Should museums give back looted treasures like the Benin Bronzes?

An indigenous red-feather cloak was recently returned to Brazil from a museum in Denmark - where it had been on display for hundreds of years. There are other examples of historic and precious artefacts being returned to their countries of origin. And this is leading to a growing pressure to return more, like the Hoa Hakananai'a, originally taken from Rapa Nui (Easter Island). The BBC's Zeinab Dabaa in Cairo talks us through Egypt's calls for the repatriation of three items: Queen Nefertiti's bust, the Rosetta Stone and the Dendara Zodiac. Ashley Lime, a BBC journalist in Nairobi, explains the significance of the Benin Bronzes - and why some museums are reluctant to let them go.Alongside the campaigns to get valuable and historic items returned, there are also efforts to digitise treasures. Chidi Nwaubani is the founder of Looty, a radical art collective which wants to use augmented reality to create digital versions of artefacts and, in their words, “loot back” treasures. Lara will be testing how well it can help make this documentary, interviewing it, asking for the research. Can it write the script? She will be pitting her own journalistic skills against the technology everyone's talking about - ChatGPT. Lara is our guide to stepping into this new era experiencing a giant leap forward in AI, not only by ChatGPT but from its competitors who are rapidly on its heels. She hears from experts how it is a tool that could become as ubiquitous as Google, used for enhancing human performance, not limiting it. Lara wants to understand what learning to live with this technology means in practice. How can we skill up and learn to use it smartly, to enhance our lives and careers? But it does have its problems. Yes, it can summarise reams of material in seconds. But it does get things wrong. There are also questions about its ethics, its bias and identifying the sources of the material it generates. October is the spookiest month, so we’re joined by horror expert Louise Blain to discuss new TV series The Haunting Of Bly Manor and classic movie Final Destination. Is Netflix’s gothic romance – loosely adapted from the works of Henry James – a worthy successor to last year’s Hill House series? We talk ghosts, accents, and adaptations. In our regular Rewind retro section, the crew share their love for 2000’s iconic teen death-dodging film. Is it worth a rewatch this Halloween? Meanwhile, we’ve been to the year 3000 – and beyond. We give our verdict on Star Trek: Discovery’s big jump to the future in the season three opener. And the Baby Yoda Show will be back soon, along with its supporting Mandalorian. As the trailers keep coming for the Disney streaming service’s secret weapon, it seems like a good time to ask if the future of Star Wars is on the small screen. There’s all this plus Green Lantern, The Stand, Buck Rogers, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and Mad Max in Robby The Robot’s Waiting, the perfectly splendid podcast where there are no accidents, no coincidences, no escapes... Episode highlights: 1.00 – What we’re watching: Star Trek: Discovery returns, with our heroine crashing into a man and his cat, 900 years in the future. We set phasers for fun. 10.22 – The Mandalorian will be back at the end of the month! And Obi-Wan looks certain to pull a Jedi mind trick on the TV schedules soon too. We punch the Disney+ coordinates into the navicomputer and speculate on where Star Wars will take us next. 24.40 – We had Bly hopes for the follow up to The Haunting Of Hill House. We journey to a stately home in the 1980s and weigh the scary against the silly. 36.11 – Rewind: it’s been 20 years since Final Destination first cheated death. We look back on the classic teen horror. 51.32 – News: there’s a new trailer for The Watch, Buck Rogers might be making a comeback, Doctor Strange will be in Spider-Man 3, Imperator Furiosa will have her own Mad Max prequel series, we’d love to see Green Lantern in the Arrowverse, and more. Christopher writes and speaks at universities and corporate settings about emerging technologies including AI, crypto assets, blockchain, augmented and virtual reality and robotics. He is also a nonlinear, multimodal careerist who has had eight careers so far – including touring rock musician (played with Robert Palmer), jingle producer (sang on the first Kit Kat TV commercial “Gimme A Break”) and Web site project manager (developed Johnson & Johnson's first corporate Web site). Chris also spent 15 years at IBM in a variety of roles including business strategy consultant and communications executive driving social media adoption and the use of virtual worlds for training and events. Based on this atypical career path, Chris developed a program called “How to succeed at jobs that don't exist yet” to give today's learners insight into how to navigate the new world of work. He has shared this perspective at various universities including Baruch, Columbia, Duke, Queens College, Stern School of Business at NYU, Texas A&M and Union College. Chris recently recorded a live-action course for LinkedIn Learning called “Future-proofing your data science career” – which went live in April 2020. Some reports suggest the government won’t now go ahead with the reform of the Gender Recognition Act. If true, this means that people won’t be able to self-declare their gender. What will this mean for the wider debate? Jane speaks to Helen Belcher, co-founder of Trans Media Watch and chair of the national LGBT charity Consortium, and Joan Smith, Chair of the Mayor of London’s Violence Against Women and Girls Board and author of ‘Home Grown: How Domestic Violence Turns Men Into Terrorists’. Susie Dent is a lexicographer, etymologist and linguist. She has appeared in Dictionary Corner on Channel 4's 'Countdown' since 1992, and can also be seen on 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown, or ‘Catsdown’ as she calls it. She can also be heard alongside Gyles Brandreth on the award-nominated podcast Something Rhymes With Purple. She joins Jane to talk about how her love of words began with shampoo bottles, her research into modern tribes, 90s rap music lyrics and the meaning of cacoethes. For the past month Woman's Hour has been celebrating women who get things done – the Troupers. Today it’s the turn of Preethi Manuel who talks about the life of her daughter, fostering, and her role in campaigning for disabled children to have access to mainstream education. Non-essential retail shops are beginning to reopen, but will we actually want to go back? New technology is using artificial intelligence to make the experience of online shopping more fulfilling and more personalised. BBC Click reporter Lara Lewington tells Jane more.

We're being told to work from home if we can, so how's it going? What if you're sharing your home with someone else #WFH? Do you have enough space? As well as the paid work you're doing, how are the chores getting divided up? And what about looking after children in the middle of it all? Victims of violence in the home are being reassured that there's still help available for them despite what's happening. Sarah Green from End Violence Against Women describes how dangerous the lock-down is for victims of domestic abuse. We hear from Kate Elisabeth Russell, author of My Dark Vanessa. It's about an American teenager who's been groomed and raped by a teacher. At the time that it's happening the character thinks it's love, but realises when she's older that is was abuse. And how we're using tech to stay in touch. Lara Lewington from BBC Click gives us some tips on Zoom, Whatsapp and Houseparty.

The Chinese company Huawei wants to be the biggest tech firm in the world. But this week the US tried to squash it by cutting Huawei off from Google’s Android operating system, meaning that users’ phones may no longer get security updates. It’s the latest move in an ongoing trade war between the US and China. So how much is this about phones, and how much is it about a battle for global supremacy? BBC Click’s Jen Copestake, Vincent Ni from the BBC Chinese Service and our Security Correspondent Gordon Corera tell us the answer.
