washington, where he founded the city's annual Martin Luther King Day commemoration in 1991, and enjoys walking the mountains and cruising the waters of the Pacific Northwest. Dana Micucci redefines danger for the modern lightworker not as external threat, but as the peril of spiritual bypassing and succumbing to fear or lower collective consciousness. Unlike 20th-century internal work, the 21st-century task is active internal mastery to hold and anchor high-frequency light amidst global chaos and intense energy shifts. This internal mastery is crucial for external impact. The Lesson in Mastery: From Seeking to Embodying Truth The memoir, a sequel to Sojourns of the Soul, marks a pivotal shift: the 'lesson in mastery' is moving from seeking truth externally (via sacred travel) to embodying that truth internally. This profound shift is the foundation for applying spiritual wisdom to complex modern life, validating the current memoir as an essential guide for the lightworker journey. Ma'at: Ancient Egyptian Wisdom for the Digital Age Micucci shares the powerful ancient Egyptian principle of Ma'at (truth, balance, and cosmic order), encountered at the sacred temples of Egypt. This ancient wisdom is surprisingly practical for navigating modern issues like misinformation and polarizing technology. Ma'at serves as a vital spiritual compass for filtering digital input by aligning words, thoughts, and actions with truth and balance. Essential Spiritual Tool: Conscious Breathwork For newcomers beginning their spiritual path, the single most essential spiritual tool is conscious, focused breathwork. This simple technique instantly interrupts the fearful, egoic mind, anchors the individual in the present, and connects them to their innate power and grace. The breath is highlighted as the most accessible bridge between mind, body, and spirit. Planetary Transformation: The Challenge and The Opportunity The current period of intense planetary transformation presents two key facets from a lightworker's view: Greatest Challenge: The temptation to disconnect or fall into despair amidst global crises. Greatest Opportunity: The unprecedented acceleration of soul evolution. The current evolutionary waves force humanity to confront shadows, offering a unique chance to rapidly ascend into higher consciousness and co-create the New Earth. Trusting the Higher Guiding Force Micucci shares how a personal test or transformation—a period of loss and uncertainty—revealed that apparent "breakdown" was the higher guiding force clearing old foundations. By embracing deep surrender, she recognized the timely appearance of support as confirmation that this force was conspiring on her behalf. The Final Action Step: Radical Self-Compassion The final, practical action step Micucci hopes readers take after finishing The Years of Living Dangerously is to practice radical self-forgiveness and self-compassion. Choosing to unconditionally love the self and silence the internal critic is deemed the most profound way to 'open their hearts to the evolutionary waves of change' and become a clear channel for light. How did NYC become the epicenter of all the tensions and promise of American society and politics, and do the Buddhist teachings have anything to offer to understanding this political moment? Using the rise of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani in his home city—a city of perpetual immigrants—Ethan explores themes of community engagement, sangha, social democracy and the power of standing up for what you believe in to talk about this chaotic (yet potent) moment on Earth. Drawing on concepts from his latest book, Confidence, Ethan explores how it is that our self-assessment can be so off the mark so frequently, especially when it comes to seeing our progress along a long-term path like meditation, or the deeper journey of spiritual and psychological . Why is it so hard assess our traits, and to see our strengths as well as our stuck places, clearly? How can we overcome our negativity bias and meet the inner critic more skillfully in everyday life. What does it mean to develop clarity when asking ourselves the question: "How am I doing, really?" In this episode, Ethan discusses the crucial question of “enlightenment,” better translated as “awakening.” What does this word mean? What doesn't it mean? How would we know if we were really there? Is awakening a big deal? And most importantly, how can we glimpse it, or notice the glimpses we are already having of our awakening, and build off of those powerful moments with confidence in our development? Ethan discusses three reasons we take vows and make commitments from a Buddhist perspective, and gives special emphasis to The Bodhisattva Vow, where we commit to not only pursue our own path of liberation and awakening, but also vow to work for the benefit of all beings, to the limits of space, until all beings are awake. It is a commitment to the collective liberation of all beings. Of course, this is impossible (at least in our lifetimes), so why would we agree to do it? Using the classic structure of the vow, along with modern commentary, Ethan dissects the reasons we would take on such a commitment. Ethan briefly mentions a much earlier episode of the podcast, where he discusses the first vow along the Buddhist path (The refuge vow). That episode can be found here. Ethan welcomes Buddhist Geeks Co-Founder, teacher, and Palestinian-American Dharma teacher Vince Fakhoury Horn. They discuss the rise of "podcast dharma" in the early 21st century, Vince's path to teaching meditation, Vince's experience of his Palestinian heritage, why it's hard to get Dharma teachers to speak out about the genocide in Gaza, The Buddhist practice of Mohsen Mahdawi, and the complex legacy of Chogyam Trungpa and Tibetan refugees in relation to the Palestinian experience. Vince Fakhoury Horn is part of a new generation bringing dharma, meditation, & mindfulness to life in the 21st century. A computer engineering dropout turned full-time meditator, Vince spent his 20s co-founding the ground-breaking project, Buddhist Geeks, while simultaneously doing a full year, in total, of silent retreat practice. Vince began teaching in 2010 and has since been authorized in both the Pragmatic Dharma lineage of Kenneth Folk, and by Trudy Goodman (InsightLA) & Jack Kornfield of (Spirit Rock Meditation Center) in the Insight Meditation tradition. This is the 150th episode of The Road Home Podcast! Yay, Big Deal! But, it's—as always—also a conversation about the Dharma, and the mind, and how to work with your own experience. And your mind, especially during meditation, can be boring. Very boring. So why is boredom such a difficult, yet important—and creative—experience? What do we do about boredom in meditation practice, as well as boredom in daily life? Using a teaching on working with boredom in three stages, along with teachings from earliest Buddhism on the “hindrance” of restlessness, Ethan unpacks the creative power of boredom. It's an incredibly important reframe of this very human experience, but don't worry, it's not that exciting after all. Enjoy! (This episode of The Road Home is dedicated to the memory of Joanna Macy—founder of the Eco-Dharma and Deep Ecology Movements—who passed this weekend at the age of 96) On this episode, a follow-up to episode 148, Ethan explores wealth and generosity from a tantric perspective. If you could take the view, for just one moment, that you, your perceptions, and your world were all perfect in being exactly what they were, how would that change your experience of yourself, your resources, and your participation in society? What is generosity (“dana” in the Buddhist languages) from a Tantric perspective? How does tantra change our ability to practice Dana, or "fluid exchange" with our experience? In the second part of a two episode discussion, Ethan looks at an understanding of wealth and generosity in the Vajrayana systems of Buddhist practice, incorporating themes of spacious awareness, teacher Rick Hanson's crucial four-step practice of “Taking in the Good,” and the practices of Ratna Jewel, Golden Key and Enriching Presence from the Tantric and Shambhala traditions. What is generosity (“dana” in the Buddhist languages), and how does it relate to our experience of wealth, our consumption, our labor, and our shared values as a society? How can we work with our craving for always have more like one of those a metal claw machines in a video game arcade, leaving us unable to live in the practice of Dana, or "fluid exchange" with our experience? Similarly, how do we create a society that acknowledges the sacredness of labor and the social benefits of collective generosity? How can we as a society generate wealth without the fixation to hoard billions of dollars? In the first part of a two episode discussion, Ethan looks at an understanding of wealth and generosity in the "Hinayana" and "Mahayana" systems of Buddhist practice, and next week in Episode 149 he will look at a Vajrayana understanding of wealth and generosity through the "Ratna Jewel of Enriching Presence." How we work with our minds in the spaces between collapse and rebirth (those uncomfortable gaps in life as well as the huge “gap” after death) hold the key to creating futures that do not replicate the stuckness and suffering of our past. This is true both personally and collectively. As always, with recent world events in mind, we discuss the six bardos of classic Tibetan Buddhism, as well as the three qualities we need to effectively navigate the space between the death of what was and the birth of what will be. If wealth is up, why is happiness down? In this soulful episode of Everyone's Talkin' Money, Shari sits down with educator and award-winning author Jeff Golden to explore one of the biggest contradictions in modern life: we have more money than ever, yet we're more disconnected and unfulfilled. Drawing from his book Reclaiming the Sacred, Jeff shares how we've been conditioned to chase the wrong things—and how to realign with what truly matters. You'll hear: Why money only accounts for 2–4% of happiness What really drives our well-being (and it's not what you think) How our culture of consumption is numbing us, not fulfilling us What “enough” actually looks like—and how to know when you've reached it Why micro-actions are more powerful than big life overhauls How to model a healthier money narrative for your kids (and yourself) Reclaiming the Sacred, Healing Our Relationships with Ourselves and the World was named Best Environmental Book of 2023 by IndieReader, and winner of the Grand Prize at the Nautilus Book Awards (previous winners include the Dalai Lama, Brené Brown, and Barbara Kingsolver). Ethan visits a recurrent conversation he's been having with his students, his friends, and within his own mind: the dissonance between feeling like your personal life and close community are in basically good places, while simultaneously raising your gaze to see the immense suffering and chaos of the world. How can we hold those two and find our compassion and skillful means? Framing thoughts around the massive ICE raids that are tearing families apart, followed by the subsequent mass protests in Los Angeles and across the country, Ethan examines how we can remain grounded in our own beings and work with any guilt we might feel for feeling safer than others right now. How can we stay grounded in ourselves and leverage what is classically called the “Precious Human Birth” to experience a harmonized practice on three levels of showing up: the personal, the interpersonal, and the collective? In EPISODE 202 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER host Gillian Lockitch, and Jeff Golden discuss the complex relationship between happiness, health, and longevity, emphasizing that materialism does not enhance well-being. Despite economic growth, happiness levels have declined since the 1940s. Two years ago, in episode 136 I first spoke with Jeff Golden, author of Reclaiming the Sacred: Healing Our Relationships with Ourselves and the World, which won the Grand Prize at the Nautilus Book Awards. Since then, the world has continued to change in ways that affect our emotional, social, and even physical health. Today, Jeff joins me again to reflect on what has shifted in the past two years—both in the world and in his own perspective—and to share new insights on how we can cultivate happiness, connection, and purpose as we age.Golden highlights the importance of inner factors like self-worth and relationships over material possessions. He advocates for personal development, meditation, and gratitude practices to cultivate fulfillment. I share my experience with a personal development program that helps recognize and overcome negative self-judgments. Both of us stress the need for self-nourishment and the ripple effects of personal happiness on societal well-being. Episode Summary:John Philip Newell is best described as “a wandering teacher with the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar.” Formerly the Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, John Philip joined me from his home in Edinburgh to offer a new, yet ancient way forward in a time when the empire has once again wedded and bedded Christianity.Long before the colonizing forces of imperial Christianity made their way to the British Isles, an indigenous form of spirituality nourished those sacred souls living in the borderlands of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The Celts believed divinity pervaded every aspect of life. There was no distinction between secular and sacred, human and divine. The Celtic vision of the world is essentially sacramental, perceiving God's presence in ordinary things like rocks, forests, springs, groves, hills, and meadows. “The Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common,” writes Esther De Waal. For them, the natural world is the container of the sacred and a gateway to the luminous—the holy intersection between mortals and the supernatural. These tribes bewildered the Roman church because they were relational rather than rational, inspirational rather than institutional, and indigenous instead of imperial. In this modern age, when we find ourselves divorced from the natural world, addicted to technology, controlled by institutional religion, and victims of an empire of our own making, there is a great deal to learn from the ancient Celts. We need nothing less than a reclamation of our humanity, a rekindling of the Beltaine Fire burning in every human heart. Most of us are still reeling from the recent presidential election. The dark forces of authoritarianism, patriarchy, and white supremacy are chronically ingrained in the highest levels of government, blessed and absolved by white Christianity. But here's what I'm slowly starting to believe—every dark ending births a new beginning. Evil never has the last word. We've been given a dark gift, a chance to resist and re-imagine the world as it should be. We are living in liminal time, “when we can't go back but we can't see the way forward,” writes my friend Melanie Mudge. What better time to wake up, “dream new dreams,” and rekindle the sacred flame in every human soul. As John Philip reminds us:“We live in a threshold moment. We are waking up to the earth again. We are awakening to the feminine and the desire to faithfully tend the interrelationship of all things. In this moment, politically, culturally, and religiously, we are witnessing the death throes of a shadow form of masculine power that has arrayed itself over against the earth and over against the sacredness of the feminine. This shadow form of power, however, has no ultimate future, for it is essentially false in its betrayal of the earth and the feminine. So in fear it is lashing out with unprecedented force. But it is not the deep spirit of this moment in time. Something else is trying to be born.”Celtic spirituality is needed now more than ever. Allow John Philip to lead you into deeper streams of indigenous wisdom where action and contemplation, vision and profound mystery light our collective way forward. His latest book, The Great Search, is out now. Bio:John Philip Newell (b 1953) is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being.Canadian by birth, and also Scottish, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. His PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over fifteen books, including his award-winning publication, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book, also with HarperOne (and published in the UK by Wild Goose), is The Great Search (August 2024), in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.Newell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher' following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic world, ‘wandering Scots' (or scotus vagans as they were called) seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar', combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual, the head as well as the heart, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. His writings have been translated into seven languages. In 2020 he relinquished his ordination as a minister of the Church of Scotland as no longer reflecting the heart of his belief in the sacredness of Earth and every human being. He continues, however, to see himself as ‘a grateful son of the Christian household' seeking to be in relationship with the wisdom of humanity's other great spiritual traditions. In 2011 John Philip was awarded the first-ever Contemplative Voices Award from the Shalem Institute in Washington DC for his prophetic work in the field of spirituality and compassion. In 2022 he received the Sacred Universe Award from the Well Center for Spirituality in Chicago, IL in recognition of his significant work in furthering humanity's relationship with the sacredness of Earth. Please follow us on social media (use the buttons below) and help us get the word out!
