This week I welcomed back Sara Reusche (she/her)! Sara is a CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, CVT, and owns Paws Abilities Dog Training, LLC in Southeast Minnesota and the Twin Cities metro. Sara and I talked about what we mean by the term sports lite versus sport bred, what the sports lite dogs she's bred look like - and how everyone deserves an easy dog, even those who want to do sports. To learn more about Sara's training program go to https://pawsabilitiesmn.com/ (they have online offerings so you don't have to be local!) and to learn more about her breeding program check out https://www.facebook.com/puzdog. In this episode we talk a bit about where people might go to find a sports lite dog and what kinds of questions to ask a breeder. If you're looking for a puppy or adult dog, I highly recommend checking out the Puppy Seekers Project. They have a group on Facebook which is incredibly helpful in the puppy search, and when you get there, ask them about how to get recommendations for specific breeders. If you're interested in learning more about breeders who prioritize the goals of the Functional Dog Collaborative, that is the place to go!

We weigh the advantages and disadvantages of private lessons, group classes, and board and train programs, making sure you get the most personalized advice. Discover why private one-on-one training stands out as the most effective, especially for tackling those pesky nuisance behaviors at home. Would you like to go on?Will Bangura M.S. CBCC-KA (00:38.106)Good day dog lovers. I'm Will Van Gura. Thanks for joining me for another episode of dog training today. We really appreciate you. We love all your support. Today I want to talk about different dog training options. You know, whether it be you needing or wanting to train a young puppy or you training an older dog, there are different options. You know, some of the most common options are sending your dog away.for training, what a lot of people call board and train or doggy bootcamp, having private lessons or going to a group class. So I just want to talk a little bit about the pros and cons of all of those. Now, the first thing that I want to say is that I believe, especially, especially when you're starting brand new training with a dog that knows little to nothing, that getting private one -on -one trainingthe best option for every dog and for every pet parent. if you've got a dog that has problems in the home, nuisance behaviors like potty training issues, jumping, barking, digging, being destructive, again, having private lessons is great. Now, if you've got a lot of those nuisance behaviors at your home, private lessons are best done there, at your home.and not done at the trainer's facility if they have one or meeting them in a park. Now I'm not saying that that's a bad way to go. Again, private one -on -one training I think is the best thing because you the pet parent get the undivided attention of that trainer without them having to divide their attention with other pet parents, with other dogs. And that leads me into group training classes.because a lot of people want to opt for group training classes because in many cases they're more affordable than private one -on -one training and group classes Support the Show.If you need professional help please visit my Dog Behaviorist website.Go here for Free Dog Training Articles

Can aggression in dogs truly be corrected by punishment alone? We're setting the record straight on this episode of our podcast, where the focus is firmly on aggressive behavior in our furry friends. We've gathered a wealth of stories from six pet owners who bravely reached out for assistance, each battling the aggressive behaviors of their dogs and, unfortunately, falling into the trap of aversive training methods such as electronic and prong collars. We're not just here to tell stories, though. Expect to learn and understand the benefits of positive reinforcement as an alternative to managing aggressive behavior in dogs. Marching through the details of differential reinforcement, we guide you on how to condition your favorite canine to relate certain triggers with rewarding behaviors, rather than invoking fear or pain. And as we trudge along, we'll underline the absolute necessity for professional education and certifications within the dog training industry - a critical call for a more empathetic approach towards our canine companions.Towards the end, we're not shying away from the controversy surrounding dog training methods and tools. There are advocates for aversive techniques, but we're standing our ground on the efficacy of counter-conditioning and desensitization. Remember, while punishment might temporarily stifle aggressive behavior, it doesn't get to the crux of the problem. So if you're a dog owner or trainer looking to understand and tackle aggression issues in dogs, this episode's got your name all over it. Strap in for a deep, educational discussion - it's time to change canine lives for good.  Dog Training with Will Bangura, M.S., CDCB, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA, FFCP.  For Dog Behavior Help visit DogBehaviorist.com Does Your Dog Need A Dog Anxiety Calming Aid? Whether we like it or not, fear is a powerful force in our lives- fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of losing the people and things that are important to us. Even as much of the animal world shifts to a “fear free” mindset when it comes to training and interacting with animals, many of us still struggle to let go of our own fears. Too often, that fear keeps us trapped in uncomfortable and painful situations, or prevents us from doing things we love or aspire to.   Mikkel Becker, the lead animal trainer at Fear Free Pets, came on the show today to talk about overcoming the fears that hold us back and keep us from living full and joyful lives. Sometimes as dog trainers, we focus much of our attention on the dog, and meeting the needs of that dog in front of us. Though, we can sometimes lose sight of the person on the other end of the leash, and accommodating their needs as well. In this episode of Fresh Bites on The Bitey End of the Dog I have an educational conversation with Abigail Witthauer about effectively working with people with disabilities, and ensuring that success can happen at both ends of the leash. Abigail also gives excellent advice on addressing the issue of ableism in the dog training community, and I hope the conversation about the many issues with ableism, and how it can impact our friends and colleagues, continues beyond this podcast. Listen Now New Bill Addresses Pets During Divorce In Pennsylvania, former attorney and now state Rep. Anita Kulik has introduced H.B. 1432, which would establish the new areas of concern for judges to consider when deciding guardianship of a pet in divorce cases. If the bill passes, the judge would be allowed to consider: whether the animal was acquired prior to or during the marriage; the basic, daily needs of the animal; who generally gets veterinary care and social interaction for the animal; who deals with local and state regulations, such as licensing; and who has the greater ability to financially support the pet. Listen Now Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against Pet Food Company A federal judge has dismissed a multi-million-dollar lawsuit filed against Ainsworth Pet Nutrition (which is owned by Smucker's) for alleged false and deceptive advertising of its Rachael Ray Nutrish dog food. The suit claimed Ainsworth's labeling of Rachael Ray Nutrish, as natural food for dogs was false, deceptive and misleading. Independent laboratory tests found Glyphosate, a chemical weed killer such as RoundUp, was present in the products. The judge said, "The presence of negligible amounts of Glyphosate in a dog food product that do not have harmful, 'toxic,' or 'carcinogenic' effects is not likely to affect consumers' decisions in purchasing the product and is thus not material." Then for the same reasons, Judge Stanton dismissed the breach of warranty claim ruling, "A reasonable consumer would not interpret the label 'natural' as warranting that the products contain no amount of Glyphosate."
