MISSION, Texas - Mission community and preservation activists Ester Salinas and Irma Flores Lopez utilized the public comment period of this week's Mission City Council meeting to once again criticize Mission CISD for demolishing a nationally-listed building.Built in 1929, Roosevelt auditorium was placed on the Department of Interior's National Register of Historic Places in 2002. That did not stop Mission school board leaders from tearing it down. They said the building had fallen into disrepair and would cost too much to fix. But, Salinas and Flores Lopez argue that if Mission CISD had provided minimum maintenance over the years the roof would not have fallen in. The community activists are also upset with Mission City Council for not having strong enough preservation ordinances in place to stop the demolition. Salinas and Flores Lopez say the school district could have secured grants to pay for the repairs. Here is an audio recording of the remarks Salinas and Flores Lope gave at the Mission City Council meeting of June 12, 2023.To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Dr. Nneka McGee has quite a few thoughts here - as a Chief Academic Officer for a 9000+ student school district and as a researcher of AI over the last 4.5 years, Nneka is well positioned to transition her school district into a world of AI and share insights for others looking to do the same. Public Safety comprises approximately 1.4% of the U.S. population, yet a career in this line of work can expose each individual, on average, to 188 critical and traumatic incidents. These incidents leave their mark on each individual just as it does on someone who chooses not to work in public safety, but at a much higher rate. So, how do these professionals keep doing what scars and traumatizes most people? Studies show that while some find healthy ways to cope with what is experienced, many will develop poor behavioral conditions, thus prolonging the trauma caused by the event.  It is through the use of Critical and Traumatic Stress Debriefing that studies have shown to help break the stigma of mental health in public safety and create a better environment for those employed in that career to be able to continue the work they love by helping others. So join us with our special guest Captain Pete Hossalla as we discuss Critical and Traumatic Stress Debriefing.

Quit crying about distrust Phelan and team when you go out of your way to create such – and in such a petty manner. Also, Phelan's mentioned priorities include some good things; others that can go good or bad, and; some that are just outright Democrat-big-government-loving stuff. And beware those things that can go either way – experience says they almost always get pulled Left. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Local sales tax collection numbers are out.The more we learn, and there is new material, about the inaction, and slow action, of police at the Uvalde elementary school massacre, the more clear it is that the district's police chief was in control, giving orders, and that he was personally responsible for stopping a breech of the room that could have stopped the shooter and save lives. And, other news of Texas.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. Today's podcast guest Justin Powell talks about founding Huntington Billboards in the middle of the 2009 great recession and growing the company to 1,800 displays over 13 years. Some of the highlights. How did you enter the out of home business? Justin Powell, Founder and President, Huntington Outdoor I graduated from college.  I was 20 years old...  I made a big list.  I called it my new venture checklist.  Everything from restaurants...to insurance companies, on and on and on...my cousin and uncle actually came to me and said Justin there's this billboard down on 75.  That seems like a fair business.  Why don't you buy that.  It was an on-premise sign and I couldn't purchase it for off-premise advertising but that got me thinking... Talk about your first location I found my first location in this town of New Carlisle and very dear landowners who are friends to this day...It was 8' by 20' and a 2 pole structure and cost three times more than it should have and then I spent the next two months knocking on doors trying to rent it. Small Signs I tie everything back to numbers...We are going to build the minimum size sign to derive the best returns.  A log of times an 8' by 20' sign will do just as fine as a 12' by 24' if the location is close enough to the road and the visibility is good. How do you find winning locations? CISD.  We desire to build billboards on curves.  That's the C.  On intersections.  That's the I.  And then the S is speed.  Lower speed.  If we can get billboards along roads that are 25 mph or 30 mph...And then the last one is Demand...As we install locations we have a weathervane as to what the market can bear and where we have demand... Growing Pains About the time I got to about 70 billboards my occupancy rate was atrocious...It was 40% or something.  It was absolutely awful because I was doing everything.  I would have nice clothes on and talk to an advertiser and then I would change out of my nice clothes in the car and change into climbing gear and change out a vinyl and then I would chop down trees.  I would do land leasing.  I would do everything.   My little sister at that time - Jena was 17.  She looked at me and said "Hey Justin, why don't you let me take over sales.  And I'm like yeah sure.  She became a partner in the business.  And then my brother, he was 16.  He came to me and he said, Justin, I think I can build these things for you.  Let me do that...On that foundation we continued to build and build and build.  We got to about 500 billboards and my sister Jena got elected as State Representative...So we hired a General Manager at that point...things have transitioned a bit. Digital Billboards We had not done digital until the end of 2020.  We had some really good locations that needed to be converted...End of 2020 we built our first two signs.  We learned a lot from them.  And then in 2021 - last year- we put in 22. Whose automated platforms are you connected to. Vistar, Blip.  Blip to me is fascinating.  It's a very fascinating platform...Whether it's Blip or any of the other services that we use, it's like one ad or two ads for a day and they're paying you $20, or $50 or $100.  It's where our industry needs to go...It's found money.  It's money we never would have gotten.  I think about movie releases...it's reminder advertising... Whose signs We use Formetco.  Formetco has done a very good job for us.  They look nice and have been very reliable.  Formetco seems to know what they are doing...All of the nightmares I thought we would have...we haven't had. In November 2017, Coppell ISD kicked off a Strategic Design effort. The reason for this was (1) Pinnacle 2020, which was the long-range plan already in place, was near completion; and (2) new district leadership with Dr. Brad Hunt becoming Superintendent. It was just the right time to design the next chapter of the CISD Story. It started with the first phase called Discovery & Definition. This phase produced the new district Values. These Values represent not only what makes CISD unique and special, but also areas of improvement centering on the themes of engagement, great teaching, redefining success and relationships. Currently in the Strategic Design process we are in the awareness and advocacy stage. This is where the district, along with the stakeholders will generate innovative solutions to the priority strategies. Show Notes
