Want to learn more about dogs (and cats) without learning more about dogs (and cats)? Pick up an Amy Shojai thriller. She's written several, and while they are gripping narratives, they're also entertaining ways to learn about animal psychology. Her September and Shadow novels in particular are informed by decades of experience writing non-fiction pet books and helping clients as a certified animal behavior consultant (CABC). In this wide-ranging and entertaining conversation, Shojai explains how her constant self-reinvention helps her career, how her dog overcame her resistance to adopting during the pandemic, how the rise of the internet made new stories and storytelling possible, and why dogs are people with fur … and cats are space aliens. About Amy Shojai Amy Shojai is a certified animal behavior consultant, and the award-winning author of 35+ dog (and cat) care books. The Constantly Adapting Boys of Comedy™ discuss the endless race of life. In Lewis Carroll's ‘Through the Looking Glass', The Red Queen explains to Alice that in her world “it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.” This week we look through this lens to see why completion and exploitation create seemingly endless evolutionary arms races common to most life on earth. When a predator gains an advantage over prey, the prey that will be the most successful are the ones that adapt a new advantage over those predators and vice versa. This push and pull drives conflict and cooperation between and within species, genders, groups, families, parasites, businesses, militaries, and more. When it comes to existing, it's difficult just to stay in the race and nearly impossible to get ahead for long. The idea of being stuck on this treadmill can feel futile when looked over a long span of time, but it also guarantees that there will always be opportunities at any moment in time. Change is inevitable, but how does The Red Queen Hypothesis playout in a modern world with many of the biggest changes that life on earth has ever faced? The CABC™ once again attempt to outdo themselves to compete for your eyes and ears. You the audience will ultimately decide if the MUMies species will thrive or go extinct. Pete talks us through the definition of damage control resuscitation and the application of this concept to critically injured patients in the pre-hospital setting. The discussion ranges from the practicalities of delivery to novel therapies sitting on the horizon. Top 3 tips: Remember that the classic ABC algorithm has morphed into CABC and that C stands for the control of catastrophic haemorrhage. This has to be immediate and concurrent with managing the airway, breathing and circulation. Nail your IV lines! If a red team is on the way but you are on scene, you may be the one who has the best chance to place the IV cannula which is going to facilitate further resuscitation. Place it and make sure it is really secure. You can extend the classic algorithm from "ABCDE" to "CABCDEF" where “F” stands for forward planning. So immediately you are activated and en-route, start planning ahead and consider what other services you may need. If on scene you recognise a severe derangement in physiology activate the red or HEMS team as appropriate; the earlier these teams and the receiving facility receive patient information - the better they are able to allocate their resources. Biography: Pete qualified in medicine in 1987 and has served in the UK Defence Medical Services ever since, apart from a nine-year sabbatical in New Zealand during which time he trained in helped to produce three children, trained in Emergency Medicine and explored the Southern Alps. He is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Retrieval Medicine, working between the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (a component of the Scottish Specialist Transfer And Retrieval Service - ScotSTAR) when not deployed on Regimental duties. A climber and skier since his teenage years, these sports have taken him on adventures throughout the world and continue to foster his passion for Wilderness Medicine.
