Nominate your veterinary hero here today! Adam Christman, DVM, MBA, and Christopher Pachel, DVM, DACVB, CABC (IAABC), discuss the strategic use of food as a primary reinforcer in canine training, emphasizing its effectiveness due to its high value and ease of delivery. Pachel highlights the critical role of timing, noting that rewards should be delivered immediately to be most effective. He also explores non-food reinforcers, such as engaging activities or favorite objects, and the use of secondary reinforcers like clickers or verbal cues to bridge the gap between a behavior and its reward.

Should you get a dog for your dog… or are you about to double your stress, noise, behavior issues, and vet bills? Many pet parents see a bored, clingy, or “lonely” dog (or other pet) and assume the solution is a companion, a boyfriend, girlfriend, sibling, or built-in best friend. But adding another dog doesn't automatically make life easier. It can just as easily increase barking, trigger resource guarding, amplify anxiety, and create daily management problems you didn't have before, especially if you don't actually know why your dog is acting that way in the first place. In this episode, veterinary psychiatrist Dr. Rachel Malamed, DVM, DACVB, CABC, MBA, breaks down when getting a second dog truly helps, when it backfires, and how to tell whether your dog actually needs a companion or just better enrichment, structure, or training, or time with their favorite person - you!BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU'LL DISCOVER: • What “my dog is lonely” really means and how to assess it correctly • The most common ways a second dog makes behavior issues worse • The 3-part filter to use before bringing home another dog: capacity, compatibility, and motivationIf you are even considering dog number two, pause and listen to this first.CONNECT WITH DR. Working in the pet behavior field isn't always rainbows and unicorns. Instead, sometimes it involves the Rainbow Bridge. This topic is often misunderstood and stigmatized as the dark side of behavior. However, in science and in life, it is essential we refrain from drawing conclusions or placing blame without weighing facts and exploring varying points of view. One perspective is that the practice of euthanasia is a painless and humane way of releasing a pet from their suffering when all other means have been exhausted, and can be considered a compassionate and selfless gift.Join The Amys and their extra special guest, researcher, and applied animal behaviorist, Miranda Hitchcock, co-founder of Every Dog Austin Behavior & Training, for a heart to heart discussion about this sensitive, but necessary topic. Send us a Text Message."How will they remember me?" Join the Amys and their enchanting guest Dr. Sarah Kuhlo, Veterinary Services Manager at Ceva Animal Health, as they discuss pheromones and their role in creating the ultimate Calm Clinic experience for pets and their people. Chemical communication is the oldest, most common, and most important form of intra-species communication used by most animals. Semiochemicals, such as pheromones, send powerful chemical "signals" that affect behavior. ThunderWorks® and FELIWAY® products are species-specific synthetic formulations of calming pheromones. Their use in veterinary settings and beyond, is proven to assist with environmental familiarization and emotional stabilization, leading to decreased fear, anxiety, and stress in dogs and cats. Can humans detect the presence of dog/cat-specific pheromones? How can calming pheromones help you gain more trust from pets and their guardians? How does the Calm Clinic approach promote increased overall physical and emotional health? Are synthetic calming pheromones available for humans
Send us a Text Message.Do you know what costs A LOT more than a bottle of CBD oil? A trip to the ER. Join the Amys and their mentor, Dr. Lisa Radosta, as they clear the smokescreen and hash out the science regarding the use of cannabis products in veterinary medicine. The market is flooded with so-called quick-fix solutions to common pet behavior problems. And, when pet parents are desperately searching for answers, it can be challenging to navigate the barrage of messaging and pseudoscience available at their fingertips. Given the inconsistencies in policy and legislation, and society's differing ideologies and moral considerations regarding the use of cannabis, the lines are further blurred and the truth even more allusive. Alas, our best option is to do what we do best - follow the science! What's actually contained in the CBD products that are marketed to pet parents? Is there any scientific evidence that CBD products treat our pet's behavioral concerns when administered according to labeled instructions? Are Certificates of Analysis verifying a product's quality, safety, and regulatory compliance required for every CBD product available on the market? It's time to clear the air and set the record straight.
