In this 216th episode of The Wired Educator Podcast, I talk about the four relationships that we must strengthen in education. I love the magic of a new year and any chance to start fresh. I journal. I make resolutions. I set goals. Helping students, teachers and educational leaders become their best is my passion and mission in life. I love it. I see educators working hard to build strong connections with students not only because it is the right thing to do and fun, but because it really makes a difference in the life of that student, in that classroom and in that teacher. Building good relationships, however, is just the start! There are other relationships that are important to nature and that is what this episode is about. Building relationships with others isn't easy, but it makes all the difference. It improves our work environment, our day, and our lives. It can even change how we are when we get home! We can't wait for others to start this important work. We must start it and model it. I had to get a little courageous in this episode. This is not an interview. This is me opening up and sharing what I believe we all need to do. It's not easy nor comfortable but it will make a lasting difference in everyone. I hope you enjoy this podcast as I reach out and share from my heart at what I hope we all can find the strength to put into action. Please send me your thoughts on this episode. ~Kelly ------------------------- Sign-up for Kelly's newsletter here. Kelly Croy is an author, speaker, and educator. Vanquish the Myth of The Digital Native Learner: What Every Educator Needs to Know About Teaching and Learning with Technology! In this 208th episode of The Wired Educator Podcast I share what every educator needs to know about teaching and learning with technology. Click here to listen to this episode. In this episode Kelly presents solutions to many of the challenges and obstacles teachers and school districts face when implementing good instructional practice with technology. Our problems are never really about funding, the number of devices, the WiFi, professional learning, nor the devices themselves, but rather the correct mindset, culture and practice needed. This episode addresses the following questions: What do we do to counter and correct the myth that students know how to use technology to learn? What kind of environment do we need to create in our classrooms about learning with technology? What should the culture of our schools be with technology? What should we really be teaching students do with technology? How should we approach professional learning? What can a school learn from a hospital about the use of technology? What is permanent beta and why should I embrace it as my teaching philosophy? And more! You are going to love this episode. Be sure to leave a review and share it out. Jim Tressel is one of my all-time heroes. I admire him for his faith, his character, his success on the football field as a coach, and as an academic leader as President of Youngstown State University. In this episode we focus primarily on academics. (I snuck in a couple football questions. They're good ones.) I really want to focus on what is it what it takes to be a great educational leader, especially a college president, how can we help students better prepare for college, his advice to teachers, students and administrators as we head back to school, and of course how we can each become better leaders. Jim's character and Integrity shines through as always. I love this interview. You will too. Click here to listen to Episode 205 "Personal Leadership" an Interview with President Jim Tressel on The Wired Educator Podcast. James P. Tressel became the ninth president of Youngstown State University in 2014 and has been busy moving the campus forward on many fronts ever since. Under President Tressel's leadership, enrollment increased for the first time in five years, the academic quality of freshmen classes has continued upward, student retention is up and the university has solidly focused on student success - graduating on time, with little or no debt and with a job. In addition, the university is hitting record fund-raising levels, keeping the lid on tuition costs, expanding scholarship opportunities and increasing both university and private housing options across campus. Prior to becoming YSU president, Tressel was executive vice president for Student Success at the University of Akron, head football coach at Ohio State University (winning the national championship in 2002) and head football coach and executive director of Intercollegiate Athletics at YSU (winning four national championships). So many teachers have reported lack of engagement in remote learning. I think project-based learning is the future of school and a method of instruction that every educator should explore and apply. No matter where you are on the spectrum with project-based learning, you will appreciate and benefit from hearing from Ross and Erin. Ross Cooper is currently an administrator in the Chappaqua Central School District. Previously, he was an Elementary School Principal, K-12 curriculum supervisor, Elementary Assistant Principal, and fourth grade teacher. He is an Apple Distinguished Educator and a Google Certified Innovator. As a nationally recognized leader in project based learning, he has worked with thousands of educators across the country to implement PBL, and in 2016 he coauthored Hacking Project Based Learning: 10 Easy Steps to PBL and Inquiry in the Classroom. While his day job is his first professional priority, he finds time to conduct workshops and speak on project based learning, inquiry-based learning, student-centered learning, instructional leadership, his professional experiences, and more. When he is not working, he enjoys eating steak and pizza and provoking his four beautiful nephews and niece. He blogs at rosscoop31.com, and you can connect with him via email, RossCoops31@gmail.com, and on Twitter @RossCoops31. Erin Murphy currently has the pleasure of serving as the Supervisor of Teaching & Learning for the Humanities subjects in the East Penn School District. She spent four years as a Middle School Assistant Principal and has classroom experiences ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade. She is a proud graduate of Penn State University's Professional Development School, where she was trained in inquiry-based instructional approaches. Erin is coauthor of Hacking Project Based Learning: 10 Easy Steps to PBL and Inquiry in the Classroom (2016), and she consults internationally with leaders and learners regarding literacy, learning, and leadership. Erin, her husband, and her two daughters reside in Pennsylvania, and the family enjoys spending time gardening, watching football, and playing board games. You can connect with Erin through her blog, psumurphette.com, via email at psumurphette@gmail.com, and on Twitter @MurphysMusings5. In this episode, I interview Jennifer Gonzalez, the Editor in Chief, Founder, and Host of Cult of Pedagogy. Cult of Pedagogy is one of the most respected and followed educational resources for teachers available. Cult of Pedagogy is more than just the amazingly well written and applicable posts on her blog, it's more than her incredible podcast; Cult of pedagogy provides books, videos and other amazing resources to help teachers around the globe, but most importantly it is a community for teachers who love teaching and want to become their best. Jennifer and I have an amazing conversation about how Cult of Pedagogy came to be, how it has been helping teachers during this pandemic, and we look ahead at the future of education. Jennifer is absolutely brilliant, and we have a lot of fun. Buckle-up. Jennifer Gonzalez taught middle school language arts for seven years. Half that time was spent in the greater D.C. area, the other half in southcentral Kentucky. She earned National Board Certification in 2004. Then, after having her first child, sheleft teaching to be a stay-at-home mom. In 2008, She was hired by a local university to teach pre-service teachers. This work gave her new passion for preparing and supporting educators. When Jennifer was in the classroom, shefelt alone in her nerdiness. The teachers' lounge was never a safe place for her emotionally or intellectually, and finding others to share her real thoughts and feelings with took a lot of work. She learned to stifle the urge to gush about some new strategy She was planning to try or to open up about a struggle She was having with her students. She came to expect that her genuine questions would be met with sarcasm. With the creation of her site Cult of pedagogy, She hopes to create what shedid not have herself: a vibrant, encouraging, stimulating community of teachers, supporting each other toward excellence. She believes if we can reach across the limits of geography and find each other, there's no limit to the amazing things we can accomplish. Osiris had humble beginnings, with Stephen and his partner Brenda developing and delivering their own training, based off their own expertise at quality provision. Over the years, Osiris quickly grew to become the nation's leading independent provider of teacher training, with the world's greatest educationalists in collaboration. During this time, Stephen worked closely with such world-renowned educationalists as Professor John Hattie, Professor Guy Claxton, Professor Carol Dweck and many others on developing and releasing now world-famous programmes for teachers in the UK, including Visible LearningPlus, the Osiris Mindsets Programme, and the Osiris Teaching Intervention. In response to the disruption caused to worldwide education by COVID-19, Stephen has re-focused on creating sustainable, online, interactive networks and programmes for teacher and leader development. In this episode of The Wired Educator Podcast I Interview Samantha Wheeler. A typical Wired Educator Podcast guest is someone who's written books, speaks from the stage, or earned multiple recognitions and awards for education, my guest today is wonderful and awesome, but for none of those reasons; Samantha is a senior in college rocking it as a student-teacher in one of the most challenging times in education. I wanted a fresh perspective on teaching and learning and Sami delivered. She is brilliant. I learned so much from this interview and you will too. Samantha Wheeler, or Sami as she goes by, is a current senior in college at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ. She is pursuing a dual degree in secondary education and mathematics. So far, she has completed an educational technology certification as well as a Google Level 1 Educator certification. She is also a part of the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program which seeks to place teachers with strong STEM content knowledge into high-need school districts upon graduation. At Rider, Sami is extremely involved on campus and is a part of many different organizations such as the Student Education Association, Math Club and four different national honors societies! She has made herself known on campus through multiple leadership and mentoring roles such as working as an orientation leader, peer coaching new students, and leading seminars for first year education majors. Sami has just started her last semester of college and is currently student teaching in a local middle school in a 7th grade math class. Once she graduates, Sami plans to teach math at the secondary level where she can't wait to share her love of STEM with others! She hopes to someday earn her masters and even possibly her PhD in hopes to teach upper level mathematics at the collegiate level.
