My library finally re-opened post-pandemic and I went in for a celebratory look around. Though it supposedly had been re-modeled, it seemed to look exactly the same. (Except now there seemed to be no way to access the card catalogue? WTF?) I took a look at the theatre section because, you know, Theatre Nerd, and was struck by how much the selection of plays resembled the selection of plays that were in the library when I was growing up. It struck me that the accepted literary canon of theatrical greatness has not really been updated since the 1950s. When I was growing up, the theatre section looked like Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. And today, the theatre section looks like mostly Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. This doesn't mean that theatre folk only read Miller and Williams but I think it does mean that the culture as a whole still only considers Miller and Williams worth keeping in the collection. There may be a scattered addition from a contemporary writer – maybe if it's a library that's really trying to expand, you'll see some August Wilson or Suzan Lori Parks or an Anna Deavere Smith. My library had an Annie Baker, even. But for the most part, in libraries and bookstores across America, the bulk of a theatre section will be Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams – maybe, on occasion, some Mamet, Albee, Simon or Durang – but most shelves will be the Miller and Williams collection. I'm curious about this. To keep reading The Canon Is Stuck visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. In celebration of this holiday, I re-released one of my favorite episodes of last year: my conversation with Jake Fallon & Nick Craven. Their film, CRYING ON COMMAND, is hitting the festival circuit over the next few months. I had a blast re-listening to this episode. Enjoy. In this episode, we talk about...how the duo got involved in filmmaking;whether you can start out just making films or if you can start high-minded;the reasons behind the success of their Seed & Spark campaign(s) for CRYING ON COMMAND;the watershed (see what I did there) short v. feature debate;Brett Kavanaugh (you have to listen);the run time of Martin Scorsese' latest film (again...makes sense after you hear);the importance of improv in indie film;and the depths of their new film, which packs a lot into nine minutes. As you can see (or hear) from their indie film highlights, these two are ingrained into the independent film community and spend a good part of the episode supporting other peoples' projects. These are the kind of people I want to find for the show.Jake's Indie Film Highlight: Cameron Gallagher, director; Armon Mahdavi, director, MOSS BEACH; Liza Renzulli ; Alexander Spenser Gould; Greg Case; Lee SchatzmanNick's Indie Film Highlight: Dillon Schohr; Taylor Silk; Ricardo Burgos; Christian Petzold's AFIRE; Annie Baker; Eliza Hittman; Trey Edward Shults, dir. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Steven Bach Steven Bach (1938-2009) author of the biography “Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Riefenstahl”, interviewed in 2007 by Richard Wolinsky. This podcast was first posted May 5, 2017. Leni Riefenstahl was the film maker behind the Nazi propaganda films Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Reifenstahl, who died in 2003 at the age of a hundred and one, to the end of her life denied her work was political, that she was an artist. Stephen Bach, who died at the age of 70 in 2009, had been a studio executive and began writing  books with “Final Cut”, his memoir about the making of the film Heaven's Gate. He followed that with a biography of the playwright Moss Hart, and then a biography of actress Marlene Dietrich, which as he says, led him to Leni Riefenstahl. The interview was recorded in the KPFA studios on May 7, 2007. Guardian Obituary. In an interview perhaps more timely today than the year it was recorded, Bach compares Reifenstahl's work to right-wing propaganda in America, and the use of the Hitler playbook. Complete Interview.   Charles Yu Charles Yu, whose novel Interior Chinatown just won the 2020 National Book Award for fiction, is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky. Interior Chinatown takes place in a meta-world in which Hollywood's Chinese stereotypes are portrayed by Asian immigrants and second-generation Asian Americans in films and TV shows. The book uses tropes from screenplays as well as prose fiction to illuminate these tropes, switching between narrative, entertainment history, and polemic in a highly original way. Charles Yu is the author of two previous short-story collections and one novel, has worked as an attorney, and also has worked in the writers' room of several television shows, most notably during the first season of HBO's Westworld. Interior Chinatown is now a television miniseries streaming on Hulu and Disney+. Pulitzer-winning playwright Annie Baker's filmmaking debut JANET PLANET is sort of a dual coming-of-age story, centering a young girl's fascination with her single mother who is still figuring out her own place in the world. But it also resists broad statements and neat conclusions, giving us space to unpack our own interpretations of the emotional depths that lie beneath the film's quiet exterior. Then we bring Lukas Moodysson's TOGETHER back into the discussion to compare its non-judgmental eye toward low-impact parenting, especially in the face of adult drama, and greater interest in the human drive for connection to those of JANET PLANET. And in Your Next Picture Show we share our runner-up contender for this week's pairing.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about TOGETHER, JANET PLANET,  or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. This week we're excited to present a conversation between My Dinner with André lead actor Wallace Shawn and Janet Planet filmmaker Annie Baker. When Dan Talbot, the pioneering distributor and exhibitor of international art films, read playwrights Wallace Shawn and André Gregory's script for My Dinner with André, he was so excited about the project that he helped director Louis Malle procure production funding from Gaumont. The concept was to depict an encounter between the two writers, playing fictionalized versions of themselves, as they discuss mortality, money, despair, and love over a meal at an Upper West Side restaurant—according to Gregory, Malle's one direction was to “talk faster.” By turns entertaining, confessional, funny, and moving, suffused with melancholy and joy alike, the film became a sensation at the art house upon its release, playing to packed theaters for a solid year, and went on to endure as a perennial favorite on the home video circuit. Now please enjoy the conversation between Annie Baker and Wallace Shawn.

On this week's show, Isaac Butler (co-host of Slate's Working podcast and the author of The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act) sits in for Julia Turner. The panel first turns their attention to Ren Faire, HBO's three-part documentary chronicling the surreal power struggle at the heart of America's largest renaissance festival. Director Lance Oppenheim (Spermworld, Some Kind of Heaven) presents an extraordinary window into the fantastical world, capturing a very specific moment in late-stage capitalism in which society returns to feudalism. Then, the three inspect Janet Planet, Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright Annie Baker's film debut. Like Baker's theater work, Janet Planet–a loosely autobiographical tale revolving around an 11-year-old girl named Lacy (played by Zoe Ziegler) and her mother, Janet (played by Julianne Nicholson)–pushes naturalism to the extreme, an approach that some critics love and others, some even on this very panel, abhor. Finally, the great Canadian actor Donald Sutherland died this past week at the age of 88. His career spanned over six decades, but his immense talents weren't always immediately obvious. To honor Sutherland and his body of work, each host re-watched a favorite film of theirs: Don't Look Now, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Six Degrees of Separation.  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel reflects on their relationship to giving and receiving criticism, inspired by Arthur C.
